DEVELOPING AND STUDYING A THREE HOUR DOCUMENTARY SERIES AND LIVE GAME STREAMING SHOWING THE RELATIONSHIP OF ENGINEERING TO THE EVERYDAY BUILT WORLD -ENGINEERING IS ARGUABLY ONE OF THE MOST CRITICAL SKILLS IN ANY SOCIETY, FROM BUILDING BRIDGES AND HOMES, TO DESIGNING CELL PHONES AND LIFE-SAVING MEDICAL DEVICES. YET MANY AMERICANS DO NOT CONSIDER ENGINEERING TO BE ESSENTIAL OR RELEVANT TO THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES, AND MAY EVEN QUESTION ITS POSITIVE IMPACT ON SOCIETY. WHILE THERE HAVE BEEN GAINS IN THE NUMBER OF WOMEN AND UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITIES IN STEM PROFESSIONS OVER THE PAST FEW DECADES, THEIR NUMBERS IN THE FIELD REMAIN DISPROPORTIONATELY LOW. THE BUILT WORLD INTEGRATED MULTIMEDIA AND RESEARCH PROJECT THEREFORE AIMS TO EXPAND ACCESS TO ENGINEERING CONTENT THROUGH THE LENS OF ?INCLUSIVE ENGINEERING,? WHICH HIGHLIGHTS HOW PROBLEM-SOLVERS OF ALL AGES, GENDERS, BACKGROUNDS, AND PERSPECTIVES APPROACH AND OVERCOME CHALLENGES TO INNOVATE. THE PROJECT APPLIES THIS CONCEPT THROUGH THE CREATION OF BUILT WORLD, A THREE-HOUR DOCUMENTARY SERIES FOR BROADCAST ON PBS STATIONS NATIONWIDE, AND A COMPLEMENTARY INTERACTIVE ESCAPE GAME STREAMED LIVE ON TWITCH, WHERE INDIVIDUALS OF ALL AGES AND BACKGROUNDS CAN PLAY AND SOLVE ENGINEERING CHALLENGES TOGETHER. THERE IS A NEED FOR EFFECTIVE REMOTE AND VIRTUAL INTERACTION TO SUPPORT INFORMAL STEM LEARNING, AND LIVE STREAMING GAME PLATFORMS PRESENT A PROMISING APPROACH TO FILLING THIS NEED. BUILT WORLD IS POISED TO ADVANCE THE FIELD THROUGH: (1) CONTENT - CREATING HIGH-QUALITY INCLUSIVE ENGINEERING CONTENT ACROSS MULTIPLE PLATFORMS TO REACH A WIDE AUDIENCE (BUILT WORLD DOCUMENTARY, DIGITAL REPORTING AND SHORT FORM VIDEOS, COMMUNITY OUTREACH CAMPAIGN); (2) APPLIED RESEARCH - DESIGNING AND STUDYING HOW LIVE-STREAMING, COLLABORATIVE PLATFORMS CAN SERVE AS SAFE AND INCLUSIVE SPACES FOR ENGINEERING LEARNING; AND (3) BEST PRACTICES - EXPLORING HOW AUDIENCES ENGAGE WITH INCLUSIVE ENGINEERING ON DIFFERENT PLATFORMS?A TRADITIONAL DOCUMENTARY FORMAT (BUILT WORLD) VERSUS AN INTERACTIVE, COLLABORATIVE SPACE (TWITCH GAME)?AND IDENTIFYING WHAT LEARNING OUTCOMES MIGHT BE EXPECTED ON EACH. A THREE-PHASE RESEARCH DESIGN AIMS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT MOTIVATES USERS TO ENGAGE WITH STEM CONTENT ON TWITCH; HOW TO DEFINE AND MEASURE LEARNING OUTCOMES ASSOCIATED WITH THE PLATFORM; AND HOW TO MITIGATE THE RISK OF TOXIC ENVIRONMENTS IN ONLINE COMMUNITIES BY FOSTERING SAFE SPACES FOR A DIVERSITY OF GAMERS. PHASE 1 INFORMS THE INITIAL DESIGN OF THE TWITCH GAME AND AUDIENCE INTERACTION STRATEGIES AND SEEKS TO ANSWER: WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO MEASURE INFORMAL LEARNING ON TWITCH? WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO DESIGN A TWITCH CHANNEL TO CREATE AN INCLUSIVE SPACE WHILE OPTIMIZING LEARNER ENGAGEMENT? PHASE 2 IS THE CORE FOCUS OF THE RESEARCH AND USES A SEMI-EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN TO ANSWER QUESTIONS SUCH AS: IS THERE EVIDENCE OF