THE PROJECT WILL HELP MITIGATE THE STRUCTURAL BARRIERS TO SUCCESS FOR GROWTH STAGE CLEAN ENERGY COMPANIES IN NEW YORK BY FORMALIZING AN ECOSYSTEM OF ADOPTION THAT MAXIMIZES AND CONNECTS REGIONAL CLEAN ENERGY, CUSTOMER, AND CAPITAL ASSETS. THE CLEAN FIGHT NY WILL ACCOMPLISH THIS THROUGH SCALING ITS CORE ACCELERATOR PROGRAM TO INCLUDE THREE NEW COHORTS FOR A TOTAL OF 25 NEW CLEAN ENERGY TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES COMPRISED OF UNDERSERVED AND EMERGING SUB-SECTORS OF THE CLIMATE TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO: TRANSPORTATION SOLUTIONS, GRID INNOVATION, RENEWABLE GENERATION, GREEN HYDROGEN, AND FINANCIAL INNOVATION SOLUTIONS. THE CLEAN FIGHT NY WILL ALSO EXPAND PROGRAM OFFERINGS BY PARTNERING WITH SECONDMUSE, AN IMPACT, AND INNOVATION COMPANY THAT RUNS SCALE FOR CLIMATETECH, A SUCCESSFUL MANUFACTURING READINESS PROGRAM IN NEW YORK, TO PROVIDE MANUFACTURING DEPLOYMENT SUPPORT TO FIVE COHORT COMPANIES PER YEAR (15 TOTAL OVER THREE YEARS) OF THE GRANT AWARD PERIOD. A SIGNIFICANT UNMET NEED EXISTS FOR BETTER TOOLS FOR RELATING ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY IN NEURONS AND NEURAL CIRCUITS TO MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR EVENTS OVER TIME. THIS PHASE I PROJECT WILL DEVELOP AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM FOR LARGE-SCALE, CHRONIC EXTRACELLULAR NEURAL RECORDING AND STIMULATION IN BRAIN ORGANOIDS, FOCUSING ON INNOVATIVE ORGANOID ASSAY CHAMBERS AND 3D NEURAL PROBES. THESE DEVICES WILL ENABLE BREAKTHROUGH STUDIES TO CORRELATE MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR FEATURES WITH FUNCTIONAL NEURONAL AND CIRCUIT PROPERTIES ACROSS TEMPORAL SCALES FROM MILLISECONDS TO WEEKS. THIS PROJECT WILL BE OF BROAD UTILITY ACROSS BASIC NEUROSCIENCE AND TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH. WE AIM TO 1) DEVELOP A BIOLOGICAL ASSAY CHAMBER SUPPORTING CHRONIC ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY WHILE MAINTAINING ORGANOID HEALTH; 2) DEVELOP HIGH-FIDELITY, 3D NEURAL PROBES FOR CHRONIC, EXTRACELLULAR RECORDING AND STIMULATION; AND 3) DEVELOP AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM FOR TURN-KEY LONGITUDINAL ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL ASSAYS IN BRAIN ORGANOIDS IN CELL BIOLOGY LABS. THE PROPOSED ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY SYSTEM WILL PROVIDE, FOR THE FIRST TIME, A NON-DESTRUCTIVE, LABEL-FREE, AND HIGH- RESOLUTION LONGITUDINAL FUNCTIONAL ASSAY FOR DIVERSE TYPES OF BRAIN ORGANOIDS. THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO BE USED ALONGSIDE ORGANOID DEVELOPMENT PROTOCOLS, OTHER NON-DESTRUCTIVE ASSAYS, AND BIOLOGICAL/DRUG TREATMENTS FOR THE BROADEST APPLICABILITY AND MINIMAL IMPOSITION OF TRADEOFFS IN STANDARD PRACTICE. THE INTEGRATED HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE SYSTEM WILL ENABLE LONGITUDINAL USE IN WELL-MAINTAINED ORGANOIDS AND TURN- KEY OPERATION BY NON-SPECIALISTS. THE PRIMARY FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENT IS TO ACHIEVE STABLE, RELIABLE, HIGH-FIDELITY MULTI-MODAL NEURAL INTERFACES (RECORD, ELECTRICA) FROM HUNDREDS OF NEURONS AND THEIR NEURAL CIRCUITS IN A PRESCRIBED 