PROMOTING STEM STUDENT SUCCESS AND CAREER ENTRY WITH AN INTEGRATED ACHIEVEMENT AND MENTORING MODEL -THIS PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE NATIONAL NEED FOR WELL-EDUCATED SCIENTISTS, MATHEMATICIANS, ENGINEERS, AND TECHNICIANS BY SUPPORTING THE RETENTION AND GRADUATION OF HIGH-ACHIEVING, LOW-INCOME STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED AT NASSAU COMMUNITY COLLEGE (NCC) AND HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY (HU). NCC IS A PUBLIC COMMUNITY COLLEGE, PART OF THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK, AND HU IS A PRIVATE, NON-SECTARIAN, LIBERAL ARTS INSTITUTION. OVER ITS SIX-YEAR DURATION, THE PROJECT WILL FUND SCHOLARSHIPS TO 90 UNIQUE FULL TIME STUDENTS PURSUING ASSOCIATE?S AND BACHELOR?S DEGREES IN BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, COMPUTER SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS, PSYCHOLOGY, AND GEOLOGY, ENVIRONMENT, AND SUSTAINABILITY. FIRST-YEAR HU SCHOLARS WILL RECEIVE UP TO FOUR YEARS OF SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT. NCC/HU SCHOLARS, SELECTED FROM THE UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES IMMEDIATELY SURROUNDING NCC AND HU, WILL RECEIVE TWO YEARS OF SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT AT NCC AND UP TO TWO ADDITIONAL YEARS OF SUPPORT AT HU. THE PROJECT?S SIGNIFICANCE LIES IN LINKING SCHOLARSHIPS WITH A TRANSFORMATIVE MODEL THAT INTEGRATES EXISTING INSTITUTIONAL RESOURCES WITHIN AN ACHIEVEMENT AND MENTORING CONTEXT. STUDENTS WILL ENGAGE IN ACADEMIC AND CAREER SUCCESS WORKSHOPS, BE MENTORED BY MORE SENIOR PEERS AND SUBSEQUENTLY MENTOR MORE JUNIOR PEERS, ENGAGE IN RESEARCH, AND NETWORK WITH STEM PROFESSIONALS. THE PROJECT WILL FURTHER CATALYZE INTER-INSTITUTIONAL FACULTY COLLABORATION AROUND CURRICULUM DESIGN AND CLASSROOM EXPERIENCES. BECAUSE NCC, HU, AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES HAVE A HIGH POPULATION OF STUDENTS FROM GROUPS UNDERREPRESENTED IN STEM, THIS PROJECT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BROADEN PARTICIPATION IN STEM FIELDS. THE PROJECT WILL INCREASE THE EARNING POWER OF LOW-INCOME STUDENTS, SUPPORTING THEIR UPWARD MOBILITY AND PROVIDING ROLE MODELS FOR SUCCESS IN OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES. THE PROJECT?S IMPACT ON STUDENT OUTCOMES, ORGANIZATION OF INSTITUTIONAL RESOURCES, AND THE ADAPTABILITY AND TRANSFERABILITY OF THE MODEL ACROSS INSTITUTIONAL CONTEXTS WILL BE EXAMINED AND WILL ADD TO THE CURRENT KNOWLEDGE BASE REGARDING LOW-INCOME STUDENTS. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO INCREASE STEM DEGREE COMPLETION OF LOW-INCOME, HIGH-ACHIEVING UNDERGRADUATES WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED. THE SPECIFIC AIMS OF THE PROJECT ARE TO: (1) INCREASE IDENTITY AND CONFIDENCE AS STEM STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONALS, (2) ENSURE CONSISTENT ENGAGEMENT WITH STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES, AND (3) CATALYZE INTER-INSTITUTIONAL PEDAGOGICAL COLLABORATIONS. BUILT ON THE THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK OF LEGITIMATE PERIPHERAL PARTICIPATION WITH AN EMPHASIS ON INCLUSIVITY, COMMUNITY, AND BELONGING, THE PROJECT DIRECTLY ADDRESSES CHALLENGES TO STEM CAREER ENTRY FACED BY LOW-INCOME STUDENTS. BASED ON THE IMPORTANCE OF INITIAL MATH COURSE PLACEMENT, EARLY AND CONTINUOUS ENGAGEMENT WITH STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES, ACCESS TO THE UNSPOKEN RULES AND NORMS ASSOCIATED WITH COLLEGIATE ACADEMIC SUCCESS, AND THE ROLE OF MENTORING IN STUDENT SUCCESS, THE PROJECT?S ACTIVITIES WILL BE ARRANGED TO ADDRESS EACH CHALLENGE. THE PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS OF ACTIVITIES BOTH INDIVIDUALLY AND COLLECTIVELY ON STUDENT ACADEMIC AND CAREER OUTCOMES, EXPLORE FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO STUDENT SUCCESS AND CAREER ENTRY, IDENTIFY INSTITUTIONAL STRUCTURES REQUIRED FOR SUSTAINED INTER-INSTITUTION PEDAGOGICAL COLLABORATION, AND ASSESS THE ADAPTABILITY, TRANSFERABILITY, AND INSTITUTIONALIZATION OF THE INTEGRATED ACHIEVEMENT AND MENTORING MODEL ACROSS INSTITUTIONAL CONTEXTS. THE PROJECT WILL BE EVALUATED USING A MIXED METHODS APPROACH USING FOCUS GROUPS, INTERVIEWS, SURVEYS, SOCIAL NETWORK ANALYSIS, AND ARTIFACTS GENERATED BY STUDENTS AND FACULTY AS THEY PARTICIPATE IN PROJECT ACTIVITIES. RESULTS OF THIS PROJECT WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE VIA WORKSHOPS AT NATIONAL MEETINGS, PEER-REVIEWED PAPERS TARGETING AN INTERDISCIPLINARY AUDIENCE, AND A WEBSITE WITH RESOURCES, MODULES, AND RUBRICS FOR INSTITUTIONS TO USE TO ACHIEVE SIMILAR GOALS. THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY NSF?S SCHOLARSHIPS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS PROGRAM, WHICH SEEKS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF LOW-INCOME ACADEMICALLY TALENTED STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED WHO EARN DEGREES IN STEM FIELDS. IT ALSO AIMS TO IMPROVE THE EDUCATION OF FUTURE STEM WORKERS, AND TO GENERATE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ACADEMIC SUCCESS, RETENTION, TRANSFER, GRADUATION, AND ACADEMIC/CAREER PATHWAYS OF LOW-INCOME STUDENTS. TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING (T&E) TEACHERS HAVE GENERALLY NOT BEEN PREPARED TO TEACH COMPUTER SCIENCE (CS), YET THEY TEACH IN VIRTUALLY EVERY ONE OF THE NATION?S SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND SERVE ALL STUDENT POPULATIONS. EXCITE I CONDUCTED A TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (PD) PILOT PROGRAM WITH TEAMS OF TEACHERS IN MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. EXCITE II WILL OFFER A FULL SPECTRUM OF PD WORKSHOPS FOR T&E TEACHERS AND EDUCATION LEADERS WHO SERVE DIVERSE STUDENTS IN NINE STATES (GEORGIA, NORTH CAROLINA, PENNSYLVANIA, DELAWARE, LOUISIANA, MISSOURI, NORTH DAKOTA, NEW JERSEY, AND MINNESOTA) AS A PROTOTYPE FOR ENABLING T&E TEACHERS NATIONWIDE TO PROVIDE PEDAGOGICALLY SOUND ADVANCED PLACEMENT COMPUTER SCIENCE PRINCIPLES (AP CSP) INSTRUCTION. THE PROJECT WILL TARGET DISTRICTS AND SCHOOLS WITH LARGE OR MAJORITY POPULATIONS OF BLACK AND HISPANIC STUDENTS. THE PROJECT HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO USE CULTURALLY RELEVANT PEDAGOGY TO MEET THE