LOUIS STOKES NEW STEM PATHWAYS IMPLEMENTATION-ONLY ALLIANCE: LOWER HUDSON VALLEY CATHOLIC COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES CONSORTIUM -THE LOWER HUDSON VALLEY CATHOLIC COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES CONSORTIUM LSAMP (LHVCCUC LSAMP) PROJECT AIMS TO HELP ADDRESS STEM WORKFORCE PIPELINE CHALLENGES, BUILDING UPON THE ADVANTAGE THAT NYS PRIVATE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES CONFER MORE DEGREES THAN THEIR PUBLIC COUNTERPARTS. THE LHVCCUC LSAMP PROJECT IS AN EXTENSION OF THE LHVCCUC, AN CONSORTIUM COMPRISING TEN PRIVATE CATHOLIC COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES ACROSS NEW YORK STATE (NYS). THE LHVCCUC LSAMP PROJECT ENCOMPASSES SEVEN INSTITUTIONS: MOLLOY UNIVERSITY, MANHATTAN COLLEGE, MOUNT SAINT MARY COLLEGE, ST. FRANCIS COLLEGE, ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY, ST. JOSEPH'S UNIVERSITY NEW YORK, AND ST. THOMAS AQUINAS COLLEGE. NEW YORK STATE DATA INDICATE THAT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE GRADUATING WITHOUT ADEQUATE PREPARATION IN STEM AND THE TOTAL NUMBER OF NYS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IS DECLINING. THIS COMBINED WITH A NATIONAL SHORTAGE OF QUALIFIED INDIVIDUALS TO MEET THE DEMAND FOR STEM PROFESSIONALS, UNDERSCORES THE CRITICAL NEED TO STRENGTHEN THE STATE'S STEM PIPELINE. FORTIFYING THE STEM PATHWAY IS ESPECIALLY CRUCIAL GIVEN NYS IS HOME TO THE NEW YORK METROPOLITAN AREA, RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE MOST RACIALLY AND ETHNICALLY DIVERSE GEOGRAPHIC REGIONS AND THE MOST POPULATED METRO AREA IN THE UNITED STATES. THE LHVCCUC LSAMP PROJECT ADOPTS INTERSECTIONALITY AND A SENSE OF BELONGING AS OVERARCHING FRAMEWORKS. INTERSECTIONALITY PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY TO UNDERSTAND THE MULTI-LAYERED IDENTITIES OF THE STUDENTS SERVED BY THE LHVCCUC ALLIANCE AND TO DESIGN PROJECT ACTIVITIES THAT ADDRESS UNIQUE MARGINALIZING EXPERIENCES FOR INDIVIDUALS FACING MULTIPLE OPPRESSIONS SIMULTANEOUSLY (E.G., WOMEN OF COLOR IN STEM DEALING WITH RACISM AND SEXISM CONCURRENTLY). IN HIGHER EDUCATION, A SENSE OF BELONGING CAN REFER TO STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS OF SOCIAL SUPPORT WITHIN THE CAMPUS ENVIRONMENT. IT ENCOMPASSES FEELINGS OF CONNECTEDNESS, BEING VALUED, CARED FOR, RESPECTED, AND IMPORTANT TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY INCLUDING FACULTY, STAFF, AND PEERS. THE LHVCCUC LSAMP PROJECT OUTLINES FOUR MAIN GOALS: 1) INCREASE THE ENROLLMENT OF UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITIES (URMS) IN STEM MAJORS; 2) IMPROVE FIRST-TO-SECOND-YEAR RETENTION; 3) CULTIVATE STRONG STEM/SCIENTIST IDENTITIES THROUGH STEM ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES; AND 4) SUPPORT SUCCESSFUL ENTRY INTO GRADUATE STUDY AND STEM CAREERS. TO ACHIEVE THESE GOALS, ALLIANCE-WIDE ACTIVITIES INCLUDE FACULTY-LED RESEARCH EXPERIENCES, PEER MENTORING, INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP TUTORING, WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS, AND INTERNSHIPS, AMONG OTHER INITIATIVES. ASPIRE TO CAREERS IN SCIENCE 2 -THE ALUMNI, STUDENTS, PROFESSORS, INTERNSHIPS, RESEARCH, ENRICHMENT (ASPIRE) TO CAREERS IN SCIENCE 2 PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE NATIONAL NEED FOR WELL-EDUCATED SCIENTISTS, MATHEMATICIANS, ENGINEERS, AND TECHNICIANS BY SUPPORTING THE RETENTION AND GRADUATION OF HIGH-ACHIEVING, LOW-INCOME STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED AT MOLLOY UNIVERSITY, A HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTION. OVER ITS SIX-YEAR DURATION, THIS TRACK 2 GRANT WILL FUND SCHOLARSHIPS, FOR FOUR YEARS, TO 22 UNIQUE FULL-TIME STUDENTS PURSUING BACHELOR?S DEGREES IN BIOLOGY OR EARTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES (EES). THE PROJECT OFFERS HIGH-IMPACT ACTIVITIES AND BEST