THE RECIPIENT AND PARTNERS WILL PLAN, COORDINATE, AND OVERSEE ACTIVITIES SUCH AS DIRECT FARMER MENTORING, FIELD DAYS, AND EDUCATIONAL EVENTS. THE GOAL OF THE AWARD IS TO HELP AGRICULTURE PRODUCERS OVERCOME BARRIERS TO ORGANIC PRODUCTION AND CERTIFICATION, INCLUDING DURING THE THREE-YEAR TRANSITION PERIOD PRIOR TO ORGANIC CERTIFICATION. RECIPIENTS WILL TRACK PROGRAM PROGRESS THROUGH DATA COLLECTION AND WILL SUBMIT QUARTERLY REPORTS. THIS PROGRAM WILL BENEFIT AGRICULTURE PRODUCERS THROUGH PROGRAM ACTIVITIES AND BY CREATING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE MATERIALS (FACTSHEETS, WEBINARS) THAT WILL BE MADE PUBLICLY AVAILABLE THROUGH USDA AND OTHER CHANNELS. THE AWARD WILL RESULT IN SUBAWARDS TO ORGANIC FARMING ORGANIZATIONS, EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, AND OTHERS WHO WORK WITH FARMING COMMUNITIES. NCGA'S MEMBERSHIP REPRESENTS A WIDE RANGE OF DIVERSE FARMING FAMILIES RANGING FROM BRAND NEW, YOUNGER FARMERS TO 6TH GENERATION, MULTI-GENERATIONAL WORKING HISTORIC FARMS. THE REPORT HAS INFORMED THE PROGRAMMING AND CURRICULUM INCLUDED IN THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT.IN 2021 A COMPREHENSIVE REPORT, ASSESSING REGIONAL AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION CAPACITY(3) CONDUCTED BY STUDENTS AT HUMBOLDT POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY, FOUND THAT 78% OF SURVEYED HUMBOLDT COUNTY FARMERS AND RANCHERS WOULD INCREASE WHOLESALE PRODUCTION IF THEY WERE GIVEN ASSISTANCE IN PRODUCTION PLANNING AND NEW MARKET OPPORTUNITIES, AND 50% INDICATED THEY HAVE EXTRA ARABLE LAND THAT THEY WOULD USE TO INCREASE THEIR PRODUCTION, GIVEN AN INCREASED MARKET FOR THEIR PRODUCTS. OF THOSE INTERESTED IN EXPANDING PRODUCTION, ONE-THIRD INDICATED A NEED FOR ADDITIONAL TRAINING TO HELP WITH THIS GROWTH, SUCH AS PRODUCTION PLANNING, PEST MANAGEMENT, FOOD SAFETY, AND SEASON EXTENSION. THIS WAS PRIOR TO NCGA OPENING THE LOCAL FOOD HUB, WHICH HAS OPENED CRITICAL NEW MARKETS FOR REGIONAL PRODUCERS. OVER THE PAST 5 YEARS, WITH SUPPORT FROM THE BFRDP, THE FARM PATHWAYS TEAM HAS PROVIDED TRAINING AND SUPPORT TO OVER 2000 BEGINNING FARMERS OF WHICH 45% ARE WOMEN, 30% ARE LIMITED RESOURCE, 4% ARE DISADVANTAGED POPULATIONS, AND 2% ARE VETERANS. WE ALSO KNOW THAT THE MAJORITY OF BEGINNING FARMERS IN OUR REGION ARE UNDERFUNDED, COME FROM NON-FARMING BACKGROUNDS, AND STRUGGLE TO FIND LONG TERM LAND TENURE. IN 2019, OGS CONDUCTED A COMPREHENSIVE SURVEY OF LOCAL FARMERS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE BARRIERS TO SUCCESSFUL FARMING IN NC. THE TOP FIVE CONCERNS FOR FARMERS REGARDING THEIR FARM VIABILITY THAT EMERGED FROM THIS PROJECT INCLUDED PROFITABILITY, CLIMATE CHANGE, LABOR, CHANGING REGULATIONS, AND ACCESS TO MARKETS.ALTHOUGH WE'VE BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN OUR EFFORTS TO DATE, WE KNOW FROM PROGRAMMATIC FEEDBACK AND STATISTICAL DATA THAT WE CAN AMPLIFY THAT SUCCESS BY PAYING CLOSER ATTENTION TO BEGINNING