GRADUATE PSYCHOLOGY EDUCATION PROGRAMS - CHATHAM UNIVERSITY'S COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY PSYD PROGRAM PROPOSES A RECRUITMENT, RETENTION, AND TRAINING PROJECT WHICH AIMS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF WELL-TRAINED, CULTURALLY COMPETENT HEALTH SERVICE PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS PREPARED TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF PEOPLE IN MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES AND/OR HIGH NEED HIGH DEMAND AREAS AND COMMITTED TO WORKING IN MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES AND/OR HIGH NEED HIGH DEMAND AREAS AFTER GRADUATION AFTER GRADUATION. THE PROJECT PARTICULARLY FOCUSES ON TRAINING HEALTH SERVICE PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF INDIVIDUALS WITH SUBSTANCE ABUSE OR OPIOID ABUSED DISORDERS AND/OR EXPERIENCING TRAUMA IN THESE COMMUNITIES. A TOTAL OF 21 PSYD COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY TRAINEES WILL COMPLETE THE PROJECT. WE WILL PARTNER WITH FIVE EXPERIENTIAL TRAINING SITES SERVING INDIVIDUALS IN MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES AND/OR HIGH NEED HIGH DEMAND AREAS AND PROVIDING TEAM-BASED, INTEGRATED, INTERDISCIPLINARY BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CARE WHERE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CARE IS INTEGRATED INTO COMMUNITY-BASED PRIMARY CARE. OUR TRAINING SITES INCLUDE THREE FEDERALLY QUALIFIED HEALTH CENTERS, A NON-PROFIT RYAN WHITE CARE ACT COMMUNITY CLINIC, AND UNIVERSITY COUNSELING CENTER INTEGRATED INTO THE STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES. SITES WERE SPECIFICALLY SELECTED BECAUSE THEY SERVE POPULATIONS AND COMMUNITIES WHERE PREVENTION, TREATMENT, AND RECOVERY SERVICES FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE DISORDER, OPIOID DISORDER, AND/OR TRAUMA ARE CRUCIAL AND THUS THE SITES CAN OFFER SIGNIFICANT TRAINING TIME DEVOTED TO PREVENTION, TREATMENT, AND RECOVERY SERVICES. STIPEND RECIPIENTS WILL BE SELECTED BECAUSE THEY EXPRESS INTEREST IN COMPLETING INTEGRATED, INTERDISCIPLINARY BEHAVIORAL HEALTH TRAINING AND/OR WORKING WITH PEOPLE IN MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES OR HIGH NEED HIGH DEMAND AREAS AND HOLD IDENTITIES THAT ARE UNDERREPRESENTED IN PSYCHOLOGY. TRAINEES WILL ENTER AN INTENSIVE INTERDISCIPLINARY TRAINING PROJECT INCLUDING 1) EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING IN TEAM-BASED APPROACHES USED IN BEHAVIORAL HEALTH IN COMMUNITY-BASED PRIMARY CARE AT THE SELECTED SITES, 2) IN-DEPTH TRAINING ON A COMPREHENSIVE, STIGMA-REDUCING EVIDENCE-BASED COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL HEALTH APPROACH EFFECTIVE FOR SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER, TRAUMA, AND THE COMBINATION, INCLUDING TRAINING ON STIGMA, TRAUMA-INFORMED CARE, SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER, OPIOID USE DISORDER, PREVENTION, TREATMENT, AND RECOVERY SERVICES, SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH, CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC STANDARDS, AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH DISORDERS IN CHILDREN, ADOLESCENTS, AND YOUNG ADULTS, AND 3) PARTICIPATING IN INTERDISCIPLINARY TRAINING ACTIVITIES WITH SOCIAL WORKERS, PSYCHIATRISTS, AND OTHER PROFESSIONAL TRAINEES. AN INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM STANDARDIZED PATIENT SIMULATION EXPERIENCE WILL ALLOW TRAINEES TO PRACTICE INTERDISCIPLINARY COMMUNICATION, TEAM-BASED CARE, AND CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC COMPETENCY. FACULTY AND BOTH CURRENT AND POTENTIAL NEW SUPERVISORS WILL ALSO RECEIVE IN-DEPTH TRAINING IN OPIOID USE AND SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS, TRAUMA-INFORMED CARE, TELE-BEHAVIORAL HEALTH, SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH, AND CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC STANDARDS THROUGH CO-CURRICULAR CONTINUING EDUCATION EVENTS. TRAINEES, FACULTY, AND STAFF WILL USE ONLINE MODULES TO LEARN ABOUT WORKFORCE WELLBEING AND RESOURCES TO REDUCE BURNOUT AS WELL AS LEADERSHIP AND SUPERVISION TO SUPPORT CURRENT SUPERVISORS INCREASE THE NUMBER OF SUPERVISORS. ONGOING ASSESSMENTS FOR QUALITY IMPROVEMENT WILL INCLUDE DATA COLLECTED AT REGULAR INTERVALS FROM STUDENT, FACULTY, AND SITE SUPERVISOR PERSPECTIVES. THIS DATA WILL BE MONITORED REGULARLY TO ADJUST AS NEEDED TO ASSURE PROGRAM SUCCESS. A PRIMARY OUTCOME IS JOB PLACEMENT RATE, PARTICULARLY JOBS SERVING INDIVIDUALS IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES OR HIGH NEED HIGH DEMAND AREAS. CHATHAM IS REQUESTING FUNDING PRIORITY AND PREFERENCE. 68.42% OF OUR GRADUATES ARE EMPLOYED IN MUC. ALL 5 SITES INCLUDE PSYCHOLOGY, SOCIAL WORK, AND PSYCHIATRY. ONE SITE QUALIFIES AS RURAL FOR THE ADDITIONAL 5 POINTS.

