THESE GRID DEPLOYMENTS WILL BE GUIDED BY THE DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF THE WARN ASSESSMENT TOOL. THE WARN TOOL WILL ASSESS THE VALUE OF RESILIENCE UPGRADES BY ESTIMATING THE EXPECTED VALUE OF AVOIDED LOSS OF PROPERTY, NATURAL RESOURCES, GRID ASSETS, AND STAKEHOLDER-IDENTIFIED CULTURAL AND COMMUNITY RESOURCES FROM UTILITY-IGNITED WILDFIRES. WARN WILL USE STATE-OF-THE-ART WILDFIRE IGNITION AND PROPAGATION MODELING USING GRID DATA, TERRAIN DATA, AND HISTORICAL WEATHER DATA. THE ASSESSMENT CAPABILITY PROVIDED BY WARN AND TESTED ON THE WARN CONSORTIUM ELECTRIC GRIDS WILL ENABLE COOPERATIVES TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE VALUE OF RESILIENT GRID UPGRADES AND JUSTIFY INVESTMENT IN THEM. HOLY CROSS TRIBES COMMUNITY FOOD PROGRAM IS AIMED AT REDUCING FOOD INSECURITY BY PROVIDING FRESH PRODUCE AND MEAT BOXES ON A MONTHLY BASIS TO SUPPORT THE YEAR-ROUND NUTRITIONAL NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY. THE COMMUNITY FOOD PROGRAM WILL BEGIN AS SOON AS PRACTICALLY POSSIBLE WITH MONTHLY HOUSEHOLD FOOD DISTRIBUTION ANTICIPATED TO CONTINUE THROUGH WINTER 2025. WARMING OCEAN WATERS. THE NORTHERN STAR CORAL, ASTRANGIA POCULATA, A COMMON SPECIES FOUND IN TEMPERATE COASTAL WATERS OF EASTERN NORTH AMERICA, EXHIBITS A FLEXIBLE SYMBIOSIS WITH ITS ALGAL SYMBIONT. ADJACENT COLONIES, SUBJECTED TO THE SAME ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS, CAN BE FOUND WITH FEW TO MANY ALGAL SYMBIONTS; SOME COLONIES APPEAR STARK WHITE, SEEMINGLY BLEACHED, WHEREAS OTHERS ARE BROWN IN COLOR, CONTAINING PHOTOSYNTHESIZING ALGAL SYMBIONTS, AND YET BOTH TYPES OF COLONIES CAN BE HEALTHY. THIS UNIQUE ASPECT OF THE BIOLOGY OF A. THE PROJECT WILL SUPPORT THE EDUCATION AND RESEARCH TRAINING OF NUMEROUS UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS, AND WILL SUPPORT OUTREACH EFFORTS TO ENGAGE THE PUBLIC IN TEMPERATE CORAL SYMBIOSIS AND CONSERVATION. WHILE TROPICAL CORALS EXHIBIT ONE OF THE CLASSIC EXAMPLES OF MUTUALISMS IN BIOLOGY, THE FITNESS COSTS, BENEFITS, AND TRADEOFFS OF CORAL-ALGAL SYMBIOSES ARE CHALLENGING TO EXPLICITLY TEST BECAUSE THEIR SYMBIOSIS IS OBLIGATE. ASTRANGIA POCULATA, A COMMON SUBTIDAL CORAL FOUND IN TEMPERATE COASTAL WATERS OF EASTERN NORTH AMERICA, MAY PERMIT THIS TYPE OF TESTING BECAUSE IT EXHIBITS A FACULTATIVE SYMBIOSIS WITH ITS ALGAL SYMBIONT, BREVIOLUM PSYGMOPHILUM. BY THEIR VERY NATURE, FACULTATIVE SYMBIOSES ARE EVOLUTIONARY, ECOLOGICAL, AND PHYSIOLOGICAL PUZZLES THAT ARE INTRIGUING AT MANY LEVELS OF BIOLOGICAL INQUIRY, AND THEIR ENERGETIC RAMIFICATIONS MAY BE BEST DISENTANGLED USING INTEGRATIVE AND COMPARATIVE APPROACHES. MELANOGASTER, ALLOWING CHANGES IN PROTEIN SEQUENCE AND STRUCTURE TO BE CORRELATED WITH FUNCTIONALITY AND SUBCELLULAR LOCALIZATION. SECOND, CRISPR-MEDIATED GENOME EDITING, FERTILITY ASSAYS AND CYTOLOGICAL ANALYSES OF SPERMATOGENESIS WILL BE USED TO TEST THESE GENES? PRIOR STUDIES HAVE INVESTIGATED NTRYX WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF CANONICAL TWO-COMPONENT SIGNALING. SPECIFICALLY, THE RESEARCH WILL EXPLORE TECHNIQUES FOR IMPROVING STUDENTS' ANALOGICAL REASONING ABILITY. THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE HAS SHOWN ANALOGY TO BE A POWERFUL TOOL IN SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY. AND THERE IS ABUNDANT EVIDENCE FROM LABORATORY AND CLASSROOM STUDIES THAT ANALOGICAL COMPARISON CAN IMPROVE STUDENTS' ABILITY TO LEARN, ESPECIALLY IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE. FOR EXAMPLE, READING THAT SOUND WAVES ARE ANALOGOUS TO WATER WAVES CAN GIVE STUDENTS INSIGHT INTO HOW SOUND BEHAVES. YET NOT ALL STUDENTS BENEFIT EQUALLY FROM ANALOGICAL TEACHING. THE FIRST GOAL OF THE RESEARCH IS TO DISCOVER HOW BEST TO EQUIP STUDENTS WITH METHODS FOR ENGAGING PRODUCTIVELY WITH ANALOGICAL COMPARISONS OF ALL SORTS?IN SHORT, TO BECOME BETTER THINKERS AND LEARNERS. THE SECOND GOAL IS TO TEST WHETHER ACQUIRING THESE SKILLS WILL IMPROVE STUDENTS' ABILITY TO LEARN IN A NEW SCIENTIFIC ARENA: EVOLUTION. OVERALL, THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE NEW INSIGHTS INTO ANALOGICAL REASONING AND LEARNING AS A FUNDAMENTAL ABILITY AND INTO HOW IT CAN BE TRAINED. THE PROJECT WILL DEVELOP AN ANALOGICAL TRAINING PROGRAM FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TARGETING THREE INTERSECTING FACETS OF ANALOGICAL THINKING: (1) STRATEGIES FOR PROCESSING ANALOGICAL MAPPINGS, INCLUDING ALIGNING TWO EXAMPLES, DRAWING INFERENCES FROM ONE EXAMPLE TO ANOTHER, AND NOTING KEY DIFFERENCES; (2) METACOGNITIVE INSIGHT INTO THE NATURE AND USES OF ANALOGICAL THINKING; AND (3) ABILITY TO RECOGNIZE OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMPARISON. IN PHASE 1, ITERATIVE DESIGN AND EXPERIMENTAL METHODS WILL BE COMBINED TO DEVELOP AND TEST TRAINING COMPONENTS. IN PHASE 2, A COMPLETE TRAINING PROGRAM FOR IMPROVING ANALOGICAL REASONING AND SUPPORTING SCIENCE CONTENT LEARNING (SPECIFICALLY, ABOUT EVOLUTION) WILL BE TESTED. A GROUP THAT HAS RECEIVED ANALOGICAL TRAINING WILL BE COMPARED WITH A CONTROL GROUP ON THEIR ABILITY TO LEARN FROM ANALOGICAL COMPARISONS IN EVOLUTION AND IN OTHER TOPICS, USING A PRE-POST DESIGN. COMPUTING PROFESSIONALS NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE POSSIBILITIES AND LIMITATIONS OF COMPUTATION IN ORDER TO DESIGN EFFICIENT ALGORITHMS FOR PROBLEMS THAT CAN BE SOLVED IN PRACTICE, OR TO AVOID LARGE INVESTMENTS IN ATTEMPTS TO IMPLEMENT SOLUTIONS FOR PROBLEMS WHICH HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO REQUIRE UNREASONABLE AMOUNTS OF TIME OR OTHER