LEARNING ON TWITCH, AND WHAT TYPE OF LEARNING IS HAPPENING? WHAT IS THE DIGITAL CULTURE THAT EMERGES? PHASE 3 ASSESSES THE PAIRING OF THE DOCUMENTARY SERIES WITH THE TWITCH GAME TO MAXIMIZE INFORMAL STEM LEARNING AND IS GUIDED BY QUESTIONS SUCH AS: HOW DOES INCLUSIVE ENGINEERING CONTENT PRESENTED ON TWO PLATFORMS (TWITCH GAME AND BUILT WORLD SERIES) MEDIATE LEARNING OUTCOMES? HOW DOES INCLUSIVE ENGINEERING CONTENT PRESENTED ON TWO PLATFORMS SHAPE LEARNERS? EXPERIENCES OF INCLUSIVITY AND BELONGING? KNOWLEDGE GENERATED THROUGH THE BUILT WORLD PROJECT WILL OFFER TOOLS AND BEST PRACTICES TO OTHER STEM MEDIA PRODUCERS SO THAT THEY MAY ALSO LEVERAGE LIVE STREAMING PLATFORMS FOR LEARNING. THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY THE ADVANCING INFORMAL STEM LEARNING (AISL) PROGRAM, WHICH SEEKS TO (A) ADVANCE NEW APPROACHES TO AND EVIDENCE-BASED UNDERSTANDING OF THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF STEM LEARNING IN INFORMAL ENVIRONMENTS; (B) PROVIDE MULTIPLE PATHWAYS FOR BROADENING ACCESS TO AND ENGAGEMENT IN STEM LEARNING EXPERIENCES; (C) ADVANCE INNOVATIVE RESEARCH ON AND ASSESSMENT OF STEM LEARNING IN INFORMAL ENVIRONMENTS; AND (D) ENGAGE THE PUBLIC OF ALL AGES IN LEARNING STEM IN INFORMAL ENVIRONMENTS. CO-DESIGNING MEDIA TO FOSTER JOINT PEER-TO-PEER ENGAGEMENT, PROMOTE ENGINEERING LEARNING, AND EXPAND REACH TO YOUNG CHILDREN -SUCCESSFUL PEER-TO-PEER PRACTICES IN INFORMAL SCIENCE LEARNING (ISL) ARE OFTEN NOT WELL DEFINED, BUT FURTHER INVESTIGATION HAS THE POTENTIAL TO HELP UNCOVER HOW TO MOTIVATE AND SCAFFOLD CHILDREN'S JOINT LEARNING IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING. TEAM HAMSTER!, A PBS KIDS INTERACTIVE DIGITAL SERIES THAT HELPS YOUTH THINK CREATIVELY AND USE ENGINEERING SKILLS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS WITH EVERYDAY TOOLS, WILL BE USED TO ACHIEVE THE GOALS OF THIS PROJECT. ONE GOAL IS TO INVESTIGATE HOW ENGINEERING MEDIA CAN BE INTENTIONALLY CO-DESIGNED WITH CHILDREN FROM DIVERSE, ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED BACKGROUNDS IN ORDER TO FOSTER PEER-TO-PEER ENGAGEMENT AND LEARNING. THESE NATURALLY OCCURRING, PEER-TO-PEER INTERACTIONS COULD BE INVESTIGATED TO DETERMINE WHICH HOLD THE MOST POTENTIAL FOR FOSTERING LEARNING IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING. ADDITIONALLY, THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO PROVIDE A NEW STANDARD FOR HOW PRODUCERS CAN CO-CREATE MEDIA THAT REFLECTS THE INTERESTS, HABITS, AND LIVED EXPERIENCES OF THE CHILDREN THEY AIM TO SERVE. GIVEN THE MEDIA HABITS OF TODAY'S CHILDREN, WHO OFTEN VIEW VIDEOS, PLAY VIDEO GAMES, AND DISCUSS STRATEGIES AND PREFERENCES WITH THEIR FRIENDS AND SIBLINGS, TEAM HAMSTER!'S 35 MILLION DIGITAL GAME PLAYS AND 55 MILLION VIDEO VIEWS CAN HAVE A SIGNIFICANT REACH AND IMPACT ON THE YOUTH WHO ARE SERVED. THE PROJECT USES A PARTICIPATORY CO-DESIGN APPROACH WITH FOUR GROUPS OF COLLABORATORS: YOUTH, MEDIA DESIGNERS, YOUTH DEVELOPMENT EXPERTS, AND STEM EXPERTS. THERE WILL BE AN IMPACT STUDY UTILIZING AN