THIS PROJECT EXPECTS TO REMOVE UP TO 25 ABANDONED AND DERELICT VESSELS AND AN ESTIMATED 2,500 PIECES OF DERELICT FISHING GEAR USING SIDE-SCAN SONAR AND GRAPPLES. NEW INDUSTRY PARTNERS WILL BE TRAINED TO CONDUCT SCIENTIFIC GRADE SURVEYS USING SIDE SCAN SONAR TO IDENTIFY AND PRIORITIZE DERELICT FISHING GEAR FOR REMOVAL. A STUDENT TRAINING PRACTICUM WILL BE ADMINISTERED TO EDUCATE STUDENTS AND PREPARE THEM FOR PARTNERSHIP WITH INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS TO SERVE AS AMBASSADORS TO THE CRABBING INDUSTRY. IN RECENT DECADES, A CONSIDERABLE IMPROVEMENT IN THE QUALITY OF POLICING IN THE UNITED STATES AND OTHER DEVELOPED COUNTRIES HAS BEEN ACHIEVED. POLICE IN THE 21ST CENTURY ARE MORE SUCCESSFUL IN FIGHTING CRIME, BETTER EDUCATED, MORE PROFESSIONAL, AND LESS LIKELY TO ENGAGE IN MISCONDUCT COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS GENERATION OF OFFICERS. DESPITE THE BEHAVIORAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENTS IN POLICING THAT WE HAVE SEEN IN THIS CENTURY, POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS ARE STILL STRAINED DUE TO UNFAIR, DISCRIMINATORY, AND DISRESPECTFUL POLICE PRACTICES. POLICING IS IN THE SPOTLIGHT FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD, AND THE PUBLIC’S EXPECTATIONS REGARDING POLICE ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY ARE HIGHER THAN EVER. STOCKTON UNIVERSITY TOGETHER WITH ITS PARTNERS, THE ATLANTIC CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT (ACPD) AND THE PLEASANTVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT (PPD) WILL CONDUCT A RIGOROUS AND SYSTEMATIC RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL IN ATLANTIC CITY AND PLEASANTVILLE CITY, NEW JERSEY TO EVALUATE WHETHER INCORPORATING ELEMENTS OF PROCEDURAL JUSTICE INTO TRAFFIC STOPS AND PROVIDING BODY-WORN CAMERA FOOTAGE ACCESS TO CITIZENS STOPPED BY THE POLICE ENHANCE CITIZENS’ TRUST IN POLICE, STIMULATE COMPLIANCE, AND CHANGE THE ATTITUDES OF CITIZENS TOWARDS POLICE. DRIVERS AND PEDESTRIANS WHO ARE STOPPED BY THE ACPD OFFICERS FOR TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS WILL BE RANDOMLY ASSIGNED TO EITHER THE CONTROL OR THE TREATMENT GROUP. THE RANDOMIZATION PROCESS WILL ASSIGN A TOTAL OF 1100 DRIVERS AND PEDESTRIANS TO THE TREATMENT GROUP (ENHANCED PROCEDURAL JUSTICE PROTOCOL), AND 900 DRIVERS AND PEDESTRIANS TO THE CONTROL GROUP (TYPICAL ENCOUNTER WITHOUT ANY INTERVENTION). A TOTAL OF 2000 TRAFFIC STOPS WILL BE CONDUCTED BY THE PARTNER AGENCIES. THE SELECTION OF EXPERIMENTAL/CONTROL CONDITIONS WILL BE GUIDED BY A RANDOM DRAWING FROM A SHUFFLED PACK OF INDEX CARDS. THE ENHANCED STRATEGY WILL EXTEND THE EXISTING PROCEDURAL JUSTICE PRACTICES BY OFFERING DATA EVIDENCE TO JUSTIFY STOPS, MAKING VIDEO EVIDENCE ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC, AND