RESOURCES. MODELING COMPUTATION IS AN IMPORTANT BUILDING BLOCK FOR THIS UNDERSTANDING, HOWEVER, STUDENTS OFTEN STRUGGLE WITH ABSTRACT MODELING AND VISUALIZATION. A PRIOR LEVEL 1 ENGAGED STUDENT LEARNING PROJECT RESULTED IN A PROTOTYPE TOOL WHICH PROVIDES IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK ON THE COMPUTATIONAL MODELS DESIGNED BY STUDENTS. THIS LEVEL 2 ENGAGED STUDENT LEARNING PROJECT AIMS TO ADD FEATURES TO THE TOOL, IMPROVE ITS USABILITY AND ADAPTABILITY, AND INVESTIGATE ITS IMPACT ON STUDENT PROBLEM-SOLVING AT A LARGER SCALE, IN DIFFERENT EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS. THE EXISTING AUTOMATED FEEDBACK FOR COMPUTING THEORY (AFCT) PROTOTYPE TOOL WAS BUILT ON THE WIDELY USED JAVA FORMAL LANGUAGES AND AUTOMATA PACKAGE (JFLAP) VISUALIZATION TOOL THAT AIDS STUDENTS IN LEARNING THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF FORMAL LANGUAGES AND AUTOMATA THEORY. THE ENHANCED TOOL DEVELOPED IN THIS PROJECT WILL INITIALLY BE DEPLOYED AND OUTCOMES ASSESSED IN THEORETICAL COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSES AT THE FIVE COLLABORATING INSTITUTIONS. IT WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE UNDER AN OPENSOURCE LICENSE TO ENABLE OTHERS TO USE AND MODIFY THE SOFTWARE TO SUIT THEIR NEEDS. THE RESEARCH QUESTIONS ARE FOCUSED ON UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACTS OF THE TOOL ON STUDENTS' BEHAVIOR, PERFORMANCE, AND LEARNING OF COMPUTING THEORY; WHETHER STUDENTS FROM DIFFERENT TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS ARE IMPACTED IN SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT WAYS; AND THE EFFECTS OF VARIOUS TYPES OF FEEDBACK ON STUDENTS' LEARNING. THE TOOL'S ADDED FUNCTIONALITY, IMPROVED USABILITY, AND AVAILABILITY AS OPENSOURCE SOFTWARE WILL ENCOURAGE ITS ADOPTION AT OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INCREASE ITS EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS. CHAOS TERRAIN AND DOUBLE RIDGES MAY BOTH FORM IN RESPONSE TO NEAR-SURFACE WATER BODIES THAT DEFORM THE SURFACE. NEAR-SURFACE MELT COULD BE SOURCED DIRECTLY FROM THE SUBSURFACE OCEAN OR COULD BE GENERATED LOCALLY BY TIDAL HEATING OR SHEAR-HEATING BENEATH TIDALLY-DRIVEN STRIKE-SLIP FAULTS. IN ADDITION TO PLAYING A PROFOUND ROLE IN THE GEOLOGIC EVOLUTION OF EUROPA NEAR-SURFACE MELT BODIES COULD BE POTENTIALLY HABITABLE ENVIRONMENTS AND THE MIGRATION OF NEAR-SURFACE MELT COULD ALLOW FOR CHEMICAL EXCHANGE BETWEEN THE SURFACE AND SUBSURFACE OCEAN. WHILE MANY GEOLOGIC OBSERVATIONS STRONGLY SUGGEST THE PRESENCE OF NEAR-SURFACE MELT PHYSICAL MODELS FOR HOW NEAR-SURFACE MELTS ARE GENERATED FACE MANY CHALLENGES. MELTS WOULD BE THERMALLY AND GRAVITATIONALLY UNSTABLE AND COULD QUICKLY FREEZE OR MIGRATE DOWN TOWARD THE OCEAN. A MORE ROBUST PHYSICAL MODEL IS REQUIRED TO DEEPEN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF NEAR-SURFACE MELT BODIES ONE THAT SELF-CONSISTENTLY TREATS TIDAL DEFORMATION EUTECTIC MELTING MELT-MIGRATION AND ICE SHELL CONVECTION. UNDERSTANDING THE DYNAMICS OF NEAR-SURFACE MELT FEATURES INCLUDING THEIR SIZE DISTRIBUTION LONGEVITY AVERAGE MELT FRACTION AND SALINITY IS ESSENTIAL FOR BUILDING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF EUROPA S EVOLUTION AND TO INTERPRETING DATA COLLECTED AT EUROPA BY FUTURE SPACECRAFT. IN ORDER TO ADDRESS OUTSTANDING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FORMATION AND EVOLUTION OF NEAR-SURFACE MELTS WE WILL: 1) INVESTIGATE FEEDBACKS BETWEEN TIDAL HEATING FAULT SLIDING AND MELT GENERATION ALONG STRIKE-SLIP FAULTS 2) ESTIMATE THE RATE OF DOWNWARD MIGRATION BY POROUS FLOW AND HYDROFRACTURE 3) INVESTIGATE THE EVOLUTION OF PERCHED BODIES OF WATER AND ASSOCIATED ICE BLISTERS ON ANTARCTIC ICE SHELVES CALLED DOLINES TO PLACE CONSTRAINTS ON THE DYNAMICS OF PERCHED MELTS ON EUROPA. METHODOLOGY: WE WILL DEVELOP A NUMERICAL MODEL TO EXPLORE THE COUPLED PROCESSES OF TIDAL/SHEAR HEATING MELT GENERATION MELT MIGRATION AND MELT-FRACTURE INTERACTION IN EUROPA S ICE SHELL. WE WILL BUILD ON OUR EXISTING TWO-DIMENSIONAL FINITE ELEMENT CODES IN MATLAB AND COMSOL. OUR TREATMENT OF MELT MIGRATION WILL BE INFORMED BY STUDIES OF THE EVOLUTION OF SEA-ICE MELT MIGRATION IN TERRESTRIAL MAGMA CHAMBERS AND THE DRAINAGE OF SUPRA-GLACIAL LAKES THROUGH CREVASSES. USING OUR NUMERICAL MODEL WE WILL MAKE QUANTIFIED PREDICTIONS ON THE LONGEVITY SPATIAL EXTENT MELT FRACTION AND SALINITY IN POSSIBLE NEAR-SURFACE MELT BODIES ON EUROPA. WE WILL PLACE CONSTRAINTS ON THE HEATING RATES SLIDING RATES AND PERMEABILITIES REQUIRED TO GENERATE AND MAINTAIN NEAR SURFACE MELTS. BY TRACKING THE MOVEMENT OF SALTS THROUGH THE ICE SHELL WE WILL ALSO BUILD AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THE CHEMICAL EVOLUTION OF THE ICE SHELL COUPLES WITH GEOLOGIC ACTIVITY. RELEVANCE OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH: THE PROPOSED WORK WILL FURTHER OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE MYRIAD OF GEOLOGICAL PROCESSES AFFECTING THE SOLAR SYSTEM BY PLACING CONSTRAINTS ON HOW NEAR-SURFACE MELT FEATURES ON EUROPA LIKELY FORM AND EVOLVE. THE PURPOSE OF THIS AGREEMENT IS TO PURCHASE AND DISTRIBUTE LOCAL FOOD TARGETING PURCHASES FROM SOCIALLY DISADVANTAGED FARMERS AND RANCHERS. HOLY CROSS TRIBE (HCT) IS A FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED SOVEREIGN TRIBAL GOVERNMENT THAT WORKS TIRELESSLY TO SERVE ITS TRIBAL MEMBERS AND OTHER LOCAL RESIDENTS OF HOLY CROSS, A REMOTE ALASKAN COMMUNITY LOCATED IN THE YUKON-KUSKOKWIM DELTA ALONG THE YUKON RIVER. HOLY CROSS IS LOCATED OFF THE ROAD SYSTEM