PURPOSE: THE RESULTS OF THIS GRANT WILL LOWER THE BARRIERS FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM MANUFACTURERS TO ASSESS THE PERFORMANCE OF THEIR ROBOTIC SYSTEMS. THE PURPOSE OF THIS GRANT IS TO DEVELOP A STRUCTURED APPROACH TO DESIGN LOW-COST OPEN-SOURCE SENSORS BASED ON CAMERA SYSTEMS AND ELECTRONIC TEXTILES FOR SYSTEM EVALUATION OF ROBOTIC SYSTEMS, AS WELL AS DEVELOPING NOVEL OPEN-SOURCE MATHEMATICAL SOFTWARE THAT CAN BE IMPLEMENTED ON PORTABLE DEVICES. THIS GRANT WILL CREATE MATHEMATICAL METRICS TO COMPARE THESE FRAMEWORKS WITH CURRENT GROUND TRUTH SOURCES USED AT NIST, WHICH ARE OFTEN MORE EXPENSIVE AND IMMOBILE.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE COOPER UNION WILL PERFORM THE FOLLOWING:DESIGN LOW-COST OPEN-SOURCE SENSORS, BASED ON CAMERA SYSTEMS AND ELECTRONIC TEXTILES, FOR EVALUATION OF ROBOTIC SYSTEMSDEVELOP NOVEL OPEN-SOURCE MATHEMATICAL SOFTWARE THAT CAN BE IMPLEMENTED ON WIDELY AVAILABLE DEVICES, SUCH AS LAPTOPS AND MOBILE PHONES.CREATE MATHEMATICAL METRICS TO COMPARE THESE FRAMEWORKS WITH CURRENT, OFTEN MORE EXPENSIVE AND IMMOBILE GROUND TRUTH SOURCES FOUND AT NIST.EXPECTED OUTCOMES: THE GRANT WILL FOCUS ON IMPLEMENTING A SENSOR FRAMEWORK AND DEVELOPING THE SUPPORTING MATHEMATICAL SOFTWARE. THIS INCLUDES COLLABORATION WITH EL PERSONNEL TO COLLECT DATA AND COMPARE IT AGAINST NIST GROUND TRUTH SYSTEMS. THE RESEARCH WILL ALSO EXPLORE INNOVATIVE METHODS FOR REGISTERING TOOLS WITH GROUND TRUTH SYSTEMS. ALL FINDINGS WILL BE THOROUGHLY DOCUMENTED AND DISSEMINATED THROUGH PEER-REVIEWED JOURNAL ARTICLES AND CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS.INTENDED BENEFICIARIES: THE BENEFICIARIES WILL BE SMALL AND MEDIUM MANUFACTURERS. ROBOTIC SYSTEMS ARE INTEGRAL TO MODERN MANUFACTURING, AND ENHANCING THEIR PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY IS CRITICAL TO ADVANCING U.S. INNOVATION AND COMPETITIVENESS. THIS GRANT WILL SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT LOW-COST, OPEN-SOURCE FRAMEWORKS AND ROBUST MATHEMATICAL METRICS FOR EVALUATING THE CAPABILITIES OF MANUFACTURING ROBOTIC SYSTEMS.SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES: THE RECIPIENT DOES NOT INTEND TO SUBAWARD FUNDS.

PURPOSE: THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO BUILD AND IMPLEMENT LOW-COST, OPEN-SOURCE, MOBILE TOOLS FOR EVALUATING HOW WEARING AN EXOSKELETON AFFECTS THE HUMAN BODY, AS WELL AS CREATING MATHEMATICAL METHODS TO COMPARE THE OUTPUT OF THE TOOLS WITH GROUND TRUTH RESULTS OBTAINED AT NIST. THESE MOBILE TOOLS MAY BE USED TO VALIDATE TEST METHODS (FIT-TO-USER TESTS). ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE GRANTEE WILL BUILD LOW-COST, OPEN-SOURCE, MOBILE TOOLS BASED ON 1) CAMERAS AND 2) TEXTILES THAT HELP ANALYZE THE FIT OF A GIVEN EXOSKELETON, AS WELL AS 3) CREATING MATHEMATICAL METHODS TO EVALUATE HOW ACCURATE THESE TOOLS ARE COMPARED TO GROUND TRUTH SYSTEMS. EXPECTED OUTCOMES: THIS GRANT WILL PRODUCE A WEARABLE LOW-COST ELECTRONIC TEXTILE TO BE INTEGRATED INTO COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE EXOSKELETONS AS A WAY TO ACCURATELY MEASURE THE FIT TO THE USER. INTENDED BENEFICIARIES: THE BENEFICIARIES WILL INCLUDE MANUFACTURERS OF EXOSKELETONS TO VALIDATE THEIR PRODUCTS BEFORE GOING TO MARKET AND END USERS WHO WILL USE THE RESULTING TEST METHODS TO GUIDE PROCUREMENTS AND FIT OF EXOSKELETONS TO USERS. SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES: THE RECIPIENT DOES NOT INTEND TO SUBAWARD FUNDS.