FARMERS IN YEARS 3-10 OF THEIR FARMING CAREERS, SPECIFICALLY HELPING TO OVERCOME THE STRUGGLES NEW FARMERS FACE SECURING LONG TERM, AFFORDABLE LAND ACCESS AND PROFITABILITY. FLORIDA ORGANIC GROWERS AND CONSUMERS INC. (FOG) STARTED THE FLORIDA FARMERS MARKET ASSOCIATION (FFMA) TO BRING TOGETHER FARMERS MARKET MANAGERS, VENDORS, CONSUMERS, AND ORGANIZATIONS TO FIND SOLUTIONS TO THESE PROBLEMS. THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC PROVIDED MORE EVIDENCE OF THE URGENT NEED TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT SYSTEMS THAT PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR FARMERS AND CONSUMERS TO WORK TOGETHER TO HELP MAKE OUR CURRENT FOOD DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM MORE EFFICIENT AND EQUITABLE. OUR PROJECT USES A VIRTUAL FARMERS MARKET PLATFORM TO EMPOWER PRODUCERS AND CONSUMERS AND PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES TO BUILD STRONG, DYNAMIC, AND INTERACTIVE EXCHANGES THAT ENABLES THEM TO SELL AND PURCHASE FOOD WITH FLEXIBILITY AND EFFICIENCY. WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT OUR PROJECT ADDRESSES FUTURE PROBLEMS THAT CITIZENS MAY FACE DURING ADVERSE CIRCUMSTANCES LIKE PANDEMICS OR EXISTING ONES SUCH AS RESIDING IN FOOD DESERTS OR PERSONAL SCHEDULES TO TRAVEL AND VISIT PHYSICAL FARMERS MARKETS WHEN IT IS NOT FEASIBLE. A FREQUENT FEEDBACK FARMERS PROVIDE AT THESE WORKSHOPS IS THAT DUE TO THEIR GROWING SEASONS AND WORK SCHEDULES, THEY WOULD PREFER TO ACQUIRE FOOD SAFETY INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE IN SUCH A WAY THAT THEY CAN LEARN ABOUT NEW AND RELEVANT TOPICS IN THEIR LEISURE TIME AND AT THEIR OWN PACE. WE PROPOSE TO APPLY THE LESSONS LEARN FROM THIS AND OTHER FSMA-RELATED EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING MATERIALS BY DESIGNING SPECIFIC CONTENT THAT WILL BE MUCH MORE ACCESSIBLE TO NEW AND BEGINNING FARMERS, EXPERIENCED FARMERS WHO LIVE FAR AWAY FROM WORKSHOP SITES, AND SPANISH-SPEAKING GROWERS. ALL OF THESE GROUPS OFTEN HAVE DIFFICULTIES OR CHALLENGES TO TRAVEL AWAY FROM THEIR FARMS. THUS, WE BELIEVE THAT OUR PROJECT CAN PROVIDE A FORMAT TO EXPAND FOOD SAFETY INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE TO A BROADER COMMUNITY OF FARMERS. FOG IS CONFIDENT THAT BY CREATING PODCASTS AND WEBINARS THAT PRESENT THOSE FOOD SAFETY TOPICS FARMERS ARE MOST INTERESTED IN, WE CAN DELIVER SAID INFORMATION IN A POINTED AND EFFECTIVE MANNER TO FARMERS AT ALL TIMES, REGARDLESS OF THE SEASON, WEATHER OR SCHEDULES PODCAST ENGAGEMENT HAS GROWN EXPONENTIALLY IN RECENT YEARS. EDUCATION EXPERTS BELIEVE USING PODCASTS TO DELIVER NEW INFORMATION HAS SEVERAL ADVANTAGES. ONE OF ADVANTAGE IS THAT UNLIKE FORMAL WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES, PODCASTS ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE AT ANY TIME. THEY ALSO ALLOW EDUCATORS TO REACH MORE PEOPLE THAN THEY COULD UNDER NORMAL CLASSROOM SETTINGS. FOG BELIEVES THAT PODCASTS AND