CAREER: TRACKING THE EVOLUTION OF HUMAN LOCOMOTION THROUGH FIELD, EXPERIMENTAL, AND COMPUTATIONAL ANALYSES OF FOSSIL FOOTPRINTS -THE SHIFT FROM QUADRUPEDAL TO BIPEDAL LOCOMOTION, WALKING ON TWO FEET, IS AT THE ROOT OF THE EVOLUTIONARY PATHWAY THAT LED TO THE EMERGENCE OF HUMANS. TO DATE, MANY QUESTIONS REGARDING THE EVOLUTION OF BIPEDALISM REMAIN UNANSWERED. THIS CAREER PROJECT INVESTIGATES THE EVOLUTION OF HUMAN BIPEDAL WALKING AND RUNNING BY ANALYZING FOSSIL FOOTPRINTS THROUGH THE COMBINED APPLICATION OF FIELD, EXPERIMENTAL AND COMPUTATIONAL METHODS. TRAINING AND HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE IN PALEOANTHROPOLOGICAL METHODS ARE PROVIDED TO STUDENTS AT DIFFERENT EDUCATION LEVELS. A NEW COURSE-BASED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE (CURE), COMBINED WITH INDIVIDUALLY MENTORED RESEARCH EXPERIENCES, PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO DIRECTLY CONTRIBUTE TO THE LABORATORY ANALYSES THAT ARE ESSENTIAL TO THE PROJECT. OUTREACH ACTIVITIES ENGAGE COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO LIVE IN THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY OF FOSSIL FOOTPRINT SITES, THROUGH AN ONGOING PARTNERSHIP AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF A COMMUNITY-LED CULTURAL HERITAGE MUSEUM. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE QUATERNARY PERIOD THREE FOSSIL HOMININ SPECIES ? HOMO ERECTUS, HOMO HABILIS, AND PARANTHROPUS BOISEI WERE THOUGHT TO HAVE INHABITED THE SAME LANDSCAPES. THE CURRENT CONSENSUS IS THAT THEIR COHABITATION WAS ENABLED BY DIFFERENT SETS OF ADAPTATIONS, AND THAT HOMO ERECTUS WAS THE ONLY ONE (AND THE FIRST HUMAN ANCESTOR) TO USE A MODERN HUMAN-LIKE PATTERN OF WALKING AND RUNNING. HOWEVER, THE FOSSIL DATA THAT CAN SPEAK TO THIS ARE LIMITED AND THE INTERPRETATIONS INCONCLUSIVE. THE FIELD EXCAVATIONS IN THIS PROJECT SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE VOLUME OF DATA AVAILABLE TO TEST LONG-STANDING HYPOTHESES ABOUT THE EVOLUTION OF HUMAN BIPEDALISM. THROUGH LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS, NEW ANALYTICAL METHODS ARE DEVELOPED TO RELATE FOOTPRINT MORPHOLOGY TO FOOT MORPHOLOGY AND BIOMECHANICS, ALLOWING FOR DETAILED UNDERSTANDINGS OF FOSSIL HUMAN LOCOMOTION. THE PROJECT ALSO ADVANCES METHODS FOR FINDING, EXCAVATING, AND ANALYZING FOSSIL FOOTPRINTS, OPENING NEW AVENUES FOR THESE DATA TO ADDRESS MAJOR QUESTIONS IN HUMAN EVOLUTION. THE AIM OF THE JXS PROJECT IS TO ENHANCE STUDENT WELLBEING, INCREASE HELP SEEKING AND AWARENESS OF SUICIDE AND MENTAL HEALTH/SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER (MH/SUD) PREVENTION, AND DECREASE SUICIDE/OVERDOSE EVENTS. THE GEOGRAPHIC CATCHMENT AREA FOR THE JXS PROJECT IS THE PITTSBURGH METROPOLITAN AREA, SPECIFICALLY, THE STUDENTS AT CHATHAM UNIVERSITY, THEIR FAMILIES, AND THE CLIENTS/PATIENTS THAT CHATHAM’S SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES GRADUATE STUDENTS SERVE. ABOUT A THIRD OF GRADUATE STUDENTS STAY IN STATE; THUS THE JXS PROJECT WILL TO POSITIVELY IMPACT SUICIDE AND MH/SUD PREVENTION IN PENNSYLVANIA. CHATHAM HAS APPROXIMATELY 2,700 STUDENTS. A SMALL NUMBER IDENTIFY AS