HOWEVER THERE IS CURRENTLY NO CONSOLIDATED SOURCE OF TECHNICAL SILVICULTURAL GUIDANCE TARGETED TO AN AUDIENCE OF PROFESSIONAL SUGARBUSH MANAGERS. THIS PROJECT BRINGS TOGETHER AN EXCEPTIONAL TEAM OF LEADING YOUNG SILVICULTURISTS AND MAPLE RESEARCHERS SUPPORTED BY AN ADVISORY BOARD OF EXPERIENCED ACADEMICS AND INDUSTRY EXPERTS TO FILL THAT NEED. THROUGH A SERIES OF LINKED ACTIVITIES THIS PROJECT WILL STRENGTHEN THE SCIENTIFIC UNDERPINNINGS OF SUGARBUSH MANAGEMENT IN THE UNITED STATES AND DRIVE THE CONTINUED PROFESSIONALIZATION OF THE MAPLE INDUSTRY. SPECIFICALLY WE WILL 1 SYNTHESIZE EXISTING SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE ON SUGARBUSH SILVICULTURE AND CONSOLIDATE INFORMAL PRODUCER AND MANAGER KNOWLEDGE 2 DESIGN AND EXECUTE ORIGINAL MODELBASED ANALYTICAL RESEARCH TO ADDRESS IDENTIFIED KNOWLEDGE GAPS 3 PRODUCE AN ACCESSIBLE AUTHORITATIVE HANDBOOK OF SUGARBUSH SILVICULTURE AND 4 PLAN AND DELIVER AN EXTENSIVE OUTREACH AND TRAINING CAMPAIGN FOR MAPLE PRODUCERS SUGARBUSH MANAGERS AND PROFESSIONAL FORESTERS SO THAT THE BENEFITS OF THIS PROJECT ARE EQUITABLY AND IMPACTFULLY DISTRIBUTED ACROSS THE MAPLE INDUSTRY. | Department of Agriculture | MANY MAPLE SYRUP PRODUCERS FACE DIFFICULT DECISIONS IN MANAGING OLDER SUGARBUSHES WITH TREES IN DECLINING HEALTH. PRODUCERS ARE RELUCTANT TO STOP TAPPING THESE LARGE, MATURE TREES THAT COULD THEORETICALLY PRODUCE A LOT OF SAP, BUT THEY RECOGNIZE THAT THESE TREES CAN ALSO BE THE SOURCE OF SIGNIFICANT VACUUM LEAKS IN TUBING SYSTEMS, REDUCING YIELD ACROSS THE ENTIRE SYSTEM. PRODUCERS HAVE FEW TOOLS AVAILABLE TO THEM TO HELP THEM NAVIGATE THESE TRADEOFFS. THIS PROJECT WILL DEVELOP A COMPREHENSIVE PHOTO GUIDE ILLUSTRATING A FOUR-POINT RATING SYSTEM THAT PRODUCERS CAN USE TO ASSESS CROWN HEALTH AND MAKE BETTER INFORMED MANAGEMENT DECISIONS. WE WILL DESIGNATE 120 TREES TO INTENSIVELY MEASURE AND MONITOR, EVENLY DISTRIBUTED ACROSS THE FOUR CROWN HEALTH CATEGORIES AND TWO RESEARCH SITES. WE WILL MEASURE A SET OF BIOMETRIC ATTRIBUTES FOR EACH SUBJECT TREE AND ITS NEIGHBORS AND WILL COLLECT SAP FROM EACH TREE IN INDIVIDUAL CANNISTERS UNDER HIGH VACUUM AND QUANTIFY THE TOTAL SUGAR YIELD OVER A THREE-YEAR PERIOD. THIS DATA WILL ALLOW US TO CORRELATE CROWN HEALTH TO SYRUP YIELD AND APPLY MORE ADVANCED METHODS TO DEVELOP AN EMPIRICAL MULTI-FACTOR YIELD MODEL. THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE MAPLE SYRUP PRODUCERS WITH A NEW TOOL TO HELP STEER TAPPING AND SUGARBUSH MANAGEMENT DECISIONS, LEADING TO INCREASED PRODUCTION AND PROFITABILITY ACROSS THE INDUSTRY.THIS PROJECT WILL UNFOLD OVER SIX STAGES: (1) DEVELOPMENT OF A FOUR-POINT RATING SCALE FOR CATEGORIZING MAPLE TREES BYCROWN HEALTH (2) DESIGNATION OF 120 RESEARCH SUBJECT TREES, EVENLY DISTRIBUTED ACROSS TWO RESEARCH SITES AND THE FOUR