THIS PROJECT AIMS TO STUDY ANTI-RAMSEY PROPERTIES OF GRAPHS. IT WAS ORIGINALLY MOTIVATED BY THE PROBLEMS POSED IN RAMSEY THEORY, ONE OF THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL AND THRIVING AREAS IN DISCRETE MATHEMATICS. THE PROJECT FOR GRAPHS NATURALLY EXTENDS TO SOLUTIONS OF EQUATIONS, RESULTING IN AN INTERESTING CONNECTION TO COMBINATORIAL NUMBER THEORY. THE PI WILL INVOLVE BOTH UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS IN THIS PROJECT. THE PI WILL CAREFULLY INTEGRATE EDUCATION WITH RESEARCH BY PROVIDING NECESSARY TOOLS AND EASING STUDENTS INTO RESEARCH. STUDENTS WILL BE EXPOSED TO ALL STAGES OF CONDUCTING ORIGINAL RESEARCH, FROM COLLABORATION WITH EACH OTHER TO WRITING PROCESS, AS WELL AS PRESENTING RESULTS AT CONFERENCES. THE STUDY OF ANTI-RAMSEY PROPERTIES OF GRAPHS AND SOLUTIONS TO EQUATIONS IS A RELATIVELY NEW AND UNEXPLORED RESEARCH AREA. THE PROJECT FOCUSES ON FINDING RAINBOW SUBSTRUCTURES IN COLORED OBJECTS. IN PARTICULAR, THE PI WILL STUDY RAINBOW NUMBERS, THE SMALLEST NUMBER OF COLORS NEEDED TO GUARANTEE A RAINBOW ARITHMETIC PROGRESSION IN A GRAPH, SET OF INTEGERS, OR INTEGERS MODULO N. RESEARCH IN DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS IS OFTEN FOCUSED ON CLOSED SYSTEMS IN WHICH THE DYNAMICS ARE SELF-CONTAINED. IN MANY MODELING SITUATIONS, HOWEVER, SUCH A GLOBAL VIEW IS NOT POSSIBLE, AND IT BECOMES NECESSARY TO STUDY LOCAL SYSTEMS INFLUENCED BY EXTERNAL DYNAMICS, POSSIBLY ON DIFFERENT SPATIAL OR TEMPORAL SCALES. TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THESE PHENOMENA, THE PI WILL STUDY OPEN SYSTEMS IN WHICH MASS OR ENERGY MAY ENTER OR EXIT THROUGH DETERMINISTIC OR RANDOM MECHANISMS, AS WELL AS LARGE-SCALE SYSTEMS OF SMALLER INTERACTING COMPONENTS THAT EXCHANGE MASS OR ENERGY. THESE PROBLEMS ARE STRONGLY MOTIVATED BY CONNECTIONS WITH STATISTICAL MECHANICS AND SEEK TO ADVANCE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS RELATED TO ENERGY TRANSPORT AND DIFFUSION. THIS AWARD WILL ALSO SUPPORT THE INVOLVEMENT OF UNDERGRADUATES IN MATHEMATICS RESEARCH. THE HIGHLY VISUAL NATURE AND PHYSICAL MOTIVATION OF THE PROBLEMS WILL ENABLE THE INVESTIGATOR TO RECRUIT UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN RELATED RESEARCH PROJECTS. SPECIAL EMPHASIS WILL BE GIVEN TO RECRUITING STUDENTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS IN RESEARCH MATHEMATICS. STUDENTS WILL DISSEMINATE RESULTS OF THEIR RESEARCH VIA POSTER SESSIONS, CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS IN PEER-REVIEWED JOURNALS. BY STIMULATING INTEREST IN RESEARCH CAREERS IN MATHEMATICS AND CREATING A PEER COMMUNITY SUPPORTIVE OF THAT INTEREST, THIS AWARD WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE IMPORTANT GOAL OF INTEGRATING RESEARCH AND EDUCATION. THE FUNDED RESEARCH INCLUDES THREE SPECIFIC PROJECTS. THE FIRST PROJECT INVESTIGATES THE STATISTICAL AND THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF BOTH CLASSICAL