THE PROJECT WILL SUPPORT THE FIXED-ROUTE ISLAND EXPLORER BUS SERVICE IN SEVEN RURAL GATEWAY COMMUNITIES AND ACADIA NATIONAL PARK, WHICH ATTRACTS 4 MILLION VISITS ANNUALLY. THE BUS SERVICE WILL PROVIDE 37,500 HOURS OF ACCESSIBLE PUBLIC TRANSIT SERVICE DURING THE PEAK SEASON (MAY OCTOBER) FOR OVER 500,000 RIDERS, INCLUDING RESIDENTS, COMMUTERS, AND VISITORS. THIS ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM WILL IMPROVE ACCESS TO OUTDOOR RECREATION, CREATE JOBS, BOLSTER THE LOCAL ECONOMY, REDUCE TRAFFIC CONGESTION, ENHANCE PUBLIC SAFETY, PROTECT AIR QUALITY, AND SUPPORT A POSITIVE VISITOR EXPERIENCE AT ACADIA NATIONAL PARK.