INCORPORATING A STATEMENT TO EXISTING TRAFFIC STOP PROTOCOLS TO INFORM CITIZENS THAT THEIR INTERACTION IS BEING RECORDED AND CAN BE VIEWED THROUGH A WEBSITE. FOLLOWING THE POLICE-CITIZEN ENCOUNTER, DRIVERS WILL BE ASKED WHETHER THEY ARE WILLING TO VOLUNTEER TO ANSWER A BRIEF QUESTIONNAIRE (APPROXIMATELY THIRTY-LIKERT-SCALE ITEMS AND KEY DEMOGRAPHICS). THIS STUDY WILL GENERATE NEW IDEAS FOR PRACTITIONERS ON EXPANDING THE APPLICATION OF PROCEDURAL JUSTICE DURING TRAFFIC STOPS. WE ANTICIPATE THIS NEW INTERVENTION WILL HELP POLICE DEPARTMENTS REFORMULATE POLICY PERTAINING TO CITIZEN-POLICE INTERACTION DURING A TRAFFIC STOP. BRC-BIO: A BIOGEOCHEMICAL STUDY OF BOG IRON IN THE NEW JERSEY PINE BARRENS -THE PROJECT WILL STUDY BACTERIA IN PINE BARRENS BOG IRON SEEPS TO UNDERSTAND HOW BACTERIAL COMMUNITIES THRIVE ON IRON. THE NEW JERSEY PINE BARRENS IS A 1.1-MILLION-ACRE FOREST WITH SANDY, NUTRIENT-POOR SOIL AND ACIDIC WATERS THAT ARE RICH IN IRON. IRON MOVES FROM UNDERGROUND WATERS TO THE SURFACE AND COLLECTS IN RUST-COLORED BOGS THAT WERE HISTORICALLY USED IN THE IRON INDUSTRY. ALTHOUGH HUMANS HAVE LONG SINCE ABANDONED THE IRON FORGES, BOG IRON SEEPS ARE HUBS OF ACTIVITY FOR BACTERIA THAT USE DISSOLVED IRON FOR ENERGY. THE UNIQUE ABILITIES OF IRON BACTERIA COULD BE USED IN PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS SUCH AS REMOVING TOXIC METALS FROM DRINKING WATER OR DEVELOPING GREEN ENERGY. DESPITE THEIR POTENTIAL TO BENEFIT HUMANS, LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT HOW THESE BACTERIA CYCLE IRON. THE PROJECT WILL IDENTIFY THE SPECIES OF BACTERIA THAT LIVE IN IRON BOGS AND WILL STUDY HOW THESE BACTERIA CHEMICALLY CHANGE IRON. ADDITIONALLY, THE RESEARCH WILL SUPPORT PAID RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FROM HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS. THE PI WILL ALSO HAVE PUBLIC OUTREACH EVENTS THAT EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON BOG IRON SEEPS AND THEIR MICOBES. THIS STUDY WILL ESTABLISH BIOGEOCHEMICAL OBSERVATORIES AT THREE HISTORIC IRON FORGE LOCATIONS, WHICH REPRESENT THE LARGEST AND MOST HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT BOG IRON DEPOSITS ACROSS THREE WATERSHEDS IN THE PINELANDS: HARRISVILLE FURNACE (OSWEGO/WADING RIVER), BATSTO VILLAGE (MULLICA RIVER), AND WEYMOUTH FURNACE (GREAT EGG HARBOR RIVER). EACH SITE CONTAINS IRON (III) OXYHYDROXIDE-BEARING SEEPS AND SPRINGS WHERE THE DIVERSITY AND ACTIVITY OF IRON-CYCLING BACTERIA CAN BE TRACKED OVER TIME UNDER VARYING GEOCHEMICAL AND HYDROLOGICAL CONDITIONS. IRON-CYCLING MECHANISMS AT THESE LOCATIONS WILL BE EXAMINED USING A MULTI-PRONGED APPROACH, INCLUDING CONTINUOUS GEOCHEMICAL DATA LOGGING AND SUBSURFACE HYDROLOGY, METAGENOMIC AND METATRANSCRIPTOMIC SEQUENCING TECHNIQUES, SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY, AND