THE CHECKLIST OF 130 ARTWORKS FROM THE 19TH TO EARLY 20TH CENTURY BY NATIVE AND NON-NATIVE ARTISTS INCLUDES TEXTILES, BASKETS, PAINTINGS, POTTERY, SCULPTURE, BEADWORK, SADDLES, AND PRINTS. THIS MAJOR ART EXHIBITION HOLDS HISTORIC ARTWORK ACCOUNTABLE, ENCOURAGES DEEPER EXPLORATION OF A FAMILIAR TOPIC, AND CELEBRATES THE RICH CULTURES THAT REFLECT THE COMPLEXITY OF THE AMERICAN WEST. EXHIBITION DEVELOPMENT IS COLLABORATIVE AND INTERDISCIPLINARY. DIRECTED BY CO-CURATORS MINDY N. BESAW AND JAMI C. POWELL (OSAGE), A CURATORIAL ADVISORY COUNCIL PROVIDED GUIDANCE TO REFINE THE EXHIBITION?S PARAMETERS, DEFINE THEMES, AND INFORM THE CHECKLIST. CRYSTAL BRIDGES MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART WILL DEEPEN ITS ENGAGEMENT WITH LOCAL HISPANIC/LATINO COMMUNITIES BY CONDUCTING AUDIENCE RESEARCH, TESTING NEW METHODOLOGIES, AND DEVELOPING AN INSTITUTION-WIDE ACTION PLAN. WORKING WITH A CONSULTING EVALUATOR, THE MUSEUM WILL CONVENE FOUR VISITOR PANELS COMPRISED OF MEMBERS OF THE HISPANIC/LATINO COMMUNITY, SOME WHO HAVE VISITED THE MUSEUM AND SOME WHO HAVE NOT, TO CRITIQUE ENGAGEMENT STRATEGIES, INCLUDING THEMATIC GALLERY INSTALLATIONS, MUSEUM MARKETING MESSAGES, AND BILINGUAL LABEL FORMATS. THE MUSEUM WILL CONSULT WITH OTHER MUSEUMS TO SUPPORT THE PROTOTYPING AND TESTING OF NEW DIGITAL LABEL TECHNOLOGY FOR THE DELIVERY OF CONTENT IN AN ART MUSEUM SETTING. A MULTI-DEPARTMENTAL TEAM WILL REVIEW PROJECT FINDINGS TO MAKE SHORT-TERM CHANGES AND DEVELOP AN INSTITUTION-WIDE PLAN FOR THE FUTURE.

THIS EXHIBITION RESITUATES THE VISUAL LEGACIES OF THE AMERICAN WEST BY PRIORITIZING NATIVE AMERICAN SELF-REPRESENTATION AND ELEVATING OVERLOOKED ART BY NATIVE AMERICAN ARTISTS, WHILE, AT THE SAME TIME RECKONING WITH THE VISUAL LEGACIES OF EUROPEAN-AMERICAN ARTWORKS.
