COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: RUI: UNCOVERING EUSOCIAL PATHWAYS AND CONSEQUENCES: PHYLOGENOMICS, MORPHOLOGICAL, AND MOLECULAR EVOLUTION IN SYNALPHEUS SNAPPING SHRIMPS. -TYPIFIED BY OBLIGATE GROUP LIVING AND REPRODUCTIVE DIVISION OF LABOR, EUSOCIAL BEHAVIOR IS CONSIDERED THE APEX OF ANIMAL SOCIAL ORGANIZATION. WITHIN A EUSOCIAL COLONY, A SINGLE OR SUBSET OF INDIVIDUALS (QUEENS) PERFORM ALL REPRODUCTIVE DUTIES WHILE OTHERS (WORKERS) FORGO THEIR OWN REPRODUCTION AND UNDERTAKE TASKS RELATED TO BROOD CARE, NEST MAINTENANCE, OR RESOURCE ACQUISITION. THIS PROFOUND AND ECOLOGICALLY IMPACTFUL BEHAVIORAL TRANSITION HAS ARISEN AT LEAST 19 TIMES IN ANIMALS. REMARKABLY, NEARLY ONE FOURTH OF KNOWN EVOLUTIONARY ORIGINS OF EUSOCIALITY HAVE OCCURRED WITHIN A GENUS OF SPONGE-DWELLING SNAPPING SHRIMPS CALLED SYNALPHEUS. HOWEVER, WHY AND HOW EUSOCIALITY EVOLVED IN THESE AQUATIC ANIMALS REMAINS UNCLEAR AND THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS MAY REVEAL POTENTIAL UNIVERSAL REQUIREMENTS OR CONSEQUENCES RELATING TO ADVANCED SOCIAL COMPLEXITY. THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO RECONSTRUCT THE EVOLUTIONARY RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SPECIES IN THIS GENUS TO IDENTIFY MORPHOLOGICAL AND GENOMIC CHANGES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THE TRANSITIONS TO ADVANCED SOCIALITY. THE PROJECT WILL GENERATE OPEN ACCESS RESOURCES THAT WILL BE USED TO TEST POTENTIALLY UNIVERSAL ?LAWS? RELATED TO SOCIAL EVOLUTION ACROSS ANIMAL LINEAGES. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO SUPPORT NUMEROUS RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AS WELL AS EDUCATIONAL CONTENT FOR K-12 SCHOOLS AND WEB-BASED CHANNELS. THE PROJECT WILL GENERATE GENOMIC AND PHENOTYPIC DATA SPANNING ABOUT 130 SPECIES OF SYNALPHEUS SNAPPING SHRIMPS WORLDWIDE. THESE DATA WILL BE USED TO 1) RECONSTRUCT A DATED PHYLOGENY OF SYNALPHEUS TAXA USING PHYLOGENOMIC METHODS; 2) EVALUATE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EUSOCIALITY AND MOLECULAR EVOLUTION; AND 3) RECOVER MORPHOLOGICAL PREADAPTATIONS AND CONSEQUENCES OF EUSOCIALITY. GENOMIC DATA WILL BE SEQUENCED THROUGH TARGETED ENRICHMENT OF PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED AND NEWLY DEVELOPED PROBE SETS. MORPHOLOGICAL DATA WILL BE GENERATED THROUGH TRADITIONAL MICROSCOPY AND X-RAY BASED MICRO-CT-SCANNING OF CLOSELY RELATED SPECIES SPANNING DIFFERENT SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS. BOTH GENOMIC AND PHENOTYPIC DATA WILL BE ANALYZED USING PHYLOGENETIC COMPARATIVE METHODS ENABLED WITH INITIAL PHYLOGENETIC PRODUCTS. PROJECT ACTIVITIES WILL IDENTIFY PATTERNS OF MOLECULAR EVOLUTION BETWEEN EUSOCIAL AND NON-EUSOCIAL SPECIES