NEEDS OF UNDERREPRESENTED POPULATIONS AND FORM THE BACKBONE OF THE PROJECT?S PD EFFORTS, THAT WILL LEAD TO ON THE CREATION OF AN EQUITABLE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT. THE MISSION OF EXCITE II IS TO IMPLEMENT A REPLICABLE MODEL TO EXPAND CS PARTICIPATION BY PROVIDING PEDAGOGICALLY SOUND AP CSP INSTRUCTION FOR T&E STUDENTS NATIONWIDE. NINE STATE RPPS WILL BE CREATED THAT WILL DEMONSTRATE THE POTENTIAL FOR SCALABLE IMPLEMENTATION OF A RECRUITMENT AND PD PROGRAM FOR T&E HS TEACHERS NATIONALLY. THE PROJECT WILL USE HANDS-ON COMPUTER-CONTROL ENGINEERING DESIGN CHALLENGES TO STIMULATE HIGH STUDENT ENGAGEMENT WHEN LEARNING ABOUT COMPUTER SCIENCE PRINCIPLES. THE RPP FRAMEWORK WILL ENABLE PRACTITIONERS TO USE POWERFUL ANALYTICAL TOOLS SUCH AS THE STRATEGIC CSFORALL RESOURCE & IMPLEMENTATION PLANNING TOOL (SCRIPT) PROCESS TO RECRUIT STUDENTS FROM GROUPS UNDERREPRESENTED IN CS AND ENSURE COMMON OUTCOMES IN EACH OF THE STATE RPPS. THE PROJECT WILL COORDINATE ITS STATE-LEVEL EFFORTS WITH THAT OF THE EXPANDING COMPUTER EDUCATION PATHWAYS ALLIANCE (ECEP). THE PROJECT WILL INTENTIONALLY FOCUS ON BLACK AND HISPANIC STUDENT POPULATIONS AS IT AIMS TO OFFER CS INSTRUCTION TO THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS IN GEOGRAPHICALLY, ECONOMICALLY, ETHNICALLY, AND RACIALLY DIVERSE SCHOOL DISTRICTS. THE USE OF AN ON-RAMPING EVOLUTIONARY PROCESS ENSURES THAT AFTER TWO YEARS OF PROJECT SUPPORT, EVERY PROJECT STATE WOULD DEVELOP AN IN-STATE SUPPORT AND IMPLEMENTATION TEAM TO CONTINUE THE RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING OF T&E TEACHERS INTO THE FUTURE. THE INTERNATIONAL TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION WILL SUSTAIN THE WORK OF THE PROJECT AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF THE NSF FUNDING CYCLE WITH WAIT-LISTED STATES, AND 20 ADDITIONAL STATES RECRUITED AS A RESULT OF A NATIONAL DISSEMINATION WORKSHOP. THE PROJECT WILL RESEARCH AND EVALUATE THE IMPACT OF THE PD, THE COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE ONGOING SUPPORT SYSTEM, AND THE COMPUTER CONTROL AND ROBOTIC ACTIVITIES ON CS TEACHING AND LEARNING, ON THE RECRUITMENT, MOTIVATION, AND RETENTION OF BLACK AND HISPANIC STUDENTS, AND ON THE ENGAGEMENT AND IDENTITIES OF T&E TEACHERS. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.

THERE IS PRESENTLY A SEVERE SHORTAGE OF CS TEACHERS THAT WILL BE EXACERBATED AS MORE SCHOOLS EMBRACE CS EDUCATION. TO HELP MITIGATE THE TEACHER SHORTAGE, THIS PROJECT WILL IMPLEMENT A MODEL TO PREPARE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING (T&E) TEACHERS IN DIVERSE NEW YORK STATE COMMUNITIES TO TEACH CS COURSES. THE IMPLEMENTATION MODEL IS TRANSFERABLE NATIONALLY AND THIS POPULATION OF TEACHERS CAN ADD SIGNIFICANTLY TO THE CS DELIVERY SYSTEM. FOUR COMPLEMENTARY AND UNIFYING PROJECT COMPONENTS COMPRISE A SYSTEMS APPROACH TO BROADENING CS EDUCATION CAPACITY AND PARTICIPATION. THEY ARE: COMPONENT 1, IMPLEMENTING A STATEWIDE SECONDARY SCHOOL ENGINEERING DESIGN-BASED CS CURRICULAR CONTINUUM FOR T&E EDUCATION WITH AN ALIGNED TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (PD) PROGRAM; COMPONENT 2, RECRUITING, ENGAGING, AND RETAINING DIVERSE STUDENTS BY SITUATING LEARNING IN THE CONTEXT OF AUTHENTIC, CULTURALLY RELEVANT ENGINEERING DESIGN CHALLENGES; COMPONENT 3, ESTABLISHING A PATHWAY TO DUAL T&E/CS STATE CERTIFICATION FOR TEACHERS; AND COMPONENT 4, FOSTERING FAMILY ENGAGEMENT IN CS EDUCATION. THE CURRICULUM AND PD PROGRAMS INTEGRATE CULTURALLY RELEVANT PEDAGOGY TO ADDRESS BARRIERS TO BROADENING PARTICIPATION AND PERSISTENCE IN STEM. THE DUAL CERTIFICATION AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT IN CS COMPONENTS ARE UNIQUE AND INNOVATIVE ELEMENTS THAT CAN BE ADOPTED BY MYRIAD STEM PRESERVICE AND SCHOOL-BASED PROGRAMS. THE PROTOTYPICAL MODEL IS SITUATED IN TWELVE MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOMS IN RURAL, SUBURBAN, AND URBAN SCHOOL DISTRICTS WHICH REFLECT NEW YORK STATE?S DIVERSE POPULATION. THE PROJECT TEAM WILL COLLECT QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE DATA FROM 12 T&E TEACHERS AND APPROXIMATELY 300 STUDENTS THROUGH PARTICIPANT INTERVIEWS, SURVEYS OF TEACHERS AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPERS, OBSERVATIONS, PD INSTITUTE FEEDBACK, RESULTS OF PILOT TESTING THE CURRICULUM INCLUDING STUDENT PERFORMANCE DATA, STUDENT SURVEYS, AND TEACHER AND FAMILY MEMBER REFLECTIONS. USING MIXED METHODS, THE TEAM WILL EMPIRICALLY AND DESCRIPTIVELY INVESTIGATE HOW THE VARIOUS COMPONENTS SYNERGISTICALLY SERVE AS DIRECT OR MEDIATOR VARIABLES FOR TARGET OUTCOMES. DELIVERABLES INCLUDE A SECONDARY SCHOOL CONTINUUM OF INSTRUCTION USING AUTHENTIC ENGINEERING DESIGN CHALLENGES THAT INTEGRATE T&E AND CS STANDARDS; PD MATERIALS TO TRAIN EDUCATORS TO DELIVER THE INTEGRATED CONTENT EFFECTIVELY; ASSESSMENTS TO MEASURE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES AND TEACHER GROWTH; A CERTIFICATION PATHWAY TO DUAL T&E AND CS STATE CERTIFICATION FOR TEACHERS AND ACCOMPANYING TRAINING MATERIALS; RESOURCES TO EMPOWER FAMILIES TO SUPPORT THEIR CHILDREN?S CS LEARNING; AND RESEARCH FINDINGS AND INSIGHTS FROM ONGOING PROGRAM EVALUATIONS AND ASSESSMENTS. EXPANDING THE CS DELIVERY SYSTEM THROUGH T&E IN NEW YORK IS A MODEL FOR HOW T&E TEACHERS NATIONWIDE CAN BROADEN CS PARTICIPATION. THIS PROJECT IS POSITIONED TO CONTRIBUTE VALUABLE KNOWLEDGE, RESOURCES, AND MODELS THAT HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO SHAPE THE LANDSCAPE OF CS EDUCATION, TEACHER PREPARATION, AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT AT BOTH STATE AND NATIONAL LEVELS. THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY THE INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY EXPERIENCES FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS (ITEST) PROGRAM, WHICH SUPPORTS PROJECTS THAT BUILD UNDERSTANDINGS OF PRACTICES, PROGRAM ELEMENTS, CONTEXTS AND PROCESSES CONTRIBUTING TO INCREASING STUDENTS' KNOWLEDGE AND INTEREST IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) AND INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) CAREERS. ALL OF THE MAJOR USERS WHO CONDUCT RESEARCH ON THE HPC CLUSTER WILL LEVERAGE ITS CAPABILITIES TO ADDRESS LONG-STANDING QUESTIONS IN THEIR FIELDS TO ADVANCE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPLORE