IT PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR RESEARCHERS INTERESTED IN DECISION SUPPORT TO INTERACT WITH POLICY MAKERS AND LEARN ABOUT POLICY MAKING. EACH YEAR THE COLLOQUIUM BRINGS 20 TO 40 PARTICIPANTS TO WASHINGTON DC FOR TWO WEEKS OF INTENSIVE INTERACTIONS WITH SCIENTIST-LEADERS FROM THE LEGISLATIVE AND EXECUTIVE BRANCHES, EXECUTIVES FROM NGOS, POLICY ANALYSTS, SCIENCE JOURNALISTS, AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS WORKING IN THE POLICY ARENA. IN ADDITION TO IN-PERSON DIALOG AND INTERACTION COLLOQUIUM PARTICIPANTS ARE GIVEN PRE-ASSIGNED READING AND WORK THROUGH GROUP EXERCISES AND CASE STUDIES TO LEARN ABOUT THE POLICY MAKING PROCESS. FUNDS PROVIDED THROUGH THIS AWARD SUPPORT THE PARTICIPATION OF 15 GRADUATE STUDENTS AND EARLY-CAREER SCIENTISTS IN THE COLLOQUIUM. NSF-FUNDED PARTICIPANTS ARE SELECTED THROUGH A COMPETITIVE PROCESS, BASED ON THE APPLICANT'S POTENTIAL AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS. THE PRIMARY BROADER IMPACT OF THE AWARD IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A COHORT OF RESEARCHERS IN DISCIPLINES RELATED TO WEATHER AND CLIMATE WHO CAN PROVIDE DECISION SUPPORT FOR POLICY DECISIONS IN THESE AREAS. A WIDE RANGE OF HEALTH ISSUES ARE WEATHER RELATED SUCH AS RESPIRATORY ISSUES DUE TO POOR AIR QUALITY, HEAT STRESS, IMPACTS ON WATER QUALITY FROM FLOODING, AND OTHERS. THERE ARE MANY REASONS FOR THE WEATHER COMMUNITY TO WORK CLOSELY WITH THE MEDICAL/HEALTH COMMUNTITY TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE AND HEALTHY. WHILE THERE ARE EXAMPLES OF EFFECTIVE COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN THE WEATHER AND HEALTH COMMUNITIES, MUCH MORE COULD BE DONE TO PROVIDE THE MEDICAL RESEARCHERS AND PRACTITIONERS WITH INFORMATION TO REDUCE HEALTH IMPACTS FROM WEATHER. THIS SET OF MEETINGS BRINGS TOGETHER KEY PROFESSIONALS FROM ACADEMIA, THE PROFIT AND NON-PROFIT SECTOR, AND OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES TO FOSTER EFFECTIVE COLLABORATIONS TO ACCELERATE THE UNDERSTANDING LINKS BETWEEN WEATHER AND HEALTH. THOSE COLLABORATIONS, AND THE RESEARCH THAT WILL RESULT FROM THEM, WILL ULTIMATELY LEAD TO NEW PRODUCTS AND SERVICES THAT IMPROVE THE SAFETY AND HEALTH OF THE PUBLIC. BROADER IMPACTS OF THE WORK WILL PROVIDE EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF EARLY CAREER PROFESSIONALS SEEKING CAREERS AT THE INTERSECTION OF WEATHER AND HEALTH TO BUILD A STRONG AND WELL INTEGRATED COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE IN THIS AREA OF SOCIETAL NEED. THIS SERIES OF CONVENINGS INVOLVES VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON MEETINGS. THE IN-PERSON DISCUSSIONS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EXISTING AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY MEETINGS THAT BRING TOGETHER MANY OF KEY STAKEHOLDERS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL TO CONTRIBUTE TO PROJECT GOALS. A STEERING COMMITTEE OF LEADERS WORKING AT THE INTERSECTION OF WEATHER AND HEALTH GUIDE THE FORMATION OF ACTIVE WORKING GROUPS THAT EXPLORE ISSUES SUCH AS DATA AND METADATA STANDARDS