SYNTHESIS AND BIOCHEMICAL EVALUATION OF RUTHENIUM COMPOUNDS - PROJECT SUMMARY TRANSITION METAL COMPOUNDS HAVE BEEN USED AS THERAPEUTIC AGENTS. HOWEVER, TREATMENT WITH THESE COMPOUNDS, FOR EXAMPLE CISPLATIN, CAN LEAD TO DRUG RESISTANCE AND POOR EFFICACY. RUTHENIUM HAS BEEN STUDIED AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO OTHER TRANSITION METALS. THE AIMS OF THIS PROJECT ARE TO CARRY OUT THE SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION, AND BIOCHEMICAL EVALUATION OF RUTHENIUM-BASED COMPOUNDS AS POTENTIAL PHARMACEUTICAL AGENTS. RUTHENIUM COMPOUNDS HAVE GAINED ATTENTION AS POTENTIAL THERAPEUTIC AGENTS HAVING DIFFERENT MODES OF ACTION AGAINST BACTERIAL INFECTIONS, CANCER, DIABETES AND OTHER DISEASES. THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF PHARMACEUTICAL AGENTS, INCLUDING TRANSITION METAL DRUGS, EITHER TARGET DNA OR PROTEINS. RNA HAS RECENTLY RECEIVED MUCH ATTENTION AS A BIOMOLECULE IN THE FIELDS OF PUBLIC HEALTH, MEDICINE, AND BIOTECHNOLOGY. THE RICH STRUCTURAL DIVERSITY OF RNA AND ITS ROLE IN NUMEROUS CELLULAR FUNCTIONS HAVE LED TO ITS EMERGENCE AS AN IMPORTANT BIOLOGICAL TARGET FOR PHARMACEUTICAL AGENTS. VERY FEW STUDIES HAVE EXPLORED HOW TRANSITION METAL COMPLEXES BIND TO RNA MOLECULES. THE INITIAL AIM OF THIS PROJECT IS FOCUSED ON THE SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF RUTHENIUM COMPLEXES. THE SECOND AIM OF THIS PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE THE BINDING OF RUTHENIUM COMPLEXES TO VARIOUS RNA MOLECULES. RESULTS WILL REVEAL THE SPECIFIC RNA BINDING SITES OF RUTHENIUM COMPLEXES, THEIR BINDING STRENGTH, AND THE IMPACT OF BINDING ON RNA STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION. THE RUTHENIUM COMPOUNDS SYNTHESIZED IN THIS PROJECT ARE DESIGNED WITH THE PURPOSE OF ENHANCING THEIR BINDING TO NUCLEOTIDES, IMPROVING AQUEOUS SOLUBILITY, AND MAKING THEM ACTIVE AGAINST DIABETES, AND BACTERIA AND CANCER CELLS. FINALLY, THIS PROJECT WILL DETERMINE WHETHER THE NEWLY SYNTHESIZED RUTHENIUM COMPLEXES BIND TO DIHYDROFOLATE REDUCTASE (DHFR) ENZYME AND INHIBIT ITS CATALYTIC ACTIVITY. DHFR IS A CRUCIAL ENZYME WITHIN THE FOLIC ACID PATHWAY. THE FOLIC ACID PATHWAY IS IMPORTANT IN THE SYNTHESIS OF NUCLEOTIDES, AMINO ACIDS, AND OTHER CELLULAR INTERMEDIATES. DHFR ENZYME HAS BEEN TARGETED EXTENSIVELY BY ANTIFOLATE DRUGS, LIKE METHOTREXATE, WHICH HAVE BEEN ON THE MARKET FOR DECADES. COMPOUNDS SYNTHESIZED IN THIS PROJECT INCORPORATE ARCHITECTURES OF DIFFERENT ANTIFOLATE AND ANTIDIABETIC DRUGS WITH THE GOAL OF IMPROVING THEIR WATER SOLUBILITY, HYDROGEN BONDING CAPABILITIES, AND OVERALL SPECIFICITY.