CREATIVE, POTENTIALLY TRANSFORMATIVE CONCEPTS WITH THIS CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY. THE UTILITY OF A HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING CLUSTER TO THE SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS FIELDS IS CRITICAL AND WILL SUPPORT THE RESEARCH AND TEACHING OF MORE THAN TWENTY MAJOR USERS OF THE EQUIPMENT, BEING AN INTERDISCIPLINARY AND COLLABORATIVE GROUP OF FACULTY SPREAD ACROSS SIX DEPARTMENTS AT HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY, ADELPHI UNIVERSITY, AND NASSAU COMMUNITY COLLEGE. THE IMPACT OF AN ON-SITE HPC CLUSTER FOR RESEARCH IS EXEMPLIFIED BY SOME OF THE MAIN AREAS OF RESEARCH TO BE ADDRESSED, INCLUDING 1) REVEALING THE STRUCTURAL IMPACT OF ELECTRON SOLVATION ON MOLECULES, 2) MODELING ACCEPTOR-ACCEPTOR INTERACTIONS IN P-DOPED SEMICONDUCTORS IN SUPPORT OF ACCEPTOR-SPIN-BASED QUANTUM COMPUTATION, 3) ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK AND ACCELERATOR CO-DESIGN USING EVOLUTIONARY ALGORITHMS, AND 4) AUTONOMOUS WOUND CLOSURE EMPLOYING ADVANCED MAGNETIC TECHNOLOGY IN THE FORM OF ?PRINTABLE? MAGNETS. FROM BIOLOGY, PHYSICS, AND CHEMISTRY TO COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING, THE MULTIDISCIPLINARY UTILITY OF A HPC CLUSTER IS VITAL TO CONTINUED EXPLORATION AND ADVANCEMENT. EACH MAJOR USER OF THE HPC CLUSTER WILL INVOLVE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN COMPUTER LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS, AND LABORATORY CLASSES WILL BE ABLE TO MODEL AND SIMULATE SYSTEMS THAT WERE IMPOSSIBLE PREVIOUSLY. THE OUTREACH OF THE HPC CLUSTER WILL ALSO INCLUDE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT RESEARCH AND TEACHING EXPERIENCES THROUGH THE HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY SUMMER SCIENCE RESEARCH PROGRAM. SOME OF THE PROJECTS CONDUCTED BY THE MAJOR USERS WILL BE CONVERTED INTO COURSE-BASED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCES. TISSUE ENGINEERING PLANT-BASED VASCULAR GRAFTS - ABSTRACT CORONARY HEART DISEASE AND PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE AFFECTS MILLIONS OF AMERICANS EACH YEAR, AND IS OFTEN TREATED WITH BYPASS SURGERY TO REROUTE THE BLOOD SUPPLY AROUND A BLOCKED ARTERY. HOWEVER, PATIENTS DO NOT ALWAYS HAVE A SAPHENOUS VEIN SUITABLE FOR AN ARTERIAL BYPASS GRAFT. THE STRUCTURAL SIMILARITIES BETWEEN ANIMALS AND PLANTS INSPIRED A MORE RECENT STRATEGY OF DECELLULARIZING PLANTS IN ORDER TO GENERATE PERFUSABLE SCAFFOLDS. UNLIKE ANIMAL TISSUE, PLANTS ARE PRIMARILY COMPOSED OF CELLULOSE WHICH CAN OFFER A PROMISING, NONTHROMBOGENIC ALTERNATIVE CAPABLE OF PROMOTING CELL ATTACHMENT AND REDIRECTING BLOOD FLOW. THE IMMEDIATE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO SUCCEED IN TISSUE ENGINEERING AND TESTING A PATENT, NONTHROMBOGENIC VESSEL FOR ENGRAFTMENT THAT MIMICS THE MECHANICAL AND STRUCTURAL PROPERTIES OF NATIVE VESSELS. WE HYPOTHESIZE THAT THE MECHANICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL MICROENVIRONMENT PROVIDED BY THE DECELLULARIZED PLANT LEAVES WILL PROMOTE INITIAL ENDOTHELIAL CELL AND VASCULAR SMOOTH MUSCLE CELL ADHESION, MAINTAIN VESSEL PATENCY, AND THAT THE ADDITION OF FLUID SHEAR STRESS PRECONDITIONING WILL PROMOTE LONG-TERM ENDOTHELIALIZATION OF THE SCAFFOLD AND MINIMIZE EARLY GRAFT OCCLUSIONS IN VIVO. BASED ON OUR PRELIMINARY PRESSURE TESTS AND CELL ADHESION ASSAYS SHOWING THAT DECELLULARIZED PLANT LEAVES MAINTAIN THEIR MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND PROMOTE ENDOTHELIAL CELL ADHESION, WE BELIEVE THIS WORK WILL PROVIDE A USEFUL METHOD OF DECELLULARIZING PLANTS AND PRE-CONDITIONING OF CELLS INTO A NATURAL SCAFFOLD CAPABLE OF SUCCESSFUL ENGRAFTMENT. THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL ALSO ENHANCE THE RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT AT HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY BY ALLOWING UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TO PLAN, EXECUTE AND PERFORM ANALYSIS OF AUTHENTIC HANDS-ON RESEARCH. THIS WOULD ALLOW THEM TO ACQUIRE A BROAD RANGE OF SKILLS IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING THAT THEY WOULD OTHERWISE NOT HAVE ACCESS TO AND IS EXPECTED TO HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THEIR FUTURE STUDIES AND CAREER CHOICES.

BRC-BIO: STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONING OF MICROBIAL PLANKTON UNDER COASTAL HYPOXIA -PERIODIC COASTAL HYPOXIA (LOW DISSOLVED OXYGEN IN THE WATER AND SEDIMENTS) HAS MAJOR ECOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES, INCLUDING SOME NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON MARINE FAUNA AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES. WORLDWIDE, COASTAL HYPOXIA IS CAUSED BY BOTH NATURAL AND HUMAN HUMAN-INDUCED ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE. HIGHER SUMMER TEMPERATURES AND INCREASED INPUTS OF NITROGEN POLLUTANTS EXACERBATE MICROBIAL PROCESSES THAT CONSUME DISSOLVED OXYGEN, INCREASING THE FREQUENCY AND SEVERITY OF HYPOXIA EVENTS. BIOTIC AND ABIOTIC INTERACTIONS WITHIN THESE MICROBIAL COMMUNITIES ARE RARELY STUDIED SIMULTANEOUSLY, WHICH LIMITS OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE FEEDBACKS BETWEEN MICROBIAL PROCESSES AND HYPOXIA. THIS PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE THE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG A BROAD SPECTRUM OF PLANKTONIC MICROORGANISMS (BACTERIA, ARCHAEA, PROTISTS AND MICROSCOPIC ANIMALS) AND ABIOTIC VARIABLES (E.G., TEMPERATURE, OXYGEN, N COMPOUNDS) IN THE WATERS OF AN ESTUARINE EMBAYMENT IN LONG ISLAND SOUND, NY, THAT SUFFERS HYPOXIA EVERY SUMMER. THE PROJECT WILL QUANTIFY COMMUNITIES, METABOLISM, AND PREDATOR-PREY INTERACTION ACROSS THE MICROBIAL COMMUNITY. RESULTS WILL INFORM SCIENTISTS, ENVIRONMENTAL PARTNERS, AND THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE ROOT CAUSES OF HYPOXIA, AT A TIME WHEN COASTAL HYPOXIA IS INCREASING. THE PROJECT HAS A STRONG EDUCATIONAL COMPONENT, INCLUDING RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR HIGH-SCHOOL AND UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS. THE STUDENTS WILL BE TRAINED IN MICROSCOPY, DNA SEQUENCING, AND BIOINFORMATICS. TRAINING ACTIVITIES WILL INCREASE PARTICIPATION OF UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITIES AND WILL FOCUS ON MARKETABLE SKILLS THAT EMPOWER AND HELP RETAIN INDIVIDUALS IN HIGHER EDUCATION AND STEM JOBS. THE OVERARCHING GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO LAUNCH A MULTI-ANNUAL RESEARCH PROGRAM INVESTIGATING INTERACTIONS BETWEEN MICROBIAL PLANKTON AND DEOXYGENATION IN HUMAN-IMPACTED COASTAL WATERS. THE PROJECT WILL FILL A KEY KNOWLEDGE GAP BY SIMULTANEOUSLY EXAMINING COMMUNITIES OF BACTERIA, ARCHAEA, AND MICROBIAL EUKARYOTES. MICROBIAL PROCESSES LEAD TO, AND ARE INFLUENCED BY, COASTAL HYPOXIA. THIS PROJECT WILL USE THE SUMMER PROGRESSION OF DEOXYGENATION IN A EUTROPHIC ESTUARINE EMBAYMENT AS A ?NATURAL LABORATORY? TO QUANTIFY CHANGES IN MICROBIAL COMMUNITY STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONING IN HYPOXIA VERSUS NORMOXIA. METHODS WILL COMBINE FIELD WORK, CELL COUNTS (MICROSCOPY, FLOW CYTOMETRY), DNA SEQUENCING (METABARCODING, SHOTGUN METAGENOMICS) AND EXPERIMENTAL QUANTIFICATIONS OF BACTERIOPLANKTON AND PHYTOPLANKTON CONSUMPTION BY MICROEUKARYOTES. ENVIRONMENTAL DATA, MICROBIAL ABUNDANCES, TAXONOMIC AND FUNCTIONAL GENETIC PROFILES, AND PREY CONSUMPTION RATES WILL BE USED TO TEST HYPOTHESES ON CHANGES IN FEEDING INTERACTIONS AND METABOLIC POTENTIAL AS SUMMER PROGRESSES. RESULTS WILL IMPROVE THE UNDERSTANDING OF MICROBIAL EFFECTS ON (AND RESPONSES TO) HYPOXIA, AND WILL HELP PREDICTING TROPHIC AND BIOGEOCHEMICAL SHIFTS UNDER CURRENT AND FUTURE DISSOLVED OXYGEN LEVELS IN COASTAL WATERS. BRC-BIO: EPIGENETIC REGULATION OF TRANSPOSABLE ELEMENTS IN MAIZE -ONE SURPRISING DISCOVERY OF THE GENOMICS ERA IS THAT EUKARYOTIC GENOMES, PARTICULARLY PLANT GENOMES, OFTEN CONSIST LARGELY OF TRANSPOSABLE ELEMENTS (TES). THESE ELEMENTS REPLICATE AND INTEGRATE INTO VARIOUS GENOMIC SITES, CAUSING GENETIC MUTATIONS AND SIGNIFICANT CHROMOSOMAL ALTERATIONS. UNDERSTANDING THE MECHANISM OF SILENCING, WHICH IS INITIATED AND THEN MAINTAINED THROUGH GENERATIONS, IS IMPORTANT TO GRASP THE DYNAMIC INTERPLAY BETWEEN TE SILENCING AND TRANSPOSITIONS THAT SHAPES GENOME STRUCTURE AND INFLUENCES GENE REGULATION. HOWEVER, STUDYING THE SILENCING INITIATION IS CHALLENGING DUE TO THE LIMITED NOVEL OCCURRENCE BEYOND ANCIENT EVENTS. THIS STUDY PROPOSES UTILIZING TWO NATURALLY OCCURRING SILENCERS (KILLER ALLELES) EXCLUSIVE TO MAIZE, WHICH CAN ACTIVELY INITIATE TE SILENCING THROUGH SIMPLE CROSSES INSTEAD OF USING TRANSGENIC CONSTRUCTS. THE RESEARCH AIMS TO INVESTIGATE THE INITIATION AND CONSEQUENCES OF EPIGENETIC TE SILENCING IN MAIZE, WITH A FOCUS ON THE SOPHISTICATED REGULATED MECHANISMS RESPONDING TO DEVELOPMENTAL CUES. MOREOVER, THE PROPOSAL PRIORITIZES STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, DIVERSITY SUPPORT, AND EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH. BY FOSTERING COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTIONS (PUIS) AND RESEARCH-INTENSIVE (R1) UNIVERSITIES, IT SEEKS TO ENHANCE THE PI'S RESEARCH PRODUCTIVITY WHILE ADDRESSING CHALLENGES FACED BY STUDENTS IN UNDER-RESOURCED ENVIRONMENTS. INCORPORATING A COLLABORATIVE UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE (CURE) COMPONENT ENABLES MORE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FROM PUIS TO ENGAGE IN AUTHENTIC RESEARCH. ADDITIONALLY, A SUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM TAILORED FOR UNDERSERVED STUDENTS IS PROPOSED, AIMING TO OVERCOME BARRIERS ARISING FROM THEIR LACK OF RESEARCH ACCESS AND LIMITED CONNECTIONS WITH THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY, THEREBY PROMOTING THEIR SUCCESS IN STEM FIELDS. THIS RESEARCH AIMS TO GAIN VALUABLE INSIGHTS INTO THE INTRICATE INTERPLAY BETWEEN EPIGENETIC MECHANISMS AND TRANSPOSON SILENCING DURING PLANT DEVELOPMENT. SPECIFIC GOALS INCLUDE: 1) STUDYING THE RNA-DIRECTED DNA METHYLATION (RDDM) INDUCED BY MAIZE KILLER ALLELES. PRELIMINARY DATA INDICATE THAT ACKILLER-DERIVED SMALL RNAS UTILIZE RDDM TO SILENCE ACTIVE AC TRANSPOSONS, PROVIDING THE FIRST EVIDENCE OF AC SILENCING THROUGH THIS PATHWAY. THE STUDY PROPOSES TO EXAMINE THE GENOME-WIDE EFFECTS ON DS FROM THE ACK-SMALL RNAS TO GAIN A COMPREHENSIVE UNDERSTANDING OF SMALL RNA TARGETING, INITIATION, AND MAINTENANCE DURING TE SILENCING, AND OBTAIN INSIGHTS INTO THE ANCIENT SILENCING EVENTS ON DS DURING GENOME EVOLUTION. 2) INVESTIGATING THE REGULATION OF THE SILENCING MECHANISMS BASED ON THE PRELIMINARY DATA THAT KILLER- SMALL RNAS INDUCED RDDM IS TIGHTLY REGULATED BY DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES. THIS REGULATION MAY INVOLVE ALTERNATING AMONG DIFFERENT SILENCING MECHANISMS INCLUDING RDDM, HISTONE MODIFICATION, AND TRANSLATION INHIBITION. BY STUDYING THE ABILITY OF THE SAME SMALL RNAS TO ACTIVATE DISTINCT SILENCING PATHWAYS IN DIFFERENT TISSUES, THIS RESEARCH PROVIDES A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE THE DYNAMIC REGULATION OF TE SILENCING IN RESPONSE TO DEVELOPMENTAL CUES. RUI: RELATIONSHIP CRAFTING AFTER WORKPLACE OSTRACISM IN RACIAL MINORITY EMPLOYEES: THE ROLE OF AUTONOMIC AROUSAL, EMOTIONS, AND COGNITIVE ATTRIBUTIONS -PROMOTING WORKPLACE INCLUSION AND ATTAINING EMPLOYEE WELL-BEING ARE IMPORTANT FOR BUSINESS ORGANIZATIONS. WORKPLACE OSTRACISM OCCURS WHEN AN ORGANIZATIONAL MEMBER IS EXCLUDED OR IGNORED BY OTHER PEOPLE AT WORK. ALMOST 70% OF AMERICAN EMPLOYEES HAVE EXPERIENCED WORKPLACE OSTRACISM. THE SITUATION IS WORSE AMONG EMPLOYEES WITH A RACIAL MINORITY BACKGROUND, POSING A TREMENDOUS CHALLENGE FOR ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERS WHO STRIVE TO PROMOTE AN INCLUSIVE WORKPLACE IN AN INCREASINGLY DIVERSE ENVIRONMENT. THIS PROJECT INVESTIGATES HOW EMPLOYEES RESPOND EMOTIONALLY AND PHYSIOLOGICALLY TO WORKPLACE OSTRACISM AND THE EXTENT TO WHICH THEIR RACIAL BACKGROUND AND COGNITIVE ATTRIBUTION AFFECT THIS PROCESS. FURTHERMORE, THE RESEARCHERS DETERMINE THE BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF RELATIONSHIP CRAFTING, A PROACTIVE SOCIAL BEHAVIOR THAT HELPS OSTRACIZED EMPLOYEES TO REGAIN SOCIAL CONNECTIONS, RECOVER WELLBEING, AND RESTORE PERFORMANCE. FINDINGS OF THIS PROJECT HAVE IMPORTANT IMPLICATIONS FOR POLICY AND PRACTICE TO IMPROVE DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN THE WORKPLACE. USING A MULTI-METHOD APPROACH, THIS PROJECT CONDUCTS THREE STUDIES. FIRST, USING A VIGNETTE-BASED EXPERIMENTAL