TO ALLOW THE INTEROPERABILITY OF HEALTH AND WEATHER DATASETS; CONSISTENT HEALTH REPORTING INFORMATION; AND NEW APPROACHES TO EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF PROFESSIONALS WORKING AT THE INTERSECTION OF WEATHER AND HEALTH. THE STEERING COMMITTEE AND WORKING GROUPS SET THE AGENDAS FOR THE THREE IN-PERSON MEETINGS. THESE WILL INVOLVE SCIENTISTS AND PROFESSIONALS FROM GOVERNMENT, ACADEMIA, AND THE PRIVATE, AND NGO SECTORS IN WEATHER INFORMATION AND SERVICES. THEY WILL ALSO INCLUDE HEALTH AND MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS WHOSE JOB IS TO KEEP COMMUNITIES SAFE AND HEALTHY. THE IN-PERSON MEETINGS INCLUDE ONE AT THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY (AMS) ANNUAL MEETING IN JANUARY 2026. THIS NATIONAL MEETING HAS OVER 5000 ATTENDEES, MANY OF WHOM WORK AT THE INTERSECTION OF WEATHER AND HEALTH. ANOTHER IS THE AMS WASHINGTON FORUM IN APRIL, 2026. THIS CONVENING BRINGS TOGETHER THOUGHT LEADERS FROM GOVERNMENT AND THE ACADEMIC, PRIVATE, AND NGO SECTORS. THE LAST FORMAL IN-PERSON MEETING WILL HAPPEN JUST BEFORE OR AFTER THE AMS SUMMER COMMUNITY MEETING IN AUGUST, 2026 WHERE COLLABORATION ACROSS THE WEATHER ENTERPRISE IS FACILITATED AND EMPHASIZED. VIRTUAL WORKING GROUPS WILL ALSO CONVENE IN THE INTERIM BETWEEN IN-PERSON MEETINGS TO ENABLE CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN ALL INTERESTED PARTIES ON A VARIETY OF WEATHER AND HEALTH RELATED ISSUES. AMS HOSTS AN ANNUAL MEETING WITH THOUSANDS OF ATTENDEES, AND SMALLER SPECIALTY MEETINGS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. FACULTY AT ERIS, MSIS, AND COMMUNITY COLLEGES WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY TO RECEIVE FUNDING FOR TRAVEL AND CONFERENCE REGISTRATION COSTS. PROJECT ATMOSPHERE WILL BRING TOGETHER K-12 EDUCATORS TO LEARN HOW TO MONITOR NATURAL DISASTERS SUCH AS SEVERE WEATHER HURRICANES AND WINTER WEATHER. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO DEMONSTRATE TO TEACHERS HOW THEY CAN USE THESE DATA AND RESOURCES WITH STUDENTS AND IN PEERTRAINING ACTIVITIES. THE WORKSHOP IS A KEY COMPONENT OF THE PROJECT ATMOSPHERE COURSE WHEREBY PARTICIPANTS GAIN GRADUATE CREDIT FOR COMPLETION OF ALL REQUIREMENTS INCLUDING THE CONDUCT OF POST-WORKSHOP PEER-TRAINING SESSIONS. NOAA PROVIDES FOUNDATIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE PROJECT ATMOSPHERE COURSE AND NASA SUPPORT WILL SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AND ENABLE NASA MISSION DATA AND RESOURCES TO TAKE A MORE PROMINENT POSITION IN THE CURRICULA. MANY OF THE ABOVE PHENOMENA, WHETHER RELATED TO CLIMATE CHANGE OR THE IMPACT OF PEOPLE ON THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT, ESPECIALLY THOSE RELATED TO ATMOSPHERIC TRANSPORT AND OTHER AIR-BORNE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROCESSES, HAVE IMPOSED SIGNIFICANT AND SERIOUS IMPACTS ON HUMAN HEALTH. THESE IMPACTS ARE BEING FELT NOT ONLY IN THE US, BUT WORLDWIDE. TO INFORM THE PUBLIC OF THESE RISKS AND EXPLORE THE FEASIBILITY OF POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS, THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY (AMS), A PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY OF 13,000 ATMOSPHERIC SCIENTISTS; COMPANIES; AND ENTHUSIASTS, WILL CARRY OUT AN INFORMATION GATHERING ACTIVITY TO COLLECT INPUT FROM ITS CONSTITUENTS ON ISSUES IN CLIMATE AND ATMOSPHERIC PROCESSES THAT HAVE IMPACTS ON HUMAN HEALTH AND THAT ARE PRIMED TO BE QUICKLY ADDRESSED/RESOLVED. A REPORT, SUMMARIZING THE OUTCOME OF THIS SURVEY, WILL BE GENERATED AND MADE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC VIA PUBLICATION ON THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY WEBSITE AND PRESENTED TO THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION DIRECTORATE OF GEOSCIENCES. KEY OUTCOMES WILL BE THE IDENTIFICATION OF ATMOSPHERIC CHANGES AND PROCESSES WITH THE HIGHEST HUMAN-HEALTH IMPACTS RESULTING FROM POLLUTION AND CLIMATE CHANGE THAT ARE PRIMED FOR IMMEDIATE RESOLUTION AND/OR INTERVENTION. BROADER IMPACTS OF THE ACTIVITY WILL A FOCUS ON IMPROVING OUR UNDERSTANDING AND MITIGATION OF ATMOSPHERICALLY RELATED ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES ON HUMAN HEALTH. THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY (AMS) WILL CONDUCT A BROAD, INCLUSIVE, RESULTS-DRIVEN SURVEY OF ITS CONSTITUENTS WHICH CONSIST OF SCIENTISTS AND STUDENTS AS WELL AS INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS IN THE ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES AND WEATHER/CLIMATE PREDICTION. THIS INFORMATION COLLECTION EXERCISE WILL GATHER IDEAS AND TARGET AREAS WHERE GEOSCIENTISTS, COMMUNITIES, TOXICOLOGISTS, AND MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS CAN COME TOGETHER TO ACCELERATE OUR NATION'S ABILITY TO MITIGATE AND MINIMIZE HUMAN HEALTH IMPACTS OF CHANGES IN OUR ENVIRONMENT DUE TO CLIMATE AND ANTHROPOGENIC ACTIVITIES. RESULTS OF THE SURVEY WILL BE SUMMARIZED TO PROVIDE A ROADMAP FOR THE CREATION OF POTENTIAL WORKABLE SOLUTIONS TO HELP AMELIORATE THE IMPACTS OF THE ENVIRONMENT ON HUMAN HEALTH AND SOCIETY. IN THE FINAL REPORT TARGETS WILL BE IDENTIFIED THAT CAN BE ADDRESSED IN A SIGNIFICANT WAY WITHIN A 2 TO 3-YEAR TIMEFRAME. HOWEVER, THERE ARE VERY FEW ATMOSPHERIC SCIENTISTS BECOMING ENTREPRENEURS AND CREATING NOVEL NEW PRODUCTS AND SERVICES THAT BOTH BENEFIT SOCIETY AND HELP DRIVE THE ECONOMY FORWARD. TO IDENTIFY THE REASON FOR THIS PAUCITY OF PARTICIPATION IN INNOVATION ECOSYSTEMS, THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY (AMS) WILL HOLD A SERIES OF VIRTUAL EVENTS TO SURVEY ITS BROAD MEMBERSHIP. THE CONVERSATIONS WILL ILLUMINATE THE FACTORS THAT PREVENT THEM FROM INITIATING COMMERCIAL VENTURES AND BECOMING ENTREPRENEURS. BROADER IMPACTS OF THE WORK INCLUDE UNCOVERING THE INCENTIVES, TRAINING, OPPORTUNITIES, AND EDUCATIONAL VEHICLES MOST LIKELY TO CREATE A CADRE OF ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE AND METEOROLOGICAL ENTREPRENEURS AND STARTUP FOUNDERS, INCLUDING ROBUST REPRESENTATION FROM EARLY CAREER SCIENTISTS AND MEMBER OF UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS. THE AMS WILL MADE PUBLIC THE REPORT OF THEIR FINDINGS BY POSTING IT ON THE AMS WEBSITE. TO