SINCE 2006, WHITE-NOSE SYNDROME HAS CAUSED LARGE DECLINES IN POPULATIONS OF HIBERNATING BATS IN NORTH AMERICA. THE LITTLE BROWN BAT (MYOTIS LUCIFUGUS) POPULATION IN THE NORTHEAST HAS DECLINED BY >90% BUT SEEMS TO HAVE STABILIZED IN RECENT YEARS. BATS THAT SURVIVE WHITE-NOSE SYNDROME INFECTION DURING WINTER HIBERNATION CONTINUE TO BE IMPACTED BY THIS DISEASE INTO THE SPRING AND SUMMER MONTHS. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE FACTORS THAT AFFECT LITTLE BROWN BAT RECOVERY FROM WHITE-NOSE SYNDROME AND EXPLORE DIFFERENT RATES OF RECOVERY AMONG COLONIES. SPECIFICALLY, GUANO (BAT POOP) WILL BE COLLECTED FROM THREE LITTLE BROWN BAT MATERNITY COLONIES IN MASSACHUSETTS, TWO IN NEW HAMPSHIRE, AT LEAST FOUR IN MANITOBA/ONTARIO, AND AT LEAST FOUR IN WASHINGTON DURING THE SPRING AND SUMMER. GUANO SAMPLES WILL BE USED TO ASSESS STRESS, IMMUNE GENE EXPRESSION, AND VIRUS TYPE AND LEVELS AT THE MATERNITY COLONIES IDENTIFIED FOR THE STUDY. THIS INFORMATION WILL THEN BE USED TO BUILD A MODEL TO ESTIMATE THE FUTURE GROWTH RATES OF THE COLONIES. EXPECTED OUTCOMES INCLUDE PREDICTIONS OF HOW BATS ARE RESPONDING TO WHITE-NOSE SYNDROME AND THE LIKELIHOOD THAT A BAT WILL BE PART OF A SLOWLY RECOVERING OR SUCCESSFULLY RECOVERING COLONY. THIS WILL HELP INFORM WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT DECISIONS ABOUT WHICH COLONIES MAY NEED MORE PROTECTION OR WHICH COLONIES WOULD BENEFIT FROM DIRECT INTERVENTION, SUCH AS A TREATMENT. DIRECT BENEFICIARIES OF THIS WORK INCLUDE STATE AND OTHER WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS.