WEBINARS WILL PROVE TO BE AN EFFICIENT AND COST-EFFECTIVE WAY OF DELIVERY INFORMATION REGARDING FOOD SAFETY TOPICS TO AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS WHO HAVE TIME CONSTRAINTS AND ARE GEOGRAPHICALLY DISPERSED. OUR ROAD TO SAFE AND HEALTHY FOOD PODCAST PROJECT WILL INNOVATE HOW WE DELIVER USEFUL INFORMATION TO FARMERS IS KEY TO POSITIVELY INFLUENCING THEIR DECISIONS TO LISTEN AND BE RECEPTIVE TO CRITICAL INFORMATION THAT IS SHARED WITH THEM. THEY CURRENTLY PROCESS APPROXIMATELY FOUR HEAD OF CATTLE AND TEN SHEEP/GOATS PER WEEK, BUT ARE MISSING SOME EQUIPMENT NECESSARY TO SLAUGHTER HOGS. THEY'RE APPLYING FOR MPIR FUNDS TO MAKE EQUIPMENT AND FACILITY UPGRADES AND TO DEVELOP HAZARD ANALYSIS CRITICAL CONTROL POINT (HACCP) PLANS AND SANITATION STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES (SSOPS) NECESSARY TO OBTAIN A FEDERAL GRANT OF INSPECTION SO THAT THEY CAN (1) PROCESS ANIMALS UNDER INSPECTION TO SELL MEAT ACROSS INDIANA AND ACROSS STATE LINES, (2) PROCESS ANIMALS FOR OTHERS IN NEED OF INSPECTED PROCESSING TO SERVE THEIR CUSTOMER BASES, AND (3) PROCESS THE ANIMALS OF OTHER LOCAL PRODUCERS TO BE SOLD TO THE PUBLIC AT FARMER'S MARKETS, FARM- BASED MARKETS, AND TO WHOLESALE CUSTOMERS. WITH THE PROPOSED INVESTMENTS, THEIR CURRENT 9,400 SQUARE- FOOT FACILITY COULD REACH A CAPACITY, BASED ON AVAILABLE HANGING SPACE, OF 25 HEAD OF CATTLE OR 40 HEAD OF HOGS OR 60 HEAD OF SHEEP/GOATS PER WEEK. AN MPIR GRANT WOULD NOT ONLY HELP PAY FOR THE EQUIPMENT, SANITATION PLANS, AND FACILITY UPGRADES NECESSARY TO OBTAIN A FEDERAL GRANT OF INSPECTION FOR THE APPLICANT, BUT IT WOULD STRENGTHEN THE INDIANA FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN AND INCREASE THE SUPPLY OF LOCALLY PRODUCED MEAT PRODUCTS ACROSS THE STATE AND REGION. THE PURPOSE OF THIS AGREEMENT IS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT TO TRANSITIONING AND ORGANIC AGRICULTURE PRODUCERS IN THE U.S. SOUTHEAST (NORTH CAROLINA, SOUTH CAROLINA, GEORGIA, FLORIDA, ALABAMA, MISSISSIPPI, LOUISIANA, PUERTO RICO, VIRGIN ISLANDS). THE AGREEMENT PROVIDES FOR FARMER-TO-FARMER MENTORING, COMMUNITY BUILDING, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, AND DATA AND REPORTING. THE RECIPIENT AND PARTNERS WILL PLAN, COORDINATE, AND OVERSEE ACTIVITIES SUCH AS DIRECT FARMER MENTORING, FIELD DAYS, AND EDUCATIONAL EVENTS. THE GOAL OF THE AWARD IS TO HELP AGRICULTURE PRODUCERS OVERCOME BARRIERS TO ORGANIC PRODUCTION AND CERTIFICATION, INCLUDING DURING THE THREE-YEAR TRANSITION PERIOD PRIOR TO ORGANIC CERTIFICATION. RECIPIENTS WILL TRACK PROGRAM PROGRESS THROUGH DATA COLLECTION AND WILL SUBMIT QUARTERLY REPORTS. THIS PROGRAM WILL BENEFIT AGRICULTURE PRODUCERS THROUGH PROGRAM ACTIVITIES AND BY CREATING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE MATERIALS (FACTSHEETS, WEBINARS) THAT WILL BE MADE PUBLICLY AVAILABLE THROUGH USDA AND OTHER CHANNELS. THE AWARD WILL RESULT IN SUBAWARDS TO ORGANIC FARMING