ANDERSON OF THE CHEMISTRY PROGRAM AT BARD COLLEGE IS INVESTIGATING THE SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PLATINUM(IV) SPECIES WITH LIGANDS CONTAINING THIOPHENE MOIETIES. ALTHOUGH PHOTOACTIVE PLATINUM COMPOUNDS EXIST, THIS RESEARCH WILL FOCUS ON PLATINUM(IV) SPECIES, AS THEY ARE UNDERSTUDIED COMPARED TO THEIR PLATINUM(II) COUNTERPARTS, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS CLASS OF COMPOUNDS MAY ALLOW GREATER TUNABILITY OF PHOTOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES FOR POTENTIAL USE AS SENSORS OR DEVICES. A VITAL COMPONENT OF THIS WORK IS THAT IT INVOLVES THE TRAINING OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AND THESE STUDENTS WILL GAIN PROFICIENCY IN THE PRACTICE OF SCIENCE IN A CONTEMPORARY CHEMISTRY LABORATORY. UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH STUDENTS ARE TO BE INVOLVED IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE WORK FROM PERFORMING LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS TO WRITING SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES TO GIVING PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS. UNDER THIS AWARD, THE BARD COLLEGE TEAM WILL SYNTHESIZE AND CHARACTERIZE CYCLOMETALATED PT-COMPOUNDS, WHICH ARE A MULTIFACETED GROUP OF COMPOUNDS WITH APPLICATIONS IN CATALYSIS, SENSORS, AND ARTIFICIAL PHOTOSYNTHETIC DEVICES. PHOTOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE CYCLOMETALATED PLATINUM(IV) COMPOUNDS WILL BE CHARACTERIZED. MOLECULAR DESIGN STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE THEIR PROPERTIES, INCLUDING QUANTUM YIELD AND EXCITED-STATE LIFETIME, WILL BE EVALUATED. THESE STRATEGIES INCLUDE THE USE OF ISOCYANIDE LIGANDS AND OTHER STRONG FIELD LIGANDS. A SYSTEMATIC STUDY WILL INCREASE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN METAL/LIGAND COMBINATION, AND PHOTOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES. SUCCESSFUL STUDIES HERE HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO PROVIDE INSIGHT ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF BETTER DEVICES AND SENSORS USING PHOTOACTIVE TRANSITION METAL COMPLEXES. THE PLAN IS TO TARGET COMPOUNDS THAT EXHIBIT DUAL EMISSION OR RIGIDOLUMINESCENCE (RL). DUAL EMISSION PLAYS IMPORTANT ROLES IN SENSING AND LABELING APPLICATIONS, AND RL IS OF INTEREST BECAUSE RIGID MEDIA MIMIC THE ENVIRONMENT IN DEVICES. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LIGAND ARCHITECTURE AND PHOTOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES. USING LINKED OPEN DATA (LOD), YDEA ENDEAVORS TO CREATE A COMPREHENSIVE AND EXTENSIBLE DIGITAL ARCHIVE WHOSE DATA POINTS CAN BE FREELY REUSED, AND TO DEVELOP A WEB APPLICATION THAT PROVIDES MULTILINGUISTIC ACCESS TO THE INTEGRATED DURA-EUROPOS ARCHIVAL RESOURCES IN A SINGLE INTERFACE, TOGETHER WITH VISUALIZATIONS TO ENHANCE DATA INTELLIGIBILITY AT A GLANCE. THE PLANNED WORK WILL MAKE C. 30,000 ARTIFACTS AND ARCHIVAL DOCUMENTS SEARCHABLE IN ARABIC FOR THE FIRST TIME. RUI: LIGHT SCATTERING METROLOGY FOR GRAVITATIONAL WAVE OPTICS -THE LASER INTERFEROMETER GRAVITATIONAL-WAVE