X-RAY DIFFRACTION. ENRICHMENT CULTURING UNDER SELECTIVE CONDITIONS WILL BE USED TO TEST THE RATES AND RELATIVE CONTRIBUTIONS OF IRON OXIDATION BY DIFFERENT CLADES OF BACTERIA USING CYCLIC VOLTAMMETRY, STABLE ISOTOPE PROBING, AND METATRANSCRIPTOMICS. THE RESULTING HYDROLOGICAL, GEOCHEMICAL, AND META-OMIC DATASETS WILL BE USED TO GENERATE A FUNCTIONAL MODEL OF IRON BIOGEOCHEMISTRY IN PINE BARRENS BOG IRON SEEPS. THE REGION CURRENTLY LACKS ANY SUGARING INFRASTRUCTURE BUT HAS MANY ENGAGED HOBBYISTS AND A WEALTH OF RED MAPLE RESOURCES. TO ACCELERATE INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT, WE PROPOSE TO DEVELOP A NETWORK OF SELF-SUSTAINING BOILING HUBS FOR PROCESSING SAP. IN EXCHANGE FOR GRANTSPONSORED EQUIPMENT INVESTMENT (I.E., EVAPORATORS, REVERSE-OSMOSIS, VACUUMS) AND PROFESSIONAL CONSULTING, HUB OWNERS WILL BE CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGATED TO 1) ENSURE THAT SAP FROM HUB-OWNED PROPERTY ACCOUNTS FOR A MAXIMUM OF 50% OF TOTAL PROCESSED SAP WITH THE OTHER 50% COMING FROM COMMUNITY TAPPERS, 2) DEVELOP A FINANCIALLY SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC MODEL, AND 3) HOST OPEN-HOUSE EVENTS AND WORKSHOPS TO ATTRACT AND EDUCATE MORE PARTICIPANTS. THESE REACTIONS ARE IMPORTANT FOR MAKING PRODUCTS RANGING FROM PHARMACEUTICALS TO FRAGRANCES AND ANY NUMBER OF FINE CHEMICALS. TRADITIONALLY THESE TYPES OF REACTIONS ARE DONE USING SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT AND HYDROGEN GAS. THE WORK PROPOSED HERE BYPASSES THE STORAGE OF HYDROGEN BY GENERATING HYDROGEN DURING THE REACTION FROM READILY AVAILABLE PRECURSORS. ANOTHER EMPHASIS OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO MAKE THE REACTIONS SIMPLER AND LESS EXPENSIVE. THIS WILL BE DONE THROUGH DESIGN BY CONSTRUCTING CATALYSTS THAT PERFORM HYDROGENATIONS USING MILD CONDITIONS. THIS FUNDING WILL SUPPORT THE WORK OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS BY PROVIDING TRAINING IN VARIOUS CHEMISTRY TECHNIQUES AND AN IMMERSIVE SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCE. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: TIDALLY RECTIFIED FLOWS IN MULTIPLE INLET/LAGOON SYSTEMS: CONSEQUENCES FOR TRANSPORT AND RESIDENCE TIMES -SHALLOW, BATHYMETRICALLY-COMPLEX LAGOON SYSTEMS COMPRISE A SIGNIFICANT FRACTION OF THE WORLD?S COASTLINES, INCLUDING THOSE OF THE UNITED STATES. THESE SYSTEMS ARE HIGHLY IMPACTED BY HUMAN ACTIVITY, YET ARE VITALLY IMPORTANT REGIONS FOR COMMERCIAL AND RECREATIONAL FISHERIES, INLAND WATER TRANSPORTATION, BUFFERING COASTAL COMMUNITIES FROM STORMS, AND ARE HOME TO SENSITIVE COASTAL BENTHIC AND MARSH ECOSYSTEMS. THIS PROJECT WOULD STUDY LAGOON SYSTEMS WITH MULTIPLE INLETS, USING IDEALIZED AND REALISTIC NUMERICAL MODELING STUDIES COMBINED WITH FIELD OBSERVATIONS. THE WORK WOULD FOCUS ON BARNEGAT BAY