AN ESTIMATED 229 FOSTER GRANDPARENT (FGP) VOLUNTEERS (229 VSYS) WILL SERVE IN HEAD START CENTERS, DAY CARE, AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN THE HUDSON VALLEY (NY) COUNTIES OF WESTCHESTER, PUTNAM, DUTCHESS, ULSTER, ORANGE, AND SULLIVAN. SOME OF THEIR ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE PROVIDING TUTORING AND MENTORING IN READING AS WELL AS MATH, ASSISTING TEACHERS IN THE CLASSROOM, AND COMFORTING AND CARING FOR CHILDREN WHO ARE ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED AND / OR HAVE SPECIAL OR EXCEPTIONAL NEEDS. THE PRIMARY FOCUS OF THIS PROJECT IS THE CNCS FOCUS AREA OF EDUCATION. AT THE END OF THE THREE-YEAR GRANT, 169 (75%) OF 226 K-12 AND FAITH BASED SITE STUDENTS WORKING WITH THE APPROXIMATELY 113 FGP VOLUNTEERS WILL IMPROVE READING, PROBLEM SOLVING, AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS. 120 (75%) OF 160 CHILDREN IN UNIVERSAL PRE-K AND HEAD START SITES WORKING WITH THE APPROXIMATELY 80 FGP VOLUNTEERS WILL DEMONSTRATE GAINS IN SCHOOL READINESS IN TERMS OF SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LITERACY, AND MATH SKILLS. ANOTHER 36 VOLUNTEERS WILL SERVE IN PRE-ELEMENTARY/DAYCARE SETTINGS AND COURT-BASED CHILD CARE WHERE THEY WILL COMFORT CHILDREN AND CARE FOR APPROXIMATELY 190 INFANTS/TODDLERS. THE CNCS FEDERAL INVESTMENT OF $1,163,031 WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY $28,313 IN STATE AND LOCAL FUNDS FROM THE NEW YORK STATE OFFICE FOR AGING AND WESTCHESTER COUNTY, AS WELL AS $119,347 IN IN-KIND DONATIONS.

AN ESTIMATED 229 FOSTER GRANDPARENT (FGP) VOLUNTEERS (229 VSYS) WILL SERVE IN HEAD START CENTERS, DAY CARE, AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN THE HUDSON VALLEY (NY) COUNTIES OF WESTCHESTER, PUTNAM, DUTCHESS, ULSTER, ORANGE, AND SULLIVAN. SOME OF THEIR ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE PROVIDING TUTORING AND MENTORING IN READING AS WELL AS MATH, ASSISTING TEACHERS IN THE CLASSROOM, AND COMFORTING AND CARING FOR CHILDREN WHO ARE ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED AND / OR HAVE SPECIAL OR EXCEPTIONAL NEEDS. THE PRIMARY FOCUS OF THIS PROJECT IS THE CNCS FOCUS AREA OF EDUCATION. AT THE END OF THE THREE-YEAR GRANT, 169 (75%) OF 226 K-12 AND FAITH BASED SITE STUDENTS WORKING WITH THE APPROXIMATELY 113 FGP VOLUNTEERS WILL IMPROVE READING, PROBLEM SOLVING, AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS. 120 (75%) OF 160 CHILDREN IN UNIVERSAL PRE-K AND HEAD START SITES WORKING WITH THE APPROXIMATELY 80 FGP VOLUNTEERS WILL DEMONSTRATE GAINS IN SCHOOL READINESS IN TERMS OF SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LITERACY, AND MATH SKILLS. ANOTHER 36 VOLUNTEERS WILL SERVE IN PRE-ELEMENTARY/DAYCARE SETTINGS AND COURT-BASED CHILD CARE WHERE THEY WILL COMFORT CHILDREN AND CARE FOR APPROXIMATELY 190 INFANTS/TODDLERS. THE CNCS FEDERAL INVESTMENT OF $1,024,147 WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY $28,313 IN STATE AND LOCAL FUNDS FROM THE NEW YORK STATE OFFICE FOR AGING AND WESTCHESTER COUNTY, AS WELL AS $176,500 FROM IN-KIND DONATIONS.