OBSERVATORY(LIGO) PROJECT HAS GIVEN SCIENTISTS THE ABILITY TO OBSERVE THE UNIVERSE IN A COMPLETELY NEW WAY. UNLIKE CONVENTIONAL TELESCOPES, WHICH USE THE LIGHT EMITTED BY STARS AND GALAXIES TO LEARN THEIR PROPERTIES AND THEIR PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE, GW DETECTORS USE GRAVITATIONAL WAVES (GW), WHICH ARE SIMILARLY EMITTED BY MANY ASTROPHYSICAL OBJECTS. GRAVITATIONAL WAVES ARE RIPPLES IN SPACETIME THAT TRAVEL TO EARTH AND CAUSE THE DETECTORS TO ESSENTIALLY CHANGE IN SIZE. TO OBSERVE THIS CHANGE THE LIGO DETECTORS REQUIRE STATE-OF-THE-ART MIRRORS, WHICH ARE USED TO SENSE THE STRETCHING AND CONTRACTION OF SPACE AND TIME. IMPROVEMENTS IN MIRROR DESIGN WILL ALLOW OBSERVERS TO LOOK FURTHER INTO SPACE AND DETECT MORE OF THESE GW SIGNALS. THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL AID IN PUSHING THE MIRROR TECHNOLOGY BY UTILIZING LIGHT SCATTERING AS A TOOL TO STUDY MIRROR COATINGS. SPECIFICALLY, AN IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE QUALITY OF A MIRROR IS THE PRESENCE OF DEFECTS WHICH SCATTER LIGHT AND INHIBIT THE OPERATION OF THE LIGO DETECTORS. IN ADDITION, DEFECTS MAY SOMETIMES DEVELOP ON THE MIRROR SURFACE WITH TIME, BUT THE PROCESS IS NOT ALWAYS UNDERSTOOD. THIS RESEARCH PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO STUDY DEFECTS ON MIRRORS SO THAT IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO ULTIMATELY IMPROVE LIGO?S SENSITIVITY. THE WORK WILL BE CARRIED OUT WITH THE ENGAGEMENT OF UNDERGRADUATE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, WHICH WILL PROVIDE INVALUABLE EXPERIENCE AS THEY PURSUE THEIR CAREER IN TECHNOLOGY AND ACADEMIA. COATING THERMAL NOISE AND SCATTERING PHASE NOISE ARE SOURCES OF NOISE RESPONSIBLE FOR LIMITING LIGO'S SENSITIVITY AT LOW TO MODERATELY LOW FREQUENCIES AND ARISE FROM THE OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MIRROR COATINGS. MITIGATION OF COATING THERMAL NOISE REQUIRES THE DEVELOPMENT OF A COATING WITH LOW MECHANICAL LOSS, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME SATISFYING THE STRINGENT REQUIREMENTS FOR SCATTERING AND ABSORPTION SET BY GW DETECTORS. IN ADDITION, IT IS NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND THE DEVELOPMENT OF DEFECTS ON THE MIRRORS THAT DEGRADE ITS SCATTERING AND ABSORPTION CHARACTERISTICS. THIS WORK WILL ADDRESS SUCH QUESTIONS IN A SYSTEMATIC WAY BY STUDYING THE SCATTERING PROPERTIES OF SAMPLES OF NOVEL COATINGS AS WELL AS SAMPLES ALREADY USED IN GW DETECTORS. THE PI WILL UTILIZE LIGHT SCATTERING IN A WAY THAT IS NOT BEING UTILIZED CURRENTLY, STUDYING IN DETAIL THE RADIATION PATTERNS OF INDIVIDUAL DEFECTS. SPECIFICALLY, THE PI WILL USE LIGHT SCATTERING MEASUREMENTS FROM MIRRORS TO STUDY VARIOUS ASPECTS OF NEW AND EXISTING MIRROR COATINGS. STUDIES INCLUDE I) SCATTERING PROPERTIES FROM NEWLY DESIGNED COATINGS, II) SCATTERING PROPERTIES OF DEFECTS AND SURFACES, III) FORMATION OF DEFECTS ON MIRRORS THROUGH CONTAMINATION OR AGING, AND IV) SCATTERING FROM MIRRORS AS A FUNCTION OF ANNEALING TEMPERATURE AND COATING THICKNESS. THE PROJECT ALSO INCLUDES A FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR A NOVEL BEAM TRACKING METHOD FOR GW DETECTORS USING SCATTERING. