COMPLETING RIVERSIDE: PREPARING MAINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY FOR ITS THIRD CENTURY THROUGH INNOVATIVE COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT & INFRASTRUCTURE [MAINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY (MHS) SEEKS A $500,000 NEH INFRASTRUCTURE AND CAPACITY BUILDING CHALLENGE GRANT AS PART OF AN INITIATIVE TO COMPLETE OUR NEW OFFSITE RIVERSIDE COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT CENTER. SPECIFICALLY, NEH FUNDS WILL ENABLE MHS TO INSTALL COMPACT STORAGE AND CONSOLIDATE COLLECTIONS STORAGE FROM ACROSS FOUR BUILDINGS AT THE NEW FACILITY. THIS REQUEST IS PART OF A $2 MILLION PROJECT THAT ALSO INCLUDES PAYING OFF THE LOAN ON THE FACILITY. THE PROJECT WILL ENSURE THE EFFICIENT LONG-TERM PRESERVATION, MANAGEMENT OF, AND USE OF OUR COLLECTIONS. IT WILL ALSO FREE SPACE AND SUPPORT PLANS BEING DEVELOPED TO CREATE A GALLERY FOR A CORE EXHIBITION ON OUR DOWNTOWN PORTLAND CAMPUS. THIS PROJECT IS THE CRITICAL NEXT STEP IN MHS?S ONGOING STRATEGIC EFFORT TO DEVELOP ITS FACILITIES, CAMPUS, PUBLIC PROGRAM, AND CAPACITY AS WE APPROACH MHS?S BICENTENNIAL IN 2022 AND PREPARE FOR MHS?S THIRD CENTURY OF SERVICE TO MAINE.]

THE MAINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY WILL IMPROVE THE CARE AND MANAGEMENT OF ITS COLLECTION OF MAINE-RELATED CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES DATING FROM THE LATE 1700S THROUGH THE 20TH CENTURY. THE MUSEUM WILL HIRE A PROFESSIONAL COSTUME CURATOR AND CURATORIAL ASSISTANT TO FACILITATE THE PROJECT, AND THEY WILL BE ASSISTED BY THREE PAID INTERNS. PROJECT STAFF WILL REHOUSE AND IMPROVE CATALOGING OF 1,200 PIECES CONSIDERED MOST AT-RISK, AND MOVE THEM TO A NEW OFFSITE STORAGE FACILITY PROVIDING OPTIMUM ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS. THE MUSEUM WILL PHOTOGRAPH THE PROCESSED PIECES AND ADD THE DIGITAL FILES TO THE CATALOGING RECORDS. AN ONLINE GUIDE TO THE COLLECTION WILL PROVIDE GREATER CONTEXT FOR THE MATERIALS AND CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE PUBLIC TO BROWSE BY THEMES OR REVIEW THE ENTIRE COLLECTION THROUGH THE MAINE MEMORY NETWORK.