SOLICIT IDEAS ON DEVELOPING ENTREPRENEURIAL TALENT AND SPEED THE PACE OF INNOVATION IN THE ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES, THE 12,000+ MEMBER STRONG AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY, THE LARGEST PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY OF WEATHER AND CLIMATE SCIENTISTS IN THE US, WILL RUN A SERIES OF BROAD, INCLUSIVE, AND RESULTS-DRIVEN VIRTUAL ACTIVITIES. THE COLLOQUIUM ADDRESSES THE NEED FOR INTERACTION BETWEEN POLICY MAKERS AND RESEARCHERS WHO HAVE DOMAIN EXPERTISE IN AREAS RELEVANT TO POLICY DECISIONS. IT PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR RESEARCHERS INTERESTED IN DECISION SUPPORT TO INTERACT WITH POLICY MAKERS AND LEARN ABOUT POLICY MAKING. EACH YEAR THE COLLOQUIUM BRINGS 20 TO 40 PARTICIPANTS TO WASHINGTON DC FOR TWO WEEKS OF INTENSIVE INTERACTIONS WITH SCIENTIST-LEADERS FROM THE LEGISLATIVE AND EXECUTIVE BRANCHES, EXECUTIVES FROM NGOS, POLICY ANALYSTS, SCIENCE JOURNALISTS, AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS WORKING IN THE POLICY ARENA. IN ADDITION TO IN-PERSON DIALOG AND INTERACTION COLLOQUIUM PARTICIPANTS ARE GIVEN PRE-ASSIGNED READING AND WORK THROUGH GROUP EXERCISES AND CASE STUDIES TO LEARN ABOUT THE POLICY MAKING PROCESS. FUNDS PROVIDED THROUGH THIS AWARD SUPPORT THE PARTICIPATION OF 15 GRADUATE STUDENTS AND EARLY-CAREER SCIENTISTS IN THE COLLOQUIUM. NSF-FUNDED PARTICIPANTS ARE SELECTED THROUGH A COMPETITIVE PROCESS, BASED ON THE APPLICANT'S POTENTIAL AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS. THE PRIMARY BROADER IMPACT OF THE AWARD IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A COHORT OF RESEARCHERS IN DISCIPLINES RELATED TO WEATHER AND CLIMATE WHO CAN PROVIDE DECISION SUPPORT FOR POLICY DECISIONS IN THESE AREAS. SUCH DECISION SUPPORT IS INCREASINGLY VALUABLE AS STAKEHOLDERS AND DECISION MAKERS AT ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT FACE A GROWING VARIETY OF CHALLENGES RELATED TO THE MANAGEMENT OF WEATHER AND CLIMATE RISK. MANY RESEARCHERS ARE INTERESTED IN PROVIDING DECISION SUPPORT, BUT THE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE OF SCIENTISTS DOES NOT ADEQUATELY PREPARE THEM TO PERFORM THIS ROLE. C2H2 CONFERENCE: IN SERVICE OF HEALTHY AND THRIVING COMMUNITIES: PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP, COLLABORATION, AND WORKFORCE OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH THE WEATHER ENTERPRISE -THIS SERIES OF CONFERENCES AND CONVENINGS IS FOCUSED ON ADVANCING KNOWLEDGE THAT HAS DIRECT APPLICATION TO PRESSING SOCIETAL PROBLEMS FOR KEEPING COMMUNITIES SAFE AND HEALTHY IN THE FACE OF A GROWING NUMBER OF WEATHER-RELATED RISKS. A WIDE RANGE OF HEALTH ISSUES ARE WEATHER RELATED SUCH AS RESPIRATORY ISSUES DUE TO POOR AIR QUALITY, HEAT STRESS, IMPACTS ON WATER QUALITY FROM FLOODING, AND OTHERS. THERE ARE MANY REASONS FOR THE WEATHER COMMUNITY TO WORK CLOSELY WITH THE MEDICAL/HEALTH COMMUNTITY TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE AND HEALTHY. WHILE THERE ARE EXAMPLES OF EFFECTIVE COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN THE WEATHER