STUDY, THE INVESTIGATORS EXAMINE THE MAIN AND INTERACTION EFFECTS OF WORKPLACE OSTRACISM AND COGNITIVE ATTRIBUTIONS ON THE VICTIMS? EMOTIONAL STRAINS. SECOND, EMPLOYING A BATTERY OF LABORATORY TASKS (CYBERBALL GAME, GIFT CARD TASK, AND TRIER SOCIAL STRESS TEST) AND PHYSIOLOGICAL MEASURES (SKIN CONDUCTANCE LEVEL AND HEART RATE VARIABILITY), THE INVESTIGATORS EXAMINE THE DISTINCT ACTIVITIES OF SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM AND PARASYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM AND THE FUNCTION OF RELATIONSHIP CRAFTING AMONG OSTRACIZED INDIVIDUALS. THIRD, USING THE EXPERIENCE SAMPLING METHOD TO COLLECT MULTI-SOURCE DATA IN A 10-WEEK PERIOD, THE INVESTIGATORS EXAMINE THE FLUCTUATIONS OF WORKPLACE OSTRACISM AND EMPLOYEE RESPONSES THAT ARE OTHERWISE MISSED BY A BETWEEN-SUBJECT DESIGN. DATA IS ANALYZED USING MULTILEVEL MODELING, MONTE CARLO BASED CONFIDENCE INTERVALS, AND MULTIPLE-GROUP PATH ANALYSIS. T32 MEDICAL SCIENTIST TRAINING PROGRAM (MSTP) AT THE ZUCKER SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AT HOFSTRA/NORTHWELL - ABSTRACT THERE IS A RECOGNIZED NEED FOR AN INCREASED NUMBER OF TRAINEES TO ENTER THE PHYSICIAN SCIENTIST WORKFORCE. TO ADDRESS THIS NEED, WE DEVELOPED A PHYSICIAN SCIENTIST TRAINING PROGRAM THAT MATRICULATED THE FIRST CLASS IN 2011 AND IS NOW MATURE WITH A TRACK RECORD OF SUCCESSFUL GRADUATION OF TRAINEES INTO RESEARCH RESIDENCIES AND OTHER TRAINING PROGRAMS THAT ARE DESIGNED TO INCREASE THEIR SKILLS AS PHYSICIAN SCIENTISTS. SEVENTY PERCENT OF OUR TRAINEES GRADUATE IN 7 YEARS. OUR MISSION IS TO TRAIN RIGOROUS, CREATIVE, AND ETHICAL PHYSICIAN SCIENTISTS BY PROVIDING AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM THAT INTEGRATES MD AND PHD TRAINING AND FOCUSES ON EXAMINING THE SCIENTIFIC BASIS OF MEDICAL PRACTICE TO IDENTIFY UNMET NEEDS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVING HUMAN HEALTH. WE HAVE DEVELOPED A CURRICULUM THAT HAS NUMEROUS MD-PHD SPECIFIC COURSES AND HAS A HEAVY EMPHASIS ON RIGOR AND REPRODUCIBILITY AND RESPONSIBLE CONDUCT OF RESEARCH INCLUDING LABORATORY SAFETY. WE HAVE AN EXTENSIVE SERIES ON CAREER OPPORTUNITIES SO THAT TRAINEES ARE AWARE OF THE MANY PROFESSIONAL NICHES THAT PROFIT FROM THE EXPERTISE OF TRAINED PHYSICIAN SCIENTISTS. CHARACTERIZING DECISION-MAKING IN ANOREXIA NERVOSA UNDER CONDITIONS OF RISK AND AMBIGUITY USING COMPUTATIONAL NEUROIMAGING - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT ANOREXIA NERVOSA (AN) IS THE DEADLIEST OF ALL MENTAL ILLNESSES AND IS ASSOCIATED WITH SIGNIFICANT MEDICAL CONSEQUENCES AND FUNCTIONAL IMPAIRMENT. DESPITE SIGNIFICANT RESEARCH EFFORTS, THE ETIOLOGY OF THE DISORDER REMAINS UNKNOWN, AND OUTCOMES FROM EXISTING PSYCHOLOGICAL TREATMENTS REMAIN SUBOPTIMAL. SOME PRIOR WORK IN AN HAS SUGGESTED ALTERATIONS IN DECISION-MAKING, SENSITIVITY TO RISK, AND ALTERED ACTIVITY IN FRONTOSTRIATAL CIRCUITS MAY BE INVOLVED IN THE MAINTENANCE OF THE DISORDER. HOWEVER, THIS WORK HAS BEEN MIXED IN ITS FINDINGS, LIKELY SECONDARY TO LIMITED CONSIDERATION OF SUBCOMPONENTS OF DECISION-MAKING AND/OR RELEVANT CONTEXTUAL INFLUENCES ON THIS PROCESS. DRAWING FROM WORK IN BEHAVIORAL ECONOMICS AND COMPUTATIONAL NEUROSCIENCE, ALONGSIDE CLINICAL EVIDENCE THAT MANY OUTCOMES RELATED TO FOOD AND WEIGHT ARE UNCERTAIN/AMBIGUOUS, WE PROPOSE THAT THE DECISION- MAKING PROFILE OF INDIVIDUALS WITH AN MAY BE BETTER CHARACTERIZED BY AMBIGUITY AVERSION, SUCH THAT A SENSITIVITY TOWARD AMBIGUOUS OUTCOMES INTERRUPTS SUCCESSFUL VALUE-BASED DECISION-MAKING AND RESULTS IN MAINTENANCE OF DIETARY RESTRAINT DESPITE SIGNIFICANT FUNCTIONAL AND PERSONAL COST. TO TEST THIS HYPOTHESIS, WE WILL GATHER BEHAVIORAL CHOICE AND NEURAL DATA FROM FEMALES WITH AN, RESTRICTING TYPE (N=65, AGES 16-22) AND HEALTHY CONTROL (HC) SUBJECTS (N=65) WHILE COMPLETING A WELL-VALIDATED DECISION-MAKING TASK THAT ALLOWS SEPARATION OF RISKY AND AMBIGUOUS DECISIONS. ADDITIONALLY, THE AN GROUP WILL PROVIDE MEASURES OF SYMPTOMS AT BASELINE AND 6-MONTH FOLLOW-UP TO EXPLORE HOW PERFORMANCE ON THE TASK RELATES TO THE PERSISTENCE OF SYMPTOMS. WE HYPOTHESIZE THAT THE AN GROUP WILL DEMONSTRATE INCREASED AMBIGUITY AVERSION COMPARED TO HC AND CHOICE BEHAVIOR INCONSISTENT WITH PREVAILING MODELS OF VALUE-BASED DECISION-MAKING (AIM 1). ON THE NEURAL LEVEL, WE EXPECT THAT, COMPARED TO HC, INDIVIDUALS WITH AN WILL DEMONSTRATE DIFFERENTIAL ACTIVATION IN FRONTOSTRIATAL REGIONS DURING AMBIGUOUS TRIALS, RATHER THAN RISK (AIM 2). LASTLY, WE EXPECT THAT NEURAL AND BEHAVIORAL PARAMETERS GAUGING AMBIGUITY AVERSION WILL RELATE TO BMI, DIETARY RESTRICTION, AND COGNITIVE SYMPTOMS OF AN BOTH CROSS-SECTIONALLY AND OVER TIME, SUCH THAT INDIVIDUALS DEMONSTRATING GREATER AVERSION TO AMBIGUOUS DECISIONS WILL HAVE LOWER BODY WEIGHTS AND GREATER ENGAGEMENT IN SYMPTOMS, SUPPORTING OUR HYPOTHESIZED MAINTENANCE MECHANISM (AIM 3). OVERALL, THE CURRENT PROJECT WILL PROVIDE AN IMPORTANT NEXT STEP TOWARD A MORE PRECISE CHARACTERIZATION OF THE COGNITIVE PROFILE OF INDIVIDUALS WITH AN. CSR: SMALL: RUI: OCTOPUS OS: A HIGH-PERFORMANCE CLOUD OS WITH ACCURATE RESOURCE ABSTRACTION. -THIS PROJECT AIMS TO DEVELOP A HIGH-PERFORMANCE CLOUD OPERATING SYSTEM (OS), CALLED OCTOPUS OS, THAT CAN ADAPT TO THE DYNAMIC CLOUD ENVIRONMENT. INSTEAD OF RUNNING ON A PHYSICAL MACHINE, THE OS NOW IS OFTEN RUNNING IN A VIRTUAL MACHINE (VM) IN THE MODERN CLOUD WHERE THE RESOURCES ARE HIGHLY DYNAMIC DUE TO RESOURCE SHARING AND VM MIGRATION. HOWEVER, THE TRADITIONAL OS CANNOT MANAGE THE VIRTUALIZED RESOURCES EFFICIENTLY DUE TO BEING UNAWARE OF THE RESOURCE DYNAMICS, LEADING TO LOW RESOURCE UTILIZATION AND POOR APPLICATION PERFORMANCE IN THE CLOUD. THEREFORE, THE PROPOSED OCTOPUS OS WOULD CREATE AND MANAGE THE ACCURATE ABSTRACTIONS OF THE DYNAMIC RESOURCES, AND DEVELOP NEW ALGORITHMS TO FULLY LEVERAGE THE UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VIRTUALIZED RESOURCE, WHICH WOULD GREATLY IMPROVE APPLICATION PERFORMANCE AND RESOURCE UTILIZATION IN THE DYNAMIC CLOUD. THIS WORK CAN ADVANCE THE CLOUD OS BY SERVING AS A FRAMEWORK FOR OPTIMIZING THE UTILIZATION OF VARIOUS VIRTUALIZED RESOURCES. THE OUTCOMES WILL BE RELEASED FOR PUBLIC USE. HANDS ON PROJECTS WILL BE CREATED DURING THE PROJECT DEVELOPMENT TO ENRICH EXISTING COURSES RELATED TO OS AND CLOUD COMPUTING. THIS PROJECT WILL INVOLVE STUDENTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS AND PROMOTE RESEARCH IN COMPUTER SYSTEMS FOR ALL UNDERGRADUATES. FOUR STEPS WILL BE TAKEN TO ACHIEVE THE PROJECT GOAL. FIRST, THE MISMATCHES IN MAJOR VIRTUALIZED RESOURCE ABSTRACTIONS (I.E., CPU, MEMORY, AND CACHE) WILL BE ANALYZED IN A CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT TO UNDERSTAND THEIR IMPACTS, INCLUDING RESULTANT SYSTEM ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR AND APPLICATION PERFORMANCE DEGRADATION. SECOND, ACCURATE RESOURCE ABSTRACTIONS WILL BE CREATED TO FIX THE IDENTIFIED MISMATCHES USING PROBING TECHNIQUES. SPECIFICALLY, A SET OF MICRO-BENCHMARKS, CALLED VPROBERS, WILL BE DEVELOPED TO PROFILE THE DYNAMIC NATURE OF THE VIRTUALIZED RESOURCES WITHOUT RELYING ON THE HYPERVISOR SUPPORT OR APPLICATION PORTING, MAKING THIS SOLUTION PRACTICAL IN THE EMERGING MULTI-CLOUD ENVIRONMENT. THE ACCURATE RESOURCE ABSTRACTIONS PROBED WITHIN OCTOPUS OS CAN ALSO BE LEVERAGED BY CLOUD APPLICATION AND LANGUAGE RUNTIME, AND ARE CRITICAL TO PROVIDE RESOURCE VISIBILITY FOR CROSS-CLOUD OPTIMIZATIONS. LEAPS-MPS: CORRELATED METHODS FOR CORRELATED PHASES -NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARY A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF HOW ELECTRONS BEHAVE IN MATERIALS HAS POWERED SOME OF THE MOST TRANSFORMATIVE TECHNOLOGIES OF MODERN LIFE, FROM PERSONAL COMPUTING AND MOBILE DEVICES TO WEATHER PREDICTION AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. THESE ADVANCES WERE MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH BREAKTHROUGHS IN SEMICONDUCTOR TECHNOLOGY, FOR EXAMPLE THE INVENTION OF THE TRANSISTOR. TODAY, RESEARCHERS ARE EXPLORING A NEW CLASS OF SEMICONDUCTOR INTERFACES, KNOWN AS TWO-DIMENSIONAL MOIR? MATERIALS, THAT MAY DRIVE THE NEXT GENERATION OF INNOVATIONS. THESE MATERIALS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO SUPPORT NEW TECHNOLOGIES SUCH AS ULTRA-EFFICIENT SPINTRONIC DEVICES AND MAY ONE DAY BECOME THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF FAULT-TOLERANT QUANTUM COMPUTERS. HOWEVER, SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF THESE MATERIALS IS STILL IN ITS EARLY STAGES. IN PARTICULAR, EXISTING THEORETICAL MODELS OFTEN RELY ON SIMPLIFIED, QUALITATIVE APPROACHES THAT CANNOT FULLY CAPTURE THE COMPLEX BEHAVIORS OBSERVED IN EXPERIMENTS. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO DEVELOP MORE ACCURATE, PREDICTIVE TOOLS TO MODEL THESE SYSTEMS BY COMBINING MACHINE LEARNING (ML) TECHNIQUES WITH ADVANCED QUANTUM SIMULATION METHODS. THE GOAL IS TO DISCOVER NEW ELECTRONIC PHASES OF MATTER, CHARACTERIZE THEIR PROPERTIES, AND GENERATE RELIABLE BENCHMARK DATA TO SUPPORT FUTURE RESEARCH. IN ADDITION TO ADVANCING MATERIALS SCIENCE, THE PROJECT WILL BROADEN ACCESS TO COMPUTATIONAL RESEARCH. THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR (PI) WILL MENTOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN AREAS SUCH AS PROGRAMMING, SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING, AND DATA ANALYSIS. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO MAKE USE OF HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY?S NEW HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING CLUSTER AND INCLUDE OUTREACH EVENTS DESIGNED TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS FROM ACROSS DISCIPLINES TO ESSENTIAL COMPUTATIONAL RESEARCH SKILLS. TECHNICAL SUMMARY THIS PROJECT INVESTIGATES STRONGLY CORRELATED ELECTRONIC PHASES IN TWO-DIMENSIONAL MOIR? MATERIALS, WITH THE GOAL OF ADVANCING OUR THEORETICAL UNDERSTANDING OF THESE MATERIALS FROM QUALITATIVE TO QUANTITATIVE. MOIR? MATERIALS HOST LONG-RANGE PERIODIC POTENTIALS THAT ENHANCE ELECTRON-ELECTRON INTERACTIONS, LEADING TO UNCONVENTIONAL ELECTRONIC AND MAGNETIC STATES SUCH AS GENERALIZED WIGNER CRYSTALS, SUPERCONDUCTORS, AND TOPOLOGICAL INSULATORS. THESE PHENOMENA ARE NOT WELL DESCRIBED BY STANDARD MEAN-FIELD THEORY. THE INTELLECTUAL MERIT OF THE PROJECT LIES IN ITS USE OF MANY-BODY WAVEFUNCTION TECHNIQUES, WHICH CAN UNCOVER NOVEL CORRELATED ELECTRONIC PHASES THAT ARE INACCESSIBLE TO THE STANDARD APPROACH. THE RESEARCH THAT WILL BE CARRIED OUT WILL EMPLOY A MULTI-MESSENGER COMPUTATIONAL FRAMEWORK THAT INTEGRATES DENSITY FUNCTIONAL THEORY, DIFFUSION MONTE CARLO, AND NEURAL QUANTUM STATES SIMULATIONS. THE PI WILL USE MACHINE LEARNING TECHNIQUES TO EXPAND THE FLEXIBILITY OF VARIATIONAL ANS?TZE FOR STRONGLY CORRELATED SYSTEMS AND INTERPRET THE EMERGENT SOLUTIONS THROUGH THE LENS OF MANY-BODY PHYSICS. HIGH-ACCURACY DIFFUSION MONTE CARLO SIMULATIONS CAN HELP DISTINGUISH PHYSICALLY MEANINGFUL PHASES FROM ARTIFACTS OF VARIATIONAL OVERFITTING. THE RESULTING BENCHMARK DATASETS WILL SERVE AS REFERENCE POINTS FOR EVALUATING AND IMPROVING APPROXIMATE METHODS. THE BROADER IMPACTS OF THE FUNDED ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE: (1) ESTABLISHING A COMPUTATIONAL RESEARCH COMMUNITY AT HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY AND NEIGHBORING INSTITUTIONS, INCLUDING ADELPHI UNIVERSITY AND NASSAU COMMUNITY COLLEGE. THE PI WILL HOST TUTORIALS TO TEACH THE BASICS OF ML AND COMPUTATIONAL RESEARCH TO INTERESTED STUDENTS, INTRODUCING SKILLS THAT ARE TRANSFERABLE ACROSS DISCIPLINES; (2) TRAINING UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCHERS IN HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING, AI-ASSISTED SIMULATION, AND SCIENTIFIC SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT; AND (3) USING THE PROJECT?S OUTPUTS TO ENHANCE INTERDISCIPLINARY EDUCATION IN COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE. SUCH ADVANCEMENTS CAN ENHANCE THE BANDWIDTH OF WIRELESS NETWORKS, INCREASE THE PRECISION OF MILITARY AND WEATHER RADAR SYSTEMS, AND BOOST THE PERFORMANCE OF SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS. RADIO-FREQUENCY (RF) ANTENNAS PLAY A CRUCIAL ROLE IN THESE WIRELESS SYSTEMS BY CONVERTING ELECTRICAL SIGNALS INTO ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS THAT RADIATE IN SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS. BY PRECISELY CONTROLLING THE DIRECTION OF THESE ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES (KNOWN AS THE RADIATION PATTERN), WIRELESS SYSTEMS CAN CONCENTRATE THEIR SIGNAL POWER EFFICIENTLY, ENHANCING THEIR OVERALL EFFECTIVENESS. THE ADVENT