22AS00131 (FY2022 AMERICAN BATTLEFIELD PROTECTION PROGRAM: PRESERVATION PLANNING GRANTS): THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE S AMERICAN BATTLEFIELD PROTECTION PROGRAM (NPS ABPP) CONSISTS OF FOUR GRANT PROGRAMS BATTLEFIELD INTERPRETATION GRANTS, BATTLEFIELD LAND ACQUISITION GRANTS, BATTLEFIELD RESTORATION GRANTS, AND PRESERVATION PLANNING GRANTS (PPG). THE PPG PROGRAM PROVIDES FEDERAL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO STATE, LOCAL AND TRIBAL GOVERNMENTS, OTHER PUBLIC ENTITIES, EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, AND PRIVATE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS TO IDENTIFY, EVALUATE, INTERPRET, AND PROTECT HISTORIC BATTLEFIELDS AND SITES ASSOCIATED WITH ARMED CONFLICTS ON AMERICAN SOIL THROUGH NON-ACQUISITION PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES. THE CAPITAL REGION LAND CONSERVANCY PROJECT, TITLED INVESTIGATING THE CORE BATTLEFIELD OF NEW MARKET HEIGHTS, WILL INVESTIGATE THE OVERLAPPING PORTION OF THE CIVIL WAR BATTLEFIELDS OF DEEP BOTTOM I (JULY, 1864), DEEP BOTTOM II (AUGUST, 1864), AND CHAFFINS FARM NEW MARKET HEIGHTS (SEPTEMBER, 1864) AT FOUR MILE CREEK FARM CONDUCT THE INVESTIGATION USING A LIMITED ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE SURVEY, INCLUDING SHOVEL TESTS AND METAL DETECTION, AND USE THE RESULTS TO HELP PRODUCE A LAND MANAGEMENT PLAN.