AND HEALTH COMMUNITIES, MUCH MORE COULD BE DONE TO PROVIDE THE MEDICAL RESEARCHERS AND PRACTITIONERS WITH INFORMATION TO REDUCE HEALTH IMPACTS FROM WEATHER. THIS SET OF MEETINGS BRINGS TOGETHER KEY PROFESSIONALS FROM ACADEMIA, THE PROFIT AND NON-PROFIT SECTOR, AND OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES TO FOSTER EFFECTIVE COLLABORATIONS TO ACCELERATE THE UNDERSTANDING LINKS BETWEEN WEATHER AND HEALTH. THOSE COLLABORATIONS, AND THE RESEARCH THAT WILL RESULT FROM THEM, WILL ULTIMATELY LEAD TO NEW PRODUCTS AND SERVICES THAT IMPROVE THE SAFETY AND HEALTH OF THE PUBLIC. BROADER IMPACTS OF THE WORK WILL PROVIDE EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF EARLY CAREER PROFESSIONALS SEEKING CAREERS AT THE INTERSECTION OF WEATHER AND HEALTH TO BUILD A STRONG AND WELL INTEGRATED COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE IN THIS AREA OF SOCIETAL NEED. THIS SERIES OF CONVENINGS INVOLVES VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON MEETINGS. THE IN-PERSON DISCUSSIONS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EXISTING AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY MEETINGS THAT BRING TOGETHER MANY OF KEY STAKEHOLDERS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL TO CONTRIBUTE TO PROJECT GOALS. A STEERING COMMITTEE OF LEADERS WORKING AT THE INTERSECTION OF WEATHER AND HEALTH GUIDE THE FORMATION OF ACTIVE WORKING GROUPS THAT EXPLORE ISSUES SUCH AS DATA AND METADATA STANDARDS TO ALLOW THE INTEROPERABILITY OF HEALTH AND WEATHER DATASETS; CONSISTENT HEALTH REPORTING INFORMATION; AND NEW APPROACHES TO EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF PROFESSIONALS WORKING AT THE INTERSECTION OF WEATHER AND HEALTH. THE STEERING COMMITTEE AND WORKING GROUPS SET THE AGENDAS FOR THE THREE IN-PERSON MEETINGS. THESE WILL INVOLVE SCIENTISTS AND PROFESSIONALS FROM GOVERNMENT, ACADEMIA, AND THE PRIVATE, AND NGO SECTORS IN WEATHER INFORMATION AND SERVICES. THEY WILL ALSO INCLUDE HEALTH AND MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS WHOSE JOB IS TO KEEP COMMUNITIES SAFE AND HEALTHY. THE IN-PERSON MEETINGS INCLUDE ONE AT THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY (AMS) ANNUAL MEETING IN JANUARY 2026. THIS NATIONAL MEETING HAS OVER 5000 ATTENDEES, MANY OF WHOM WORK AT THE INTERSECTION OF WEATHER AND HEALTH. ANOTHER IS THE AMS WASHINGTON FORUM IN APRIL, 2026. THIS CONVENING BRINGS TOGETHER THOUGHT LEADERS FROM GOVERNMENT AND THE ACADEMIC, PRIVATE, AND NGO SECTORS. THE LAST FORMAL IN-PERSON MEETING WILL HAPPEN JUST BEFORE OR AFTER THE AMS SUMMER COMMUNITY MEETING IN AUGUST, 2026 WHERE COLLABORATION ACROSS THE WEATHER ENTERPRISE IS FACILITATED AND EMPHASIZED. VIRTUAL WORKING GROUPS WILL ALSO CONVENE IN THE INTERIM BETWEEN IN-PERSON MEETINGS TO ENABLE CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN ALL INTERESTED PARTIES ON A VARIETY OF WEATHER AND HEALTH RELATED ISSUES. THESE CONVENINGS ARE DESIGNED TO RESULT IN NEW AND/OR EXPANDED COLLABORATIONS TO FOSTER HIGH-IMPACT, ACTION-ORIENTED INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH BETWEEN THOSE IN THE WEATHER