TO TEST HYPOTHESES SUGGESTING THAT SOCIAL ORGANIZATION AFFECTS RATES OF MOLECULAR EVOLUTION VIA DEMOGRAPHIC EFFECTS SUCH AS REDUCED EFFECTIVE POPULATION SIZES AND INCREASED GENERATION TIME. THROUGH 3D MORPHOMETRIC ANALYSES, THE PROJECT WILL WORK TO UNCOVER MORPHOLOGICAL PREADAPTATIONS TO EUSOCIAL ORIGINS, IMPACTS OF SOCIAL BEHAVIOR ON MORPHOLOGICAL EVOLUTION, AND PUTATIVELY CONTINGENT OR DETERMINISTIC PATHWAYS TOWARD CONVERGENT PHENOTYPIC SYNDROMES. RUI: NEGATIVE ION SPECTROSCOPY AND DYNAMICS -THE PRIMARY GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO IMPROVE THE UNDERSTANDING OF HOW ELECTRONS INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER ON THE ATOMIC SCALE, WHICH IS CRUCIAL FOR THE STABILITY OF ATOMS AND FOR THE FORMATION OF MOLECULES THROUGH CHEMICAL REACTIONS. TO GAIN INSIGHTS INTO ELECTRON INTERACTIONS, THE FACULTY AND UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCHERS WILL EXPERIMENTALLY INVESTIGATE THE PROPERTIES OF NEGATIVE IONS (ATOMS WITH AN EXTRA ELECTRON). NEGATIVE IONS ARE IMPORTANT IN A WIDE VARIETY OF PHYSICAL SITUATIONS RANGING FROM ELECTRICAL SPARKS TO THE ATMOSPHERES OF PLANETS AND STARS. IN EXPERIMENTS AT DENISON UNIVERSITY (AN UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTION) AND AT A NATIONAL LAB FACILITY IN SWEDEN, LASER LIGHT WILL BE USED TO EXCITE OR DETACH ELECTRONS FROM NEGATIVE IONS; THE LASER SUPPLIES A FINELY CONTROLLED AMOUNT OF INPUT ENERGY TO PROBE INTERACTIONS WITHIN THE IONS. THE RESULTS WILL BUILD THE FUNDAMENTAL ATOMIC PHYSICS DATABASE, PROVIDE VALUABLE TESTS OF STATE-OF-THE-ART THEORETICAL ATOMIC STRUCTURE CALCULATIONS, AND YIELD KEY INSIGHTS INTO DYNAMICAL MANY-BODY INTERACTIONS, WHICH IS A TOPIC OF INTEREST FOR A BROAD RANGE OF FIELDS IN PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY, MATERIALS SCIENCE, AND NANOTECHNOLOGY. STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE RESEARCH, PROVIDING SIGNIFICANT TECHNICAL TRAINING FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS IN CUTTING-EDGE ELECTRONICS, LASERS, AND COMPUTERS, AND ENHANCING THEIR ABILITY FOR FUTURE CAREERS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND ENGINEERING. THE INTERACTIONS OF PHOTONS WITH NEGATIVE IONS WILL BE INVESTIGATED IN TWO SERIES OF PHOTOEXCITATION AND PHOTODETACHMENT EXPERIMENTS. THE EXTRA ELECTRON IN A NEGATIVE ION IS BOUND PREDOMINANTLY BY ELECTRON CORRELATION EFFECTS AND THEREFORE NEGATIVE IONS PROVIDE A FERTILE TESTING GROUND FOR DETAILED ATOMIC PHYSICS CALCULATIONS REGARDING THESE MULTI-BODY INTERACTIONS. PLANNED STUDIES OF THE NEGATIVE ION OF THORIUM ARE PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT IS A PROMISING CANDIDATE FOR LASER COOLING, WHICH HAS NOT YET BEEN ACHIEVED WITH NEGATIVE