ORGANIZATIONS, EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, AND OTHERS WHO WORK WITH FARMING COMMUNITIES. THE 2010 COMMUNITY FOOD ASSESSMENT, COMPLETED BY CALIFORNIA CENTER FOR RURAL POLICY AT HUMBOLDT STATE UNIVERSITY/HUMBOLDT POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY PROVIDES A NEEDS ASSESSMENT WHICH HAS INFORMED NCGA AND PARTNERS' APPROACH TO SUPPORTING AND EXPANDING THE LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM AND AGRICULTURAL ECONOMY INCLUDING: MORE FOOD ACCESS POINTS, AND IMPROVED TRANSPORTATION TO THEM; FRESH HEALTHY FOODS ARE NOT CONSISTENTLY AVAILABLE IN GEOGRAPHICALLY ISOLATED COMMUNITIES AND AFFORDABLE HEALTHY FOODS ARE NEEDED ALL OVER; PURCHASING POLICIES MAKE IT HARD FOR FARMERS TO SELL TO INSTITUTIONS; AGRICULTURAL LEADERS NEED MORE SUPPORT AND RESEARCH. A 2023 NCGA FARM SERVICES SURVEY(2) FOUND THAT 58% HAVE NEVER WORKED WITH NRCS OR RCD PROGRAMS, AND 89% REPORT THEY NEED ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, ADVISING AND ACCESS TO GRANT FUNDS AND COST-SHARE PROGRAMS. NCGA'S MEMBERSHIP REPRESENTS A WIDE RANGE OF DIVERSE FARMING FAMILIES RANGING FROM BRAND NEW, YOUNGER FARMERS TO 6TH GENERATION, MULTI-GENERATIONAL WORKING HISTORIC FARMS. THE REPORT HAS INFORMED THE PROGRAMMING AND CURRICULUM INCLUDED IN THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT.IN 2021 A COMPREHENSIVE REPORT, ASSESSING REGIONAL AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION CAPACITY(3) CONDUCTED BY STUDENTS AT HUMBOLDT POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY, FOUND THAT 78% OF SURVEYED HUMBOLDT COUNTY FARMERS AND RANCHERS WOULD INCREASE WHOLESALE PRODUCTION IF THEY WERE GIVEN ASSISTANCE IN PRODUCTION PLANNING AND NEW MARKET OPPORTUNITIES, AND 50% INDICATED THEY HAVE EXTRA ARABLE LAND THAT THEY WOULD USE TO INCREASE THEIR PRODUCTION, GIVEN AN INCREASED MARKET FOR THEIR PRODUCTS. OF THOSE INTERESTED IN EXPANDING PRODUCTION, ONE-THIRD INDICATED A NEED FOR ADDITIONAL TRAINING TO HELP WITH THIS GROWTH, SUCH AS PRODUCTION PLANNING, PEST MANAGEMENT, FOOD SAFETY, AND SEASON EXTENSION. THIS WAS PRIOR TO NCGA OPENING THE LOCAL FOOD HUB, WHICH HAS OPENED CRITICAL NEW MARKETS FOR REGIONAL PRODUCERS. THE NEED FOR WHOLESALE PRODUCTION PLANNING, FOOD SAFETY PLAN CREATION, AND BUSINESS SKILL DEVELOPMENT WILL BE MET THROUGH THIS PROJECT.THIS PROJECT TEAM WILL CREATE A NEW AND SIGNIFICANTLY EXPANDED PROGRAM WITH THE SAME NAME AS THE SUCCESSFUL CLIMATE RESILIENT FARMER TRAINING PROGRAM DEVELOPED AND IMPLEMENTED IN 2022-2024 WITH FUNDING FROM CDFA'S BEGINNING FARMER AND FARMWORKER TRAINING PROGRAM. THIS PROJECT IS IN NO WAY A DUPLICATION OF THAT PROGRAM, WHICH WAS A 2-DAY WORKSHOP. THE PARTNERS RECEIVED A BFRDP DEVELOPMENT GRANT IN 2015, AND A STANDARD GRANT IN 2016 TO LAUNCH AND LAY THE FOUNDATION FOR THIS INNOVATIVE COLLABORATION.COLLECTIVELY WE WILL PROVIDE THESE ADDITIONAL SERVICES FOR BEGINNING FARMERS TO EXPAND OUR AUDIENCE AND PARTNERSHIP: 1) BUILD RESILIENT FARM BUSINESSES WITH TARGETED TRAINING, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, AND MENTORING FOR BEGINNING FARMERS. 