AND HEALTH COMMUNITIES WITH A GOAL OF ADVANCING AND ACCELERATING OUR HOW TO BETTER ADDRESS ISSUES IMPACTING HUMAN HEALTH IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING AND INCREASINGLY UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER PRESENT AND FUTURE. THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY (AMS) PROJECT ATMOSPHERE WORKSHOP PROVIDES AN ACTIVE VENUE FOR NOAA/NASA EARTH SCIENCE COLLABORATION REVIEWING THE STATE OF THE SCIENCE IN BOTH INSTITUTIONS AND SUPPORTS THE STRATEGIC PLANS OF BOTH ORGANIZATIONS. PROJECT ATMOSPHERE WILL BRING TOGETHER K-12 EDUCATORS TO LEARN HOW TO MONITOR NATURAL DISASTERS SUCH AS SEVERE WEATHER HURRICANES AND WINTER WEATHER. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO DEMONSTRATE TO TEACHERS HOW THEY CAN USE THESE DATA AND RESOURCES WITH STUDENTS AND IN PEERTRAINING ACTIVITIES. THE WORKSHOP IS A KEY COMPONENT OF THE PROJECT ATMOSPHERE COURSE WHEREBY PARTICIPANTS GAIN GRADUATE CREDIT FOR COMPLETION OF ALL REQUIREMENTS INCLUDING THE CONDUCT OF POST-WORKSHOP PEER-TRAINING SESSIONS. NOAA PROVIDES FOUNDATIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE PROJECT ATMOSPHERE COURSE AND NASA SUPPORT WILL SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AND ENABLE NASA MISSION DATA AND RESOURCES TO TAKE A MORE PROMINENT POSITION IN THE CURRICULA. THE IN-PERSON PORTION OF THE WORKSHOP WILL BE HELD FROM 28 JULY - 3 AUGUST 2019 AT THE NOAA NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TRAINING CENTER IN KANSAS CITY MO. PARTICIPANTS WILL BE COMPETITIVELY SELECTED USING A RUBRIC THAT CONSIDERS INSTITUTIONAL LEADERSHIP SCHOOLS WITH A 50% OR GREATER POPULATION OF UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY STUDENTS AND ADMINISTRATOR SUPPORT. PROJECT ATMOSPHERE IS FOR K-12 TEACHERS WHO CURRENTLY TEACH SCIENCE COURSES WITH ATMOSPHERIC CONTENT AND THOSE SEEKING TO INCORPORATE THESE STEM CONCEPTS IN THEIR CLASSROOMS. SINCE 1992 MORE THAN 500 TEACHERS HAVE ATTENDED PROJECT ATMOSPHERE WORKSHOPS. MANY OF THE ABOVE PHENOMENA, WHETHER RELATED TO CLIMATE CHANGE OR THE IMPACT OF PEOPLE ON THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT, ESPECIALLY THOSE RELATED TO ATMOSPHERIC TRANSPORT AND OTHER AIR-BORNE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROCESSES, HAVE IMPOSED SIGNIFICANT AND SERIOUS IMPACTS ON HUMAN HEALTH. THESE IMPACTS ARE BEING FELT NOT ONLY IN THE US, BUT WORLDWIDE. TO INFORM THE PUBLIC OF THESE RISKS AND EXPLORE THE FEASIBILITY OF POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS, THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY (AMS), A PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY OF 13,000 ATMOSPHERIC SCIENTISTS; COMPANIES; AND ENTHUSIASTS, WILL CARRY OUT AN INFORMATION GATHERING ACTIVITY TO COLLECT INPUT FROM ITS CONSTITUENTS ON ISSUES IN CLIMATE AND ATMOSPHERIC PROCESSES THAT HAVE IMPACTS ON HUMAN HEALTH AND THAT ARE PRIMED TO BE QUICKLY ADDRESSED/RESOLVED. A REPORT, SUMMARIZING THE OUTCOME OF THIS SURVEY, WILL BE GENERATED AND MADE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC VIA PUBLICATION ON THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY WEBSITE AND PRESENTED TO THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION DIRECTORATE OF GEOSCIENCES. KEY OUTCOMES WILL BE THE IDENTIFICATION OF ATMOSPHERIC CHANGES AND PROCESSES WITH THE HIGHEST HUMAN-HEALTH IMPACTS RESULTING FROM POLLUTION AND CLIMATE CHANGE THAT ARE PRIMED FOR IMMEDIATE RESOLUTION AND/OR INTERVENTION. BROADER IMPACTS OF THE ACTIVITY WILL A FOCUS ON IMPROVING OUR UNDERSTANDING AND MITIGATION OF ATMOSPHERICALLY RELATED ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES ON HUMAN HEALTH. THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY (AMS) WILL CONDUCT A BROAD, INCLUSIVE, RESULTS-DRIVEN SURVEY OF ITS CONSTITUENTS WHICH CONSIST OF SCIENTISTS AND STUDENTS AS WELL AS INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS IN THE ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES AND WEATHER/CLIMATE PREDICTION. THIS INFORMATION COLLECTION EXERCISE WILL GATHER IDEAS AND TARGET AREAS WHERE GEOSCIENTISTS, COMMUNITIES, TOXICOLOGISTS, AND MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS CAN COME TOGETHER TO ACCELERATE OUR NATION'S ABILITY TO MITIGATE AND MINIMIZE HUMAN HEALTH IMPACTS OF CHANGES IN OUR ENVIRONMENT DUE TO CLIMATE AND ANTHROPOGENIC ACTIVITIES. RESULTS OF THE SURVEY WILL BE SUMMARIZED TO PROVIDE A ROADMAP FOR THE CREATION OF POTENTIAL WORKABLE SOLUTIONS TO HELP AMELIORATE THE IMPACTS OF THE ENVIRONMENT ON HUMAN HEALTH AND SOCIETY. IN THE FINAL REPORT TARGETS WILL BE IDENTIFIED THAT CAN BE ADDRESSED IN A SIGNIFICANT WAY WITHIN A 2 TO 3-YEAR TIMEFRAME. INFORMATION GATHERING WILL INCLUDE ONLINE SURVEY VEHICLES, VIRTUAL GATHERINGS, ONE-ON-ONE DISCUSSIONS WITH EXPERTS, AND BROAD OUTREACH ACROSS THE ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES. AN IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE SURVEY EFFORT WILL BE ENGAGEMENT OF EARLY CAREER SCIENTISTS AND MEMBERS OF GROUPS HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN THE SCIENCES. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.

HOWEVER, THERE ARE VERY FEW ATMOSPHERIC SCIENTISTS BECOMING ENTREPRENEURS AND CREATING NOVEL NEW PRODUCTS AND SERVICES THAT BOTH BENEFIT SOCIETY AND HELP DRIVE THE ECONOMY FORWARD. TO IDENTIFY THE REASON FOR THIS PAUCITY OF PARTICIPATION IN INNOVATION ECOSYSTEMS, THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY (AMS) WILL HOLD A SERIES OF VIRTUAL EVENTS TO SURVEY ITS BROAD MEMBERSHIP. THE CONVERSATIONS WILL ILLUMINATE THE FACTORS THAT PREVENT THEM FROM INITIATING COMMERCIAL VENTURES AND BECOMING ENTREPRENEURS. BROADER IMPACTS OF THE WORK INCLUDE UNCOVERING THE INCENTIVES, TRAINING, OPPORTUNITIES, AND EDUCATIONAL VEHICLES MOST LIKELY TO CREATE A CADRE OF ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE AND METEOROLOGICAL ENTREPRENEURS AND STARTUP FOUNDERS, INCLUDING ROBUST REPRESENTATION FROM EARLY CAREER SCIENTISTS AND MEMBER OF UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS. THE AMS WILL MADE PUBLIC THE REPORT OF THEIR FINDINGS BY POSTING IT ON THE AMS WEBSITE. TO SOLICIT IDEAS ON DEVELOPING ENTREPRENEURIAL TALENT AND SPEED THE PACE OF