VETERANS OR HISPANIC; MOST ARE WHITE AND FEMALE. FOUR PERCENT OF STUDENTS IDENTIFY AS ASIAN, 6% BLACK, 1% MULTIRACIAL, 4% INTERNATIONAL; 2% IDENTIFY AS TRANS*. AMONG UNDERGRADUATES, 16% ARE FIRST GENERATION STUDENTS; 23% RECEIVE PELL GRANTS. ABOUT 8% OF STUDENTS RECEIVE SERVICES AT THE COUNSELING CENTER; MALES AND STUDENTS WHO IDENTIFY AS BLACK OR ASIAN ARE UNDERSERVED. CHATHAM SAW A 40% INCREASE IN ENROLLMENT IN THE LAST DECADE, STRAINING INFRASTRUCTURE, INCLUDING SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS HOLDING MARGINALIZED IDENTITIES AND STUDENTS WHO ARE DISTRESSED OR AT RISK OF SUICIDE OR OVERDOSE. WE SEEK TO INCREASE THE SERVICES OFFERED, THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS SERVED, AND TO REDUCE DISPARITIES IN SERVICE USE SO ALL STUDENTS ARE WELL SERVED. THE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE JXS PROJECT ARE TO: 1) ENHANCE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES BY INCREASING STAFFING, CONSULTATION, AND SERVICES OFFERED; 2) INCREASE MESSAGING CAMPAIGNS TO PREVENT SUICIDE AND MENTAL HEALTH/SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS; 3) INCREASE MESSAGING CAMPAIGNS TO PROMOTE HELP SEEKING BEHAVIORS; 4) IDENTIFY AND SERVE STUDENTS AT RISK OF SUICIDE BY TRAINING FACULTY, STAFF, AND STUDENTS; AND 5) MINIMIZE SUICIDE EVENTS BY DISSEMINATING SUICIDE PREVENTION RESOURCES AND DECREASING ACCESS TO LETHAL MEANS. WE WILL MEET THESE GOALS BY DEVELOPING AN ADVISORY TEAM WITH EXPERTS FROM WESTERN PSYCHIATRIC INSTITUTE & CLINIC AND AMERICAN FOUNDATION FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION AS WELL AS ASSISTANCE FROM JED; ADDING A PART-TIME COUNSELOR; INCREASING SUPPORT GROUPS AND PROGRAMMING; AND COLLABORATING WITH STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS TO TAILOR MESSAGING CAMPAIGNS TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF SERVICES, SUICIDE AND MH/SUD PREVENTION AND INCREASE HELP-SEEKING. MESSAGING CAMPAIGNS WILL PUBLICIZE LOCAL, STATE, AND NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION RESOURCES, WARMLINES, AND OVERDOSE PREVENTION RESOURCES. COMPUTER SIMULATIONS OF MOLECULES AND MATERIALS ARE ESSENTIAL TOOLS IN MODERN CHEMISTRY, BUT CALCULATING PROPERTIES LIKE VISCOSITY, DIFFUSION RATES, AND SPECTRA FROM THESE SIMULATIONS CAN REQUIRE SIGNIFICANT COMPUTATIONAL TIME AND RESOURCES. THE CHALLENGE ASSOCIATED WITH OBTAINING ACCURATE CORRELATION FUNCTIONS THAT CAN PROVIDE PHYSICAL INSIGHT AND ALLOW THE CALCULATION OF TRANSPORT COEFFICIENTS AND SPECTRA FROM SIMULATIONS OFTEN LIMITS RESEARCHERS' ABILITY TO STUDY COMPLEX SYSTEMS OF INTEREST. PROFESSOR PFALZGRAFF AND HIS STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP FORMALLY EXACT GENERALIZED MASTER EQUATION (GME) APPROACHES THAT CAN BE APPLIED TO ANY SYSTEM TO CALCULATE CORRELATION FUNCTIONS ACCURATELY AND EFFICIENTLY FROM MOLECULAR DYNAMICS SIMULATIONS. THEIR STUDIES COULD OPEN THE DOOR TO MORE EFFICIENT CALCULATIONS OF TRANSPORT PROPERTIES AND SPECTRA IN A WIDE VARIETY OF COMPLEX CONDENSED PHASE SYSTEMS RELEVANT TO DRUG DESIGN, ADVANCED MATERIALS, AND ENERGY PRODUCTION. THIS WORK WILL ALSO CREATE COMPREHENSIVE