2) PRIORITIZE LAND ACCESS AND FARM TRANSITION, AND SUPPORT STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESSFUL BEGINNING FARMER LAND TENURE. 3) EXPAND, ENHANCE, UPDATE, AND DELIVER FARM PATHWAYS BEGINNING FARMER PROGRAMS TO A WIDER AUDIENCE; INCLUDING MORE RURAL FARMERS, VETERANS, LIMITED RESOURCE AND SOCIALLY DISADVANTAGED FARMERS. 4) FACILITATE FARM PATHWAYS PROGRAM REPLICATION TO OTHER AREAS OF THE COUNTRY BY DESIGNING, STREAMLINING, ADMINISTERING, AND DISTRIBUTING COLLECTIVE EVALUATIONS AND MEASURABLE REPORTS.WHILE THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 HAS BEEN DEVASTATING FOR OUR COMMUNITIES IN UNCOUNTABLE WAYS, IT HAS NOT REVEALED ANYTHING NEW ABOUT THE PROBLEMS BEGINNING FARMERS FACE. RATHER, IT HAS SERVED TO EXACERBATE AND AMPLIFY THESE PRE-EXISTING PROBLEMS AND SHINED A LIGHT ON THE CRACKS IN OUR FOOD SYSTEM THAT MAKE IT INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT FOR NEW AND BEGINNING FARMERS TO SUCCEED, IN PARTICULAR VETERANS, LIMITED RESOURCE, AND SOCIALLY DISADVANTAGED FARMERS.?MANY OF THE BEGINNING FARMERS IN THE WNC REGION NEED SUPPORT GETTING STARTED, INCREASING ADAPTABILITY, AND STAYING VIABLE. OVER THE PAST 5 YEARS, WITH SUPPORT FROM THE BFRDP, THE FARM PATHWAYS TEAM HAS PROVIDED TRAINING AND SUPPORT TO OVER 2000 BEGINNING FARMERS OF WHICH 45% ARE WOMEN, 30% ARE LIMITED RESOURCE, 4% ARE DISADVANTAGED POPULATIONS, AND 2% ARE VETERANS. WE ALSO KNOW THAT THE MAJORITY OF BEGINNING FARMERS IN OUR REGION ARE UNDERFUNDED, COME FROM NON-FARMING BACKGROUNDS, AND STRUGGLE TO FIND LONG TERM LAND TENURE. IN 2019, OGS CONDUCTED A COMPREHENSIVE SURVEY OF LOCAL FARMERS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE BARRIERS TO SUCCESSFUL FARMING IN NC. THE TOP FIVE CONCERNS FOR FARMERS REGARDING THEIR FARM VIABILITY THAT EMERGED FROM THIS PROJECT INCLUDED PROFITABILITY, CLIMATE CHANGE, LABOR, CHANGING REGULATIONS, AND ACCESS TO MARKETS.ALTHOUGH WE'VE BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN OUR EFFORTS TO DATE, WE KNOW FROM PROGRAMMATIC FEEDBACK AND STATISTICAL DATA THAT WE CAN AMPLIFY THAT SUCCESS BY PAYING CLOSER ATTENTION TO BEGINNING FARMERS IN YEARS 3-10 OF THEIR FARMING CAREERS, SPECIFICALLY HELPING TO OVERCOME THE STRUGGLES NEW FARMERS FACE SECURING LONG TERM, AFFORDABLE LAND ACCESS AND PROFITABILITY. WE ALSO KNOWWE NEED TO INCREASE ACCESS TO BEGINNING FARMER TRAINING AND SUPPORT FOR MORE RURAL AND DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES IN OUR REGION, AND POPULATIONS SUCH AS WOMEN, VETERANS, LIMITED RESOURCE FARMERS, AND BLACK, INDIGENOUS, AND PEOPLE OF COLOR (BIPOC) FARMERS.THIS ONGOING STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP PROVIDES MUCH NEEDED, HIGH VALUE RESOURCES FOR BEGINNING FARMERS TO CREATE, RUN, AND MAINTAIN SUCCESSFUL, RESILIENT FARM ENTERPRISES THROUGHOUT WNC. THESE ISSUES EXTEND BEYOND THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR, IMPACTING OUR ECONOMY AND SOCIETY AT LARGE. WHEN SMALL FARMS FLOURISH, THEY CONTRIBUTE TO LOCAL ECONOMIES, CREATE JOB OPPORTUNITIES, AND HELP DIVERSIFY THE AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPE. FOOD SAFETY EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, TOOLS AND LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES DEVELOPED TO EDUCATE FARMERS ABOUT THE FOOD SAFETY MODERNIZATION ACT (FSMA) REGULATIONS MAY NOT ALWAYS BE READILY ACCESSIBLE TO ALL FARMERS. SOME OF THE FORMAL TRAININGS THAT HAVE BEEN USED TO PROVIDE INFORMATION TO FARMERS ABOUT THESE FOOD SAFETY REGULATIONS ARE DESIGNED TO BE DELIVERED AS WORKSHOPS OR SHORTCOURSES THAT REQUIRED FARMERS TO ATTEND AT SPECIFIC TIMES AND LOCATIONS DURING THE YEAR. A FREQUENT FEEDBACK FARMERS PROVIDE AT THESE WORKSHOPS IS THAT DUE TO THEIR GROWING SEASONS AND WORK SCHEDULES, THEY WOULD PREFER TO ACQUIRE FOOD SAFETY INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE IN SUCH A WAY THAT THEY CAN LEARN ABOUT NEW AND RELEVANT TOPICS IN THEIR LEISURE TIME AND AT THEIR OWN PACE. WE PROPOSE TO APPLY THE LESSONS LEARN FROM THIS AND OTHER FSMA-RELATED EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING MATERIALS BY DESIGNING SPECIFIC CONTENT THAT WILL BE MUCH MORE ACCESSIBLE TO NEW AND BEGINNING FARMERS, EXPERIENCED FARMERS WHO LIVE FAR AWAY FROM WORKSHOP SITES, AND SPANISH-SPEAKING GROWERS. ALL OF THESE GROUPS OFTEN HAVE DIFFICULTIES OR CHALLENGES TO TRAVEL AWAY FROM THEIR FARMS. THUS, WE BELIEVE THAT OUR PROJECT CAN PROVIDE A FORMAT TO EXPAND FOOD SAFETY INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE TO A BROADER COMMUNITY OF FARMERS. FOG IS CONFIDENT THAT BY CREATING PODCASTS AND WEBINARS THAT PRESENT THOSE FOOD SAFETY TOPICS FARMERS ARE MOST INTERESTED IN, WE CAN DELIVER SAID INFORMATION IN A POINTED AND EFFECTIVE MANNER TO FARMERS AT ALL TIMES, REGARDLESS OF THE SEASON, WEATHER OR SCHEDULES PODCAST ENGAGEMENT HAS GROWN EXPONENTIALLY IN RECENT YEARS. EDUCATION EXPERTS BELIEVE USING PODCASTS TO DELIVER NEW INFORMATION HAS SEVERAL ADVANTAGES. ONE OF ADVANTAGE IS THAT UNLIKE FORMAL WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES, PODCASTS ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE AT ANY TIME. THEY ALSO ALLOW EDUCATORS TO REACH MORE PEOPLE THAN THEY COULD UNDER NORMAL CLASSROOM SETTINGS. FOG BELIEVES THAT PODCASTS AND WEBINARS WILL PROVE TO BE AN EFFICIENT AND COST-EFFECTIVE WAY OF DELIVERY INFORMATION REGARDING FOOD SAFETY TOPICS TO AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS WHO HAVE TIME CONSTRAINTS AND ARE GEOGRAPHICALLY DISPERSED. OUR ROAD TO SAFE AND HEALTHY FOOD PODCAST PROJECT WILL INNOVATE HOW WE DELIVER USEFUL INFORMATION TO FARMERS IS KEY TO POSITIVELY INFLUENCING THEIR DECISIONS TO LISTEN AND BE RECEPTIVE TO CRITICAL INFORMATION THAT IS SHARED WITH THEM. HOOSIER GROWERS, LLC IS A SMALL, MULTI-SPECIES HALAL-CERTIFIED SLAUGHTER AND