CROWN HEALTH CATEGORIES (3) MEASUREMENT AND PHOTO DOCUMENTATION OF EACH SUBJECT TREE, ITS STEM AND CROWNATTRIBUTES, AND ITS NEIGHBORHOOD COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT (4) MEASUREMENT OF SAP AND SUGAR YIELDS FROM EACHSUBJECT TREE OVER THREE CONSECUTIVE SUGARING SEASONS (5) DATA ANALYSIS AND QUANTITATIVE MODELING AND (6)DISSEMINATION OF FINDINGS TO PRODUCERS AND MANAGERS THROUGH PUBLICATIONS, CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS, AN IN-PERSONWORKSHOP, AND INTERACTIVE WEBSITE.THIS PROJECT WILL DIRECTLY ADVANCE THE STATE OF APPLIED MAPLE RESEARCH AND DISSEMINATE THE RESULTS OF THAT WORK TOMAPLE PRODUCERS ACROSS THE INDUSTRY. UPON COMPLETION OF THIS STUDY, PRODUCERS WILL HAVE BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THEAMOUNT OF SAP EXPECTED FROM TREES IN VARIOUS STATES OF CROWN HEALTH DECLINE AND WILL HAVE A CLEARER UNDERSTANDING OF THE BIOLOGICAL FACTORS THAT AFFECT SAP AND SUGAR YIELD. PRODUCERS WILL BE BETTER EQUIPPED TO EVALUATE AND SUCCESSFULLY EXECUTE SUGARBUSH MANAGEMENT DECISIONS THAT PROMOTE THE LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY OF MAPLE FORESTS AND THE MAPLE INDUSTRY. PARADISE WILL STRENGTHEN THE ABILITY OF THESE INSTITUTIONS TO CONDUCT INNOVATIVE RESEARCH AND FORM MEANINGFUL COLLABORATIONS DESPITE THEIR GEOGRAPHIC ISOLATION. THE GOALS OF PARADISE INCLUDE STRENGTHENING ADMINISTRATIVE INFRASTRUCTURE, PROVIDING INCENTIVES FOR FACULTY AND STUDENT RESEARCH, AND DEVELOPING TRAINING RESOURCES TO ENHANCE COLLABORATION BETWEEN ACADEMIA AND INDUSTRY. SPECIFICALLY WE WILL 1 SYNTHESIZE EXISTING SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE ON SUGARBUSH SILVICULTURE AND CONSOLIDATE INFORMAL PRODUCER AND MANAGER KNOWLEDGE 2 DESIGN AND EXECUTE ORIGINAL MODELBASED ANALYTICAL RESEARCH TO ADDRESS IDENTIFIED KNOWLEDGE GAPS 3 PRODUCE AN ACCESSIBLE AUTHORITATIVE HANDBOOK OF SUGARBUSH SILVICULTURE AND 4 PLAN AND DELIVER AN EXTENSIVE OUTREACH AND TRAINING CAMPAIGN FOR MAPLE PRODUCERS SUGARBUSH MANAGERS AND PROFESSIONAL FORESTERS SO THAT THE BENEFITS OF THIS PROJECT ARE EQUITABLY AND IMPACTFULLY DISTRIBUTED ACROSS THE MAPLE INDUSTRY. BY STRENGTHENING THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN MAPLE PRODUCERS AND PROFESSIONAL FORESTERS AND REPOSITIONING SILVICULTURE AS AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT OF MODERN SUGARBUSH MANAGEMENT THIS PROJECT WILL DELIVER SUBSTANTIAL AND LASTING VALUE TO MAPLE PRODUCERS OF ALL SIZES AND ACROSS THE ENTIRE GEOGRAPHY OF THE INDUSTRY

