COMMUNITY PROJECT FUNDING/CONGRESSIONALLY DIRECTED SPENDING - CONSTRUCTION - COLBY-SAWYER COLLEGE (CSC) IS A PRIVATE, RESIDENTIAL, CO-EDUCATIONAL COLLEGE LOCATED IN THE DARTMOUTH/LAKE SUNAPEE REGION OF NEW HAMPSHIRE. CSC WAS FOUNDED AS AN ACADEMY IN 1837 AND HAS BEEN ENGAGED IN HIGHER EDUCATION SINCE 1928. TOTAL ENROLLMENT FOR THE 2021-2022 YEAR IS 848. AMONG THESE STUDENTS, 43% ARE THE FIRST GENERATION IN THEIR FAMILIES TO ATTEND COLLEGE, AND 97% ARE RECEIVING SOME LEVEL OF FINANCIAL AID. IN 2022, U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT RANKED COLBY-SAWYER AS ONE OF THE TOP COLLEGES IN THE REGION, TYING FOR FIRST PLACE IN BEST UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING-NORTH AND IN THE TOP 10 FOR BEST REGIONAL COLLEGE-NORTH, BEST VALUE SCHOOL-NORTH AND SOCIAL MOBILITY (ENROLLING AND GRADUATING DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS). THERE IS A CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF HEALTHCARE WORKERS AT ALL LEVELS OF PRACTICE ACROSS THE COUNTRY, AND THIS SHORTAGE IS PARTICULARLY ACUTE IN RURAL AREAS. NEW HAMPSHIRE RANKS 35TH OUT OF 50 STATES IN NUMBER OF HEALTHCARE PRACTITIONERS PER 1,000. ACCORDING TO A RECENT SURVEY OF HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATIONS IN THE STATE, THERE ARE MORE THAN 2,000 HEALTHCARE VACANCIES ACROSS NEW HAMPSHIRE. A PROJECTED 30% OF CURRENT WORKERS IN THE FIELD ARE EXPECTED TO RETIRE IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS. CSC’S UNDERGRADUATE NURSING PROGRAM HAS BEEN ONE OF THE STATE’S LEADING PROGRAMS FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS. IN 2019 IT WAS RANKED #1 IN NEW HAMPSHIRE BY REGISTEREDNURSING.ORG. OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS, CSC NURSING GRADUATES HAVE ACHIEVED AN AVERAGE 99% FIRST-TIME PASS RATE ON THE NATIONAL COUNCIL LICENSURE EXAMINATION (NCLEX), WHICH COMPARES TO 85% NATIONALLY. WITH A NEW HOME FOR THE SCHOOL OF NURSING & HEALTH SCIENCES, CSC WILL BUILD A NEW, STATE-OF-THE-ART CENTER FOR TEACHING AND CLINICAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT THAT WILL PROVIDE CAPACITY TO MORE THAN TRIPLE ENROLLMENT IN THE B.S. IN NURSING PROGRAM BY 2029, AND PREPARE CLOSE TO 400 GRADUATES IN OTHER HEALTH SCIENCES DEGREE PROGRAMS AT THE BACHELOR’S, ASSOCIATE, MASTER’S, AND DOCTORAL LEVEL. BY EXPANDING EXISTING AND LAUNCHING NEW PROGRAMS, CSC WILL ACCELERATE PREPARATION OF URGENTLY-NEEDED NEW HEALTHCARE WORKERS AND PROVIDE LADDERS FOR ADVANCEMENT FOR CURRENT HEALTHCARE WORKERS.
