THIS YEAR'S CONFERENCE WILL ENCOMPASS A WIDE RANGE OF MATERIALS SCIENCE TOPICS, INCLUDING NANOTECHNOLOGY, ENERGY, AND ADVANCED MATERIALS. LEADING INTERNATIONAL EXPERTS WILL PRESENT NEW RESEARCH AND SET FUTURE RESEARCH DIRECTIONS. HIGHLIGHTING THE AFRICAN MRS'S COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION AND BUILDING RESEARCH CAPACITY, THE CONFERENCE PROVIDES A UNIQUE PLATFORM FOR US AND AFRICAN STUDENTS TO INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER AND LEADERS. ORGANIZED BY THE AFRICAN MATERIALS RESEARCH SOCIETY (AMRS) WITH STRONG BACKING FROM THE US-BASED MRS, THE CORE OBJECTIVE IS TO ADVANCE KNOWLEDGE AND ENHANCE UNDERSTANDING IN VARIOUS FIELDS OF MATERIALS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, TO PROMOTE COLLABORATION AND PROGRESS IN MATERIALS RESEARCH, AND FOSTERS CONNECTIONS BETWEEN RESEARCHERS ACROSS THE GLOBE. THE AFRICAN-MRS CONFERENCES PLAY A CRUCIAL ROLE IN UNIFYING AFRICA'S MATERIALS RESEARCH COMMUNITY: THESE CONFERENCES BRING TOGETHER AFRICA'S RAPIDLY GROWING POOL OF MATERIALS RESEARCHERS BUT ALSO CONNECTING AFRICA TO GLOBAL RESEARCH BY BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN AFRICAN AND INTERNATIONAL MATERIALS RESEARCH, INCLUDING THE US. A KEY GOAL IS TO CREATE A PLATFORM FOR LEADING SCIENTISTS WORLDWIDE TO INTERACT WITH THEIR AFRICAN COUNTERPARTS, FOSTERING A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE IMPACT OF MATERIALS ON DEVELOPMENT, THE STATE OF MATERIALS SCIENCE IN AFRICA, THE RESEARCH NEEDS AND COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIES. THIS YEAR'S CONFERENCE WILL ENCOMPASS A WIDE RANGE OF MATERIALS SCIENCE TOPICS, INCLUDING NANOTECHNOLOGY, ENERGY, AND ADVANCED MATERIALS. THE AFRICAN-MRS CONFERENCE IS SPEARHEADED BY THE AFRICAN MRS, RWANDAN AND AFRICAN SCIENTISTS, AND BACKED BY THE US-BASED MRS. IT ACTS AS A CENTRAL HUB, DRAWING RESEARCHERS FROM ACROSS THE CONTINENT. LEADING INTERNATIONAL EXPERTS WILL PRESENT NEW RESEARCH AND SET FUTURE RESEARCH DIRECTIONS. HIGHLIGHTING THE AFRICAN MRS'S COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION AND BUILDING RESEARCH CAPACITY, THE CONFERENCE PROVIDES A UNIQUE PLATFORM FOR US AND AFRICAN STUDENTS TO INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER AND LEADERS. THIS YEAR'S BROAD THEMES INCLUDE BIOMATERIALS, AGRICULTURE, ENERGY, CONSTRUCTION, AND NANOTECHNOLOGY, WITH A SPECIAL SESSION ON THE AFRICAN LIGHT SOURCE PROJECT. PURPOSE:THE ADVANCEMENT OF NEUTRON SCATTERING RESEARCH IN THE UNITED STATES. THE ACNS SERVES AS BOTH A NATIONAL USER MEETING AND A SCIENTIFIC MEETING.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED:CARRY OUT EDUCATION ACTIVITIES TO IDENTIFY AND BRING TOGETHER THE NEUTRON SCATTERING COMMUNITY OF THE USA. IDENTIFY THEIR NEEDS, INCLUDING FUTURE REQUIREMENTS FOR INSTRUMENTATION AND SOURCES, TO REPRESENT THESE NEEDS TO THE NEUTRON FACILITIES AND FUNDING AGENCIES. STIMULATE, PROMOTE, AND BROADEN THE USE OF NEUTRON SCATTERING IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. EXPECTED OUTCOMES:THE 2022 AMERICAN CONFERENCE ON NEUTRON SCATTERING WILL ENCOURAGE AND SUPPORT THE ATTENDANCE OF UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS, POSTDOCS, YOUNG/EARLY CAREER FACULTY, AND