INNOVATION IN THE ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES, THE 12,000+ MEMBER STRONG AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY, THE LARGEST PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY OF WEATHER AND CLIMATE SCIENTISTS IN THE US, WILL RUN A SERIES OF BROAD, INCLUSIVE, AND RESULTS-DRIVEN VIRTUAL ACTIVITIES. THESE ARE FOCUSED ON ENGAGING ALL SEGMENTS OF THE ATMOSPHERIC AND SPACE SCIENCE AND METEOROLOGICAL COMMUNITIES, WITH A SPECIFIC FOCUS ON THOSE WHO ARE EARLY CAREER AND FROM GROUPS TRADITIONALLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN SCIENCE. INFORMATION WILL BE OBTAINED VIA ONLINE SURVEYS, VIRTUAL CONVENINGS OF MEMBERS, CROWDSOURCING EVENTS, ONE-ON-ONE CONVERSATIONS, AND PANELS OF EXPERTS. THE GOAL IS TO COLLECT AND SYNTHESIZE IDEAS FROM AMS CONSTITUENTS ON WHAT INCENTIVES, TRAINING, OR GAP FILLING NEEDS TO TAKE PLACE TO INCREASE AND ACCELERATE MORE INVOLVEMENT OF ATMOSPHERIC SCIENTISTS IN THE ENTREPRENEURIAL PROCESS, AS WELL AS INCREASE THE NUMBER OF ATMOSPHERIC AND METEOROLOGICALLY RELEVANT ENTERPRISES LED BY FOUNDERS AND CEOS COMING FROM THESE FIELDS. THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY (AMS) PROJECT ATMOSPHERE 6-WEEK SUMMER PROGRAM WITH FOCUS ON A ONE-WEEK RESIDENCE WORKSHOP PROVIDES AN ACTIVE VENUE FOR NOAA/NASA EARTH SCIENCE COLLABORATION REVIEWING THE STATE OF THE SCIENCE IN BOTH INSTITUTIONS AND SUPPORTS THE STRATEGIC PLANS OF BOTH ORGANIZATIONS. PROJECT ATMOSPHERE WILL BUILD THE CAPACITY OF PEER TRAINERS IN SATELLITE DATA INTERPRETATION RELATED TO NATURAL DISASTERS SUCH AS HURRICANES FLOODING AND WILDFIRES. THE PROJECT WILL DEMONSTRATE TO PARTICIPANTS HOW THEY CAN USE THESE DATA AND RESOURCES IN PEER-TRAINING ACTIVITIES. THE RESIDENCE WORKSHOP IS A KEY COMPONENT OF THE PROJECT ATMOSPHERE PROGRAM WHEREBY PARTICIPANTS GAIN GRADUATE CREDIT FOR COMPLETION OF ALL REQUIREMENTS INCLUDING THE CONDUCT OF POSTWORKSHOP PEER-TRAINING SESSIONS. NOAA PROVIDES FOUNDATIONAL SUPPORT FOR PROJECT ATMOSPHERE AND CONTINUED NASA SUPPORT WILL MAINTAIN A STRONG PARTICIPANT GROUP AND THE INCORPORATION OF NASA MISSION DATA AND RESOURCES. THE RESIDENCE WORKSHOP WILL BE HELD FROM 25-31 JULY 2021 AT THE NOAA NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TRAINING CENTER IN KANSAS CITY MO. IN THE CASE OF CONTINUED COVID-19 RELATED RESTRICTIONS AMS IS PREPARED TO SWITCH TO THE VIRTUAL RESIDENCE MODEL THAT IT USED IN SUMMER 2020. PARTICIPANTS WILL BE COMPETITIVELY SELECTED USING A RUBRIC THAT CONSIDERS INSTITUTIONAL LEADERSHIP COMMUNITIES WITH SIGNIFICANT MINORITY POPULATIONS ESSAY RESPONSES TO QUESTIONS DESIGNED TO BE BROADLY INCLUSIVE RATHER THAN RELYING ON THE ACCUMULATION OF PAST PRIVILEGE IN RESUMES AND STRONG ADMINISTRATOR SUPPORT. PROJECT ATMOSPHERE IS A LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE CONTENT CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAM. SINCE 1992 MORE THAN 600 PEER TRAINERS HAVE ATTENDED PROJECT ATMOSPHERE. THE PROJECT ATMOSPHERE WORKSHOP FOCUSES ON GOVERNMENTAL SCIENTIFIC AND PROGRAMMATIC PRESENTERS GROUP WORK ON WEATHER MODULES AND FIELD EXPERIENCES.