AND NON-EQUILIBRIUM PARTICLE SYSTEMS WITH COLLISION INTERACTIONS, AN IMPORTANT CLASS OF MODELS FROM STATISTICAL MECHANICS. THE SECOND CONCERNS OPEN SYSTEMS, WHICH RELATE ON THE ONE HAND TO PHYSICAL SYSTEMS IN WHICH MASS OR ENERGY IS ALLOWED TO ESCAPE, AND ON THE OTHER TO THE STUDY OF METASTABLE STATES. THE THIRD PROJECT GENERALIZES OPEN SYSTEMS TO INCLUDE LINKED AND EXTENDED DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS COMPRISED OF TWO OR MORE COMPONENTS THAT EXCHANGE MASS OR ENERGY THROUGH DETERMINISTIC OR RANDOM MECHANISMS. IMPORTANT EXAMPLES INCLUDE THE APERIODIC LORENTZ GAS AND MECHANICAL MODELS OF HEAT CONDUCTION. THE INVESTIGATOR WILL BRING TO BEAR SEVERAL ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES THAT HE HAS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN DEVELOPING FOR THESE CLASSES OF SYSTEMS, INCLUDING HIS RECENT WORK CONCERNING THE SPECTRAL DECOMPOSITION OF TRANSFER OPERATORS FOR DISPERSING PARTICLE SYSTEMS, CONTRACTIONS IN PROJECTIVE CONES DUE TO BIRKHOFF, AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF MARKOV EXTENSIONS ADAPTED TO OPEN SYSTEMS. NONE OF THESE TECHNIQUES REQUIRE MARKOVIAN ASSUMPTIONS ON THE DYNAMICS, MAKING THEM WIDELY APPLICABLE TO A WIDE VARIETY OF NONUNIFORMLY HYPERBOLIC AND PHYSICALLY IMPORTANT SYSTEMS. THE APPLICATION OF THESE TECHNIQUES TO CENTRAL MODELS FROM EQUILIBRIUM AND NON-EQUILIBRIUM STATISTICAL MECHANICS WILL REPRESENT SIGNIFICANT ADVANCES IN THE STUDY OF SUCH SYSTEMS. EFFORTS TO UNDERSTAND THESE TOOLS IN ONE CONTEXT STRENGTHENS THEM AND AIDS IN THEIR APPLICATION TO OTHER AREAS OF MATHEMATICS. THE PROJECT WILL DEVELOP AN INNOVATIVE PEDAGOGICAL STRATEGY THAT INCLUDES CLASSROOM DISCUSSIONS ON AI ETHICS CASE STUDIES AND AN OPEN-ACCESS REPOSITORY OF CASE STUDIES, TO EQUIP STUDENTS WITH PRACTICAL TOOLS FOR ETHICAL DECISION-MAKING. ITS UNIQUE FEATURE IS THE CASE-BASED PLUG-AND-PLAY INSTRUCTIONAL MODULE, WHICH ENSURES ADAPTABILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY BY ACCOMMODATING DIFFERENT LEARNING STYLES AND ENABLING EASY INTEGRATION INTO AI-RELATED COURSES. BY ADVANCING AI EDUCATION WITH A SCALABLE APPROACH TO ETHICS, THE PROJECT SUPPORTS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A RESPONSIBLE AI WORKFORCE AND PROMOTES THE APPLICATION OF ETHICAL PRINCIPLES IN REAL-WORLD AI CHALLENGES. THE PROJECT PLANS TO ADVANCE UNDERSTANDING OF AI ETHICS EDUCATION BY INTEGRATING CASE STUDIES AND GAMIFIED LEARNING MODULES TO ENHANCE UNDERGRADUATE STEM STUDENTS' ENGAGEMENT AND PROFICIENCY, ADDRESSING THE CRITICAL NEED FOR ETHICAL REASONING IN AI DEVELOPMENT. RESEARCH QUESTIONS WILL INVESTIGATE WHETHER ETHICS-FOCUSED TEACHING ENHANCES AI ETHICS INSTRUCTION, HOW REAL-WORLD CASE STUDIES IMPROVE ALGORITHM UNDERSTANDING, IF GAMIFIED MODULES INCREASE ENGAGEMENT AND PROFICIENCY, AND WHICH PEDAGOGICAL FEATURES MOST EFFECTIVELY FOSTER ETHICAL REASONING. ASSESSMENT WILL BE CONDUCTED TO MEASURE COMPREHENSION AND LEARNING EASE. RESULTS