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: STRAY LIGHT CONTROL FOR COSMIC EXPLORER -GRAVITATIONAL-WAVE ASTRONOMY HAS NOW OPENED A NEW WINDOW TO THE UNIVERSE, WHICH ALONG WITH CONVENTIONAL TELESCOPES, SIGNIFICANTLY BROADENS OUR UNDERSTANDING OF ASTROPHYSICS AND COSMOLOGY. COSMIC EXPLORER IS A CONCEPT FOR A NEXT-GENERATION GRAVITATIONAL-WAVE OBSERVATORY IN THE UNITED STATES, ENABLING THE DETECTION OF NEARLY EVERY BLACK-HOLE COLLISION IN THE OBSERVABLE UNIVERSE. TO ACHIEVE THE UNPRECEDENTED SENSITIVITY OF THIS OBSERVATORY, SIGNIFICANT R&D EFFORT NEEDS TO BE INVESTED IN DESIGNS THAT WILL MINIMIZE VARIOUS SOURCES OF NOISE. THIS AWARD ADDRESSES A MAJOR NOISE SOURCE, NAMELY STRAY LIGHT, AND WILL PRODUCE A CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FOR ITS MITIGATION. SPECIFICALLY, THIS AWARD ENABLES A TEAM OF SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS TO ANALYZE HOW STRAY LIGHT IN THE INTERFEROMETER?S 40KM ARM CAVITIES MAY LIMIT COSMIC EXPLORER'S SENSITIVITY AND PRODUCE AN INITIAL CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FOR THE BEAMTUBE BAFFLES. MITIGATING STRAY LIGHT IN THE BEAMTUBES IS A HIGH-PRIORITY RESEARCH TOPIC, AS IT DIRECTLY IMPACTS THE FACILITY DESIGN AND COST. IN ADDITION, THE PROJECT WILL PRODUCE REQUIREMENTS FOR SURFACE ROUGHNESS OF THE MIRRORS USED AS TEST MASSES IN THE INTERFEROMETER AND EXPLORE LOW-SCATTER VACUUM-COMPATIBLE MATERIALS. THIS AWARD IS ONE OF A SERIES OF NSF AWARDS THAT TOGETHER WILL PRODUCE CONCEPTUAL DESIGNS AND TECHNOLOGIES TO ENABLE THE REALIZATION OF COSMIC EXPLORER. INCREASINGLY, STUDENTS IN ALL DISCIPLINES MUST LEARN TO USE COMPUTING TECHNOLOGY. TO MEET THE INCREASED NEED FOR STUDENTS TO USE COMPUTATIONAL METHODS ACROSS ALL FIELDS, NON-COMPUTING COURSES COMMONLY INTEGRATE COMPUTATIONAL COMPONENTS INTO THEIR CURRICULA. HOWEVER, MANY NON-COMPUTING FACULTY ARE NOT PREPARED TO TEACH THE COMPUTING CONCEPTS THAT UNDERLIE THE COMPUTATIONAL TECHNIQUES THAT THEIR STUDENTS MUST MASTER. THIS PROJECT WILL SUPPORT NON-COMPUTING FACULTY WHO ARE TEACHING COMPUTING CONCEPTS BY DEVELOPING A CURATED SET OF VIDEOS THAT PROVIDES THE CONTENT NEEDED FOR STUDENTS TO LEARN BASIC COMPUTING CONCEPTS. THE INFUSION OF FOUNDATIONAL COMPUTING CONCEPTS INTO NON-COMPUTING COURSES WILL INCREASE BOTH THE NUMBER AND DIVERSITY OF STUDENTS WHO ARE PREPARED TO UTILIZE COMPUTATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES WHEN THEY ENTER THE WORKFORCE. THIS PROJECT?S GOALS ARE TO (1) EXPAND AND STRENGTHEN THE OCCTIVE VIDEO