PROCESSING FACILITY IN NORTH- CENTRAL INDIANA WORKING TO OBTAIN A FEDERAL GRANT OF INSPECTION. THEY PROVIDE SLAUGHTER AND MINIMAL PROCESSING SERVICES UNDER CUSTOM EXEMPT STATUS ONLY TO PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS THAT BRING IN THEIR OWN ANIMALS FOR PRIVATE CONSUMPTION AFTER PROCESSING. THEY CURRENTLY PROCESS APPROXIMATELY FOUR HEAD OF CATTLE AND TEN SHEEP/GOATS PER WEEK, BUT ARE MISSING SOME EQUIPMENT NECESSARY TO SLAUGHTER HOGS. THEY'RE APPLYING FOR MPIR FUNDS TO MAKE EQUIPMENT AND FACILITY UPGRADES AND TO DEVELOP HAZARD ANALYSIS CRITICAL CONTROL POINT (HACCP) PLANS AND SANITATION STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES (SSOPS) NECESSARY TO OBTAIN A FEDERAL GRANT OF INSPECTION SO THAT THEY CAN (1) PROCESS ANIMALS UNDER INSPECTION TO SELL MEAT ACROSS INDIANA AND ACROSS STATE LINES, (2) PROCESS ANIMALS FOR OTHERS IN NEED OF INSPECTED PROCESSING TO SERVE THEIR CUSTOMER BASES, AND (3) PROCESS THE ANIMALS OF OTHER LOCAL PRODUCERS TO BE SOLD TO THE PUBLIC AT FARMER'S MARKETS, FARM- BASED MARKETS, AND TO WHOLESALE CUSTOMERS. WITH THE PROPOSED INVESTMENTS, THEIR CURRENT 9,400 SQUARE- FOOT FACILITY COULD REACH A CAPACITY, BASED ON AVAILABLE HANGING SPACE, OF 25 HEAD OF CATTLE OR 40 HEAD OF HOGS OR 60 HEAD OF SHEEP/GOATS PER WEEK. AN MPIR GRANT WOULD NOT ONLY HELP PAY FOR THE EQUIPMENT, SANITATION PLANS, AND FACILITY UPGRADES NECESSARY TO OBTAIN A FEDERAL GRANT OF INSPECTION FOR THE APPLICANT, BUT IT WOULD STRENGTHEN THE INDIANA FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN AND INCREASE THE SUPPLY OF LOCALLY PRODUCED MEAT PRODUCTS ACROSS THE STATE AND REGION. THIS PROJECTS PURPOSE IS TO IDENTIFY THE MOST EFFECTIVE PATH TO SUCCESS FOR A NOVEL MOBILE PROCESSING CONCEPT DESIGNED TO ENHANCE THE VALUE AND EXTEND THE SHELF LIFE OF FRESH PRODUCE WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY MINIMIZING WASTE. THE STUDY WILL INCORPORATE COMPREHENSIVE FEEDBACK FROM SEASONED FARMERS AND INDUSTRY ORGANIZATIONS TO ADDRESS A SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGE WITHIN THE GLOBAL FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN. THE PROJECT WILL EVALUATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MOBILE PROCESSING SYSTEM THE EXACT DETAILS OF WHICH ARE YET TO BE DETERMINED TO IMPROVE THE HANDLING AND PRESERVATION OF GEORGIAS ABUNDANT HARVEST. ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES INCLUDE INCREASED PRODUCER PROFITABILITY AND A REDUCTION IN LOSSES DURING THE PROCESSING STAGE. THE PRIMARY BENEFICIARIES OF THIS PROJECT ARE THE STATES FARMERS AS WELL AS THE CONSUMERS WHO ACCESS THIS IMPROVED PRODUCE THROUGH VARIOUS DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS. STAKEHOLDERS THROUGHOUT THE AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD PROCESSING SECTORS WILL ALSO BENEFIT FROM THE ENHANCED EFFICIENCY AND REDUCED WASTE. THE PROJECT AIMS TO CONTRIBUTE TO A MORE ROBUST AND RELIABLE SUPPLY OF FRESH PRODUCE FOR THE MARKET.
