GARDERE ON THE MOVE - GARDERE ON THE MOVE IS A FEDERALLY FUNDED, FIVE-YEAR INITIATIVE FOCUSING ON REDUCING UNDERAGE ALCOHOL AND VAPE USE AMONG 13,000+ RESIDENTS BY ADDRESSING POVERTY, DENSE POPULATIONS, COMMUNITY VIOLENCE AND CHILDHOOD TRAUMA. IT STRENGTHENS SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH SERVICES FOR YOUTH AND IS LED BY THE GARDERE PREVENTION SERVICES NETWORK (GPSN), WHICH WILL LAUNCH A PREVENTION APP FOR EASY ACCESS TO SERVICES. GARDERE ON THE MOVE IS DESIGNED TO PREVENT AND REDUCE THE INITIATION AND PROGRESSION OF UNDERAGE ALCOHOL AND VAPE USE IN THE GARDERE COMMUNITY. THE PROJECT SERVES A 3.39-SQUARE-MILE AREA WITH OVER 13,000 RESIDENTS, MANY OF WHOM LIVE BELOW THE POVERTY LEVEL. THE POPULATION DEMOGRAPHICS INCLUDE 49.4% AFRICAN AMERICANS AND 23.96% LATINOS. IN ADDITION TO POVERTY, POPULATION DENSITY, ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES AND VIOLENCE CONTRIBUTES TO TRAUMA AMONG CHILDREN AND YOUTH. THIS INITIATIVE IS SPEARHEADED BY THE GARDERE PREVENTION SERVICES NETWORK (GPSN), A PARTNERSHIP OF LOCAL AGENCY REPRESENTATIVES. THE GPSN IS TASKED WITH IDENTIFYING GAPS IN SERVICE DELIVERY AND DEVELOPING THE GARDERE PREVENTION APP (GPA) TO FACILITATE EASY ACCESS TO PREVENTION SERVICES FOR RESIDENTS. IN RECOGNITION OF THE CRITICAL ROLE SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH PLAY IN SUBSTANCE MISUSE, THE SCOPE OF THESE SERVICES WILL BE BROADENED ACCORDINGLY. THE GPSN IS COMMITTED TO ALIGNING ITS EFFORTS WITH LOCAL, STATE, AND NATIONAL PREVENTION INITIATIVES BY COLLABORATING WITH THE STATES' PARTNERSHIP FOR SUCCESS COALITIONS, STATE PREVENTION AGENCIES, THE PTTC, CADCA AND THE NPN. MORE SPECIFICALLY, AN ADVISORY BOARD AND CAPACITY BUILDING COMMITTEE WITH INCLUSION OF YOUTH AND ADULTS FROM THE COMMUNITY WILL DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A TARGETED PLAN TO REDUCE UNAUTHORIZED ALCOHOL USE IN HARTLEY/VEY PARK THROUGH EDUCATION OF THE PARK'S REGULATION AND THE HARMFULNESS OF ALCOHOL AND VAPE USE TO UNDERAGED YOUTHS. THE ADVISORY BOARD WILL ALSO MONITOR RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH PLANNING BOARD TO THE CITY COUNCIL REGARDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF DEFINITIONS, REGISTRATION, AND LOCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR VAPE SHOPS.
