ECDI FOOD MANUFACTURING JOB CREATION INITIATIVE - THE ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE (ECDI) WILL USE $800,000 IN CED FUNDS TO HELP DOS HERMANOS, A SUCCESSFUL LOCAL MEXICAN RESTAURANT IN COLUMBUS, OHIO, EXPAND INTO THE CONSUMER-PACKAGED GOODS MARKET BY SCALING ITS JARRED SALSAS, GUACAMOLE, AND SAUCE PRODUCTION FOR WHOLESALE AND RETAIL DISTRIBUTION. DOS HERMANOS IS AN EDCI-SUPPORTED RESTAURANT EMPLOYING PEOPLE ACROSS THE COLUMBUS AREA WITH 5 BRICK-AND-MORTAR LOCATIONS, 5 MOBILE FOOD TRUCKS, A TACO CART, CONCESSION, AND CATERING SERVICES. CED FUNDS WILL BE USED TO PURCHASE EQUIPMENT AND RENOVATE PART OF EXTANT CULINARY BUSINESS INCUBATION SPACE OWNED BY ECDI TO SUPPORT DOS HERMANOS IN THEIR EXPANSION. TO SUPPORT THE RETENTION OF INDIVIDUALS HIRED THROUGH THIS PROJECT, ECDI WILL UTILIZE ITS RELATIONSHIPS WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS TO OFFER A VARIETY OF WRAPAROUND SUPPORTIVE SERVICES INCLUDING CHILDCARE ASSISTANCE, CAREER COACHING, FINANCIAL LITERACY EDUCATION AND COACHING, AND SOCIAL SERVICE NAVIGATION. ADDITIONALLY, ECDI WILL PARTNER WITH ACCOMPANYING RETURNING CITIZENS WITH HOPE (ARCH), A LOCAL ORGANIZATION, TO HELP JUSTICE INVOLVED INDIVIDUALS RE-ENTER SOCIETY THROUGH GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT. EMPLOYEES WILL ALSO HAVE ACCESS TO THE SUITE OF BENEFITS OFFERED BY DOS HERMANOS INCLUDING HEALTHCARE, PAID TIME OFF, AND RETIREMENT SAVINGS. THIS PROJECT WILL CREATE 25 NEW JOBS, 19 OF WHICH WILL BE FILLED BY INDIVIDUALS WITH LOW INCOMES.

THE REGION, THOUGH HARD HIT BY SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC MISFORTUNE, REMAINS RICH IN AGRICULTURAL RESOURCES. THE AREA POSSESSES SOME OF THE LAST AFFORDABLE FARMLAND IN THE STATE AND A BURGEONING COMMUNITY OF SMALL SCALE FARMS WHO ARE PARTICIPATING IN THE LOCAL FOOD ECONOMY. ECDI WISHES TO LEVERAGE ITS EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE FUNDING, INCUBATING, AND SUPPORTING FOOD BASED BUSINESSES TO PARTNER WITH A GROUP OF SMALL FARMERS IN SOUTHWEST OHIO TO DESIGN A REGIONAL FOOD HUB WITH THE FACILITIES AND PROGRAMS NECESSARY TO STRENGTHEN THE LOCAL AND REGIONAL FOOD ECONOMY. THE VISION IS TO COMBINE AN INCREASE IN PROCESSING, MARKETING, AND DISTRIBUTION CAPACITY CENTERED AROUND THE PASTURE RAISED EGG ENTERPRISES THAT ARE ALREADY PRESENT AND SUCCESSFUL ON MANY FARMS, WITH THE EXPANSION AND SUPPORT OF THE POPULATION OF SMALL FARMERS IN THE AREA THROUGH INCUBATOR PROGRAMS. AGGREGATING, PROCESSING, MARKETING, AND DISTRIBUTING PASTURED EGGS AND OTHER PRODUCTION FROM SMALL FARMS PRESENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO ACCESS COMMERCIAL AND INSTITUTIONAL BUYERS AS WELL AS DIRECT TO CONSUMER SALES CHANNELS THROUGH AN AGGREGATED CSA MODEL. WE BELIEVE IT IS POSSIBLE TO DESIGN A DISTRIBUTION CENTER THAT CAN REMAIN FINANCIALLY SELF SUFFICIENT WHILE GROWING AND MENTORING THE NEXT GENERATION OF SMALL FARMERS. THE RESULTING STUDY WILL BE A DESIGN FOR A FACILITY AND PROGRAMS THAT WILL ADDRESS AT LEAST 11 OF THE 14 LFPP PROJECT ACTIVITY CATEGORIES.
