OPENING DECEMBER 13, 2025, PEM WILL COMMEMORATE THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE HALL BY UNVEILING THIS LONG-TERM COMPREHENSIVE INSTALLATION?THE FIRST IN THIS HISTORIC SPACE IN 25 YEARS. CO-CURATED BY DR. DAN FINAMORE, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF EXHIBITIONS AND CURATOR OF MARITIME ART AND HISTORY, AND DR. GEORGE SCHWARTZ, CURATOR-AT-LARGE, THE EXHIBITION WILL BRING TOGETHER MORE THAN 350 ARTWORKS AND OBJECTS FROM PEM?S ORIGINAL COLLECTIONS. PEABODY ESSEX MUSEUM WILL CREATE A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE THAT WILL IMPROVE THE WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT AND FILL GAPS IN EXPERTISE, WHILE CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT THAT SUPPORTS STAFF IN THEIR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND VARIED LEARNING, WORKING, AND MANAGEMENT STYLES. PROJECT ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING A LEARNING AGENDA FOR APPROXIMATELY 243 STAFF AS WELL AS ESTABLISHING A LEADERSHIP PROGRAM, WHICH WILL BE MADE UP OF 53 MANAGERS AND STAFF INTERESTED IN BECOMING MANAGERS. A SERIES OF CUSTOMIZED SKILL-BUILDING WORKSHOPS FOR ALL STAFF THAT INCLUDE MANAGERIAL, COMMUNICATION, AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT TRAINING WILL BE COMPOSED BY SENIOR STAFF FROM EMPLOYEE EXPERIENCE, EXECUTIVE OFFICE, COLLECTION MANAGEMENT, AND EDUCATION AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT DIVISIONS. AS A RESULT OF THE PROJECT, STAFF WILL BE BETTER ABLE TO NAVIGATE PUBLIC EXPECTATIONS AND PROVIDE MUSEUM EXPERIENCES THAT RESPOND TO A WIDE RANGE OF DIVERSE AUDIENCES’ NEEDS AND INTERESTS.

THE PEABODY ESSEX MUSEUM WILL CATALOG, PHOTOGRAPH, MOVE, AND REHOUSE OVER 8,000 SMALL AND MIDSIZE OBJECTS FROM ITS OCEANIC COLLECTION. MUSEUM STAFF WILL ALSO CATALOG AND PHOTOGRAPH AN ADDITIONAL 3,800 LARGE OBJECTS TO PREPARE TO MOVE THEM TO THE MUSEUM’S COLLECTION CENTER, WHICH OFFERS IMPROVED ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS. THE PROJECT WILL SUPPORT TWO TEMPORARY FULL-TIME OCEANIC COLLECTIONS SPECIALISTS, WHO WILL WORK CLOSELY WITH MUSEUM STAFF TO UNDERTAKE PROJECT ACTIVITIES. THE PROJECT WILL IMPROVE THE MUSEUM’S INTELLECTUAL CONTROL OF THE COLLECTION, PROVIDE UPGRADED STORAGE CONDITIONS FOR THE LONG-TERM PRESERVATION OF THE OCEANIC COLLECTION, AND ENHANCE ACCESSIBILITY OF THE COLLECTION FOR MUSEUM STAFF, RESEARCHERS, AND THE PUBLIC. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO ENSURE THAT MEMBERS OF THE PACIFIC ISLAND COMMUNITY HAVE GREATER ACCESS TO THE COLLECTION AND THE CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE FOUND WITHIN IT.