MANY MAPLE SYRUP PRODUCERS FACE DIFFICULT DECISIONS IN MANAGING OLDER SUGARBUSHES WITH TREES IN DECLINING HEALTH. PRODUCERS ARE RELUCTANT TO STOP TAPPING THESE LARGE, MATURE TREES THAT COULD THEORETICALLY PRODUCE A LOT OF SAP, BUT THEY RECOGNIZE THAT THESE TREES CAN ALSO BE THE SOURCE OF SIGNIFICANT VACUUM LEAKS IN TUBING SYSTEMS, REDUCING YIELD ACROSS THE ENTIRE SYSTEM. PRODUCERS HAVE FEW TOOLS AVAILABLE TO THEM TO HELP THEM NAVIGATE THESE TRADEOFFS. THIS PROJECT WILL DEVELOP A COMPREHENSIVE PHOTO GUIDE ILLUSTRATING A FOUR-POINT RATING SYSTEM THAT PRODUCERS CAN USE TO ASSESS CROWN HEALTH AND MAKE BETTER INFORMED MANAGEMENT DECISIONS. WE WILL DESIGNATE 120 TREES TO INTENSIVELY MEASURE AND MONITOR, EVENLY DISTRIBUTED ACROSS THE FOUR CROWN HEALTH CATEGORIES AND TWO RESEARCH SITES. WE WILL MEASURE A SET OF BIOMETRIC ATTRIBUTES FOR EACH SUBJECT TREE AND ITS NEIGHBORS AND WILL COLLECT SAP FROM EACH TREE IN INDIVIDUAL CANNISTERS UNDER HIGH VACUUM AND QUANTIFY THE TOTAL SUGAR YIELD OVER A THREE-YEAR PERIOD. THIS DATA WILL ALLOW US TO CORRELATE CROWN HEALTH TO SYRUP YIELD AND APPLY MORE ADVANCED METHODS TO DEVELOP AN EMPIRICAL MULTI-FACTOR YIELD MODEL. THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE MAPLE SYRUP PRODUCERS WITH A NEW TOOL TO HELP STEER TAPPING AND SUGARBUSH MANAGEMENT DECISIONS, LEADING TO INCREASED PRODUCTION AND PROFITABILITY ACROSS THE INDUSTRY.THIS PROJECT WILL UNFOLD OVER SIX STAGES: (1) DEVELOPMENT OF A FOUR-POINT RATING SCALE FOR CATEGORIZING MAPLE TREES BYCROWN HEALTH (2) DESIGNATION OF 120 RESEARCH SUBJECT TREES, EVENLY DISTRIBUTED ACROSS TWO RESEARCH SITES AND THE FOUR CROWN HEALTH CATEGORIES (3) MEASUREMENT AND PHOTO DOCUMENTATION OF EACH SUBJECT TREE, ITS STEM AND CROWNATTRIBUTES, AND ITS NEIGHBORHOOD COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT (4) MEASUREMENT OF SAP AND SUGAR YIELDS FROM EACHSUBJECT TREE OVER THREE CONSECUTIVE SUGARING SEASONS (5) DATA ANALYSIS AND QUANTITATIVE MODELING AND (6)DISSEMINATION OF FINDINGS TO PRODUCERS AND MANAGERS THROUGH PUBLICATIONS, CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS, AN IN-PERSONWORKSHOP, AND INTERACTIVE WEBSITE.THIS PROJECT WILL DIRECTLY ADVANCE THE STATE OF APPLIED MAPLE RESEARCH AND DISSEMINATE THE RESULTS OF THAT WORK TOMAPLE PRODUCERS ACROSS THE INDUSTRY. UPON COMPLETION OF THIS STUDY, PRODUCERS WILL HAVE BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THEAMOUNT OF SAP EXPECTED FROM TREES IN VARIOUS STATES OF CROWN HEALTH DECLINE AND WILL HAVE A CLEARER UNDERSTANDING OF THE BIOLOGICAL FACTORS THAT AFFECT SAP AND SUGAR YIELD. PRODUCERS WILL BE BETTER EQUIPPED TO EVALUATE AND SUCCESSFULLY EXECUTE SUGARBUSH MANAGEMENT DECISIONS THAT PROMOTE THE LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY OF MAPLE FORESTS AND THE MAPLE INDUSTRY. THIS MAY ENCOURAGE MORE FOREST MANAGEMENT OF SUGARBUSHES IF THE RESULTS SUGGEST THAT TREES WITH POOR CROWN HEALTH ARE NOT WORTH KEEPING AS PART OF THEIR ACTIVE SUGARBUSH. PRODUCERS MAY REALIZE THE IMPACT THAT CROWN HEALTH HAS ON YIELD AND TAKE STEPS TO MAXIMIZE THE HEALTH OF THEIR TREES.