3D REGION OF INTEREST OF A BRAIN ORGANOID FOR UP TO 30 DAYS. THE TOOLS DERIVED FROM THIS PROJECT WILL PERMIT A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE FUNCTIONAL ASPECTS OF NEURAL INTERFACING WITHIN BRAIN ORGANOIDS, DRIVING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THERAPEUTIC STRATEGIES AND PROVIDING A ROBUST FRAMEWORK FOR THE FUTURE OF NEURODEVELOPMENTAL AND NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASE RESEARCH. MANUFACTURING HARDWARE ON-ORBIT CAN POTENTIALLY RELIEVE THE COSTS AND QUALIFICATION LEAD TIMES OF SPACE OPERATIONS BY SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCING LAUNCH COSTS. HOWEVER, ON-ORBIT MANUFACTURING WILL STILL REQUIRE INEXPENSIVE FEEDSTOCK. THIS PROJECT?S BUSINESS APPROACH WHICH IS SPACE PRODUCTION FROM IN-SPACE MATERIALS ADDRESSES THIS CORE PROBLEM OF ORBITAL MANUFACTURING. THIS PROJECT WILL BRING SIGNIFICANT TRANSFORMATIONS TO A WIDE RANGE OF SPACE ACTIVITIES, PROMOTING A CIRCULAR SPACE ECONOMY, LOWERING THE COST OF ORBITAL POWER, AND SIMULTANEOUSLY PROVIDING AN ECONOMIC INCENTIVE FOR SATELLITE/DEBRIS RECLAMATION, THUS MITIGATING ORBITAL DEBRIS AND CONGESTION. PROVIDING RAW MATERIALS SOURCED IN SPACE FOR ON-DEMAND, ON-ORBIT MANUFACTURING HOLDS THE POTENTIAL TO INCREASE THE ECONOMIC COMPETITIVENESS OF THE US THROUGH FINANCIALLY FEASIBLE SPACE OPERATIONS BY REDUCING LAUNCH MASS, COSTS, DEVELOPMENT TIME, AND CURRENT PAYLOAD AND SIZE LIMITATIONS, SUPPORTING THE US NATIONAL DEFENSE BY IMPROVING MILITARY POWER PROJECTION AND LOGISTICS RESILIENCE, SUPPORTING FUTURE SCIENTIFIC STUDIES OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM AND DEEP SPACE, EXPANDING THE LIMITS OF LONG-TERM EXPLORATION MISSIONS, AND REDUCING DEPENDENCE ON CARGO MISSIONS THROUGH IN SITU MANUFACTURING AND RECYCLING CAPABILITY. THIS SBIR PHASE I PROJECT PROPOSES TO DEVELOP A NOVEL APPROACH FOR RECYCLING PHOTOVOLTAICS IN AN ORBITAL ENVIRONMENT. THE VACUUM ENVIRONMENT OF SPACE WILL BE OPTIMAL FOR MANY STEPS IN SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING AND CAN BE CONSIDERED A HIGH-POTENTIAL APPLICATION FOR ORBITAL MANUFACTURING, ENABLING SILICON PRODUCTION TO SCALE WELL BEYOND THE CURRENT CONSTRAINTS OF TERRESTRIAL VACUUM CHAMBER BOTTLENECKS. HOWEVER, WHILE THE VACUUM WILL BE BENEFICIAL OVERALL TO SILICON PRODUCTION, NEARLY EVERY PROCESS IN MODERN CHEMICAL MANUFACTURING IS RELIANT ON GRAVITY AND NEEDS TO BE ADAPTED TO FUNCTION IN A MICROGRAVITY ENVIRONMENT. THIS PROJECT FOCUSES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A FLUIDIZED BED REACTOR (FBR) FOR MICROGRAVITY ANALOG PRODUCTION OF MONOSILANE GAS FROM END-OF-LIFE SILICON PHOTOVOLTAICS AND VARIOUS HYDROGEN SOURCES, AS IT CONSTITUTES THE MOST CRITICAL STEP IN THE SILICON PRODUCTION LINE. WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THIS PROJECT, PARTICULATES PRODUCED FROM PV CELLS WILL BE CHARACTERIZED, A BASIC MODEL OF THE THERMOCHEMICAL REACTIONS WILL BE DEVELOPED TO DETERMINE DESIGN PARAMETER NOMINALS AND A BENCHTOP PROTOTYPE TO CHARACTERIZE THE MECHANICS OF PARTICLE AND GAS FLOWS IN AN ANALOG TO MICROGRAVITY WILL BE DEVELOPED, ESTABLISHING ITS FEASIBILITY FOR IN-SPACE PROCESSING FOR THE ENVISIONED APPLICATIONS.
