IS A CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING AND LEADERSHIP WHERE A DIVERSE COMMUNITY OF CHILDREN, YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULTS CULTIVATE HABITS OF HEALTHY LIVING AND SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICE, ACQUIRING THE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND UNDERSTANDING THEY NEED TO LIVE POWERFUL, PRODUCTIVE, ENRICHED LIVES. IN 1997, A CHARTER TO OPERATE COMMON GROUND HIGH SCHOOL WAS GRANTED. THE PROJECT WILL ENGAGE COMMUNITIES AND SOLVE PROBLEMS FACING THE CITY OF NEW HAVEN WITH A FOCUS ON SIX NEIGHBORHOODS IMPACTED BY ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE: WEST ROCK, WEST RIVER, NEWHALLVILLE, DWIGHT/DIXWELL, FAIR HAVEN, AND THE HILL. THE RECIPIENT WILL DEVELOP A GREEN JOB CORPS (GJC) CONSISTING OF OVER 100 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO WILL BE RECRUITED FROM COMMON GROUND HIGH SCHOOL (CGHS) AND OTHER NEW HAVEN HIGH SCHOOLS TO PARTICIPATE IN AT LEAST 200 PAID ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE POSITIONS AS ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE PROBLEM SOLVERS. THROUGH THE GJC, STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE ENVIRONMENTAL JOB TRAINING AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT IN HIGH-IMPACT ROLES RELATED TO COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, PUBLIC EDUCATION, AND ACTION AROUND LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE CHALLENGES. GJC MEMBERS WILL WORK WITH NEW HAVEN RESIDENTS TO CONTRIBUTE DIRECTLY TO IMPROVE AIR QUALITY, DECREASE CLIMATE IMPACTS, IMPROVE CLIMATE RESILIENCY, DECREASE ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH IMPACTS, AND ASSIST IN INCREASING THE CITY OF NEW HAVEN'S CAPACITY TO PROBLEM-SOLVE ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE ISSUES BY LEADING COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EFFORTS THAT INCORPORATE ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE PRIORITIES INTO CITY PLANNING.ACTIVITIES:THE ACTIVITIES INCLUDE THE DEVELOPMENT OF A GREEN JOB CORPS (GJC), CONSISTING OF OVER 100 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM COMMON GROUND HIGH SCHOOL (CGHS) AND OTHER NEW HAVEN HIGH SCHOOLS TO PARTICIPATE IN AT LEAST 200 PAID POSITIONS AS ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE PROBLEM SOLVERS. **AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** FOR OVER 30 YEARS, THE NEW HAVEN ECOLOGY PROJECT (COMMON GROUND) HAS OPERATED THREE CONNECTED EFFORTS TO FULFILL ITS MISSION: THE NATION'S LONGEST-RUNNING ENVIRONMENTAL PUBLIC CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL, AN URBAN FARM, AND A COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER. IN COMMON GROUND'S MANY YEARS OF COMMUNITY-DRIVEN AGRICULTURAL WORK IN OUR URBAN ENVIRONMENT OF NEW HAVEN, CT, WE HAVE SEEN THE STRONGEST RESULTS COME FROM MULTIGENERATIONAL, COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS. THE THREE INTERCONNECTED INITIATIVES IN OUR PROPOSAL PROVIDE STUDENTS, TEACHERS, AND SCHOOLS IN OUR CITY AND BROADER REGION WITH OPPORTUNITIES FOR MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING IN AGRICULTURE AND FOOD WASTE REDUCTION.COMMON GROUND'S PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO INCREASE THE CAPACITY FOR LOCAL FOOD AND FOOD WASTE EDUCATION AND ADVANCE NUTRITION EDUCATION WHILE FOSTERING COMMUNITY AMONG STUDENTS AND LOCAL AND REGIONAL PARTNERS. OUR GOALS IN THIS PROJECT ARE TO (1) INCREASE THE CAPACITY FOR FOOD, GARDEN, AND NUTRITION EDUCATION WITHIN 15 NEW HAVEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS (NHPS) THROUGH OUR SCHOOLYARDS PROGRAM; (2) FOSTER CAREER AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT IN AGRICULTURE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THROUGH OUR GREEN JOBS CORPS PROGRAM; AND (3) PRESENT FOOD AND AGRICULTURE SERVICE LEARNING MODULES AND DATA REGIONALLY AND NATIONALLY BY DISSEMINATING METHODOLOGY AND OUTCOMES THROUGH OUR COLLABORATIVE PROGRAM TEACHING OUR CITIES. WE WILL ACHIEVE THESE GOALS BY 1. THE GRANTEE WILL DO THIS BY COLLABORATING WITH ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE (EJ) ORGANIZATIONS AND PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS IN NEW HAVEN AND THROUGHOUT NEW ENGLAND TO DEVELOP A MULTI-YEAR PROGRAM FOCUSED ON EJ LEADERSHIP TRAINING AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES TO 225 STUDENTS AT COMMON GROUND HIGH SCHOOL (CGHS). THE PROJECT WILL GROW OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH IN NEW HAVEN AND THROUGHOUT