AND ADJACENT LAGOONS IN NJ TO TEST THE HYPOTHESIS THAT TIDALLY-DRIVEN RESIDUAL MOTIONS AT INLETS ARE THE DOMINANT MECHANISM CONTROLLING CIRCULATION, RESIDENCE TIME AND, CONSEQUENTLY WATER QUALITY OF LAGOONS. RESIDENCE TIME, WATER QUALITY AND OVERALL ECOLOGICAL HEALTH OF LAGOONS ARE HIGHLY SENSITIVE TO NET TRANSPORT AT LAGOON INLETS AND ARE LIKELY SENSITIVE TO INLET MODIFICATION. THE STUDY WOULD SEEK TO CHARACTERIZE THIS SENSITIVITY AND PROVIDE A DYNAMICAL FRAMEWORK FOR UNDERSTANDING ITS ECOLOGICAL AND SOCIETAL IMPLICATIONS. THE PROJECT INCLUDES SUPPORT FOR THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF TWO GRADUATE STUDENTS AND WILL PROVIDE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPERIENTIAL STEM EDUCATION FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS. OUTREACH PRESENTATIONS WILL BE GIVEN TO ORGANIZATIONS, MARINE EXTENSION AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS CONCERNED WITH LAGOON CONSERVATION. THE PROJECT WILL USE IDEALIZED AND REALISTIC MODELING WITH ROMS, COMBINED WITH OBSERVATIONS TO QUANTIFY BOTH STOKES AND EULERIAN TRANSPORT, WHICH SUM TO THE LAGRANGIAN TRANSPORT THROUGH THE MULTIPLE INLETS IN THE REPRESENTATIVE BARNEGAT BAY, NJ SYSTEM. WHILE THE MOST DETAILED ESTIMATES OF THESE TRANSPORT QUANTITIES WILL BE OBTAINED FROM MODEL OUTPUT, ESTIMATES FROM OBSERVATIONAL DATA WILL PROVIDE KEY INSIGHTS INTO THE MODULATION OF THESE TERMS BY TIDAL AMPLITUDE, VARIABILITY OF SUBTIDAL SEA LEVEL, AND TIDAL PERIOD PROCESSES SUCH AS CHANNEL/SHOAL EXCHANGE AND TRAPPING. THREE MAIN HYPOTHESES WILL BE ADDRESSED: H1. MEAN CIRCULATION AND NET TRANSPORT AT CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE LAGOON AND THE COASTAL OCEAN (INLETS) ARE DOMINATED BY TIDALLY-RECTIFIED FLOWS. H2. THE PRESENCE OF MULTIPLE INLETS SIGNIFICANTLY INFLUENCES NET TRANSPORT BETWEEN THE LAGOON AND THE COASTAL OCEAN AS WELL AS THE CIRCULATION AND RESIDENCE TIME WITHIN THE LAGOON. H3. BUOYANCY INPUTS AND STORMS MODIFY TIDAL RECTIFICATION (AND THUS NET TRANSPORT) AT INLETS. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.

COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: STRENGTHENING THE OOI DATA LABS COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE (COP) TO ENHANCE UNDERGRADUATE DATA LITERACY -THE OCEAN OBSERVING INITIATIVE (OOI) IS AN OBSERVATIONAL NETWORK OF OVER EIGHT HUNDRED OCEAN INSTRUMENTS PROVIDING NEAR REAL-TIME DATA THAT IS FREELY AVAILABLE ONLINE. A COLLABORATIVE GROUP OF OCEAN EDUCATION FACULTY FROM RUTGERS UNIVERSITY AND STOCKTON UNIVERSITY IN NEW JERSEY, HILLSBOROUGH COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN FLORIDA, AND CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK QUEENS COLLEGE AND THE SCIENCE EDUCATION RESOURCES CENTER AT CARLETON COLLEGE IN MINNESOTA WILL SUPPORT CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND STUDENT ENGAGEMENT USING ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES OF THE OOI. THE WORK WILL MAINTAIN AND EXTEND THE COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE OF PROFESSORS ENGAGED IN TEACHING WITH OOI DATA. THESE PROFESSORS WILL BE ENGAGED IN THE PROJECT WITH THE GOAL OF BUILDING DATA LITERACY IN STUDENTS WITH EFFECTIVE COURSE MATERIALS AND EXPANDING THE WORKFORCE CAPACITY IN OCEAN DATA SCIENCE AND DATA ANALYTICS. RECRUITMENT OF PARTICIPANTS WILL FOCUS ON FACULTY FROM TWO-YEAR COLLEGES, REGIONAL FOUR-YEAR COLLEGES, AND MINORITY SERVING INSTITUTIONS, WHOSE STUDENT POPULATIONS INCLUDE GREATER NUMBERS OF STUDENTS WHO ARE FIRST-GENERATION, VETERANS, NON-TRADITIONAL, AND/OR FROM HISTORICALLY MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES. THE PROJECT WILL PROVIDE TARGETED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROFESSORS TO BECOME MORE EXPERT USERS OF OOI ASSETS, SUCH AS THE NEWLY LOCATED PIONEER ARRAY, AND DATA STREAMS WHILE INCREASING UNDERGRADUATES? ENGAGEMENT AND UNDERSTANDING OF CORE CONCEPTS IN OCEANOGRAPHY. THROUGH THESE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES, THE PROJECT WILL EMPOWER A COMMUNITY OF UNDERGRADUATE INSTRUCTORS TO TEACH OCEANOGRAPHY WHILE DEVELOPING STUDENTS? DATA SKILLS USING OOI DATA ASSETS. THE PROJECT WILL ADVANCE THE EXISTING OOI OCEAN DATA LABS PROGRAM MODEL BY PROVIDING TARGETED FACULTY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO PROMOTE LEARNING OF OCEAN LITERACY AND DATA SKILLS AND EXPAND EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES THAT BRING OOI DATA INTO UNDERGRADUATE GEOSCIENCE CURRICULUM. AN ASSESSMENT OF COMMUNITY NEEDS WILL INFORM THE DEVELOPMENT OF ADDITIONAL RELEVANT CONTENT, THAT CAN BE ARTICULATED AND TAUGHT USING OOI ASSETS. THE DATA LABS ONLINE RESOURCES PROVIDE SCAFFOLDED ACTIVITIES INVOLVING GUIDED STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO ORIENT AND INTERPRET DATA FROM THE OOI THAT ARE TIED TO FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES IN OCEANOGRAPHY. THE ACTIVITIES MEET USERS? NEEDS BY PLACING INFORMATION INTO RELEVANT CONTEXT, SELF-CHECKING KNOWLEDGE THROUGHOUT THE ACTIVITIES AND PROMOTING SELF-DIRECTED DISCOVERY TO SUPPORT UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS THAT WOULD BENEFIT FROM MORE PRACTICE WITH MATH OR DATA SKILLS AND WELL AS STUDENTS WHO ARE READY FOR HIGHER ORDER LEARNING OBJECTIVES. THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO EXPAND THE COLLECTION OF OOI EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES, BY ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW ACTIVITIES AND NEW PYTHON-BASED STRUCTURED ACTIVITIES THAT INTRODUCE TECHNICAL SKILLS AND FURTHER THE DATA LITERACY OF STUDENTS LEARNING OCEANOGRAPHIC CONCEPTS. CONTROL OF HISTONE METHYLATION DURING