OF PHASED ARRAYS, WHICH ARE COLLECTIONS OF ANTENNAS THAT CAN ELECTRONICALLY ALTER THEIR RADIATION PATTERNS, HAS REVOLUTIONIZED THE CAPABILITIES OF WIRELESS SYSTEMS. HOWEVER, TRADITIONAL PHASED ARRAY PERFORMANCE IS LIMITED BY THE PROPERTIES AND PLACEMENTS OF THEIR INDIVIDUAL ANTENNAS. THESE CHALLENGES CAN BE ADDRESSED BY INTEGRATING METAMATERIALS (PASSIVE METALLIC STRUCTURES THAT MANIPULATE ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS IN BENEFICIAL WAYS) INTO THE PHASED ARRAY. RECENT ADVANCES IN METAMATERIALS EQUIPPED WITH PROGRAMMABLE SWITCHES HAVE SHOWN PROMISE IN DYNAMICALLY ADJUSTING RADIATION PATTERNS, PAVING THE WAY FOR PHASED ARRAYS WITH IMPROVED CONTROL OVER ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO TACKLE THE COMPUTATIONAL CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED WITH OPTIMIZING THE SETTINGS OF THESE PROGRAMMABLE METAMATERIALS. BY LEVERAGING RECENT ADVANCES IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI), A DEEP NEURAL NETWORK IS TRAINED ON BOTH SIMULATED AND EXPERIMENTAL DATA TO UNCOVER THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SWITCH SETTINGS AND RADIATION PATTERN CHARACTERISTICS. THE NETWORK IS THEN ANALYZED TO CREATE A HUMAN-INTERPRETABLE REPRESENTATION OF THESE RELATIONSHIPS. THE INSIGHTS GAINED THEN INFORM ENHANCEMENTS TO THE DEEP NEURAL NETWORK, THE OPTIMIZATION APPROACH, AND THE DESIGN OF IMPROVED METAMATERIALS. ULTIMATELY, THE PROJECT SEEKS TO ADVANCE THE FIELD OF PROGRAMMABLE METAMATERIAL DESIGN AND ENHANCE THE PERFORMANCE OF ANTENNA AND PHASED ARRAY TECHNOLOGIES. ON THE EDUCATION SIDE, THIS PROJECT ESTABLISHES A NEW INTEGRATED RESEARCH AND EDUCATION PROGRAM IN HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY, A PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTION, TO MOTIVATE AND TRAIN STUDENTS TOWARD PROFESSIONAL CAREERS IN RF ENGINEERING, CONTRIBUTING TO THE WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT IN THE LOCAL CIVILIAN AND MILITARY TELECOMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY. THIS PROJECT CHARACTERIZES THE OPTIMIZATION PROBLEM PRESENTED BY PROGRAMMABLE METAMATERIALS EMBEDDED IN THE NEAR-FIELD OF A PHASED ARRAY, FOCUSING ON THREE MAIN RESEARCH OBJECTIVES: (1) DEVELOP AN EFFECTIVE DEEP LEARNING APPROACH THAT SOLVES EXAMPLE PROBLEMS AND EFFICIENTLY UTILIZES COMPUTATIONAL RESOURCES, (2) VISUALIZE AND CHARACTERIZE THE OPTIMIZATION PROBLEM'S FEATURE SPACE WHILE ANALYZING THE ELECTROMAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF THESE FEATURES, AND (3) IDENTIFY METHODS TO SIMPLIFY THE OPTIMIZATION PROBLEM AND ENHANCE METAMATERIAL DESIGN BY LEVERAGING THE FEATURE SPACE AND ITS ELECTROMAGNETIC PROPERTIES. TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVE (1), A CONVOLUTIONAL NEURAL NETWORK IS TRAINED USING SUPERVISED LEARNING WITH SIMULATED TRAINING DATA. TRANSFER LEARNING TECHNIQUES FINE-TUNE THE NEURAL NETWORK ON AN EXISTING ARRAY WITH EMBEDDED PROGRAMMABLE METAMATERIALS; THE ARRAY IS ALSO UTILIZED TO TEST THE NETWORK'S PERFORMANCE. FOR OBJECTIVE (2), FEATURE VISUALIZATION AND ATTRIBUTION TECHNIQUES EXTRACT AND INTERPRET THE FEATURES IDENTIFIED BY THE NEURAL NETWORK. THESE FEATURES UNDERGO STUDY THROUGH FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS TO IDENTIFY THE ELECTROMAGNETIC MECHANISMS DRIVING PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS. ADDITIONALLY, THE FEATURES ARE EXAMINED TO IDENTIFY PATTERNS THAT CAN BE LEVERAGED TO REDUCE THE COMPLEXITY OF THE OPTIMIZATION PROBLEM. THESE INSECT PREDATORS ARE RELEASED IN GREEN HOUSES AND FIELDS TO CONTROL AGRICULTURAL PESTS INCLUDING APHIDS, WHITEFLIES, AND SCALE, AMONG OTHERS. PEST MANAGEMENT WITH LACEWINGS IS AN EFFECTIVE STRATEGY WHICH IS THOUGHT TO BE MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE THAN PESTICIDE USE ALONE. HARNESSING THE NATURALLY OCCURRING ODORS PRODUCED BY LACEWINGS, THEIR HOST PLANTS, OR THEIR PREY HAS THE POTENTIAL TO ATTRACT AND RETAIN GREEN LACEWINGS IN AND AROUND CROPS WHICH COULD IMPROVE PEST CONTROL EFFICIENCY AND DECREASE COST. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP NEW METHODS TO ATTRACT AND RETAIN LACEWINGS IN CROPS. TO ACHIEVE THIS AIM WE WILL COLLECT AND IDENTIFY THE ODOR COMPOUNDS PRODUCED BY LACEWINGS THAT MAY ATTRACT THEM TO CROPS AND CHARACTERIZE GENES UNDERLYING ODOR PERCEPTION IN LACEWINGS. WE WILL THEN USECOMPUTER-BASED SIMULATION TO PREDICT AFFINITY BETWEEN ODOR COMPOUNDS AND ODOR RECEPTION GENES IN LACEWINGS AND APPROACH THAT COULD ALLOW US TO NARROW IN ON THE ODOR COMPOUNDS MOST LIKELY TO WORK AS ATTRACTANTS. THE RECENT ADVANCES IN KU-BAND WIND SPEED RETRIEVALS [FORE ET AL 2014] AND IN THE PRESENCE OF RAIN INDICATE THAT THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE PHYSICAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SPATIAL VARIATION OF SURFACE WINDS WITHIN A SCATTEROMETER RESOLUTION CELL (WIND VECTOR CELL; WVC) AND THE OBSERVED BACKSCATTER. THERE IS A NEED FOR IMPROVEMENT IN THE ABILITY OF THIS TYPE OF SCATTEROMETER TO ESTIMATE WIND SPEED AND DIRECTION IN THE PRESENCE OF RAIN. THE WIND VECTOR PRODUCTS THAT ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE DERIVED USING THESE APPROACHES AND WITHOUT A SEPARATE BIAS ADJUSTMENT OFTEN HAVE RELATIVELY LARGE ERRON IN SPEED AND DIRECTION. IN EFFECT THE PRESENCE OF RAIN FREQUENTLY LEADS TO ERRONEOUS CORRECTIONS BY THESE METHODS. RAIN EVENTS ARE OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE VERY LARGE DIRECTIONAL DIVENITY OF WINDS WHEN OBSERVED ON A SCALE SMALLER THAN A RADAR FOOTPRINT. SINCE THE KU-BAND RADAR SIGNATURE IS SENSITIVE TO THE RELATIVE AZIMUTH ANGLE BETWEEN THE WIND AND OBSERVATION DIRECTIONS THIS RAPID SPATIAL VARIABILITY IN WIND DIRECTION WILL AFFECT THE MEASURED RADAR CRO11 SECTION. THIS WIND INHOMOGENEITY COULD BE DOMINATING THE VARIABILITY IN THE BACKSCATTERED SIGNAL MEASURED BY THE SCATTEROMETER. THE TRADITIONAL ASSUMPTION THAT THE SCATTEROMETER WIND SPEEDS (E.G. RAPIDSCAT L2B PRODUCT) ARE SCALAR AVERAGES OF THE SURFACE WIND SPEED IS NOT WELL SUITED FOR WIND CONDITIONS WHERE THERE IS LARGE VARIABILITY IN DIRECTION SUCH AS AROUND RAIN EVENTS. THIS PROPOSAL BRINGS A NEW HIGH-RESOLUTION WIND VECTOR PRODUCT (HOURLY 2.5 KM SPACING) INTO THE STUDY OF THE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE RADAR CROSS SECTION. THE