AND IS ONLY ACCESSIBLE BY BOAT, PLANE, AND SNOWMACHINE. HOLY CROSS TRIBES COMMUNITY FOOD PROGRAM IS AIMED AT REDUCING FOOD INSECURITY BY PROVIDING FRESH PRODUCE AND MEAT BOXES ON A MONTHLY BASIS TO SUPPORT THE YEAR-ROUND NUTRITIONAL NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY. THE COMMUNITY FOOD PROGRAM WILL BEGIN AS SOON AS PRACTICALLY POSSIBLE WITH MONTHLY HOUSEHOLD FOOD DISTRIBUTION ANTICIPATED TO CONTINUE THROUGH WINTER 2025. QUARTERLY PERFORMANCE REPORTS WILL BE SUBMITTED TO CAPTURE THE NUMBER OF PRODUCERS, SOCIALLY DISADVANTAGED FARMERS AND RANCHERS, DISTRIBUTION SITES, AND UNDERSERVED LOCATIONS AS WELL AS FUNDS EXPENDED FOR EACH CATEGORY. ANNUAL REPORTS WILL PROVIDE PERCENTAGES OF NEW MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES AND PURCHASES DISTRIBUTED BEYOND CURRENT FOOD DISTRIBUTION NETWORKS. HOLY CROSS TRIBES COMMUNITY FOOD PROGRAM AIMS TO PURCHASE FRESH PRODUCE AND MEAT FOR HOUSEHOLD DISTRIBUTION FROM ALASKA SUPPLIES. HOLY CROSS TRIBES COMMUNITY FOOD PROGRAM WILL UTILIZE THE SUCCESSFUL SYSTEMS AND PROCESSES FOR COMMUNITY FOOD DISTRIBUTION DEVELOPED DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. HOLY CROSS TRIBES COMMUNITY FOOD PROGRAM WILL ALLOW THE TRIBE TO CREATE A MODEL WITHIN THE REGION FOR INCREASING FOOD SECURITY THROUGH HOUSEHOLD DISTRIBUTION PROGRAMS. RECIPIENTS. APPROXIMATELY SIXTY (60) FAMILIES – COMPRISING NEARLY TWO HUNDRED (200) INDIVIDUALS – IN HOLY CROSS WILL BENEFIT FROM HOLY CROSS TRIBES COMMUNITY FOOD PROGRAM. PRODUCERS. HOLY CROSS TRIBE ANTICIPATES PURCHASING FOOD SUPPLIES FROM AT LEAST THREE (3) REGIONAL SUPPLIERS. THE TRIBE SOLICITED QUOTES FROM REGIONAL SUPPLIERS ACROSS THE STATE DURING THE HEIGHT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC WITH THREE (3) MEAT SUPPLIERS AND ONE (1) PRODUCE SUPPLIER RESPONDING TO THE REQUEST FOR QUOTES. SINCE THEN, THE TRIBE HAS DEVELOPED ONGOING RELATIONSHIPS WITH A COUPLE OF THESE SUPPLIERS FOR THE PURCHASE OF MEAT AND PRODUCE. THE TRIBE IS CONFIDENT THAT THERE WILL BE CONTINUED INTEREST FROM ITS SUPPLIERS TO MEET THE DEMAND THAT WILL BE CREATED BY FUNDING OF THE HOLY CROSS TRIBE COMMUNITY FOOD PROGRAM. THE RECIPIENT DOES NOT INTEND TO SUBAWARD FUNDS.

COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: RUI: TESTING HYPOTHESES OF THE REPRODUCTIVE ENERGETIC TRADEOFFS OF FACULTATIVE SYMBIOSES -CORAL SYMBIOSES ARE COMPRISED OF ANIMAL, ALGAL, AND MICROBIAL MEMBERS. THE PRIMARY ASSOCIATION, BETWEEN THE CORAL ANIMAL AND ITS PHOTOSYNTHETIC ALGAL SYMBIONT, IS CRUCIAL FOR THE CORAL HOST; MOST TROPICAL CORALS ARE HIGHLY DEPENDENT ON THEIR ALGAL SYMBIONTS AND WILL BLEACH AND SUBSEQUENTLY DIE IF THIS SYMBIOSIS IS DISRUPTED BY POOR ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS, E.G. WARMING OCEAN WATERS. THE NORTHERN STAR CORAL, ASTRANGIA POCULATA, A COMMON SPECIES FOUND IN TEMPERATE COASTAL WATERS OF EASTERN NORTH AMERICA, EXHIBITS A FLEXIBLE SYMBIOSIS WITH ITS ALGAL SYMBIONT. ADJACENT COLONIES, SUBJECTED TO THE SAME ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS, CAN BE FOUND WITH FEW TO MANY ALGAL SYMBIONTS; SOME COLONIES APPEAR STARK WHITE, SEEMINGLY BLEACHED, WHEREAS OTHERS ARE BROWN IN COLOR, CONTAINING PHOTOSYNTHESIZING ALGAL SYMBIONTS, AND YET BOTH TYPES OF COLONIES CAN BE HEALTHY. THIS UNIQUE ASPECT OF THE BIOLOGY OF A. POCULATA WITH ITS ALGAL SYMBIONT, BREVIOLUM PSYGMOPHILUM, WILL BE USED TO EXAMINE HOW SYMBIOSIS AFFECTS THE ENERGY CORALS DEVOTE TOWARDS THE BASIC TASKS REQUIRED OF ALL ORGANISMS: DEVELOPMENT, GROWTH, BODY MAINTENANCE, AND REPRODUCTION. GIVEN RAPIDLY DETERIORATING OCEAN CONDITIONS FOR MOST CORALS WORLDWIDE, UNDERSTANDING HOW CORALS ACQUIRE AND USE ENERGY WITH AND WITHOUT THEIR SYMBIONTS, IN DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS, IS IMPERATIVE. THE PROJECT WILL SUPPORT THE EDUCATION AND RESEARCH TRAINING OF NUMEROUS UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS, AND WILL SUPPORT OUTREACH EFFORTS TO ENGAGE THE PUBLIC IN TEMPERATE CORAL SYMBIOSIS AND CONSERVATION. WHILE TROPICAL CORALS EXHIBIT ONE OF THE CLASSIC EXAMPLES OF MUTUALISMS IN BIOLOGY, THE FITNESS COSTS, BENEFITS, AND TRADEOFFS OF CORAL-ALGAL SYMBIOSES ARE CHALLENGING TO EXPLICITLY TEST BECAUSE THEIR SYMBIOSIS IS OBLIGATE. ASTRANGIA POCULATA, A COMMON SUBTIDAL CORAL FOUND IN TEMPERATE COASTAL WATERS OF EASTERN NORTH AMERICA, MAY PERMIT THIS TYPE OF TESTING BECAUSE IT EXHIBITS A FACULTATIVE SYMBIOSIS WITH ITS ALGAL SYMBIONT, BREVIOLUM PSYGMOPHILUM. BY THEIR VERY NATURE, FACULTATIVE SYMBIOSES ARE EVOLUTIONARY, ECOLOGICAL, AND PHYSIOLOGICAL PUZZLES THAT ARE INTRIGUING AT MANY LEVELS OF BIOLOGICAL INQUIRY, AND THEIR ENERGETIC RAMIFICATIONS MAY BE BEST DISENTANGLED USING INTEGRATIVE AND COMPARATIVE APPROACHES. THERE ARE CERTAINLY FITNESS COSTS, BENEFITS, AND TRADEOFFS TO DIFFERENT SYMBIOTIC STATES, BUT UNLESS THE BENEFITS ARE PERFECTLY BALANCED ACROSS STATES, ONE WOULD PREDICT CONVERGENCE TOWARDS OR AWAY FROM SYMBIOSIS. IN A. POCULATA HOWEVER, MULTIPLE SYMBIOTIC STATES PERSIST IN NATURE, IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT TO EACH OTHER IN PHYSICAL SPACE. THIS STUDY WILL EXAMINE SYMBIOSIS FROM AN ENERGETIC PERSPECTIVE, QUANTIFYING THE EFFECTS OF SYMBIOTIC STATE ON REPRODUCTIVE INVESTMENT AND LARVAL PERFORMANCE, IMPORTANT LIFE HISTORY CHARACTERS AND MEASURES OF FITNESS. THE INVESTIGATORS WILL ALSO CONSTRUCT, PARAMETERIZE, AND VALIDATE A COMPREHENSIVE DYNAMIC ENERGY BUDGET MODEL FOR A. POCULATA - B. PSYGMOPHILUM, THE FIRST SUCH MODEL IN ANY SYSTEM TO EXPLORE ENERGETIC ACQUISITION, EXPENDITURE, AND NEEDS. UNDERSTANDING