COMMUNITY PROJECT FUNDING/CONGRESSIONALLY DIRECTED SPENDING - CONSTRUCTION - WE PROPOSE THAT GREAT BAY SERVICES RECEIVE FUNDING TO OBTAIN A SMALL FLEET OF HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE MINIVANS FOR USE BY OUR SKILLED DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS (DSPS) TO PROVIDE FRONT LINE SUPPORTS TO ADULTS WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES. THE USE OF THE COMPANY VEHICLES IN LIEU OF THE DSPS’ PERSONAL VEHICLES FOR COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION WILL PROVIDE SAFER, MORE RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION TO THE CLIENTS ENGAGED IN COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES, VOLUNTEERISM, INDEPENDENT LIVING SUPPORTS, AND THE MYRIAD OF OTHER SERVICES PROVIDED BY OUR DEDICATED DSPS. THIS PROJECT WILL DIRECTLY IMPROVE THE ABILITY OF ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES TO LIVE INDEPENDENTLY AND PARTICIPATE FULLY IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. THE REQUEST FOR MULTIPLE MINIVANS IS VERY INTENTIONAL. NH DOT FUNDED 3 MINIBUSES FOR OUR DOVER, NH OFFICE. THESE BUSES REQUIRE SPECIALIZED DOT PHYSICALS, DRIVERS’ LICENSES, AND TRAINING. FURTHERMORE, THESE BUSES ACCOMMODATE 10 TO 15 PASSENGERS. HOW MUCH INDEPENDENCE IS AN ADULT WITH DISABILITY REALLY GIVEN IF THEY HAVE TO AGREE WITH SEVERAL OTHER PEERS ON WHAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO DO/WHERE THEY WILL ALL GO FOR THE DAY. BY HAVING MORE, SMALLER VEHICLES, CLIENTS WILL BE IN SMALLER GROUPS OF 2 OR 3 THUS ESTABLISHING MORE INDEPENDENCE.