METHODOLOGY HERE CONTRIBUTES A LAYER OF PHYSICAL INVESTIGATION THAT HAS NOT BEEN PREVIOUSLY POSSIBLE. THE GOAL IS TO PRODUCE NEW KNOWLEDGE THAT WILL LEAD TO METHODS FOR REDUCING THE ERRORS IN SATELLITE DERIVED WINDS THAT ARE CAUSED BY THE PRESENCE OF RAIN AND PERHAPS TO SUPPORT THE NEED FOR HIGHER RESOLUTION SCATTEROMETERS. WE WISH TO COMPARE THE 12.5 KM AND 25 KM L2A BACKSCATTER (AFTER ADJUSTMENT FOR RAIN) TO THE VALUES ESTIMATED FROM THE HIGHER RESOLUTION WIND PRODUCT AND THE RAPIDSCAT GEOPHYSICAL MODEL FUNCTION (GMF). WE WILL STUDY HOW THE LARGER SCALE 12.5 AND 25 KM VALUES FIT IN THE PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION OF VALUES WE HAVE AND HOW IT WOULD COMPARE TO THE APPROPRIATE AREA AVERAGE. WE SUSPECT THAT THIS WILL BE HIGHLY USEFUL IN EXPLAINING ANY VARIABILITY IN BACKSCATTER ASSOCIATED WITH DIRECTION. A CHECK ON THIS INTERPRETATION IS TO COMPARE THE L2B WINDS TO THE HIGHER RESOLUTION WINDS WITH DILJERENT METHODS OF AREA AVERAGING. IDEALLY THE AREA WEIGHTING WILL EXPLAIN THE L2A BACKSCATTER BUT FF NOT THE BIAS COMPARISON ON THE WINDS SHOULD EXPLAIN OFFSETS DUE TO THE BIAS. USING SPECIFIC REGIMES OF WIND MAGNITUDE AND RAIN INTENSITY WILL LEAD TO NUMEROUS SPECIAL CASES. CASES WILL BE DEVELOPED TO STUDY THE VORTICITY AND DIVERGENCE IN THE L2B PRODUCTS FOR COMPARISON WITH THE VALUES IN THE HIGHER RESOLUTION PRODUCT. THE SPATIAL PATTERNS WILL BE COMPARED AS WELL AS THE PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS. THIS APPROACH WILL RESULT IN AN ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPORTANCE OF CONSIDERING SUB-VWC DIRECTIONAL VARIABILITY AND PROVIDE (AFTER ACCOUNTING FOR AVERAGING) A MEASURE OF THE RANDOM ERROR IN THE RETRIEVED WINDS. SUCH ASSESSMENTS HAVE NOT BEEN DONE BEFORE AND WILL PROVIDE NEW INSIGHTS INTO WIND RETRIEVALS IN AREAS OF WIND VARIABILITY WHICH ARE OFTEN OPERATIONALLY INTERESTING REGIONS. THERE IS NO PRECEDENT FOR THE USE OF THESE HIGH RESOLUTION WINDS IN ASSOCIATION WITH SATELLITE SCATTEROMETER MEASUREMENTS. THIS UNIQUE DATA SET PRESENTS A NEW OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE WELL KNOWN SITUATIONS AND ESTABLISHED METHODS WITH THE CAPABILITY PROVIDED BY AN ADDITIONAL RESOURCE.

THROUGH THIS APPROACH, OUR BE UNDERGRADUATES INCLUDING DIVERSE AND UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITIES WILL HAVE INCREASED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCY, PRACTICE, AND MODERN SKILLS THAT ARE VITAL TO MEET THE WORKFORCE DEMANDS IN BIOMEDICAL AND HEALTHCARE TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRIES. THIS INNOVATIVE PROPOSAL OF THREE DESIGN PHASES: DEVICE CONCEPTUALIZATION, PERFORMANCE EVALUATION USING FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS (FEA), AND FURTHER DEVELOPMENT IN THE SENIOR DESIGN COURSE, EFFECTIVELY EXTENDS THE TRADITIONAL ONE-SEMESTER COURSE INTO A PRODUCTIVE THREE-YEAR EXPERIENCE, ALLOWING STUDENTS TO EXPLORE PROTOTYPING, TRANSLATIONAL, AND BUSINESS ASPECTS OF MATURED DEVICE CONCEPTS. AS OUR POPULATION AGES AND THE PREVALENCE OF NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES INCREASES, THE BURDEN OF MEMORY IMPAIRMENT IS EXPECTED TO SURGE. HENCE, IT IS CRITICAL TO DEVELOP NOVEL INTERVENTIONS THAT IMPROVE MEMORY PERFORMANCE. THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO DETERMINE THE MECHANISMS OF HUMAN MEMORY BRAIN NETWORK ACTIVITY AND DEVELOP BIOMARKER- GUIDED, CLOSED-LOOP ELECTRICAL BRAIN STIMULATION (EBS) THAT CAN BE UTILIZED TO CORRECT PATHOLOGIC BRAIN STATES AND RESTORE SUCCESSFUL MEMORY FUNCTION. SPECIFIC PATTERNS OF NEURAL ACTIVITY ACROSS THE BRAIN, ESPECIALLY FLUCTUATIONS IN THE THETA (4-8HZ) AND RIPPLE (80-140HZ) FREQUENCIES, ARE CORRELATED WITH SUCCESSFUL HUMAN MEMORY ENCODING AND RETRIEVAL. WE PROPOSE TO FURTHER ELUCIDATE THESE BRAIN DYNAMICS AND IMPLEMENT EBS GUIDED BY NEUROPHYSIOLOGY TO IMPROVE MEMORY FUNCTION. THE KEY INNOVATIONS OF THIS PROPOSAL ARE THE APPLICATION OF DIRECT, CLOSED-LOOP EBS IN AWAKE HUMANS THAT IS PRECISELY TIMED TO ENDOGENOUS MEMORY NETWORK ACTIVITY, AND A FOCUS ON INVESTIGATING AND HARNESSING LOCAL ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL RHYTHMS IN THE THETA AND RIPPLE FREQUENCIES FOR OPTIMIZING EBS. WE WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR HIGH-VOLUME EPILEPSY SURGICAL CENTER SPECIALIZING IN STEREOENCEPHALOGRAPHY ELECTRODE IMPLANTATION IN NEUROSURGICAL PATIENTS. THIS REPRESENTS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO RECORD HIGH-RESOLUTION, IN-VIVO ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL RECORDINGS OF HUMAN MEMORY BRAIN NETWORKS AND APPLY EBS WITH HIGH SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL PRECISION. THE CONFERENCES IN THIS SERIES HAVE AS THEIR CENTRAL THEME THE STUDY OF RANDOMNESS AT THE INTERSECTION OF MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE. RANDOMNESS IS A NATURAL INFORMAL NOTION IN OUR LIVES AND A FORMAL, MATHEMATICAL NOTION IN PROBABILITY THEORY, BUT HERE WE SEEK TO USE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ALGORITHMS TO QUANTIFY THE LEVELS OF RANDOMNESS THAT A MATHEMATICAL OBJECT (SUCH AS AN INFINITE BINARY STRING) CAN POSSESS. SINCE THE PANDEMIC HAS MADE IT FAR MORE DIFFICULT FOR AMERICAN EARLY-CAREER RESEARCHERS AND GRADUATE STUDENTS TO FORM INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL NETWORKS, IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO TRAVEL, SHARE THEIR WORK, AND BUILD IN-PERSON COLLABORATIONS WITH THEIR COLLEAGUES ABROAD NOW. THE COMPUTABILITY, COMPLEXITY AND RANDOMNESS CONFERENCE SERIES HAS BEEN ONGOING SINCE 2004 AND PROMOTES RESEARCH IN ALGORITHMIC RANDOMNESS, COMPLEXITY THEORY, AND COMPUTABILITY THEORY AS WELL AS APPLICATIONS OF ALGORITHMIC RANDOMNESS TO AREAS OF MATHEMATICS SUCH AS ERGODIC THEORY AND GEOMETRIC MEASURE THEORY AND OTHER AREAS OF COMPUTABILITY THEORY SUCH AS COMPUTABLE STRUCTURE THEORY AND REVERSE MATHEMATICS. THE FOCUS OF THIS WORKSHOP IS THE FOUNDATIONS OF COMPUTATION, SPECIFICALLY COMPUTABILITY THEORY AND COMPLEXITY THEORY. RESEARCHERS IN THESE FIELDS ADDRESS QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DIFFICULTY OF SOLVING A COMPUTATIONAL PROBLEM, WHETHER IN TERMS OF THE TIME AND SPACE REQUIRED FOR A COMPUTER TO DO SO OR IN TERMS OF THE RELATIVE DIFFICULTY OF PROBLEMS THAT A COMPUTER CANNOT SOLVE.