IONS BUT COULD POTENTIALLY OPEN UP THE ULTRACOLD REGIME FOR A WIDE RANGE OF NEGATIVELY-CHARGED SPECIES THROUGH SYMPATHETIC COLLISIONAL COOLING. ON-CAMPUS AT DENISON UNIVERSITY, THE FACULTY AND STUDENT RESEARCHERS WILL USE AN ION BEAM?TUNABLE INFRARED LASER SYSTEM TO MEASURE MULTIPLE BOUND STATES OF THE THORIUM ANION WITH RESONANT TWO-PHOTON DETACHMENT SPECTROSCOPY. THEY WILL ALSO USE PHOTODETACHMENT THRESHOLD SPECTROSCOPY TO MEASURE THE ISOTOPE SHIFT IN THE ELECTRON AFFINITY OF THALLIUM, WHICH IS SENSITIVE TO INTERACTIONS OF ELECTRONS BOTH WITH EACH OTHER AND WITH THE NUCLEUS. COMPLEMENTARY EXPERIMENTS OF EXCITED STATE LIFETIMES, DECAY PROCESSES, AND ISOTOPE SHIFTS IN NEGATIVE IONS WILL BE PERFORMED AT STOCKHOLM UNIVERSITY IN SWEDEN USING THE CRYOGENIC ELECTROSTATIC ION STORAGE RING DESIREE. THE DYNAMIC MULTI-ELECTRON INTERACTIONS IN HIGHLY-CORRELATED NEGATIVE IONS CONTINUE TO CHALLENGE THE FUNDAMENTAL UNDERSTANDING OF ATOMIC STRUCTURE, AND THIS PROJECT WILL EXTEND THE AVAILABLE EXPERIMENTAL DATA TO MORE COMPLEX NEGATIVE ION SYSTEMS, SPUR NEW THEORETICAL STUDIES, AND DIRECTLY ADDRESS PRESSING OPEN QUESTIONS IN THE FIELD. SUPPORT FROM THIS GRANT WILL ENHANCE THE RESEARCH AND TEACHING INFRASTRUCTURE OF DENISON UNIVERSITY AND PROVIDE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS VALUABLE RESEARCH EXPERIENCES AND TECHNICAL TRAINING WHICH WILL PREPARE THEM FOR ADVANCED STUDY AND STEM CAREERS. RATHER, EACH SPECIES EXHIBITS GROWTH, REPRODUCTION, MORTALITY, AND MOVEMENT PATTERNS THAT ARE THE RESULT OF CHANGING CONDITIONS. NATURAL AND HUMAN-DRIVEN DISTURBANCES CAN HAVE SUBSTANTIAL SHORT-TERM OR LONG-TERM EFFECTS ON SPECIES POPULATIONS, AND IN TURN, ON THE OVERALL BIODIVERSITY WITHIN A SYSTEM. SHORT-TERM DISTURBANCES, KNOWN AS ?PULSE DISTURBANCES?, CAN HAVE RAPID POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE IMPACTS ON SPECIES POPULATIONS, FOLLOWED BY PERIODS OF RECOVERY. LONG-TERM DISTURBANCES, KNOWN AS ?PRESS DISTURBANCES?, ARE CHRONIC OR ONGOING CHANGES TO THE ENVIRONMENT THAT ARE PREDICTED TO CAUSE DIRECTIONAL (INCREASED OR DECREASED) CHANGES IN SPECIES POPULATIONS AND OVERALL BIODIVERSITY. TO FULLY UNDERSTAND THE EFFECTS OF DISTURBANCE ON BIODIVERSITY, IT IS NECESSARY TO DISTINGUISH THE PATTERNS OF SPECIES THAT ARE ENTERING AND EXITING THE COMMUNITY THROUGH TIME. SUCH A METHOD WILL ALLOW IDENTIFICATION OF SPECIES THAT ARE BECOMING LOCALLY UPROOTED, ESTABLISHING, OR EXHIBITING RECURRENT OR RANDOM OCCURRENCE THROUGH TIME. THIS STUDY WILL USE LONG-TERM ECOLOGICAL EXPERIMENTS ON THE EFFECTS OF FIRE (PULSE) AND GRAZING (PRESS) DISTURBANCE TREATMENTS FROM THE WELL-ESTABLISHED KONZA PRAIRIE LONG-TERM ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH (LTER) NETWORK SITE ACROSS