EXPERIMENTAL-CONTROL/PRE-TEST-POST-TEST DESIGN, WITH EQUAL GROUPS OF APPROXIMATELY 120 CHILDREN AND THEIR CAREGIVERS. DATA FROM TECHNOLOGY PROBES WILL BE ANALYZED TO CREATE PROFILES OF YOUTH USAGE, WITH A FOCUS ON PEER-TO-PEER ENGAGEMENT. RESEARCH WILL BE USED TO ADDRESS THESE QUESTIONS: 1) WHAT PEER-TO-PEER JOINT MEDIA ENGAGEMENT PRACTICES ARE MOST PROMISING FOR FOSTERING ENGINEERING LEARNING AND EXPLORATION AMONG DIVERSE, ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED 5 TO 7 YEAR-OLD CHILDREN, AND HOW MIGHT NEW DESIGN FEATURES OF DIGITAL GAMES AND SUPPORTING VIDEOS PROMOTE THESE PRACTICES? 2) WHAT DESIGN FEATURES OF DIGITAL GAMES AND SUPPORTING VIDEOS BEST PROMOTE MEDIA-BASED PEER-TO-PEER ENGAGEMENT AROUND ENGINEERING LEARNING AND EXPLORATION? 3) TO WHAT EXTENT DO THE DIGITAL GAMES DEVELOPED THROUGH THIS PROJECT FOSTER ENGINEERING LEARNING AND EXPLORATION? 4) WHAT ARE BEST PRACTICES FOR DEVELOPING A PARTICIPATORY CO-DESIGN PROCESS, OCCURRING BOTH ONLINE AND IN PERSON, THAT IS CENTERED ON THE CREATION OF DIGITAL GAME FEATURES AND SUPPORTING VIDEOS THAT EXPAND THE REACH OF DIGITAL ENGINEERING GAMES? THIS TYPE 5, RESEARCH IN SUPPORT OF WIDE-REACHING PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT WITH STEM, PROJECT IS FUNDED BY THE ADVANCING INFORMAL STEM LEARNING (AISL) PROGRAM, WHICH SUPPORTS PROJECTS THAT: (A) CONTRIBUTE TO RESEARCH AND PRACTICE THAT CONSIDERS INFORMAL STEM LEARNING'S ROLE IN EQUITY AND BELONGING IN STEM; (B) PROMOTE PERSONAL AND EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS IN STEM; (C) ADVANCE PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT IN SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY; (D) FOSTER INTEREST IN STEM CAREERS; (E) CREATE AND ENHANCE THE THEORETICAL AND EMPIRICAL FOUNDATIONS FOR EFFECTIVE INFORMAL STEM LEARNING; (F) IMPROVE COMMUNITY VIBRANCY; AND/OR (G) ENHANCE SCIENCE COMMUNICATION AND THE PUBLIC'S ENGAGEMENT IN AND UNDERSTANDING OF STEM AND STEM PROCESSES. PBCORE DATA MODEL PROJECT [THE PBCORE DATA MODEL PROJECT WILL UNDERTAKE RESEARCH INTO INSTITUTIONAL NEEDS AND METADATA INFRASTRUCTURE TO DEVELOP A SIMPLIFIED DATA MODEL FOR THE PBCORE METADATA SCHEMA THAT CAN BE REPRESENTED WITHIN A VARIETY OF TOOLS AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS. THE PROJECT WILL GENERATE DOCUMENTATION OF THE NEW MODEL AND AN IMPROVED SUITE OF TOOLS DEMONSTRATING ITS USAGE, INCLUDING THE PBSPACE PLUGIN AND PBCORE CATALOGING TOOL, AS WELL AS DETAILED CASE STUDIES SHOWING HOW DIFFERENT KINDS OF CULTURAL HERITAGE ORGANIZATIONS CAN ADOPT THE DATA MODEL. GBH STAFF WILL SIMULTANEOUSLY UPDATE AND IMPROVE FIX IT+, A CROWDSOURCING TOOL TO EDIT TRANSCRIPTS, BY AUTOMATING FORMERLY MANUAL WORKFLOWS TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR A NON-DEVELOPER TO IMPLEMENT. THE PROJECT TEAM WILL ENCOURAGE INSTALLATION AND USE OF THE TOOLS BY DISTRIBUTING THE CODE AND CONDUCTING OUTREACH TO THE LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES COMMUNITIES SO THEY CAN CREATE AFFORDABLE AND ACCURATE TRANSCRIPTS THAT WILL IMPROVE DISCOVERABILITY OF