THE IMMEDIATE ACCESS TECHNOLOGY REENTRY PROGRAM WILL ADDRESS PAROLEES' UNIQUE TRANSITION FROM CORRECTIONAL FACILITY TO SOCIETY DURING A PANDEMIC. THIS PROGRAM WILL ASSIST 75 FORMERLY INCARCERATED INDIVIDUALS OVER A TWO-YEAR PERIOD. PARTICIPANTS WILL RECEIVE A SMART PHONE, GAIN THE EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS TO USE THEIR PHONES TO CONNECT, AND ACQUIRE DIGITAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND RESOURCES.

THE PROJECT WILL DRAW EXISTING ORAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS OUT OF THE LIBRARY'S ARCHIVES AND INTO PROFESSIONALLY PRODUCED PODCAST EPISODES, WHICH WILL INCREASE AWARENESS AND USE OF THESE VALUABLE AND OFTEN UNDER-UTILIZED ARCHIVAL RESOURCES. IT WILL ALSO DEVELOP THE TALENT AND PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS OF THE ASIAN AMERICAN MEDIA PROFESSIONALS HIRED FOR THEIR PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND OF MEMBERSHIP IN THE COMMUNITIES FEATURED IN THESE EPISODES.] [PURPOSE: THE CREATION OF A 10-EPISODE QUEENS MEMORY PODCAST SEASON. THESE PODCASTS WILL BE CREATED USING EXISTING ORAL HISTORIES IN THE QPL?S LIBRARY, AND EDITED BY ASIAN AMERICAN ACTIVISTS, SCHOLARS, AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS.   ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE HIRING OF 53 ASIAN AMERICAN MEDIA PROFESSIONALS TO AID IN THE CONCEPTUALIZATION, SOURCING, FACT CHECKING, AND PRODUCTION OF EACH EPISODE. MULTILINGUAL PRODUCERS WILL MAKE THE PODCAST ACCESSIBLE IN EIGHT DIFFERENT ASIAN LANGUAGES (MANDARIN, BENGALI, KOREAN, TAGALOG, HINDI, URDU, TIBETAN, AND NEPALI), ALL OF WHICH WILL BE EXPLORED DURING THE SEASON. NEW CONTENT WILL BE ADDED TO THE PODCASTS AND TO QPL?S COLLECTIONS VIA AID FROM LOCAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND ORGANIZATIONS. THE QUEENS BOROUGH PUBLIC LIBRARY (QPL) WILL ENGAGE CHILDREN AND UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS AND CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEARNING, CONNECTION, AND ENRICHMENT ONLINE BY PROVIDING MOBILE HOTSPOTS FOR PERSONAL USE TO BORROWERS OF ALL AGES LOCATED IN NEIGHBORHOODS WITH THE LOWEST BROADBAND USE AND WHO CURRENTLY DO NOT HAVE HOUSEHOLD INTERNET ACCESS. THIS AWARD WILL EXPAND THE LIBRARY'S QUEENS CONNECT INITIATIVE TO GIVE MORE QUEENS RESIDENTS RELIABLE INTERNET AND TECHNOLOGY ACCESS AS THEY ARE SEARCHING FOR JOBS, ATTENDING REMOTE CLASSES, ACCESSING TELEHEALTH PROGRAMS, AND CONNECTING WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS. QPL WILL PARTNER WITH COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS TO REACH NON-LIBRARY USERS AND IMPLEMENT NEW SERVICES THAT TURN PEOPLE INTO LIFELONG LIBRARY SUPPORTERS.