WILL BE DISSEMINATED BROADLY, THROUGH PUBLICATIONS, CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS, OPEN ACCESS MECHANISMS AND SOCIAL MEDIA. THE NSF IUSE: EDU PROGRAM SUPPORTS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS TO IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STEM EDUCATION FOR ALL STUDENTS. AUTISM COMPLEXITY AND PARENTAL WELLBEING: THE ROLE OF CARE COORDINATION IN PROMOTING HEALTH EQUITY - PROJECT SUMMARY THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO DETERMINE THE INFLUENCE OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD) CARE COORDINATION SERVICES ON PARENT HEALTH AND STRESS ACCORDING TO GEOGRAPHIC AND SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC FACTORS. SPECIFICALLY, THE AIMS OF THIS STUDY ARE TO ESTABLISH AN ASSESSMENT OF ASD SEVERITY THAT REFLECTS CO-OCCURRING CONDITIONS, DETERMINE THE IMPACT OF CARE COORDINATION ON THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN CHILD ASD AND PARENT OUTCOMES, AND DELINEATE VARIATION IN THE IMPACT OF CARE COORDINATION ON PARENT OUTCOMES BY SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC INFLUENCES, (I.E., RACE/ETHNICITY, RURAL/URBAN AREAS, HEALTH PROFESSIONAL SHORTAGE AREAS). TO ACHIEVE THE AIMS OF THIS PROPOSAL, WE WILL MERGE THE 2016-2019 NATIONAL SURVEY OF CHILDREN’S HEALTH (NSCH) TO CREATE THE LARGEST, NATIONALLY REPRESENTATIVE DATASET THAT INCLUDES CHILD, PARENT, AND HEALTHCARE-RELATED VARIABLES. THE COMBINED SAMPLE INCLUDES 3,313 PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH A CURRENT ASD DIAGNOSIS. THE HEALTH RESOURCES AND SERVICES ADMINISTRATION (HRSA) DESIGNATIONS OF PRIMARY CARE AND MENTAL HEALTH HPSAS WILL BE ANALYZED TO EVALUATE THE INTERRELATION OF MULTI-LEVEL ASD INFLUENCES FROM A HEALTH EQUITY FRAMEWORK. A MODERATED- MEDIATION MODEL OF ASD CARE COORDINATION WILL BE USED TO TEST FOR SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC INTERACTION EFFECTS (I.E., MODERATION) IN THE DEGREE TO WHICH CARE COORDINATION EXPLAINS THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN ASD COMPLEXITY AND PARENT HEALTH AND STRESS (I.E., MEDIATION). COMPLETION OF THESE AIMS WILL PROVIDE A DIRECT RESPONSE TO FEDERAL INITIATIVES TO STANDARDIZE AND EVALUATE CHILD HEALTHCARE COORDINATION. THE MEDICAID SERVICES INVESTMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY ACT (MSIAA) OF 2019 WILL ALLOW STATES TO OFFER OPTIONAL BENEFITS THAT INCLUDE CARE COORDINATION SERVICES FOR MEDICAID-ELIGIBLE CHILDREN WITH MEDICALLY COMPLEX CONDITIONS BEGINNING IN 2022. SEVERAL FACTORS, INCLUDING LACK OF STANDARD HIGH SCHOOL CYBERSECURITY CURRICULA, AND LACK OF CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS AMONG TEENS, HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO TEENAGERS BECOMING TARGETS OF CYBERCRIMES SUCH AS CYBERBULLYING. THIS RESEARCH AIMS TO LEVERAGE THE INCREASED TECHNOLOGY USE OF TEENS TO (A) DEVELOP A SECURITY MINDSET AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, (B) SPREAD AWARENESS OF THE RISKS AND THREATS ASSOCIATED WITH USE OF SMARTPHONE/TABLETS AND OTHER TECH, AND (C) INCULCATE INTEREST IN CYBERSECURITY CAREERS (WITH A LONG-TERM GOAL OF ADDRESSING THE NATIONAL SHORTAGE OF CYBERSECURITY WORKFORCE). THE PROJECT SEEKS TO ACHIEVE THESE GOALS BY PROVIDING CYBERSECURITY TRAINING THROUGH INTERACTIVE, ANIMATED VISUALIZATIONS SO THAT STUDENTS DEVELOP AN INTEREST IN CYBERSECURITY CAREERS. EDUCATORS WILL HAVE ACCESS TO THE EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS DEVELOPED WHICH MAY LEAD TO THE BETTER ASSESSMENT OF STUDENTS' CYBERSECURITY SKILLS. THIS NEW INTERACTIVE ANIMATED VISUALIZATION FRAMEWORK FOR HIGH SCHOOL CYBERSECURITY EDUCATION HAS THE POTENTIAL FOR WIDER, NATIONWIDE ADOPTION. AS CYBERSECURITY CONTINUES TO BECOME A NATIONAL AND GLOBAL SECURITY THREAT, THIS RESEARCH WILL FACILITATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW GENERATION OF WORKFORCE AND A SAFER CYBER-ENVIRONMENT. THE PROJECT WILL DEVELOP AN INNOVATIVE TEACHING PLAN AND PEDAGOGICAL METHODS FOR HIGH SCHOOL CYBERSECURITY EDUCATION. HOWEVER, THERE IS LIMITED ADOPTION OF TECHNOLOGIES IN ENERGY AND UTILITIES INDUSTRIES (EUIS). THERE IS ALSO A WIDE GAP BETWEEN THE JOBS TO BE FILLED AND THE SKILLED POOL CAPABLE OF FILLING THEM IN EUIS. ADDITIONALLY, THE AGING WORKFORCE IS CREATING A RISK OF LOSING WORKERS WITH HANDS-ON FIELD EXPERTISE. MAINTAINING CONTEMPORARY EQUIPMENT FOR POWER GENERATION, STORAGE, TRANSMISSION, AND DISTRIBUTION IN EUIS IS EXPENSIVE AND ARDUOUS AS THEY ARE MORE VERSATILE AND INHERENTLY COMPLICATED. THEREFORE, CHALLENGES ARISE FOR THEIR EFFICIENT AND PRODUCTIVE MAINTENANCE. THE PROJECT AIMS TO DESIGN A FRAMEWORK THAT WILL MEET THE NEEDS OF SMART TRAINING AND PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE IN EUIS BY EMPLOYING EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES AND DEVELOP A WORKING PROTOTYPE OF THE FRAMEWORK. THE PROJECT INVESTIGATORS COLLABORATE WITH EUIS TO DESIGN THE FRAMEWORK. IN THE LONG-TERM, THE IMPROVED TRAINING WILL REDUCE THE SKILL GAP BETWEEN SKILLED AND LESS-SKILLED WORKERS AND INCREASE SITUATIONAL AWARENESS AND SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE. HIGH-SCHOOLERS ARE AMONG THE MOST FREQUENT USERS OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES. HOWEVER, MANY DO NOT KNOW HOW THESE DEVICES ARE DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURED. TO ADDRESS THE KNOWLEDGE GAPS AND WORKFORCE NEEDS EQUITABLY, THIS PROJECT WILL DEVELOP A SEMICONDUCTOR CURRICULUM WITH HIGH-SCHOOL-AGED STUDENTS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS, AND WITH PARTNERS IN HIGHER EDUCATION, K-12, AND INDUSTRIES, ENHANCED WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) AND OTHER INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES. GAME-BASED SEMICONDUCTOR MODULES WILL BE CREATED FOR STUDENTS TO PLAY AND LEARN WITH PEERS CHOOSING CULTURALLY DIVERSE AVATARS.