PLANTS, INSECTS, BIRDS, AND SMALL MAMMALS. THE RESEARCH WILL SUPPORT UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AND EDUCATION ACTIVITIES AT A SMALL LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGE AND FINDINGS WILL BE SHARED THROUGH OPEN ACCESS PUBLICATION. THIS WORK INVESTIGATES A NOVEL CLASSIFICATION METHODOLOGY FOR SEQUENTIAL SPECIES PRESENCE AND ABSENCE (INCIDENCE) PATTERNS AND USES LONG-TERM CONTROL-EXPERIMENT COMPARISONS WITH 15 OR MORE YEARS OF DATA TO TEST THE LEVEL OF ECOLOGICAL DISTURBANCE NEEDED FOR SPECIES TO ?SWITCH? THEIR INCIDENCE. THE WORK WILL BE REPEATED ACROSS TWO MAIN TREATMENTS REPRESENTING PULSE (FIRE) AND PRESS (GRAZING) DISTURBANCE TYPES, AND WILL COMPARE THE FINDINGS ACROSS PLANT AND ANIMAL (INSECT, BIRD, SMALL MAMMAL) TAXONOMIC GROUPS. THE RESEARCH WILL GENERATE ESTIMATES OF CHANGES IN POPULATION ABUNDANCE, THE PROPORTION OF YEARS PRESENT, AND THE INCIDENCE CLASSIFICATION FOR EACH SPECIES POPULATION AND COMPARE AMONG THE CONTROLS AND DISTURBANCE TREATMENTS. SPECIES-LEVEL DATA WILL INFORM UNDERSTANDING OF POPULATION ABUNDANCE, PERSISTENCE, AND INCIDENCE TRENDS, THE CO-VARIATION OR DECOUPLING OF THESE THREE MEASURES, AND INFORM HOW PULSE AND PRESS DISTURBANCE REGIMES IMPACT POPULATIONS AND ULTIMATELY COMMUNITY STRUCTURE AND BIODIVERSITY. THE INCIDENCE CLASSIFICATION METHODOLOGY IS NOT SYSTEM- OR TAXA- SPECIFIC AND THIS RESEARCH WOULD PROVIDE A FIRST TEST OF THE NEW APPROACH IN DISTURBED SYSTEMS THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO UNCOVER NEW TRENDS NOT IDENTIFIED USING ABUNDANCE OR PERSISTENCE METHODOLOGIES ALONE. BECAUSE ACTIVE SEISMICITY OCCURS ALONG FAULTS THAT CAN BE EXPRESSED AT OR HIDDEN BELOW EARTH?S SURFACE, THE NATURE AND HISTORY OF THESE ENIGMATIC STRUCTURES REMAINS DEBATED. SEVERAL COMPETING GEOLOGIC MODELS HAVE BEEN PROPOSED THAT LINK THE SEISMICITY AT DEPTH WITH FAULTS AND MOUNTAIN RANGES EXPRESSED AT EARTH?S SURFACE. THIS PROJECT WILL ADDRESS THESE DEBATES THROUGH FIELDWORK TO MAP FAULT RELATIONSHIPS AND MEASUREMENT OF ASSOCIATED SEDIMENTARY BASIN DEPOSITS THAT RECORD THE UPLIFT AND EROSION HISTORY OF ACTIVELY GROWING ANDEAN RANGES. A VARIETY OF GEOCHRONOLOGIC AND LOW-TEMPERATURE THERMOCHRONOLOGIC ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES WILL BE EMPLOYED TO DETERMINE THE TIMING AND MAGNITUDE OF DEFORMATION ACROSS THE GEOLOGICAL STRUCTURES. RESULTS WILL BE INTEGRATED USING COMPUTATIONAL MODELS TO HELP RESOLVE THE DEBATED GEOLOGIC HISTORY FOR THESE ANDEAN RANGES. NEW FIELD AND ANALYTICAL RECORDS OF LONG-TERM FAULT DEFORMATION WILL BE INTEGRATED WITH GEOPHYSICAL OBSERVATIONS AND DECADES OF EARTHQUAKE DATA WITH THE HELP OF COLLABORATING ARGENTINIAN SCIENTISTS. THIS WILL LEAD TO