DIFFERENTIATION - DIFFERENTIATION REQUIRES CELLS TO INTEGRATE EXTERNAL SIGNALING CUES WITH INTERNAL CELL-TYPE INFORMATION TO EXECUTE COMPLEX TRANSCRIPTIONAL PROGRAMS. MISTAKES IN THIS PROCESS CAN LEAD TO DEVELOPMENTAL DEFECTS AND CANCERS. POST-TRANSLATIONAL HISTONE MODIFICATIONS PLAY CENTRAL ROLES IN ORCHESTRATING ALL PHASES OF TRANSCRIPTION. WHILE MUCH IS KNOWN REGARDING HOW HISTONE MODIFICATIONS ARE MAINTAINED AND INTERPRETED, A SIGNIFICANT GAP EXISTS IN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THE ENZYME COMPLEXES THAT CATALYZE THESE MODIFICATIONS ARE CONTROLLED. THE LONG-TERM GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DISSECT THE MOLECULAR MECHANISMS THAT REGULATE HISTONE MODIFICATION COMPLEXES DURING DIFFERENTIATION. THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO INVESTIGATE CHANGES IN THE INTEGRITY, STABILITY, AND ACTIVITY OF THE HISTONE H3LYS4 METHYLTRANSFERASE COMPASS COMPLEX DURING MEIOTIC DIFFERENTIATION IN THE BUDDING YEAST S. CEREVISIAE. OUR CENTRAL HYPOTHESIS IS THAT THERE IS A TWO- STEP MECHANISM THAT RESULTS IN MEIOSIS-SPECIFIC COMPASS INACTIVATION THAT IS NECESSARY FOR EFFICIENT MEIOTIC ENTRY AND COMPLETION. THE FIRST STEP IMPLICATES CHANGES IN LOCUS-SPECIFIC SET1 METHYLTRANSFERASE RECRUITMENT AS CELLS ENTER MEIOSIS, WHILE THE SECOND STEP INVOLVES MEIOSIS- SPECIFIC SET1 DEGRADATION TO ALLOW PROGRESSION PAST THE COMMITMENT POINT. TWO SPECIFIC AIMS ARE PROPOSED TO TEST THIS HYPOTHESIS. AIM 1 WILL DEFINE THE ROLE OF LOCUS-SPECIFIC SET1 ANTAGONISM FOR MEIOTIC ENTRY AND EXECUTION. OUR PRELIMINARY AND PUBLISHED DATA INDICATE THAT THE CDK8 KINASE MODULE OF THE RNA POL II MEDIATOR COMPLEX INHIBITS LOCUS-SPECIFIC SET1 RECRUITMENT. USING MOLECULAR, BIOCHEMICAL, AND GENETIC APPROACHES, WE WILL DETERMINE IF CDK8-DEPENDENT SET1 ANTAGONISM OCCURS VIA DIRECT OR INDIRECT MECHANISMS. CHIP-SEQUENCING WILL DETERMINE HOW GENOME-WIDE CDK8-DEPENDENT SET1 OCCUPANCY IS ALTERED AS CELLS ENTER THE MEIOTIC PROGRAM. AIM 2 WILL DETERMINE HOW SET1 DEGRADATION IS INCORPORATED INTO THE MEIOTIC PROGRAM. CHEMICAL AND GENETIC APPROACHES WILL DECIPHER THE REQUIREMENT OF MEIOTIC GENE EXPRESSION AND IDENTIFY THE MEIOTIC HALLMARKS LINKED TO SET1 DEGRADATION. USING GENETIC AND MOLECULAR APPROACHES, WE WILL DETERMINE THE CONSEQUENCES OF STABILIZING SET1 ON MEIOTIC PROGRESSION AND COMPLETION WHILE MONITORING COMPASS INTEGRITY AND H3LYS4 ME PATTERNS. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THESE AIMS WILL HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT AS THEY WILL PROVIDE MECHANISTIC DETAIL INTO HOW COMPASS IS RETOOLED DURING DIFFERENTIATION. THE STRENGTH OF THIS PROJECT IS THAT IT MERGES CLASSICAL TECHNIQUES IN YEAST GENETICS, BIOCHEMISTRY, AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY WITH CONTEMPORARY APPROACHES IN GENOMICS AND COMPUTATION.
