WANI WACIN (I WANT TO LIVE): BUILDING YOUTH RESILIENCE - THE SACRED PIPE RESOURCE CENTER (SPRC) WILL IMPLEMENT WANI WACIN (I WANT TO LIVE): BUILDING YOUTH RESILIENCE, A CULTURALLY GROUNDED SUICIDE PREVENTION INITIATIVE FOR AMERICAN INDIAN AND ALASKA NATIVE YOUTH FROM BIRTH THROUGH AGE 24 ACROSS NORTH DAKOTA'S TRIBAL NATIONS AND URBAN NATIVE COMMUNITIES, INCLUDING SPIRIT LAKE, STANDING ROCK, TURTLE MOUNTAIN, THREE AFFILIATED TRIBES, SISSETON WAHPETON OYATE, BISMARCK-MANDAN, FARGO, GRAND FORKS, MINOT, AND WILLISTON. THE INITIATIVE WILL EMPHASIZE YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS AT ELEVATED RISK, SUICIDE ATTEMPT SURVIVORS, AND INDIVIDUALS AFFECTED BY SUICIDE LOSS. INTEGRATING SOURCES OF STRENGTH WITH INDIGENOUS TEACHINGS, ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE TRADITIONAL TEACHINGS, TALKING CIRCLES, LAND-BASED LEARNING, YOUTH LEADERSHIP, AND MENTAL WELLNESS EDUCATION. WITHIN 4 MONTHS, A 6–8-MEMBER NATIVE YOUTH SUBCOMMITTEE WILL GUIDE DEVELOPMENT AND DISSEMINATION OF A WANI WACIN VIDEO AND DISCUSSION CURRICULUM. OVER 5 YEARS, 250 AMERICAN INDIAN YOUTH WILL PARTICIPATE IN RESILIENCE-BUILDING ACTIVITIES; 500 YOUTH, PARENTS, EDUCATORS, AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS WILL RECEIVE PREVENTION EDUCATION; 100 ADULTS WILL BE TRAINED IN SUICIDE PREVENTION, MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS, AND REFERRALS; AND YOUTH WILL LEAD 12 WELLNESS, CULTURAL, OR PREVENTION EVENTS. BY EACH YEAR-END, 80% OF PARTICIPATING YOUTH WILL DEMONSTRATE GAINS IN RESILIENCE, COPING, CULTURAL IDENTITY, OR HOPEFULNESS; BY PROJECT END, 75% WILL REPORT ACCESS TO A TRUSTED ADULT OR MENTOR.