THE MOLECULAR INTERACTIONS REQUIRED FOR INSECT FERTILIZATION COULD ENABLE SCIENTISTS TO MANIPULATE THE REPRODUCTION OF SPECIES OF AGRICULTURAL OR BIOMEDICAL RELEVANCE. TO DATE, HOWEVER, LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT HOW INSECT SPERM TAKE ON THEIR NEEDLE-LIKE SHAPE AND RECOGNIZE EGGS TO FACILITATE ENTRY. THIS PROJECT USES THE TRACTABLE FRUIT FLY MODEL SYSTEM TO INVESTIGATE THESE QUESTIONS. ONE OBJECTIVE WILL INVESTIGATE SPERM COMPOSITION AND FUNCTION IN FLIES LACKING A GENE REQUIRED FOR EFFICIENT SPERM ENTRY INTO EGGS. ANOTHER OBJECTIVE WILL EVALUATE THE EXTENT TO WHICH THIS GENE, AND TWO OTHERS REQUIRED FOR SPERM HEAD SHAPING, SHARE CONSERVED FUNCTIONS ACROSS DIFFERENT FLY SPECIES. THIS PROJECT WILL EXPAND THE RESEARCH CAPACITY OF AN EXCLUSIVELY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTION, PREPARING MORE STUDENTS TO JOIN THE NATION?S SCIENTIFIC WORKFORCE. THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR?S LAB WILL PROVIDE IMMERSIVE, PAID SUMMER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS AND PARTICIPATE IN A MENTORING PROGRAM THAT ALLOWS NEW COLLEGE STUDENTS TO IMMEDIATELY JOIN RESEARCH LABS. IN PARALLEL, STUDENTS IN AN INTERMEDIATE-LEVEL GENETICS LAB COURSE WILL CONDUCT ORIGINAL RESEARCH TO IDENTIFY AN ADDITIONAL GENE REQUIRED FOR FLY SPERM TO ENTER EGGS. THIS PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE HOW LINEAGE-SPECIFIC ?ORPHAN? GENES CONTRIBUTE TO THE MATURATION AND FUNCTION OF SPERM IN MALE DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER AND EVALUATE THE EXTENT TO WHICH THESE GENES? FUNCTIONS ARE CONSERVED IN DIVERGENT FLY SPECIES. FIRST, ORTHOLOGS OF THESE GENES WILL BE TESTED FOR THEIR ABILITY TO FUNCTION IN D. MELANOGASTER, ALLOWING CHANGES IN PROTEIN SEQUENCE AND STRUCTURE TO BE CORRELATED WITH FUNCTIONALITY AND SUBCELLULAR LOCALIZATION. SECOND, CRISPR-MEDIATED GENOME EDITING, FERTILITY ASSAYS AND CYTOLOGICAL ANALYSES OF SPERMATOGENESIS WILL BE USED TO TEST THESE GENES? FUNCTIONS IN TWO DIVERGENT FLY SPECIES, DROSOPHILA ANANASSAE AND DROSOPHILA VIRILIS, ALLOWING DIRECT ASSESSMENT OF THEIR FUNCTIONAL CONSERVATION. THIRD, TARGETED GENETIC ANALYSES AND QUANTITATIVE PROTEOMICS WILL BE USED TO IDENTIFY DEFECTS IN SPERM PRODUCED BY MALES THAT LACK THE GENE REQUIRED FOR SPERM ENTRY INTO EGGS, WHICH HOLDS PROMISE TO IDENTIFY POTENTIALLY MORE CONSERVED PROTEINS THAT ACT AT FERTILIZATION. THIS PROJECT WILL ADVANCE KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNCTIONS AND EVOLUTION OF LINEAGE-SPECIFIC GENES WHILE PROVIDING MUCH-NEEDED MOLECULAR GENETIC DETAIL ABOUT SPERM-EGG INTERACTIONS, A PROCESS ABOUT WHICH SURPRISINGLY LITTLE IS KNOWN IN DROSOPHILA. THIS PROJECT WILL USE THE TRACTABLE FRUIT FLY MODEL SYSTEM TO INVESTIGATE HOW THREE YOUNG GENES, WHICH HAVE GAINED ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS IN MALE FERTILITY, EVOLVED NOVEL CAPABILITIES, INCLUDING PHYSICAL BINDING PARTNERS AND COMPLEX EXPRESSION PATTERNS. ULTIMATELY, THESE FINDINGS WILL SHED LIGHT ON THE KINDS OF GENETIC CHANGES A NEW GENE REQUIRES TO GAIN FUNCTIONALITY. THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO ENHANCE THE RESEARCH CAPACITY OF AN EXCLUSIVELY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTION, THUS PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO CONDUCT ORIGINAL RESEARCH. THE PI?S LAB WILL PARTICIPATE IN AN IMMERSIVE, PAID SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM FOR SECOND- AND THIRD-YEAR STUDENTS AND A COHORT-BASED MENTORING PROGRAM FOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS DESIGNED TO BOLSTER THE PERSISTENCE OF FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS FROM BACKGROUNDS HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN STEM FIELDS. THE HOST DEPARTMENT?S BIOINFORMATIC CURRICULUM WILL BE EXPANDED THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A LAB-BASED GENOMICS COURSE THAT WILL PROVIDE A COURSE-BASED RESEARCH EXPERIENCE TO UNDERGRADUATES WHO MAY NOT OTHERWISE PARTICIPATE IN ORIGINAL RESEARCH. THIS PROJECT WILL EXPLORE HOW NEWLY EVOLVED GENES THAT LIKELY AROSE FROM NON-PROTEIN-CODING DNA SEQUENCES ACQUIRE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS. IT WILL USE AS CASE STUDIES OF THREE GENES SHOWN PREVIOUSLY TO BE ESSENTIAL FOR SPERMATOGENESIS IN DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER. FIRST, AN EVOLUTIONARY APPROACH WILL BE USED TO ESTIMATE WHEN EACH GENE BECAME ESSENTIAL FOR REPRODUCTION AND TO IDENTIFY KEY AMINO ACIDS STRETCHES IMPORTANT FOR THE FUNCTION OF THE ENCODED PROTEIN. SPECIFICALLY, THE ABILITY OF BOTH EXTANT ORTHOLOGOUS PROTEIN SEQUENCES AND INFERRED ANCESTRAL SEQUENCES TO RESCUE D. MELANOGASTER FLIES LACKING AN ENDOGENOUS COPY OF THE GENE WILL BE MEASURED. THESE EXPERIMENTS WILL GENERATE TESTABLE HYPOTHESES ABOUT WHICH SEQUENCE FEATURES ARE REQUIRED FOR THESE PROTEINS? ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS IN EXTANT D. MELANOGASTER FLIES. SECOND, TO INVESTIGATE HOW NEWLY EVOLVED PROTEINS EVOLVE FUNCTIONS IN EXISTING CELLULAR NETWORKS AND GAIN INTERACTIONS WITH OTHER MOLECULES, A COMBINATION OF BIOCHEMICAL AND GENETIC APPROACHES WILL BE USED TO IDENTIFY INTERACTING PARTNERS OF EACH FOCAL PROTEIN. THIRD, THIS PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE HOW NEWLY EVOLVED GENES GAIN POST-TRANSCRIPTIONAL MECHANISMS OF GENE REGULATION AND THUS EVOLVE SPATIOTEMPORAL PATTERNS OF EXPRESSION. DESCRIPTION:THIS AGREEMENT PROVIDES ASSISTANCE TO HOLY CROSS TRIBE TO BUILD ITS CAPACITY TO ADMINISTER ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS ON INDIAN LANDS. ACTIVITIES:HOLY CROSS WILL USE THE FY23 GAP GRANT TO IMPROVE ENVIRONMENTAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF CAPACITY FOR FORMATTING AND SUBMITTING ALL REQUIRED REPORTS, BOOKKEEPING AND FINANCIAL REPORTING, DEVELOPING AND SUBMITTING THE IGAP WORK PLAN PROPOSALS, AND UNDERSTANDING ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS; IMPROVE SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT USING THE TRIBE'S SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN AND THROUGH BETTER COMMUNICATION WITH LOCAL AGENCIES; AND CLEAN UP THE COMMUNITY BY REMOVING ABANDONED VEHICLES/ HAZARDOUS WASTE/WHITE GOODS. SUBRECIPIENT:NO SUBAWARDS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS ASSISTANCE AGREEMENT.OUTCOMES:THE DELIVERABLES WILL BE PROGRESS REPORTS, TRIP REPORTS, FINANCIAL POLICIES, PARTICIPATION CERTIFICATES, PHOTOS, AND A BACKHAUL INVENTORY. THE TRIBE WILL HAVE AN ESTABLISHED ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM THAT IS SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTED, EFFECTIVE ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES FOR THE FUTURE TO ADDRESS ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES, LESS SOLID WASTE ON TRIBAL LANDS RESULTING IN A CLEANER COMMUNITY, LESS PLASTIC WASTE IN THE LANDFILL, IMPROVED OPPORTUNITIES FOR RECYCLING INCLUDING HAZARDOUS WASTE (USED OIL AND HOUSEHOLD WASTE), CONTINUED IMPLEMENTATION AND ENHANCEMENT OF THE TRIBE'S ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES FOR HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT, COLLECTION OF ABANDONED VEHICLES/ HAZARDOUS WASTE/ WHITE GOODS, WHICH WILL BE PROPERLY CRATED AND READY TO BE SHIPPED OUT, REDUCED CONTAMINANTS TO THE NATURAL RESOURCES THAT ARE VITAL TO SUBSISTENCE AND THE TRADITIONAL LIFESTYLE OF THE TRIBE, AND REDUCED HEALTH RISKS TO TRIBAL MEMBERS. THE BENEFICIARY IS THE HOLY CROSS TRIBE.

THESE ADAPTIVE RESPONSES ARE OFTEN ACHIEVED USING TWO-COMPONENT SIGNALING SYSTEMS. TWO- COMPONENT SIGNALING SYSTEMS ARE COMPOSED OF TWO CORE ELEMENTS: A SENSORY HISTIDINE KINASE AND RESPONSE REGULATOR. THE HISTIDINE KINASE DETECTS A CUE AND PHOSPHORYLATES THE RESPONSE REGULATOR. IN GENERAL, PHOSPHORYLATION OF RESPONSE REGULATORS LEADS TO CHANGES IN GENE EXPRESSION. ALTHOUGH CANONICAL TWO-COMPONENT SIGNALING SYSTEMS ARE SOMEWHAT SIMPLE, IT HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY APPARENT THAT MANY SYSTEMS ARE MORE COMPLEX SENSORY NETWORKS, INCORPORATING ATYPICAL FEATURES AND ADDITIONAL REGULATORY COMPONENTS. NTRY-NTRX (NTRYX) IS AN EMERGING EXAMPLE OF A COMPLEX SENSORY SYSTEM LINKED TO DIVERSE PHENOTYPES IN MANY - PROTEOBACTERIA. PRIOR STUDIES HAVE INVESTIGATED NTRYX WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF CANONICAL TWO-COMPONENT SIGNALING. HOWEVER, RECENT WORK REVEALS THAT, IN THE FRESHWATER AND SOIL BACTERIUM CAULOBACTER CRESCENTUS, THE NTRYX SYSTEM IS MORE ELABORATE, INCORPORATING AN UNIDENTIFIED SOURCE OF PHOSPHORYLATION AND A NOVEL NTRY REGULATOR, NTRZ. IN ADDITION, GENETIC AND TRANSCRIPTIONAL DATA SUGGEST THAT PHOSPHORYLATED AND UNPHOSPHORYLATED NTRX HAVE DISTINCT AND PHYSIOLOGICALLY RELEVANT ACTIVITIES. THE PROPOSED WORK WILL INVESTIGATE INTEGRATED REGULATORY STRATEGIES IN THE C. CRESCENTUS NTRYX SYSTEM AT MULTIPLE LEVELS. THE FIRST AIM OF THIS PROJECT WILL DETERMINE HOW NTRX PHOSPHORYLATION AFFECTS ITS DNA-BINDING AND REGULATORY ACTIVITIES. TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HOW THIS PHOSPHORYLATION IS CONTROLLED, THE SECOND AIM WILL APPLY BIOCHEMICAL AND STRUCTURAL APPROACHES TO PROBE THE INTERACTION BETWEEN NTRY AND THE NTRZ REGULATOR. FINALLY, THE THIRD AIM WILL EXPLORE AN ADDITIONAL PATHWAY REGULATING PHOSPHORYL-FLOW, EMPLOYING CANDIDATE-DRIVEN AND UNBIASED APPROACHES TO IDENTIFY THE IN VIVO SOURCE OF NTRX PHOSPHORYLATION. TOGETHER, THESE APPROACHES WILL ESTABLISH C. CRESCENTUS NTRYX AS A POWERFUL MODEL FOR UNDERSTANDING HOW INTERSECTING REGULATORY PATHWAYS CAN CONTROL TWO-COMPONENT SIGNALING. OUR WORK WILL ALSO SHED LIGHT ON CONSERVED AND IMPORTANT NTRYX SYSTEMS IN DIVERSE -PROTEOBACTERIA, INCLUDING PATHOGENIC AND SYMBIOTIC ORGANISMS LIKE BRUCELLA ABORTUS AND SINORHIZOBIUM MELILOTI. THERE IS MUCH MORE VARIABILITY WITHIN SPECIES THAN PEOPLE RECOGNIZE, AND IT IS THIS VARIABILITY THAT FUELS DEVELOPMENT AND CHANGE OF SPECIES IN CONTEXTS OF SURVIVAL AND REPRODUCTION. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOUNG CHILDREN UNDERSTAND THIS FOUNDATIONAL IDEA. THIS PROJECT WILL TEST AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO PROMOTING COMPARISONS RELEVANT TO UNDERSTANDING BIOLOGICAL VARIABILITY. THIS APPROACH INVOLVES MODIFYING TWO POPULAR GAMES, WAR AND UNO, BY INCORPORATING CARDS THAT DEPICT ORGANISMS AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT (E.G., INSECT EGG, LARVA, PUPA, AND ADULT). IN PLAYING THESE GAMES, PLAYERS ENGAGE IN COMPARISONS RELEVANT TO UNDERSTANDING BIODIVERSITY, SUCH AS COMPARING DIFFERENT LIFE STAGES FOR A SINGLE SPECIES, OR COMPARING SIMILAR STAGES FOR DIFFERENT SPECIES. THE RESEARCH INVESTIGATES CAREGIVER-CHILD INTERACTIONS AND COMPARISONS DURING GAME PLAY AND EXAMINES HOW GAME PLAY AFFECTS CHILDREN'S LEARNING ABOUT BIOLOGICAL VARIABILITY. THE RESEARCH INVOLVES LAB-BASED STUDIES WITH 2ND- AND 5TH-GRADE CHILDREN PLAYING LIFECYCLES (MODIFIED WAR) AND CYCLO (MODIFIED UNO) AND IS CONDUCTING PARALLEL STUDIES IN MUSEUMS, IN ORDER TO EXAMINE CAREGIVER-CHILD INTERACTION AND LEARNING IN BOTH CONTROLLED AND AUTHENTIC SETTINGS. THE TEAM WILL DESIGN AND PILOT A MUSEUM EXHIBIT PROTOTYPE