FOUNDED IN 1947, THE GEORGE EASTMAN MUSEUM IS THE WORLD'S OLDEST (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)PHOTOGRAPHY MUSEUM AND ONE OF THE FOREMOST FILM ARCHIVES IN THE UNITED STATES. THE MUSEUM IS LOCATED ON THE HISTORIC ESTATE OF ENTREPRENEUR AND PHILANTHORPIST GEORGE EASTMAN, THE PIONEER OF POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY AND A LEADER IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MOTION PICUTRE FILM. ITS HOLDINGS COMPRISE MORE THAN 400,000 PHOTOGRAPHS; 28,000 MOTION PICTURE FILMS; THE WORLD'S PREEMINENT COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHIC AND CINEMATOGRAPHIC TECHNOLOGY; ONE OF THE LEADING LIBRARIES OF BOOKS RELATED TO PHOTOGRAPHY AND CINEMA; AND EXTENSIVE HOLDINGS OF DOCUMENTS AND OTHER OBJECTS RELATED TO GEORGE EASTMAN. AS A RESEARCH AND TEACHING INSTITUTION, THE MUSEUM HAS AN ACTIVE PUBLISHING PROGRAM AND HAS MADE CRITICAL CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE FIELDS OF FILM PRESERVATION AND PHOTOGRAPHIC CONSERVATION.

BUILDING UPON COLLECTION ACTIVITIES SUPPORTED BY A 2020 MUSEUMS FOR AMERICA AWARD, STAFF WILL CONSERVE THE FILMS TO ADDRESS DETERIORATION. THE MUSEUM WILL HIRE TWO FULL-TIME FILM SPECIALISTS TO WORK WITH STAFF TO REPAIR, CLEAN, DOCUMENT, AND STABILIZE THE FILMS. THE STEM-FOCUSED EXHIBITION TRACING THE EVOLUTION OF PHOTOGRAPHIC TECHNOLOGY WILL INTEGRATE HISTORIC OBJECTS FROM THE MUSEUM’S COLLECTION. MUSEUM STAFF WILL PRODUCE AN AUDIO TOUR AND WORK WITH A TECHNOLOGY CONSULTANT TO DEVELOP INTERACTIVE DIGITAL ACTIVITIES THAT UTILIZE MOBILE APPLICATIONS. BUILDING ON A PREVIOUS IMLS-FUNDED DIGITIZATION PROJECT, THE MUSEUM WILL REFORMAT THE RECORDINGS, WHICH CURRENTLY REQUIRE TECHNOLOGICALLY OBSOLETE PLAYBACK EQUIPMENT TO ACCESS, TO OPEN-SOURCE DIGITAL FORMATS ACCESSIBLE THROUGH THE MUSEUM’S WEBSITE. THE PROJECT WILL SUPPORT A TEMPORARY FULL-TIME PROJECT PROCESSING ARCHIVIST. THE DIGITIZATION OF THE RECORDINGS WILL IMPROVE LONG-TERM PRESERVATION BY MINIMIZING HANDLING AND WILL ALLOW THE MUSEUM TO PROVIDE FREE ONLINE ACCESS FOR THE BENEFIT RESEARCHERS, HISTORIANS, ENTHUSIASTS, AND THE PUBLIC THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.

ALONG WITH COMPREHENSIVE AND ACCURATE CATALOG RECORDS, THE PLAN WILL CREATE APPROXIMATELY 12,100 DIGITAL OBJECT FILES, CONSISTING OF A SET OF EIGHT HIGH-RESOLUTION DIGITAL IMAGES TO FACILITATE ACCESS FOR SCHOLARLY RESEARCH. A VARIETY OF PUBLIC PROGRAMS, INCLUDING SIMULCAST AND RECORDED WEBINARS, WILL INFORM AND RAISE AWARENESS OF THE MUSEUM STAFF, MEMBERS, AND ONSITE AND VIRTUAL AUDIENCES ABOUT THE PROJECT'S PROGRESS.

A TOTAL OF 1,285 INDIAN AND PAKISTANI FILM PRINTS WERE IN IMMINENT DANGER OF DESTRUCTION WHEN THE EASTMAN MUSEUM RECOVERED THEM FROM AN ABANDONED MULTIPLEX IN CALIFORNIA IN 2014, FROM THE BRITISH FILM INSTITUTE NATIONAL ARCHIVE IN 2016, AND FROM A SHUTTERED CINEMA IN HOUSTON, TEXAS IN 2017. THE MUSEUM NOW HOLDS THE LARGEST COLLECTION OF SOUTH ASIAN FILMS HELD OUTSIDE OF THE INDIAN SUBCONTINENT REPRESENTING BOLLYWOOD, LOLLYWOOD, MALAYALAM, PUNJABI, TAMIL AND TELUGU PRODUCTIONS. THIS PROJECT ENTAILS CURSORY FILM CLEANING, PLACING EACH REEL OF FILM ONTO A NEW CORE, AND PLACING EACH REEL INTO A NEW CAN. FILMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION WILL BE PUBLISHED IN THE MUSEUM?S ONLINE CATALOG OF FILM RECORDS TO ADVANCE THE WORK OF RESEARCHERS, SCHOLARS, AND ARCHIVISTS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. ACCESS TO PROJECTABLE PRINTS WILL BE PROVIDED THROUGH ARCHIVAL SCREENINGS AND FILM LOANS.

THESE NEW FORMATS WILL BE ACCESSIBLE THROUGH THE MUSEUM'S WEBSITE AND PLAYABLE ON ANY COMPUTER OR MOBILE DEVICE. SITE VISITORS WILL BE ENCOURAGED TO CREATE TRANSCRIPTIONS OF THE RECORDINGS USING A FREE, OPEN SOURCE INTERACTIVE COMMUNITY TRANSCRIPTION TOOL.