LIBRARY (ONLINE COMPUTING-CONCEPTS TOOLKIT OF INTERDISCIPLINARY VIDEOS FOR EDUCATION), DESIGNED TO INTRODUCE FOUNDATIONAL COMPUTING CONCEPTS IN NON-CS COURSES, (2) BROADLY DISSEMINATE OCCTIVE FOR USE BY NON-CS FACULTY AND PEER TUTORS, AND (3) ASSESS THE IMPACT OF OCCTIVE USE ON STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND PEER TUTORS. THE EXPANSION AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE OCCTIVE LIBRARY WILL BE INFORMED BY BEST PRACTICES IN INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO DESIGN. YET MANY ORGANIZATIONS ARE NOT ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THESE DEVELOPMENTS BECAUSE THEY OFTEN LACK APPROPRIATE STAFFING TO WRESTLE WITH COMPLEX DATA SCIENCE PROBLEMS. MEANWHILE, AS STUDENTS INCREASINGLY GRAVITATE TOWARD DATA SCIENCE PROGRAMS, MUCH OF THEIR COURSE-BASED PROBLEM SOLVING EXPERIENCE FOCUSES ON CLEAN PROBLEMS WITH SIMPLE DATA SETS. THIS LEAVES THEM UNPREPARED FOR THE REALITY OF THE DATA SCIENCE APPLICATIONS THEY WILL FACE IN PROFESSIONAL SETTINGS. THIS PROJECT ADDRESSES BOTH ISSUES BY DEPLOYING TEAMS OF DATA SCIENCE STUDENTS TO ASSIST LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS, THEREBY INCREASING THE LONG-TERM CAPACITY OF THE DATA SCIENCE WORKFORCE. THIS IS A MULTIFACETED PROJECT THAT WILL PROVIDE IMMEDIATE IMPACT TO LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS AND LONG-TERM BENEFIT FOR STUDENTS THROUGH VALUABLE HANDS-ON DATA SCIENCE EXPERIENCE. THERE ARE TWO MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT. FIRST, DATA SCIENCE WAV TEAMS OF FOUR SPECIALLY-TRAINED UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS WILL BE DEPLOYED TO COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS TO WRANGLE, ANALYZE, AND VISUALIZE THEIR DATA. SECOND, THIS PROJECT WILL OFFER SUMMER FACULTY DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS DESIGNED TO HELP NEW INSTRUCTORS, ESPECIALLY THOSE AT COMMUNITY COLLEGES, TEACH DATA SCIENCE AT THEIR INSTITUTIONS. CURRICULAR INNOVATIONS THAT BRING EXPERIENTIAL DATA SCIENCE LEARNING INTO THE CURRICULUM WILL LEAD TO SUSTAINED IMPACT AT THE PARTNERING ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS AND IN THE LARGER PIONEER VALLEY REGION. THIS PROPOSAL IS DIVERSE ACROSS BOTH INSTITUTIONS AND STUDENT POPULATIONS. IT COMPRISES ONE MAJOR RESEARCH UNIVERSITY (THE UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS, AMHERST), FOUR LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGES (AMHERST, HAMPSHIRE, MOUNT HOLYOKE, AND SMITH), AND THREE LOCAL COMMUNITY COLLEGES (GREENFIELD, HOLYOKE, AND SPRINGFIELD TECHNICAL). THE INCLUSION OF TWO WOMEN'S COLLEGES (SMITH AND MOUNT HOLYOKE) AND TWO HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTIONS (HOLYOKE AND SPRINGFIELD TECHNICAL) WILL HELP ENSURE THAT A DIVERSE STUDENT POPULATION IS ENGAGED IN THE PROJECT. IN