PATHWAYS FOR TRAINING UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN THEORETICAL CHEMISTRY RESEARCH USING EARLY RESEARCH EXPOSURE, INTEGRATING TRAINING IN PROGRAMMING AND MATHEMATICS WITH RESEARCH, MULTI-LEVEL MENTORING, AND OPEN-SOURCE CODE DEVELOPMENT. THIS WORK SEEKS TO DEVELOP METHODS THAT EXTRACT MAXIMUM INFORMATION FROM LIMITED SIMULATION DATA BY USING MEMORY KERNELS THAT ENCODE HOW THE ENVIRONMENT INFLUENCES THE DYNAMICS OF OBSERVABLE OF INTEREST. IN MANY CONDENSED PHASE SYSTEMS, THESE MEMORY KERNELS DECAY TO ZERO MORE RAPIDLY THAN THE CORRELATION FUNCTIONS THEMSELVES, ALLOWING RESEARCHERS TO RUN SHORT SIMULATIONS TO OBTAIN THE MEMORY KERNEL AND THEN USE THE GME TO PREDICT LONG-TIME BEHAVIOR WITH MINIMAL ADDITIONAL COMPUTATIONAL COST. THE RESEARCH TEAM WILL OPTIMIZE COLLOCATION-BASED NUMERICAL METHODS FOR EXTRACTING MEMORY KERNELS FROM SIMULATION DATA AND EXPLORE ALTERNATIVE MATHEMATICAL FORMULATIONS THAT ACCELERATE MEMORY KERNEL DECAY. GIVEN THE SIGNIFICANT EXTENT OF INVASIONS IN CONTEMPORARY FORESTS, THESE PLANTS ARE LIKELY TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF PRECIPITATED WATER ULTIMATELY DELIVERED TO RIVERS AND STREAMS. GIVEN THE UBIQUITY OF SEVERE PLANT INVASIONS THROUGHOUT AMERICAN FORESTS, THESE INVESTIGATORS WILL ASSESS THE EFFECT OF INVASIVE PLANTS ON WATER BUDGETS AND HOW THE HYDROLOGIC CYCLE RESPOND TO FOREST REHABILITATION AND REMEDIATION. THE RESEARCHERS WILL ENGAGE IN UNDERSTORY RESTORATION PROJECTS TO ERADICATE INVASIVE PLANTS AND REPLANT NATIVE SPECIES WITH THE GOAL TO RESTORING WATER AVAILABILITY. THE FINDINGS WILL PROVIDE INSIGHTS INTO THE PROFOUND CHANGES UNDERWAY IN EASTERN FORESTS THAT, IF NOT ADDRESSED, COULD RESULT IN SUBSTANTIAL REDUCTIONS OF WATER AVAILABLE FOR HUMAN USE. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL INVESTIGATE INVASIVE PLANT SPECIES IMPACT ON FOREST WATER BUDGET BY REHABILITATING A FOREST ON CHATHAM UNIVERSITY CAMPUS IN PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA BY REMOVING INVASIVE SPECIES, REPLANTING NATIVE SPECIES, AND CONSTRUCTING DEER-EXCLUSION FENCES, TO KEEP OUT DEER THAT FEED ON NATIVE SPECIES. MOST OF THE ~400-ACRE CAMPUS IS COMPOSED OF SECONDARY-GROWTH FOREST WITH UNDERSTORIES DOMINATED BY INVASIVE SPECIES COMMON THROUGHOUT THE NORTHEASTERN UNITED STATES. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL DESIGN EXPERIMENTS TO REHABILITATE FOREST PLOTS THROUGH INVASIVE SPECIES REMOVAL, EXCLUDING DEER USING FENCES, AND REPLANTING NATIVE SPECIES. HIGH-FREQUENCY WEATHER DATA AND SOIL MOISTURE MEASUREMENTS WILL BE COLLECTED IN RESTORED AND CONTROL PLOTS TO CREATE A WATER BUDGET FOR THE FOREST TO ASSESS AND QUANTIFY THE EXTENT TO WHICH INVASIVE PLANT SPECIES IMPACT SOIL WATER. THE PROJECT WILL PROVIDE HANDS-ON RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, INTEGRATE THE STUDENTS INTO HYDROLOGY, GEOSCIENCE AND STEM. THE PROJECT WILL FACILITATE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A LONG-TERM ECOHYDROLOGY OBSERVATORY ON THE CHATHAM UNIVERSITY CAMPUS IN PENNSYLVANIA. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE NOT PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.

COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: OPUS: PERMUTATIONAL BIOMETRY: SYNTHESIZING THE ANALYTICS OF DATA ANALYSIS IN ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION -IN THIS PROJECT, THE INVESTIGATORS WILL SYNTHESIZE THEIR WORK IN STATISTICAL THEORY. THE ANALYSIS OF BIOLOGICAL DATA HAS LONG BEEN ACCOMPLISHED USING STANDARD (PARAMETRIC) STATISTICAL METHODS. HOWEVER, THESE TOOLS LACK SOLUTIONS FOR MANY COMPLEX QUESTIONS. AS AN ALTERNATIVE, RESAMPLING OF DATA USING COMPUTERS PROVIDES A GENERAL PROCEDURE THAT CAN REPLACE TRADITIONAL METHODS IN CASES WHERE THEY ARE INSUFFICIENT. THESE NEW METHODS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO PROVIDE A TOOL FOR BIOLOGISTS THAT IS LESS RESTRICTIVE THAN TRADITIONAL TESTS. A FULL-LENGTH BOOK WILL BE PRODUCED AND MADE FREELY AVAILABLE PROVIDING BROAD IMPACTS. WEB-BASED TUTORIALS DEMONSTRATING ALL TOPICS IN THE BOOK WILL ALSO BE PROVIDED. BOTH PRODUCTS WILL LEVERAGE EXISTING SOFTWARE THE INVESTIGATORS HAVE DEVELOPED AND DISTRIBUTED FREELY TO THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY. BY SYNTHESIZING 25 YEARS OF PERMUTATION-BASED ANALYTICS THEY HAVE DEVELOPED, THE INVESTIGATORS WILL ARRIVE AT AN ENTIRELY NEW PHILOSOPHY FOR PERFORMING DATA ANALYSIS IN THE BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES. THIS NEW PARADIGM RESULTS FROM THE UNION OF THEIR METHODS IN FOUR INTERRELATED AREAS: 1) RESAMPLING OF RESIDUALS IN A PERMUTATION PROCEDURE (RRPP), 2) PERMUTATION-BASED EFFECT SIZES, 3) PERMUTATION-BASED PAIRWISE COMPARISONS, AND 4) PERMUTATION-BASED EVALUATION OF INDEPENDENT OR CORRELATED DATASETS. THE RESULT WILL BE A BIOMETRIC PERSPECTIVE THAT EMPHASIZES BOTH HYPOTHESIS TESTING AND BIOLOGICAL SIGNAL STRENGTH DETERMINATION, WHERE THE GENERATION OF EMPIRICAL SAMPLING DISTRIBUTIONS ENABLES BOTH COMPONENTS SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE APPROACH IS BOTH UNIVARIATE AND MULTIVARIATE, AND CAN BE USED TO EVALUATE TRENDS IN INDEPENDENT, OR CORRELATED OBSERVATIONS. WHEN COMPLETE THE SYNTHESIS WILL PROVIDE A COMPREHENSIVE LEARNING PLATFORM, THAT COMBINES THOROUGH EXPLANATION OF PERMUTATIONAL ANALYTICS, AND INTEGRATES THIS EMERGING STATISTICAL PERSPECTIVE WITH HANDS-ON TUTORIALS THAT UTILIZE EXISTING SOFTWARE FOR IMPLEMENTATION. THIS ADVANCE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO TRANSFORM HOW BIOLOGISTS CONDUCT THEIR RESEARCH, AS THE RRPP SYNTHETIC PARADIGM PROVIDES ANALYTICAL TOOLS THAT ARE CAPABLE OF ADDRESSING HYPOTHESES THAT PARAMETRIC PROCEDURES CANNOT.