INVITED SPEAKERS FROM US INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING. EMC TALKS, A MAJORITY OF WHICH ARE GIVEN BY STUDENTS, PRESENT CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH IN A WIDE RANGE OF FIELDS, INCLUDING SOLAR ENERGY MATERIALS, METAMATERIALS AND PLASMONICS, QUANTUM STRUCTURES, ELECTRICAL AND OPTICAL CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES, WIDE BANDGAP AND NARROW BANDGAP MATERIALS, NANOCOMPOSITES, 2D MATERIALS, AND MANY OTHERS. THE DESIGN, GROWTH AND SYNTHESIS, DEVELOPMENT, AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ELECTRONIC MATERIALS ARE CENTRAL TO A WIDE RANGE OF SCIENTIFIC FIELDS, FROM QUANTUM SENSING, COMMUNICATION, AND COMPUTATION TO RENEWABLE ENERGY, OPTICAL COMMUNICATION AND SENSING, DATA STORAGE, POWER SYSTEMS, AND NANO-ELECTRONICS. THE COMMERCIAL APPLICATION OF MOVPE CONTINUES TO EXPAND WORLD-WIDE AND IT IS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT THAT THE USA HAS TRAINED ENGINEERS WORKING IN THIS FIELD TO PROVIDE FOR THE US-BASED ECONOMIC EXPANSION. THE PARTICIPATION OF YOUNG SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE DISSEMINATION OF NEW KNOWLEDGE AND GENERATE AN IMPORTANT SOURCE OF NEW TECHNICAL HUMAN RESOURCES TRAINED IN THIS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT MATERIALS MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY. SUPPORTING STRONGER INTERACTIONS OF THESE NEW RESEARCH SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS WILL ADVANCE THEIR CAREERS AND SUPPORT THE GENERATION OF NEW TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES. NSF SUPPORT WILL HELP TO CREATE A STRONG AND ACTIVE CADRE OF NEW TALENT IN THE USA WHICH CAN CONTRIBUTE STRONGLY TO THE FUTURE OF THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF ADVANCED SEMICONDUCTOR PRODUCTION AND MANUFACTURING IN OUR COUNTRY. THE SYMPOSIUM WILL BRING SCIENTISTS FROM DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES FOR EXCHANGE OF IDEAS AND DEVELOP SYNERGISTIC ACTIVITIES. MAIN OBJECTIVES INCLUDE DISCUSSION OF RECENT ADVANCES IN EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS AND THE EXPERIMENTS THAT AIMED TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE TRANSPORT MECHANISMS IN BIOMOLECULAR SYSTEMS. BEYOND NANO, CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN DRUG DELIVERY - ABSTRACT THE BEYOND NANO, CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN DRUG DELIVERY SYMPOSIUM IS ONE OF THE SOFT MATERIALS AND BIOMATERIALS SYMPOSIUM CLUSTERS OF THE 2021 MRS SPRING MEETING & EXHIBIT, TO BE HELD ON APRIL 18-23, 2021, SEATTLE, WASHINGTON. THE THEME OF THE BEYOND NANO, CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN DRUG DELIVERY SYMPOSIUM IS THE REFLECTION ON NANO-/CANCER-CENTRIC DRUG DELIVERY RESEARCH THAT HAS DRIVEN THE FIELD IN PAST TWO DECADES AND THE EXPLORATION OF NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN DRUG DELIVERY TECHNOLOGIES WITH A SPECIFIC FOCUS ON A MATERIALS SCIENCE PERSPECTIVE. THE MRS MEETING IS A UNIQUE FORUM FOR SCIENTISTS AT ALL LEVELS, FROM EMINENT EXPERTS TO YOUNG SCIENTISTS, IN MULTIPLE DISCIPLINES RELATED TO MATERIALS SCIENCE, INCLUDING CHEMISTRY, ENGINEERING, AND OTHER APPLIED SCIENCES. THE MRS