NEW ENGLAND TO BECOME EJ PROBLEM-SOLVERS BY UTILIZING LEADERSHIP PROJECTS FOCUSED ON CLEAN AIR, CLEAN WATER, AND LAND REVITALIZATION TOPICS. THE GRANTEE WILL ALSO BUILD THE TEACHING CAPACITY OF EDUCATORS TO INSTRUCT STUDENTS ON EJ THROUGH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES, SUCH AS WORKSHOPS, ONLINE RESOURCES, ETC. ALL STUDENTS WILL COMPLETE A CORE CURRICULUM THAT INCLUDES THE STUDY OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, THE AIR QUALITY AND HUMAN HEALTH IMPACTS OF FOSSIL FUELS, ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE, LEAD IN SOILS, CONSEQUENCES OF EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS, AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH. THE PURPOSE OF THIS ARP FUNDED GRANT IS TO SUPPORT THE NEW HAVEN ECOLOGY PROJECT'S EATING AND GROWING EQUITABLY PROJECT. THROUGH THIS EFFORT NEW HAVEN RESIDENTS WILL GAIN KNOWLEDGE AND BE INSPIRED TO GROW FOOD LOCALLY AND BUILD THE CITY'S CAPACITY TO IMPROVE AIR QUALITY AND PUBLIC HEALTH. NHEP'S PROJECT AIMS TO CREATE SPACES FOR COMMUNITY KNOWLEDGE SHARING THAT AMPLIFY LOCAL EXPERTS AND YOUTH VOICES REGARDING CLIMATE FRIENDLY FOOD BY UTILIZING ITS FARM TO CREATE AN INTENSIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR SUMMER FARM INTERNS AND A GREEN JOBS CORPS CREW. THE ORGANIZATION FOCUSES ON LEARNING AND LEADERSHIP, INVITING PEOPLE ACROSS AGES AND IDENTITIES TO CONNECT TO THEIR URBAN ENVIRONMENT, BUILD COMMUNITY, GROW INTO THEIR FULL POTENTIAL, AND CONTRIBUTE TO A JUST AND SUSTAINABLE ROLE. THROUGH AN ESTABLISHED NETWORK OF CONNECTIONS IN NEW HAVEN, THE NEW HAVEN ECOLOGY PROJECT WILL ENGAGE APPROXIMATELY 175 PEOPLE FOR AN ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND FIVE SMALLER WORKSHOPS, INCLUDING YOUTH WORKSHOPS. EATING AND GROWING EQUITABLY WILL BUILD AWARENESS AND SKILL AROUND SEED SAVING, COMPOSTING, AND BLACK AND BROWN FARMING TECHNOLOGIES AND RESULT IN MORE FOOD BEING PRODUCED IN EJ NEIGHBORHOODS BY THE NEIGHBORHOOD RESIDENTS, REDUCED FOOD TRANSPORTATION MILES AND IMPROVED AIR QUALITY. THIS PROJECT CAN BE FUNDED UNDER SECTION 103(B) OF THE CLEAN AIR ACT. ACTIVITIES:THE ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED UNDER THIS GRANT INCLUDE AN INTENSIVE FARM-BASED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM . THE FARM AND GARDEN SERIES CONSISTS OF ONE MAIN WINTER CONFERENCE, AND FIVE INDIVIDUAL WORKSHOPS FOR TARGETED AUDIENCES; FARM INTERNSHIPS FOR YOUNG ADULTS AND JOBS CORPS FARM CREW PLACEMENTS FOR COMMON GROUND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. OUTCOMES:THE EATING AND GROWING EQUITABLY: GROWING FOOD, IMPROVING HEALTH, CLEANING URBAN AIR PROJECT WILL HELP INCREASE LOCAL FOOD PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION IN LOW INCOME NEIGHBORHOODS THAT ARE FOOD DESERTS, REDUCING FOOD TRANSPORTATION MILES AND THUS EMISSIONS. DESCRIPTION:THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS FOR THE NEW HAVEN ECOLOGY PROJECT INC. TO FOCUS ON THE CITY OF NEW HAVEN, CT AND CREATE RESOURCES FOR USE BY OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE COMMUNITIES. THE PROPOSED PROJECT FOCUSES ON COMMON GROUND HIGH SCHOOL (CGHS) STUDENTS, 70% OF WHOM ARE NEW HAVEN RESIDENTS, 80% ARE YOUNG PEOPLE OF COLOR, AND 65% ARE ELIGIBLE FOR FREE/REDUCED LUNCH. THIS PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO ENGAGE 225 YOUNG PEOPLE DIRECTLY AND, THROUGH THEIR EFFORTS AND LEADERSHIP, ENGAGE ADDITIONAL REGIONAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THROUGH THE JOINT OFFERING OF IMMERSIVE OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP AND SUSTAINABLE DESIGN COURSES STUDENTS AT CGHS WILL (1) DEEPEN THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ISSUES IMPACTING THEIR LEARNING, (2) BUILD CAPACITY AND COMMITMENT AS CLIMATE CHANGE MAKERS AND LEADERS, AND (3) CONTRIBUTE IN REAL WAYS TO REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH IMPACT AND CARBON EMISSION ON OUR CAMPUS. ACTIVITIES:THESE FUNDS WILL BE USED TO COMPENSATE THE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AND OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP TEACHER FOR THE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN, OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP, AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IN ACTION COURSES FOR THE STUDENTS. MOREOVER, THE FUNDS WILL BE USED FOR DOCUMENTING AND PUBLISHING SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AND OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP ENVIRONMENTAL COURSES AND STUDENT-LED CHANGE EFFORTS.
