SPECIFICALLY, THE NPS AND THE RECIPIENT WILL WORK TOGETHER TO SCAN SELECT ITEMS FROM THE ARCHIVES TO BE DIGITIZED USING BOTH IN-HOUSE EQUIPMENT AND OFF-SITE THROUGH A VENDOR, AS NEEDED. THE RESULTING SCANS FROM THIS PROJECT WILL DRAMATICALLY INCREASE PUBLIC ACCESS TO THIS NATIONAL RESOURCE, WHILE DECREASING THE NEED TO CONTINUOUSLY HANDLE FRAGILE HISTORIC DOCUMENTS, THUS PRESERVING THEM UNIMPAIRED. THE RECIPIENT WILL ALSO ENGAGE A PROJECT CONSULTANT WHO WILL WORK WITH NPS STAFF TO REVIEW EXISTING DIGITIZING PRACTICES AND PROVIDE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR KEY TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT SUCH AS METADATA CAPTURE AND THE USE OF A DIGITAL ASSET MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (DAMS). THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE CLEAR EXAMPLES OF "BEST PRACTICE" FOR FUTURE DIGITIZATION WORK.PERFORMANCE GOALS INCLUDING MILESTONES AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES:BY JULY 2024, ADDITIONAL IMAGES OF IMPORTANT ARCHIVAL DOCUMENTS WILL BE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC.