DIGITAL AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS IN COLLECTIONS. CONFERENCE: ADVANCING THE FIELD OF DATA SCIENCE IN THE EARLY CHILDHOOD YEARS -THIS SET OF WORKSHOPS ON DATA SCIENCE ADDRESSES A CRITICAL NEED FOR THE U.S., INCREASING STEM LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE NATION'S YOUNGEST LEARNERS. DATA SCIENCE SKILLS (COLLECTING, ORGANIZING, VISUALIZING, ANALYZING, INTERPRETING, AND SHARING DATA FOR YOURSELF AND OTHER PEOPLE) ARE CRUCIAL FOR 21ST CENTURY LEARNERS AND WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY ESSENTIAL TO NAVIGATE THE EDUCATIONAL PATHWAYS AND WORKFORCE NEEDS OF THE FUTURE. DATA SCIENCE IS FAST BECOMING A DOMINANT PART OF SCIENTIFIC, ECONOMIC, AND SOCIAL SCIENTIFIC REASONING, AS WELL AS A NECESSARY PERSPECTIVE FOR MAKING LIFE DECISIONS THAT RELY ON DATA. BUT THERE IS LITTLE WORK IN EITHER RESEARCH OR DEVELOPMENT WITH STUDENTS YOUNGER THAN 2ND GRADE, AND EVEN LESS FOCUSING ON CHILDREN NOT YET IN KINDERGARTEN. BY EXPANDING KNOWLEDGE IN AN EMERGENT CONTENT AREA WHERE YOUNG CHILDREN ARE CURRENTLY UNDERSERVED, THIS SET OF THREE WORKSHOPS WILL BUILD CAPACITY TO CREATE RIGOROUS, EQUITABLE, INCLUSIVE, AND CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE DATA SCIENCE TEACHING RESOURCES, A NECESSITY FOR SCHOOL READINESS IN THE EARLY CHILDHOOD YEARS. THE SERIES OF THREE, CUMULATIVE WORKSHOPS WILL BRING TOGETHER LEADING DATA SCIENCE EDUCATION RESEARCHERS, EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION RESEARCHERS, AND MEDIA RESEARCHERS AND DEVELOPERS WITH THE PURPOSE OF BUILDING KNOWLEDGE TO ACHIEVE TWO RELATED GOALS: (1) DEFINE THE SCOPE OF THE DATA SKILLS CHILDREN AGES 3-7 YEARS ARE CAPABLE OF ATTAINING; AND (2) IDENTIFY STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVELY NURTURING DATA SKILLS IN THESE EARLY CHILDHOOD YEARS. THE FIRST WORKSHOP WILL BE A ONE-DAY, IN-PERSON EVENT WITH APPROXIMATELY 25 PARTICIPANTS (EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING SCIENTISTS; EDUCATIONAL RESEARCHERS WHO FOCUS ON EARLY CHILDHOOD AND/OR DATA; EARLY CHILDHOOD RESEARCHERS WHO FOCUS ON CULTURAL RELEVANCE; EARLY CHILDHOOD PRACTITIONERS, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO THINK ABOUT SOCIAL EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT; MEDIA EDUCATORS WITH EXPERTISE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD STEM; AND EDUCATIONAL POLICY EXPERTS WHO FOCUS ON DATA). THE SECOND AND THIRD WORKSHOPS WILL BE HELD ONLINE AND ARE OPEN TO ANYONE WHO HAS AN INTEREST IN THE TOPIC, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO DID NOT ATTEND THE IN-PERSON WORKSHOP. THE ONLINE WORKSHOPS WILL BUILD ON THE FIRST WORKSHOP'S LEARNINGS TO FURTHER ADVANCE THE PROJECT'S PROGRESS TOWARDS AN EARLY CHILDHOOD DATA SCIENCE LEARNING FRAMEWORK. ALL THREE WORKSHOPS WILL BE ORGANIZED AROUND THESE GUIDING QUESTIONS: 1. WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED FROM CURRENT/PAST RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS THAT PROVIDES A STARTING PLACE FOR THINKING ABOUT THE DATA SKILLS AND MINDSETS YOUNG CHILDREN COULD DEVELOP? 2. WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE NATURE OF YOUNG CHILDREN'S CAPACITY FOR SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND HOW CAN THAT INFORM THE DEVELOPMENT OF AGE-APPROPRIATE DATA SCIENCE LEARNING GOALS, WHICH CAN BE TAUGHT BOTH EQUITABLY AND RIGOROUSLY? 3. HOW DO WE ENSURE THAT WE ARE EXPLORING DATA SCIENCE SO THAT IT IS CULTURALLY RELEVANT FOR A DIVERSE ARRAY OF CHILDREN? EVALUATION OF THE WORKSHOPS WILL FOCUS ON THE UTILITY AND COMPLETENESS OF THE EARLY CHILDHOOD DATA SCIENCE LEARNING FRAMEWORK AND THE EXTENT TO WHICH THE MEETINGS CATALYZED NEW WORK AND/OR NEW PARTNERSHIPS. FOLLOWING THE WORKSHOPS, THE PROJECT TEAM WILL FINALIZE THE FRAMEWORK, WHICH CAN BE USED AND BUILT UPON BY CURRICULUM DEVELOPERS, FORMAL AND INFORMAL EDUCATORS, MEDIA DESIGNERS, AND RESEARCHERS BEYOND THIS GRANT. IMPORTANTLY, THIS PROJECT COULD ULTIMATELY INCREASE THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN WHO ARE EQUIPPED WITH DATA SCIENCE SKILLS AND INCREASE THE NUMBER OF EDUCATORS WHO CAN CONFIDENTLY SUPPORT CHILDREN'S DATA SCIENCE SKILLS. THE DISCOVERY RESEARCH PREK-12 PROGRAM (DRK-12) IS AN APPLIED RESEARCH PROGRAM THAT SEEKS TO SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCE THE LEARNING AND TEACHING OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY,ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) BY PREK-12 STUDENTS AND TEACHERS. PROJECTS IN THE DRK-12 PROGRAM BUILD ON FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH IN STEM EDUCATION AND PRIOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS THAT PROVIDE THEORETICAL AND EMPIRICAL JUSTIFICATION FOR FUNDED PROJECTS. THE PROGRAM WILL FUND A COHORT OF EIGHT STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITIES IN THE SOUTH, WEST, MIDWEST, AND HAWAII TO INVENTORY, CATALOG, DIGITIZE, AND DIGITALLY PRESERVE TARGET AUDIOVISUAL COLLECTIONS AT PUBLIC MEDIA ORGANIZATIONS SERVING UNDERREPRESENTED POPULATIONS AROUND THE COUNTRY. PARTNER UNIVERSITIES WILL UTILIZE EQUIPMENT FUNDED BY THE GRANT TO DEVELOP PLANS FOR ONGOING AUDIOVISUAL PRESERVATION TRAINING AMONG THEIR STUDENT BODIES. THE FELLOWS WILL DIGITIZE MATERIALS, WHICH WILL THEN BE PRESERVED OVER THE LONG TERM IN THE AMERICAN ARCHIVE OF PUBLIC BROADCASTING FOR THE BENEFIT OF RESEARCHERS AND SCHOLARS.

AMERICAN ICONS IV ON STUDIO 360 [<EM>AMERICAN ICONS IV</EM> WILL BE A FRESH NEW SERIES OF SPECIALLY PRODUCED PROGRAMS AND STORIES TO BE BROADCAST WITHIN STUDIO 360, PRI'S ONE-HOUR PUBLIC RADIO SHOW ABOUT THE ARTS, IDEAS, AND HUMANITIES WHICH IS CO-PRODUCED WITH NEW YORK PUBLIC RADIO AND AIRED NATIONALLY TO OVER 600,000 LISTENERS. EACH WEEK, ON-AIR HOST KURT ANDERSEN LEADS AN EXPLORATION OF CREATIVITY AND THE ARTS, THROUGH FEATURE STORIES AND LIVELY CONVERSATIONS WITH ARTISTS, CRITICS AND THOUGHT LEADERS. THE GOAL OF THE <EM>AMERICAN ICON</EM> SERIES IS TO EXAMINE TIME-TESTED WORKS OF LITERATURE, MUSIC, FILM, DESIGN, OR VISUAL ART THAT HAVE HAD SIGNIFICANT AND ENDURING IMPACT ON AMERICAN CULTURE AND SOCIETY.