THAT INCORPORATES THE GAMES AND THE LESSONS LEARNED THROUGH THE RESEARCH. THE RESULTS WILL BUILD UNDERSTANDING ABOUT HOW FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT DIVERSITY IN BIOLOGY CAN HELP YOUNG STUDENTS BE READY FOR SUBSEQUENT BIOLOGY EDUCATION. IN THE ELEMENTARY GRADES, CHILDREN ARE EXPECTED TO LEARN ABOUT BIODIVERSITY, INCLUDING WITHIN-SPECIES VARIABILITY. UNDERSTANDING BIODIVERSITY INVOLVES RELATIONAL REASONING: DISCERNING RELEVANT RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN AND AMONG BIOLOGICAL KINDS. THESE RELATIONSHIPS ARE SALIENT WHEN CHILDREN COMPARE EXAMPLES WITHIN OR BETWEEN BIOLOGICAL CATEGORIES. HOWEVER, COMPARISON IS COGNITIVELY DEMANDING, AND EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS OFTEN LACK ADEQUATE SUPPORT FOR COMPARISON. THIS PROJECT TESTS AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO PROMOTING RELATIONAL REASONING BY INCORPORATING CARDS IN MODIFIED VERSIONS OF UNO AND WAR THAT DEPICT ORGANISMS AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT (E.G., INSECT EGG, LARVA, PUPA, AND ADULT). PARALLEL STUDIES IN MUSEUMS ARE EXAMINING CAREGIVER-CHILD INTERACTION IN GAME PLAY IN AUTHENTIC SETTINGS. FINALLY, THE TEAM WILL DESIGN AND PILOT TEST A MUSEUM EXHIBIT PROTOTYPE THAT INCORPORATES THE GAMES AND THE LESSONS LEARNED THROUGH THE RESEARCH. THIS PROJECT IS SUPPORTED BY NSF'S EDU CORE RESEARCH (ECR) PROGRAM. THE ECR PROGRAM EMPHASIZES FUNDAMENTAL STEM EDUCATION RESEARCH THAT GENERATES FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD. BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS MUST UTILIZE PROCESSES TO MAINTAIN HOMEOSTASIS (A PHYSIOLOGICAL EQUILIBRIUM) IN ORDER TO CONTINUE FUNCTIONING AMIDST A FLUCTUATING ENVIRONMENT. THE ELECTRICAL ACTIVITY OF NEURONS CONTROLS ESSENTIAL BODILY FUNCTIONS AND BEHAVIORS THAT ARE NECESSARY FOR SURVIVAL. WITHIN THE NERVOUS SYSTEM, ANOTHER SET OF CELLS, CALLED GLIA, REGULATE AND SUPPORT NEURONS. RECENT WORK BY THE PI, AND OTHERS, HAS SHOWN THAT GLIAL CELLS PLAY IMPORTANT ROLES IN HELPING NEURONS MAINTAIN HOMEOSTASIS. THIS PROJECT WILL USE GENETIC TOOLS AVAILABLE IN FRUIT FLIES TO ELUCIDATE NOVEL MECHANISMS FOR HOW GLIA AND NEURONS INTERACT TO ENABLE ANIMALS TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE IN FLUCTUATING ENVIRONMENTS. THE PROJECT WILL BE INTEGRATED WITH INCLUSIVE EDUCATIONAL PRACTICES, INCLUDING EXPERIMENTS COMPLETED BY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN THE PI?S NEUROBIOLOGY LAB COURSE, AND PARTICIPATION IN A RESEARCH BASED MENTORING PROGRAM FOR FIRST YEAR UNDERGRADUATES FROM HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS IN STEM. USING DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER, THE PI?S LAB HAS RECENTLY IDENTIFIED GLIAL HOMEOSTATIC ROLES FOR TWO GENES, THE VOLTAGE-GATED POTASSIUM CHANNEL SEIZURE AND THE ION TRANSPORTER NCC69, IN NEUROPILE ENSHEATHING GLIA (EGN). EGN HAVE BEEN SHOWN BY OTHERS TO ACT AS PHAGOCYTES IN ADULT D. MELANOGASTER, THEREFORE THIS PROJECT TESTS THE HYPOTHESIS THAT GLIAL PHAGOCYTOSIS OF NEURONS, IN PROCESSES SUCH AS SYNAPTIC PRUNING, MODULATES THE ABILITY OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM TO MAINTAIN HOMEOSTASIS IN RESPONSE TO ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS. FURTHERMORE, THE PROJECT WILL TEASE APART THE IMPACT OF DEVELOPMENTAL AND ADULT GLIAL FUNCTION ON NERVOUS SYSTEM HOMEOSTASIS. ULTIMATELY, THE PROJECT TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE WEALTH OF GENETIC TOOLS, NEUROPHYSIOLOGICAL AND BEHAVIORAL ASSAYS AVAILABLE IN D. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: ANALOGY TRAINING TO PROMOTE SCIENCE LEARNING -THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP AND TEST METHODS FOR TRAINING POWERFUL THINKING SKILLS. SPECIFICALLY, THE RESEARCH WILL EXPLORE TECHNIQUES FOR IMPROVING STUDENTS' ANALOGICAL REASONING ABILITY. THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE HAS SHOWN ANALOGY TO BE A POWERFUL TOOL IN SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY. AND THERE IS ABUNDANT EVIDENCE FROM LABORATORY AND CLASSROOM STUDIES THAT ANALOGICAL COMPARISON CAN IMPROVE STUDENTS' ABILITY TO LEARN, ESPECIALLY IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE. FOR EXAMPLE, READING THAT SOUND WAVES ARE ANALOGOUS TO WATER WAVES CAN GIVE STUDENTS INSIGHT INTO HOW SOUND BEHAVES. YET NOT ALL STUDENTS BENEFIT EQUALLY FROM ANALOGICAL TEACHING. THE FIRST GOAL OF THE RESEARCH IS TO DISCOVER HOW BEST TO EQUIP STUDENTS WITH METHODS FOR ENGAGING PRODUCTIVELY WITH ANALOGICAL COMPARISONS OF ALL SORTS?IN SHORT, TO BECOME BETTER THINKERS AND LEARNERS. THE SECOND GOAL IS TO TEST WHETHER ACQUIRING THESE SKILLS WILL IMPROVE STUDENTS' ABILITY TO LEARN IN A NEW SCIENTIFIC ARENA: EVOLUTION. OVERALL, THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE NEW INSIGHTS INTO ANALOGICAL REASONING AND LEARNING AS A FUNDAMENTAL ABILITY AND INTO HOW IT CAN BE TRAINED. THE PROJECT WILL DEVELOP AN ANALOGICAL TRAINING PROGRAM FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TARGETING THREE INTERSECTING FACETS OF ANALOGICAL THINKING: (1) STRATEGIES FOR PROCESSING ANALOGICAL MAPPINGS, INCLUDING ALIGNING TWO EXAMPLES, DRAWING INFERENCES FROM ONE EXAMPLE TO ANOTHER, AND NOTING KEY DIFFERENCES; (2) METACOGNITIVE INSIGHT INTO THE NATURE AND USES OF ANALOGICAL THINKING; AND (3) ABILITY TO RECOGNIZE OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMPARISON. IN PHASE 1, ITERATIVE DESIGN AND EXPERIMENTAL METHODS WILL BE COMBINED TO DEVELOP AND TEST TRAINING COMPONENTS. IN PHASE 2, A COMPLETE TRAINING