THESE COMMUNITIES, REPRESENTED BY HAWAI?I PACIFIC UNIVERSITY, PAUL SMITH?S COLLEGE (IN THE ADIRONDACKS, NY), AND THE UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS, ARE ON THE FRONT LINES OF CRITICAL ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IMPACTING PUBLIC HEALTH, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AND BIODIVERSITY LOSS. PARADISE WILL STRENGTHEN THE ABILITY OF THESE INSTITUTIONS TO CONDUCT INNOVATIVE RESEARCH AND FORM MEANINGFUL COLLABORATIONS DESPITE THEIR GEOGRAPHIC ISOLATION. BY INCREASING RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CAPACITY, THESE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES WILL CONTRIBUTE TO SOLVING PRESSING ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS AND SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC GROWTH IN THEIR REGIONS. THIS PROJECT ENHANCES RESEARCH CAPACITY AND FOSTERS COLLABORATION AMONG GEOGRAPHICALLY ISOLATED INSTITUTIONS, OFTEN REFERRED TO AS ?ISLANDED INSTITUTIONS,? THROUGH TARGETED INVESTMENT AND STRATEGIC INITIATIVES. THESE COMMUNITIES FACE PHYSICAL ISOLATION AND SIGNIFICANT ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES AFFECTING PUBLIC HEALTH, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AND BIODIVERSITY. THE PROJECT CULTIVATES PARTNERSHIPS FOCUSED ON ENVIRONMENTAL AND SUSTAINABILITY INNOVATION ACROSS THREE INSTITUTIONS: HAWAI?I PACIFIC UNIVERSITY (HPU), THE UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS (UVI), AND PAUL SMITH?S COLLEGE (PSC). PARADISE WILL ENABLE THE COHORT TO MAKE STRATEGIC INVESTMENTS IN INTERNAL CAPACITY, FACILITATE COLLABORATIVE EXCHANGES, AND ESTABLISH A PROFESSIONAL LEARNING NETWORK, THEREBY FOSTERING A CULTURE OF CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT AND INNOVATION. THE GOALS OF PARADISE INCLUDE STRENGTHENING ADMINISTRATIVE INFRASTRUCTURE, PROVIDING INCENTIVES FOR FACULTY AND STUDENT RESEARCH, AND DEVELOPING TRAINING RESOURCES TO ENHANCE COLLABORATION BETWEEN ACADEMIA AND INDUSTRY. EACH INSTITUTION WILL TAILOR ITS APPROACH TO ALIGN WITH ITS UNIQUE STRENGTHS AND CHALLENGES. HPU WILL ENHANCE TECH TRANSFER CAPABILITIES AND ALIGN RESEARCH WITH INDUSTRY NEEDS IN ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING. PSC WILL RESTRUCTURE RESEARCH ADMINISTRATION TO SUPPORT ADVANCEMENTS IN NATURAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION AND FORESTRY. UVI WILL ESTABLISH ROLES TO FOSTER COMMUNITY-INDUSTRY RELATIONS AND ADDRESS ENVIRONMENTAL LEGACIES FROM PAST INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES. BY LEVERAGING THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL EXPERTISE, CULTURAL CONNECTIONS, AND DIVERSE RESOURCES, THE PARADISE PARTNERSHIP WILL ADDRESS ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES WITHIN ISLANDED COMMUNITIES, PROMOTE ECONOMIC GROWTH, AND INTEGRATE INDIGENOUS PERSPECTIVES INTO NATIONAL RESEARCH AGENDAS. THIS HOLISTIC APPROACH ENHANCES THE RESEARCH CAPACITIES OF THE PARTNERING INSTITUTIONS, ENABLING THEM TO PROVIDE VALUABLE INSIGHTS AND SOLUTIONS TO PRESSING ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AT BOTH REGIONAL AND NATIONAL LEVELS. THE MWEE WILL FOCUS ON DEEP LEARNING WITH A SMALL COHORT OF SIX SCHOOL DISTRICTS, PARTNER HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS, AND APPROXIMATELY 200 STUDENTS IN RURAL, LOW-INCOME, SOCIO-ECONOMICALLY DISTRESSED COMMUNITIES IN THE LAKE ONTARIO WATERSHED.
