OUR PROJECT, IYAPI KIN NI UN - THE LANGUAGE IS ALIVE, IS ROOTED IN AN ALL-OF-COMMUNITY APPROACH, AIMING TO COLLABORATE EXTENSIVELY WITH INDIVIDUALS, GROUPS, NON-PROFITS, AND TRIBAL PROGRAMS FROM THE BROADER STANDING ROCK COMMUNITY.THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO FORGE INTERGENERATIONAL IMMERSIVE LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL LEARNING EXPERIENCES, EVENTS, AND RESOURCES FOR THE HOLISTIC ENRICHMENT OF WAHOHPI STUDENTS, STAFF, FAMILIES, AND THE ENTIRE STANDING ROCK COMMUNITY. THIS WILL BE ACHIEVED THROUGH THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES:OBJECTIVE 1: DEVELOP THEMATIC CURRICULUM UNITS AND ALIGNED FAMILY LANGUAGE AND CULTURE LEARNING GUIDES.OUR PROJECT REVOLVES AROUND THE CREATION OF THEMATIC CURRICULUM UNITS DESIGNED TO INFUSE DAKOTA LAKOTA LANGUAGE AND CULTURE INTO EVERY ASPECT OF LEARNING AT WAHOHPI KIN. THESE UNITS WILL NOT ONLY CATER TO THE NEEDS OF WAHOHPI STUDENTS BUT ALSO EXTEND THEIR REACH INTO THE HOMES OF FAMILIES. ACCOMPANYING FAMILY LANGUAGE AND CULTURE LEARNING GUIDES WILL ALLOW FAMILIES TO ENGAGE WITH THEIR CHILDREN S EDUCATION WHILE GROWING THE LANGUAGE FLUENCY OF EACH FAMILY.OBJECTIVE 2: FACILITATE COMMUNITY-COLLABORATED CULTURAL AND LANGUAGE-ENRICHED ACTIVITIES AND CREATE COMMUNITY LANGUAGE AND CULTURE LEARNING GUIDES.A CORNERSTONE OF OUR APPROACH INVOLVES FOSTERING COLLABORATION WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: CHIPS: TCUP CYBER CONSORTIUM ADVANCING COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION (TCACSE) -A GOAL OF THE TRIBAL COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES PROGRAM (TCUP) IS TO INCREASE THE SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) INSTRUCTIONAL AND RESEARCH CAPACITIES OF SPECIFIC INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION THAT SERVE THE NATION'S INDIGENOUS STUDENTS. EXPANDING THE STEM CURRICULAR OFFERINGS AT THESE INSTITUTIONS EXPANDS THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEIR STUDENTS TO PURSUE CHALLENGING, REWARDING CAREERS IN STEM FIELDS, PROVIDES FOR RESEARCH STUDIES IN AREAS THAT MAY BE CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT, AND ENCOURAGES A COMMUNITY AND GENERATIONAL APPRECIATION FOR SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS EDUCATION. THIS PROJECT ALIGNS DIRECTLY WITH THAT GOAL, ALLOWING THE INSTITUTIONS TO DESIGN AND DEVELOP A COMPREHENSIVE PLAN FOR IMPROVING AND EXPANDING STEM INSTRUCTION, AND MOREOVER MAY SERVE AS A MODEL AND IMPETUS FOR SIMILAR INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION TO DEVELOP COLLABORATIVE DEGREE PROGRAMS. IT FURTHER SUPPORTS THE PARTICIPATING COLLEGES? MISSIONS TO PROVIDE STEM INSTRUCTION THAT IS GROUNDED IN TRADITIONAL CULTURE AND VALUES SPECIFIC TO THE COMMUNITIES THEY SERVE. THE TCUP CYBER CONSORTIUM ADVANCING COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION (TCACSE) IMPROVES THE COMPUTER SCIENCE AND CYBERSECURITY TRAINING FOR REGIONAL WORKFORCES IN THE COMMUNITIES SERVED BY TURTLE MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE (TMCC), UNITED TRIBES TECHNICAL COLLEGE (UTTC), WINDWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE (WCC), SITTING BULL COLLEGE (SBC), AND LITTLE PRIEST TRIBAL COLLEGE. THE PROJECT IS BUILDING AND ENHANCING COMPUTER SCIENCE CURRICULA THAT IMPROVE THE FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS OF CRITICAL THINKING, PROBLEM-SOLVING, CODING, AND COLLABORATION USED IN ACADEMIC OR RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, AND BUILDING