PROGRAM FOR IMPROVING ANALOGICAL REASONING AND SUPPORTING SCIENCE CONTENT LEARNING (SPECIFICALLY, ABOUT EVOLUTION) WILL BE TESTED. A GROUP THAT HAS RECEIVED ANALOGICAL TRAINING WILL BE COMPARED WITH A CONTROL GROUP ON THEIR ABILITY TO LEARN FROM ANALOGICAL COMPARISONS IN EVOLUTION AND IN OTHER TOPICS, USING A PRE-POST DESIGN. THEY WILL BE ASSESSED IN BOTH SHORT-TERM (IMMEDIATELY AFTER INSTRUCTION) AND LONG-TERM (6-7 WEEKS LATER) LEARNING. A PILOT STUDY WILL EXPLORE ADAPTING THE ANALOGICAL TRAINING PROGRAM FOR EIGHTH GRADERS IN A CLASSROOM SETTING. THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY THE EHR CORE RESEARCH (ECR) PROGRAM, WHICH SUPPORTS FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH ON STEM LEARNING AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS, BROADENING PARTICIPATION IN STEM, AND STEM WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT. AUTOMATED FEEDBACK IN UNDERGRADUATE COMPUTING THEORY COURSES: A MULTI-INSTITUTIONAL STUDY -THIS PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY IMPROVING CURRICULA IN COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION. COMPUTING PROFESSIONALS NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE POSSIBILITIES AND LIMITATIONS OF COMPUTATION IN ORDER TO DESIGN EFFICIENT ALGORITHMS FOR PROBLEMS THAT CAN BE SOLVED IN PRACTICE, OR TO AVOID LARGE INVESTMENTS IN ATTEMPTS TO IMPLEMENT SOLUTIONS FOR PROBLEMS WHICH HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO REQUIRE UNREASONABLE AMOUNTS OF TIME OR OTHER RESOURCES. MODELING COMPUTATION IS AN IMPORTANT BUILDING BLOCK FOR THIS UNDERSTANDING, HOWEVER, STUDENTS OFTEN STRUGGLE WITH ABSTRACT MODELING AND VISUALIZATION. A PRIOR LEVEL 1 ENGAGED STUDENT LEARNING PROJECT RESULTED IN A PROTOTYPE TOOL WHICH PROVIDES IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK ON THE COMPUTATIONAL MODELS DESIGNED BY STUDENTS. THIS LEVEL 2 ENGAGED STUDENT LEARNING PROJECT AIMS TO ADD FEATURES TO THE TOOL, IMPROVE ITS USABILITY AND ADAPTABILITY, AND INVESTIGATE ITS IMPACT ON STUDENT PROBLEM-SOLVING AT A LARGER SCALE, IN DIFFERENT EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS. THE EXISTING AUTOMATED FEEDBACK FOR COMPUTING THEORY (AFCT) PROTOTYPE TOOL WAS BUILT ON THE WIDELY USED JAVA FORMAL LANGUAGES AND AUTOMATA PACKAGE (JFLAP) VISUALIZATION TOOL THAT AIDS STUDENTS IN LEARNING THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF FORMAL LANGUAGES AND AUTOMATA THEORY. THE ENHANCED TOOL DEVELOPED IN THIS PROJECT WILL INITIALLY BE DEPLOYED AND OUTCOMES ASSESSED IN THEORETICAL COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSES AT THE FIVE COLLABORATING INSTITUTIONS. IT WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE UNDER AN OPENSOURCE LICENSE TO ENABLE OTHERS TO USE AND MODIFY THE SOFTWARE TO SUIT THEIR NEEDS. THE RESEARCH QUESTIONS ARE FOCUSED ON UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACTS OF THE TOOL ON STUDENTS' BEHAVIOR, PERFORMANCE, AND LEARNING OF COMPUTING THEORY; WHETHER STUDENTS FROM DIFFERENT TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS ARE IMPACTED IN SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT WAYS; AND THE EFFECTS OF VARIOUS TYPES OF FEEDBACK ON STUDENTS' LEARNING. THE TOOL'S ADDED FUNCTIONALITY, IMPROVED USABILITY, AND AVAILABILITY AS OPENSOURCE SOFTWARE WILL ENCOURAGE ITS ADOPTION AT OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INCREASE ITS EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS. THE PROJECT, INCLUDING THE UPGRADED FEEDBACK TOOL AND THE ASSOCIATED RESEARCH STUDY, WILL PROVIDE NEW INSIGHTS INTO PEDAGOGICAL APPROACHES FOR IMPROVING STUDENT LEARNING AND WILL HELP STUDENTS TO BE BETTER PREPARED TO DEVELOP HIGH-QUALITY SOFTWARE. E014042 SCIENTIFIC GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: JUPITER'S MOON EUROPA IS THOUGHT TO POSSESS A SUBSURFACE OCEAN BENEATH AN ICE SHELL THAT IS LIKELY BETWEEN 5 AND 30 KILOMETERS THICK YET NUMEROUS OBSERVATIONS SUGGEST THAT POCKETS OF MELT MAY BE PRESENT ONLY 1 TO 2 KM BENEATH THE SURFACE. CHAOS TERRAIN AND DOUBLE RIDGES MAY BOTH FORM IN RESPONSE TO NEAR-SURFACE WATER BODIES THAT DEFORM THE SURFACE. NEAR-SURFACE MELT COULD BE SOURCED DIRECTLY FROM THE SUBSURFACE OCEAN OR COULD BE GENERATED LOCALLY BY TIDAL HEATING OR SHEAR-HEATING BENEATH TIDALLY-DRIVEN STRIKE-SLIP FAULTS. IN ADDITION TO PLAYING A PROFOUND ROLE IN THE GEOLOGIC EVOLUTION OF EUROPA NEAR-SURFACE MELT BODIES COULD BE POTENTIALLY HABITABLE ENVIRONMENTS AND THE MIGRATION OF NEAR-SURFACE MELT COULD ALLOW FOR CHEMICAL EXCHANGE BETWEEN THE SURFACE AND SUBSURFACE OCEAN. WHILE MANY GEOLOGIC OBSERVATIONS STRONGLY SUGGEST THE PRESENCE OF NEAR-SURFACE MELT PHYSICAL MODELS FOR HOW NEAR-SURFACE MELTS ARE GENERATED FACE MANY CHALLENGES. MELTS WOULD BE THERMALLY AND GRAVITATIONALLY UNSTABLE AND COULD QUICKLY FREEZE OR MIGRATE DOWN TOWARD THE OCEAN. A MORE ROBUST PHYSICAL MODEL IS REQUIRED TO DEEPEN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF NEAR-SURFACE MELT BODIES ONE THAT SELF-CONSISTENTLY TREATS TIDAL DEFORMATION EUTECTIC MELTING MELT-MIGRATION AND ICE SHELL CONVECTION. UNDERSTANDING THE DYNAMICS OF NEAR-SURFACE MELT FEATURES INCLUDING THEIR SIZE DISTRIBUTION LONGEVITY AVERAGE MELT FRACTION AND SALINITY IS ESSENTIAL FOR BUILDING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF EUROPA S EVOLUTION AND TO INTERPRETING DATA COLLECTED AT EUROPA BY FUTURE SPACECRAFT. IN ORDER TO ADDRESS OUTSTANDING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FORMATION AND EVOLUTION OF NEAR-SURFACE MELTS WE WILL: 1) INVESTIGATE FEEDBACKS