A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW TECTONIC FORCES ARE PARTITIONED AMONG DEEP AND SURFICIAL GEOLOGIC STRUCTURES AND WHICH FAULTS MAY GENERATE LARGE MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKES, INFORMATION THAT IS CRITICAL FOR ASSESSMENTS OF ANDEAN EARTHQUAKE HAZARDS WITH THE POTENTIAL TO IMPACT HUMAN POPULATIONS AND INFRASTRUCTURE. IN ADDITION TO THE SCIENTIFIC GOALS OF THE RESEARCH, THE AWARD SUPPORTS THE DEVELOPMENT OF INFRASTRUCTURE TO SUPPORT THE ENGAGEMENT OF DIVERSE AND HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED HIGH SCHOOL, UNDERGRADUATE, AND PHD-LEVEL STUDENTS IN GEOSCIENCE RESEARCH AND EDUCATION. THIS WILL INVOLVE MENTORING UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS AT THE PARTICIPATING INSTITUTIONS AND CREATING A PLACE-BASED EDUCATIONAL VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP THROUGH THE WESTERN USA AND FIELD AREA IN ARGENTINA. TECTONIC STRESSES ASSOCIATED WITH FLAT SLAB SUBDUCTION HAVE DRIVEN DEFORMATION 800 KM INBOARD ACROSS THE BROKEN FORELAND OF WEST-CENTRAL ARGENTINA. ONGOING SHORTENING ACCOMMODATED WITHIN THE OVERLAPPING THIN-SKINNED AND BASEMENT-INVOLVED STRUCTURAL PROVINCES MAKES THIS BROKEN FORELAND REGION ONE OF THE MOST SEISMICALLY ACTIVE PLACES ON EARTH. HOWEVER, THERE IS NO CONSENSUS ON THE STRUCTURAL OR KINEMATIC LINKS BETWEEN THE THIN-SKINNED CENTRAL PRECORDILLERA, THE SIERRAS PAMPEANAS BASEMENT UPLIFTS, OR THE ENIGMATIC THRUST FRONT OF THE EASTERN PRECORDILLERA STRUCTURAL DOMAIN. THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS AIM TO RESOLVE THE TEMPORAL AND KINEMATIC RELATIONSHIPS AMONG STRUCTURES BY (1) DETERMINING THE TIMING AND MAGNITUDE OF DEFORMATION IN THE EASTERN PRECORDILLERA THRUST FRONT AND (2) INTERROGATING HOW SPATIAL PATTERNS IN EXHUMATIONAL COOLING AND SUBSIDENCE COINCIDE WITH PREDICTIONS BASED ON THE VARIOUS STRUCTURAL GEOMETRIES AND KINEMATICS PROPOSED FOR THE REGION. THEIR RESEARCH PLAN WILL INTEGRATE GEOLOGIC AND STRUCTURAL MAPPING, BASIN ANALYSIS, GEO- AND THERMOCHRONOLOGY, AND FLEXURAL THERMOKINEMATIC MODELING TO DISCRIMINATE BETWEEN HYPOTHESIZED STRUCTURAL MODELS. EVALUATING SPATIAL-TEMPORAL RELATIONSHIPS AMONG THE SEISMICALLY ACTIVE, STRUCTURAL DOMAINS IN ARGENTINA WILL INFORM MODELS OF SUBSURFACE STRUCTURAL GEOMETRIES, HOW SHORTENING TRANSFERS FROM LOWER TO UPPER CRUSTAL LEVELS, AND THE LONG-TERM INTERACTIONS BETWEEN FRONTAL THRUST STRUCTURES AND FORELAND-BASIN SEDIMENTATION. NEW RESULTS WILL QUANTIFY THE EFFECTS OF ENHANCED MECHANICAL COUPLING BETWEEN THE SUBDUCTING AND OVERRIDING PLATE DURING FLAT SLAB SUBDUCTION, WHICH DICTATES THE THERMO-TECTONIC EVOLUTION OF OROGENESIS AND TOPOGRAPHIC GROWTH AND DECAY OF MOUNTAIN BELTS. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.