PRACTICES TO ACHIEVE STRONGER RETENTION AND GRADUATION RATES, INCREASED STUDENT LEARNING, AND A GREATER CHANCE OF SUCCESSFUL TRANSITION TO STEM-RELATED EMPLOYMENT OR GRADUATE STUDY UPON GRADUATION. EVIDENCE-BASED ACTIVITIES INTEND TO MEET THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES: ENROLL 22 FULL-TIME BIOLOGY OR EES MAJORS IN THREE COHORTS; AWARD ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS TO MEET THEIR UNMET NEED; OBTAIN A FIRST-TO-SECOND YEAR RETENTION RATE OF 80%; INCREASE STUDENT SUCCESS RATE BY 5% IN SPECIFIED UNDERGRADUATE MAJOR STEM REQUIREMENTS KNOWN TO BE HURDLES; AND SUPPORT SCHOLARS TO PURSUE GRADUATE STUDY OR ACCEPT EMPLOYMENT IN A SCIENCE-RELATED FIELD POST-GRADUATION. ASSESSMENT EFFORTS WILL FOCUS ON GENERATING KNOWLEDGE REGARDING EFFECTIVE PROGRAM DESIGN FOR DIVERSE STUDENT POPULATIONS. PSYCHOSOCIAL ASPECTS OF THE ENHANCED COHORT EXPERIENCE AND INCLUSION OF FAMILY INFORMATION SESSIONS THAT ADDRESS FINANCIAL CONCERNS WILL BE EXAMINED ALONG WITH STEM JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN FIELDS OTHER THAN HEALTHCARE, AND DIFFERENCES IN CULTURAL NEEDS OF STUDENTS. ADDITIONALLY, THE FINDINGS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE KNOWLEDGE BASE OF HOW THE DESIGN OF FOUR-YEAR STEM PROGRAMS INFORM ACADEMIC AND PSYCHOSOCIAL EFFECTS ON STUDENT PERSISTENCE AND SUCCESS IN CAREERS IN SCIENCE. PROJECT ACTIVITIES, SERVICES, AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO AID RETENTION WILL DEMONSTRATE THEIR VALUE IN RETAINING STUDENTS, IMPROVING GRADES, AND ENCOURAGING STUDENTS TO GRADUATE IN FOUR YEARS. AN EXTENSIVE EVALUATION PLAN WILL INVOLVE BOTH FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE APPROACHES AND RESULTS WILL BE USED INTERNALLY TO INFORM AND IMPROVE STEM PROGRAMMING FOR ALL MOLLOY STUDENTS. CAMPUS PROJECT FOCUSES ON SPECIFIC NEEDS OF VETERANS, STUDENTS OF COLOR, STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES, LGBTQ+ STUDENTS, FIRST YEARS, STUDENT-SURVIVORS, AND NURSING AND ALLIED HEALTH STUDENTS. PROJECT GOALS: (1) PROVIDE OR ENSURE THERAPEUTIC SERVICES TO MOLLOY STUDENTS BY BUILDING CAPACITY AND STRENGTHENING NETWORKING INFRASTRUCTURE; (2) CREATE CAMPUSWIDE EARLY INTERVENTION AND EFFECTIVE RESPONSE TO SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS, SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS, AND SUICIDE IDEATION THROUGH SCREENING, EDUCATION, OUTREACH, AND TRAINING; AND (3) ENSURE A HEALTHY, SUPPORTIVE MOLLOY CAMPUS, AND INCREASE PROTECTIVE FACTORS THAT PROMOTE MENTAL HEALTH. MEASURABLE OBJECTIVES: SUPPLEMENT THE PROJECT TEAM WITH A MENTAL HEALTH TASK FORCE OF AT LEAST 10 INTERNAL EXPERTS; UPDATE ALL PROMOTIONAL/EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS; DISTRIBUTE CRISIS RESPONSE PROTOCOLS ANNUALLY; ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO UTILIZE SCREENING TOOLS; CONSISTENTLY PUBLICIZE 4 CRISIS HOTLINES RELEVANT TO TARGET GROUPS; IMPLEMENT 4 GATEKEEPER TRAININGS FOR KEY DEPARTMENTS SUCH AS PUBLIC SAFETY, RESIDENCE LIFE, CAMPUS LIFE, ATHLETICS, HEALTH SERVICES, AND NURSING/ALLIED HEALTH FACULTY; CO-PROGRAM 4 EVENTS WITH OTHER CAMPUS DEPARTMENTS AND INITIATIVES; DISSEMINATE INFORMATIONAL MATERIALS TO FAMILIES ANNUALLY; FACILITATE 6+ TARGET GROUP WORKSHOPS UTILIZING COMMUNITY PARTNERS; INCREASE COUNSELING TO AT-RISK STUDENTS, IN-HOUSE OR BY REFERRAL; IMPLEMENT 2 STRATEGIES TO REDUCE ACCESS TO LETHAL MEANS AMONG STUDENTS WITH IDENTIFIED SUICIDE RISK; AND UTILIZE CLINICALLY APPROPRIATE EMERGENCY SERVICE RESPONSES 100% OF THE TIME. NUMBER OF PEOPLE TO BE SERVED ANNUALLY AND THROUGHOUT THE LIFETIME OF THE PROJECT: IN ADDITION TO EXPOSING THE WHOLE CAMPUS OF OVER 6,000 STUDENTS AND EMPLOYEES EACH YEAR, THE FIRST YEAR WILL PROVIDE ENHANCED SERVICES TO 750, SECOND YEAR TO 1,000 AND THIRD YEAR TO 1,250, BUILDING ON PAST ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE 2016-2019 GLS GRANT.