THE PAST YEAR WE TRAINED AN MIT UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT MS. AFURA TAYLOR TO WORK ON THE XMM-NEWTON SGR B2 DATASET. AFURA DID AN EXCELLENT WORK REDUCING XMM DATA EXTRACTING SPECTRUM AND LIGHT CURVES FROM THE TARGET. SHE ALSO PERFORMED IMAGE ANALYSIS TO UNDERSTAND THE MORPHOLOGY OF THE INTERESTED SOURCE. SPECTRAL FITTING TIMING ANALYSIS AND IMAGE ANALYSIS ON THE XMM-NEWTON DATASET WERE ALL COMPLETED SO FAR. AFURA MADE A POSTER PRESENTATION REPORTING HER ANALYSIS RESULTS ON THIS PROJECT AT THE #235 AAS IN HONOLULU HAWAII IN JANUARY 2020 WHICH IS GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT FOR AN UNDERGRADUATE. WE HAVE A SIMULTANEOUS 150 KS NUSTAR OBSERVATION ON SGR B2 OBTAINED FROM A SEPARATE PROPOSAL. JOINT XMM AND NUSTAR ANALYSIS IS THE MOST POWERFUL TOOL FOR THIS ANALYSIS. THEREFORE OUR TEAM ALSO REDUCED THE NUSTAR DATA AND PERFORMED SPECTRAL AND IMAGING STUDY. BY FEBRUARY 2020 WE HAVE FINISHED JOINT ANALYSIS OF NUSTAR AND XMM-NEWTON DATA. BY COMPARING WITH ARCHIVAL DATA WE CONCLUDE THAT AFTER TWO DECADES OF DECAYING SGR B2 S X-RAY EMISSION PROBABLY HAS ENTERED A CONSTANT BASE LEVEL EMISSION STAGE JUST AS WHAT WE PREDICTED IN THE ORIGINAL PROPOSAL. THIS CONSTANT EMISSION LEVEL IS MOST LIKELY DUE TO LOW-ENERGY COSMIC-RAY CONTRIBUTION. THUS WE CAN USE SGR B2 CLOUD AS A PROBE FOR MEV-GEV CHARGED PARTICLES IN THE GALACTIC CENTER. OUR NEXT STEP IS TO WRITE A PAPER REPORTING ALL OUR FINDINGS FOR THIS PROJECT WITH A TITLE OF FIRST CONSTRAINTS ON THE GALACTIC CENTER MEV-GEV COSMIC-RAYS USING REMAINING X-RAY EMISSION FROM SGR B2 . UNDERGRADUATES INVOLVED IN THIS PROJECT WILL BE MAJOR AUTHORS FOR THIS PAPER. THE SCIENCE PI SHUO ZHANG HAD A TRANSITION TIME FROM A POSTDOC AT MIT TO AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AT BARD COLLEGE. THEREFORE THIS PROJECT HAS TO BE TRANSFERRED FROM MIT TO BARD COLLEGE. THE LAST PHRASE OF THE PROJECT WILL TAKE PLACE AT BARD COLLEGE. OUR PLAN IS TO FOCUS ON WRITING THE DRAFT DURING JUNE TO AUGUST 2020 AND SUBMIT THE PAPER TO THE ASTROPHYSICAL JOURNAL IN FALL 2020. WE THEREFORE APPRECIATE CONTINUING SUPPORT TO THIS PROJECT WHICH WILL ALLOW US TO PUBLISH THIS RESULT.

THIS CONFERENCE IS THE TENTH BIENNIAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE SOCIETY FOR MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTATION IN MUSIC, HELD ON ALTERNATING SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC. MATHEMATICIANS AND MUSICIANS SHARE LONGSTANDING INTERESTS IN CLASSIFICATION, ACOUSTICS, SYMMETRY, TRANSFORMATION, AND STRUCTURE; MCM PROVIDES A PRIMARY INTERNATIONAL FORUM WHERE THESE QUESTIONS ARE ADDRESSED USING MODERN MATHEMATICAL TOOLS AND ALSO ADVANCES RESEARCH AT THE INTERFACE OF MATHEMATICS, COMPUTATION, AND MUSIC THEORY, FOCUSING ON MATHEMATICALLY RIGOROUS MODELS OF MUSICAL STRUCTURE, PERCEPTION, AND CREATIVITY.
