AS THE LEADING YOUTH GUIDANCE AGENCY IN THE CITY OF NEWPORT, BGCNC PROVIDES A POSITIVE, SAFE AND EXCITING ENVIRONMENT FOR CHILDREN TO LEARN AND GROW. WITH A MEMBERSHIP OF MORE THAN 1,900 INDIVIDUALS AND OUTREACH ACTIVITIES THAT POSITIVELY IMPACT MORE THAN 5,500 YOUTH ANNUALLY, THE CLUB PLAYS A VITAL ROLE IN STRENGTHENING AND SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY IT SERVES. THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB ADMINISTERS THE NEWPORT WORKING CITIES PROJECT, WHOSE VISION IS TO LIFT FAMILIES OUT OF POVERTY THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A WELL-ESTABLISHED, INTEGRATED AND EFFICIENT WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM THAT PREPARES UNEMPLOYED AND UNDEREMPLOYED NEWPORT RESIDENTS FOR HIGHER SKILLED, HIGHER PAYING JOBS AND WHICH ENSURES A PIPELINE OF CANDIDATES ARE AVAILABLE TO FILL VACANCIES IN HIGH DEMAND INDUSTRIES WITHIN THIS CITY. THE PRIORITY AREA THAT THE NEWPORT WORKING CITIES COLLABORATIVE IS ADDRESSING THROUGH THE PROPOSED VISTA PROJECT IS ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY, WHICH ADDRESSES HOUSING, FINANCIAL LITERACY, AND EMPLOYMENT NEEDS OF LOW-INCOME INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES. NEWPORT WORKING CITIES SPECIFICALLY SEEKS TO DECREASE POVERTY IN THE CITY OF NEWPORT OVER THE NEXT DECADE BY 20% THROUGH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS AND SYSTEMIC CHANGES THAT WILL BENEFIT UNEMPLOYED AND/OR UNDEREMPLOYED YOUTH AND ADULTS. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, NEWPORT WORKING CITIES IS SEEKING 4 VISTA MEMBERS TO HELP THE COLLABORATIVE BUILD CAPACITY AND BEGIN TO MOVE THE NEEDLE ON POVERTY. IN YEAR ONE, WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE 4-PERSON VISTA TEAM, NEWPORT WORKING CITIES INTENDS TO PROVIDE JOB SKILLS READINESS TRAININGS AND/OR JOB PLACEMENT ASSISTANCE TO 200 INDIVIDUALS (YOUTH AND ADULTS), WITH 70% OF THOSE SERVED REPORTING INCREASES IN SKILL LEVELS. AN ADDITIONAL GOAL IS TO INCREASE THE CAPACITY OF THE ORGANIZATIONS WHO PARTNER IN THIS IMPORTANT ENDEAVOR.