SOFT MATERIALS AND BIOMATERIALS SYMPOSIA HISTORICALLY ATTRACTED THE AUDIENCE IN THE FIELD OF DRUG DELIVERY AND TISSUE ENGINEERING WITH TOPICS RELATED TO CUTTING-EDGE BIOMEDICAL PRODUCTS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS SYMPOSIUM IS TO PROVIDE A FORUM FOR INVESTIGATORS AT ALL LEVELS IN ALLIED DISCIPLINES INCLUDING MATERIAL SCIENTISTS, CHEMISTS, ENGINEERS, AND PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENTISTS AND HELP THEM TO SHARE THE LESSONS LEARNED TO DATE, DISCUSS THE CHALLENGES AND INNOVATION IN MATERIALS SCIENCE IN OVERCOMING CURRENT BOTTLENECKS IN DRUG DELIVERY, AND CULTIVATE NEW OPPORTUNITIES THAT CAN BENEFIT FROM THE ADVANCES IN NANOMEDICINE. THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE CONSISTS OF FOUR EXPERTS IN DRUG DELIVERY FIELD ACROSS THE GLOBE: PROF. YOON YEO OF PURDUE UNIVERSITY (USA) CHAIRS THE SYMPOSIUM, AND PROFS. PATRICK STAYTON OF UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON (USA), YOUQING SHEN OF ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY (CHINA), AND YOSI SHAMAY (ISRAEL) SERVE AS CO-CHAIRS TO PLAN, ORGANIZE, AND MODERATE ACTIVITIES OF THE SYMPOSIUM. THE COMMITTEE HAS IDENTIFIED SIX THRUST AREAS OF FUNDAMENTAL AND CURRENT INTEREST IN DRUG DELIVERY FIELD: (I) MACHINE LEARNING FOR DRUG DELIVERY DESIGN; (II) NANOMEDICINE; (III) BIOINSPIRED MATERIALS FOR DRUG DELIVERY; (IV) LOCAL DRUG DELIVERY; (V) DRUG DELIVERY FOR GLOBAL HEALTH; AND (VI) BIOMATERIALS AND DRUG DELIVERY FOR IMMUNOTHERAPY; AND CONFIRMED THE PARTICIPATION OF TWENTY-THREE LEADERS AND RISING STARS AS INVITED SPEAKERS. WE PLAN TO ACHIEVE THREE SPECIFIC AIMS THROUGH THE BEYOND NANO, CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN DRUG DELIVERY SYMPOSIUM: AIM 1. CRITICALLY REFLECT ON THE ADVANCES AND CHALLENGES IN CORE FIELDS OF DRUG DELIVERY; AIM 2. DISCUSS THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN MATERIALS SCIENCE ON EMERGING FIELDS OF DRUG DELIVERY; AIM 3. PROVIDE A STIMULATING AND DYNAMIC CONVENTION TO ENGAGE AND INSPIRE EARLY-CAREER SCIENTISTS. THE NIH SYMPOSIUM SUPPORT IS BEING SOUGHT TO SUPPORT REGISTRATION FEES AND TRAVEL EXPENSES FOR INVITED SPEAKERS AND YOUNG INVESTIGATORS, PRIORITIZING (I) EARLY-CAREER INVITED SPEAKERS, AND (II) GRADUATE STUDENTS, POST-DOCTORAL TRAINEES, AND YOUNG INVESTIGATORS, INCLUDING MEMBERS OF UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY GROUPS.

BIOINSPIRED STRUCTURAL COMPOSITES: ADVANCES IN EXPERIMENTS, SIMULATIONS, AND AI BASED DESIGN -NON-TECHNICAL ABSTRACT THIS AWARD WILL SUPPORT A SYMPOSIUM AT THE 2022 SPRING MEETING OF THE MATERIALS RESEARCH SOCIETY (MRS), ENTITLED ?BIOINSPIRED STRUCTURAL COMPOSITES?ADVANCES IN EXPERIMENTS, SIMULATIONS AND AI-BASED DESIGN? (SF12). THE EVENT WILL BE HELD DURING MAY 8-13, 2022, AT THE HAWAI?I CONVENTION CENTER IN HONOLULU, HI, AS WELL AS DURING THE VIRTUAL MRS SPRING MEETING DURING MAY 23-25. THE SYMPOSIUM WILL BRING TOGETHER MANY OF THE WORLD?S LEADING EXPERTS IN BIOINSPIRED COMPOSITES RESEARCH, WHICH HAS APPLICATIONS IN FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, DEFENSE, AEROSPACE, AND COMMERCIAL TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGIES. THE EVENT ALSO EMPHASIZES TOPICS FROM ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) AND SIMULATION IN CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS AND ENGINEERING OF COMPOSITES THAT HAVE NOT BEEN COVERED IN PREVIOUS MEETINGS. THE SYMPOSIUM WILL BRING TOGETHER LEADING SCIENTISTS, JUNIOR SCIENTISTS, AND ATTENDEES FROM AN INTERDISCIPLINARY AND DIVERSE RESEARCH COMMUNITY TO FOSTER CROSS-CUTTING IDEA EXCHANGE AND NEW COLLABORATIONS IN THE TOPICAL AREA OF BIOINSPIRED COMPOSITE MATERIALS AND DATA-DRIVEN DESIGN OF COMPLEX MATERIALS. THE AIM OF THE SYMPOSIUM IS THE INTEGRATION OF ADVANCES IN MULTIDISCIPLINARY AREAS INTO CONVERGENT RESEARCH EFFORTS TO IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE OF EXISTING MATERIALS AND UNCOVER EMERGENT PROMISING MATERIALS, INCLUDING HIGH-THROUGHPUT AND AUTOMATED EXPERIMENTS, COMPUTATION, AND DATA-DRIVEN DISCOVERY. NSF FUNDS WILL HELP TO BROADEN PARTICIPATION AT THE SYMPOSIUM AND WILL SUPPORT SPEAKERS AND ATTENDEES WITH AN EMPHASIS ON INCLUDING WOMEN AND UNDER-REPRESENTED MINORITIES. TECHNICAL ABSTRACT THIS AWARD WILL SUPPORT THE SYMPOSIUM ON ?BIOINSPIRED STRUCTURAL COMPOSITES?ADVANCES IN EXPERIMENTS, SIMULATIONS AND AI-BASED DESIGN? (SF12), TO BE HELD MAY 8-13, 2022, AT THE HAWAI?I CONVENTION CENTER IN HONOLULU, HI, AS WELL AS DURING THE VIRTUAL MRS SPRING MEETING DURING MAY 23-25. THE SYMPOSIUM AIMS AT CONNECTING SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS WITH EXPERTISE IN DIFFERENT RESEARCH FIELDS RELATED TO STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL COMPOSITES, SUCH AS PHYSICS, MATERIALS SCIENCE, BIOLOGY, POLYMER SCIENCE, BIOENGINEERING, CHEMISTRY, MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, AND DATA SCIENCE TO ADVANCE CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH TOOLS AND DESIGN INNOVATIVE MATERIALS FOR TRANSPORTATION, AERIAL VEHICLES, AEROSPACE, ELECTRONICS, AND MEDICAL DEVICE TECHNOLOGY. CONTRIBUTIONS WILL INCLUDE TAILORING MATERIAL INTERFACES AND HIERARCHICAL DESIGN, ADVANCES IN CHARACTERIZATION USING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY (STEM, EELS, AND ELECTRON TOMOGRAPHY), SCANNING PROBE MICROSCOPY (AFM, AFM-IR, PEAK FORCE, K-AFM, STM-AFM, C-AFM), FLUORESCENCE MICROSCOPY, SPECTROSCOPY, AND NANO X-RAY TOMOGRAPHY TO VISUALIZE AND ASSESS MORPHOLOGY-PROPERTY RELATIONSHIPS AT MULTIPLE LENGTH SCALES FROM ATOMS TO METERS. IN ADDITION, THERE WILL BE CONTRIBUTIONS THAT FOCUS ON INSPIRATION FROM NATURE, BIOLOGY, AND BIOENGINEERING WILL FORM AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE SYMPOSIUM. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN DATA ANALYSIS, AUTONOMOUS OPTIMIZATION, MULTISCALE SIMULATION (QUANTUM-MECHANICAL, ATOMISTIC, COARSE-GRAINED) AND AI FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF MOLECULAR AND INTERFACIAL INTERACTIONS, CHEMICAL REACTION KINETICS, GROWTH OF DIFFERENT PHASES (NODULES, AMORPHOUS, CRYSTALLINE, INTERDIGITATED), AND PROPERTY PREDICTIONS WILL BE PRESENTED. THROUGH PRESENTATIONS AND DISCUSSIONS, THE SYMPOSIUM WILL FOSTER ADVANCES IN CONVERGENT RESEARCH EFFORTS THAT INTEGRATE TRADITIONAL AND HIGH-THROUGHPUT EXPERIMENTS, APPLICATIONS IN MEDICINE, DATA SCIENCE, SIMULATION, AND ML METHODS. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.