CAPACITY TO SUPPORT EDUCATION AND RESEARCH IN COMPUTING RELATED FIELDS OF NATIONAL INTEREST, SUCH AS CYBERSECURITY, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, DATA SCIENCE, AND COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION. THE COLLABORATIVE PROJECT IS BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN TRIBAL EDUCATION, WORKFORCE, AND U.S. CYBERSECURITY NEEDS BY BUILDING A SUPPORTIVE MODEL FOR CYBER EDUCATION. THE LAKOTA/DAKOTA PEOPLE OF SRSR COMPRISE A DISTINCT LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL GROUP WITH THE LARGER OCHÉTHI ŠAKÓWINPEOPLES OF THE GREAT PLAINS. BECAUSE OF THE LAKOTA/DAKOTA'S CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH HORSES, THEY BECAME KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE PLAINS AS THE HORSE PEOPLE. THIS PROPOSAL SEEKS TO EXPAND ON A PREVIOUS EXTENSION SPECIAL EMPHASIS GRANT THAT ENGAGED TRIBAL YOUTH AND VETERANS IN THERAPEUTIC AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES WITH HORSES, INTEGRATED INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE INTO NEWLY ESTABLISHED GARDENS, AND WEAVE THE LAKOTA/DAKOTA LANGUAGE THROUGH ALL OF THESE EXTENSION ACTIVITIES. THIS PROPOSAL IS AN EXPANSION ON THE SPECIAL EMPHASIS GRANT, AND WHILE MAINTAINING MUCH OF THE ORIGINAL GRANT'S GOALS, THE MAIN FOCUS IS ON REACHING OUT TO THE ENTIRE LAKOTA/DAKOTA COMMUNITY, WHICH HAS BEEN A STRONG DESIRE OF THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE. SUMMARYAGRICULTURAL IS THE PRIMARY ECONOMIC DRIVER ON THE SANDING ROCK SIOUX RESERVATION (SRSR), AND YET THE MAJORITY OF INDIVIDUALS ARE INHIBITED FROM TRADITIONAL OR PROFESSIONAL CAREERS IN AGRICULTURE BECAUSE OF THE FRACTURED LAND DISTRIBUTION OR LACK OF PROFESSIONAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES. THIS PROPOSAL SEEKS TO PROVIDE A PATH FORWARD THROUGH THE CREATION OF A FORMAL AGRICULTURE/PRE-VETERINARY PROGRAM AT SITTING BULL COLLEGE. THIS PROGRAM WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS AND PROBLEM SOLVING STRATEGIES INVOLVED IN DEVELOPING AND MAINTAINING VIABLE FARMING/RANCHING ACTIVITIES. IN ADDITION, STUDENTS WILL GAIN CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE REGARDING PLANTS AND ANIMALS THAT WILL AID THEM IN THEIR CAREER SHOULD THEY CHOOSE THE PRE-VETERINARY PATH. THIS NEW PROGRAM WILL ADDRESS THE EQUITY GRANT NEED AREAS OF CURRICULAR DESIGN AND MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT, STUDENT EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING, AND STUDENT RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION. THE AGRICULTURAL COURSES WILL INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE LAKOTA/DAKOTA (OCHÉTHI ŠAKÓWIN) LANGUAGE AND CULTURE, ETHNOBOTANY AND ECOLOGY OF NATIVE PRAIRIE PLANTS, INDIGENOUS FOOD ISSUES AND INDIGENOUS FARMING TECHNIQUES THROUGH ACTIVE LEARNING TECHNIQUES AND HANDS-ON LABS. THE COLLEGE WILL ALSO REPLACE ITS OI ANALYTICAL FLOW IV ANALYZER WITH A XYLEM FS3700 ANALYZER. THE PROJECT WILL FOCUS ON CONNECTING RESEARCHERS ACROSS NORTH DAKOTA, IMPROVING STEM OPPORTUNITIES IN RURAL AREAS, AND FACILITATING STEM EDUCATION FOR STUDENTS AT TRIBAL COLLEGES. BY CREATING NEW PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN SCHOOLS, COLLEGES, AND UNIVERSITIES, THE PROJECT WILL INCREASE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STEM EDUCATION AND CAREERS. IT WILL PROMOTE HANDS-ON LEARNING, SOCIAL CONNECTIONS IN STEM EDUCATION, AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS FROM ACROSS THE STATE TO SUCCEED.