BETWEEN TIDAL HEATING FAULT SLIDING AND MELT GENERATION ALONG STRIKE-SLIP FAULTS 2) ESTIMATE THE RATE OF DOWNWARD MIGRATION BY POROUS FLOW AND HYDROFRACTURE 3) INVESTIGATE THE EVOLUTION OF PERCHED BODIES OF WATER AND ASSOCIATED ICE BLISTERS ON ANTARCTIC ICE SHELVES CALLED DOLINES TO PLACE CONSTRAINTS ON THE DYNAMICS OF PERCHED MELTS ON EUROPA. METHODOLOGY: WE WILL DEVELOP A NUMERICAL MODEL TO EXPLORE THE COUPLED PROCESSES OF TIDAL/SHEAR HEATING MELT GENERATION MELT MIGRATION AND MELT-FRACTURE INTERACTION IN EUROPA S ICE SHELL. WE WILL BUILD ON OUR EXISTING TWO-DIMENSIONAL FINITE ELEMENT CODES IN MATLAB AND COMSOL. OUR TREATMENT OF MELT MIGRATION WILL BE INFORMED BY STUDIES OF THE EVOLUTION OF SEA-ICE MELT MIGRATION IN TERRESTRIAL MAGMA CHAMBERS AND THE DRAINAGE OF SUPRA-GLACIAL LAKES THROUGH CREVASSES. USING OUR NUMERICAL MODEL WE WILL MAKE QUANTIFIED PREDICTIONS ON THE LONGEVITY SPATIAL EXTENT MELT FRACTION AND SALINITY IN POSSIBLE NEAR-SURFACE MELT BODIES ON EUROPA. WE WILL PLACE CONSTRAINTS ON THE HEATING RATES SLIDING RATES AND PERMEABILITIES REQUIRED TO GENERATE AND MAINTAIN NEAR SURFACE MELTS. BY TRACKING THE MOVEMENT OF SALTS THROUGH THE ICE SHELL WE WILL ALSO BUILD AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THE CHEMICAL EVOLUTION OF THE ICE SHELL COUPLES WITH GEOLOGIC ACTIVITY. RELEVANCE OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH: THE PROPOSED WORK WILL FURTHER OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE MYRIAD OF GEOLOGICAL PROCESSES AFFECTING THE SOLAR SYSTEM BY PLACING CONSTRAINTS ON HOW NEAR-SURFACE MELT FEATURES ON EUROPA LIKELY FORM AND EVOLVE. OUR STUDY WILL SHED LIGHT ON HOW GEOLOGIC PROCESSES ON EUROPA MAY DIFFER FROM OTHER ICY BODIES SUCH AS ENCELADUS. OUR PREDICTIONS WILL ALSO BE EXTREMELY RELEVANT TO THE UPCOMING EUROPA CLIPPER MISSION AS CONSTRAINTS ON THE SIZE AND MELT FRACTION OF NEAR-SURFACE MELT BODIES IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT FOR THE RADAR INSTRUMENT.

ONE OF THE REASONS FOR THIS LIMITED ACCESSIBILITY IS THE LACK OF EXPOSURE TO FORMAL METHODS IN UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION, EVEN FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE MAJORS. EVEN THOUGH FORMAL METHODS ARE USED IN PRACTICE TO ANALYZE THE CORRECTNESS OF LARGE-SCALE SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE SYSTEMS, THEY CAN ALSO BE APPLIED TO ALGORITHMS AND OTHER MATHEMATICAL CONSTRUCTS AT A SMALLER SCALE. THE PROJECT'S NOVELTIES ARE DEVELOPING AND DISSEMINATING SELF-CONTAINED INTERACTIVE EXERCISES, USING A WEB-BASED PROGRAMMING ENVIRONMENT, TO SOLVE SMALL-SCALE PROBLEMS USING FORMAL METHODS. THE PROJECT'S IMPACTS GO BEYOND THE INVESTIGATORS' INSTITUTIONS: THE SELF-CONTAINED INTERACTIVE EXERCISES CAN BE USED AS-IS, WITH NO WORK REQUIRED FROM THE INSTRUCTOR AND NO ADDITIONAL TIME NEEDED IN THE COURSE SCHEDULE SINCE THEY ARE DESIGNED TO COVER STANDARD COURSE TOPICS, TO GIVE A TASTE OF FORMAL METHODS TO ALL. FORMAL METHODS ARE CURRENTLY NOT PART OF THE STANDARD COMPUTER SCIENCE UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM. THUS INSTRUCTION USING FORMAL METHODS, ESPECIALLY OUTSIDE OF COMPUTER SCIENCE PROGRAMS AND OUTSIDE OF RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS, IS VERY LIMITED. INSTRUCTORS MAY LACK THE PROPER EXPERIENCE OR BACKGROUND TO TEACH FORMAL METHODS. INSTRUCTORS MAY NOT HAVE HAD THE APPROPRIATE EXPOSURE, AND FOR STEM INSTRUCTORS OUTSIDE COMPUTER SCIENCE (E.G., MECHANICAL ENGINEERING), FORMAL METHODS MAY BE FAR AWAY FROM THEIR FIELDS. ADDITIONALLY, THERE IS A LACK OF SPACE IN THE OFTEN TIGHTLY STRUCTURED UNDERGRADUATE COMPUTING AND ENGINEERING CURRICULA. THE PROJECT'S WORKING HYPOTHESIS IS THAT FORMAL METHODS EXPOSURE CAN BE SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED BY DEVELOPING SELF-CONTAINED JUPYTER NOTEBOOKS (USING SATISFIABILITY MODULO THEORIES SOLVERS ACCESSED VIA PYTHON) THAT FOCUS ON SMALL-SCALE PROBLEMS. THESE NOTEBOOKS CAN BE USED AS-IS, WITH NO WORK REQUIRED FROM THE INSTRUCTOR AND NO ADDITIONAL TIME NEEDED IN THE COURSE SCHEDULE SINCE THEY ARE DESIGNED TO COVER STANDARD COURSE TOPICS. FOR INSTANCE, MODULES STUDYING THE VERIFICATION OF THE MOLECULAR STRUCTURE OF A CHEMICAL COMPOUND, THE LINKS IN A PROTEIN-PROTEIN INTERACTION BIOLOGICAL NETWORK, OR THE TUPLES RETRIEVED BY A SQL QUERY OVER A RELATIONAL DATABASE. THE PROJECT AIMS TO IMPACT A WIDE RANGE OF STUDENTS AND MAJORS. THIS INCLUDES COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS AT THE ROCHESTER INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (RIT, A RESEARCH INSTITUTION) AND THE COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS (A LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGE), AS WELL AS AT MONROE COMMUNITY COLLEGE, WHICH HAS A FORMAL TRANSFER PATHWAY WITH RIT. IN ADDITION TO INTRODUCING FORMAL METHODS TO COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS, THE PROJECT WILL ALSO INTRODUCE FORMAL METHODS TO SEVERAL ENGINEERING PROGRAMS. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE NOT PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.

OVER TIME, OVC HAS CONDUCTED A NUMBER OF TRIBAL CONSULTATIONS AND LISTENING SESSIONS TO GATHER INPUT FROM OUR AI/AN PARTNERS REGARDING THE CRIME VICTIMS FUND TRIBAL VICTIM SERVICES SET-ASIDE. BASED ON THE INFORMATION GATHERED, OVC WILL ALLOCATE THE FY 2020 FUNDING BY AN INTERIM DISCRETIONARY ADMINISTRATIVE FORMULA. THE FORMULA BEING USED WAS CREATED WITH SIGNIFICANT INPUT FROM TRIBAL LEADERS AND FROM THE INFORMATION GATHERED FROM THE CONSULTATIONS AND LISTENING SESSIONS.
