| National Science Foundation | SBIR PHASE II: AN IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL REALITY PLATFORM FOR REMOTE PHYSICAL THERAPY AND MONITORING -THE BROADER IMPACT/COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL OF THIS SMALL BUSINESS INNOVATION RESEARCH (SBIR) PHASE II PROJECT CONCERNS GREATER AFFORDABILITY, ACCESSIBILITY, AND ACCURACY OF PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR PATIENTS AND THERAPISTS. THE PRODUCT TO BE COMMERCIALIZED WILL CONTRIBUTE TO DEVELOPING INNOVATION AROUND IMMERSIVE TELEHEALTH EXPERIENCES, EXPLORING THE FUTURE OF WORK FOR PHYSICAL REHABILITATION IN THE METAVERSE, ESTABLISHING STANDARDS IN EMBODIED TELEHEALTH, AND GROUNDING NOVEL SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH METHODS WITHIN VR FOR HEALTHCARE FROM A CALIFORNIA-BASED STARTUP WITH THE GOAL OF INCREASING ACCESS TO CARE. ESTABLISHING A REMOTE IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL PLATFORM WILL PROVIDE A MEANS FOR IN-PATIENT SUCCESS METRICS AND FULL-BODY VIRTUAL GUIDANCE. PATIENT THROUGHPUT POTENTIALLY COULD BE DOUBLED THROUGH REMOTE VISITS IN VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS AND AUTOMATED PHYSICAL HEALTH DOCUMENTATION. THE PLATFORM WILL BE DESIGNED WITH ACCESSIBILITY IN MIND WITH PATIENTS FROM MEDICAL DESERTS, WHERE PATIENT CARE IS SIGNIFICANTLY LIMITED BY HOSPITAL CAPACITY, PHYSICAL DISTANCE, DOCTORS PER POPULATION, AND COST. REMOTE PHYSICAL REHABILITATION TOOLS AND PREDICTIVE PHYSICAL THERAPY ANALYTICS WILL BENEFIT PATIENTS WITHOUT ADEQUATE INSURANCE COVERAGE. THIS TECHNOLOGY COULD LOWER HOSPITAL VISITS, ENABLE CLINICS TO REMAIN OPEN DURING FUTURE PANDEMIC PERIODS, DECREASE COSTS FOR PATIENTS AND CLINICS ALIKE, AND BEGIN DETECTING PHYSICAL HEALTH NEEDS EARLIER TO HELP MANAGE THE PACE OF RECOVERY. THE PROPOSED PROJECT AIMS TO EXPAND A NOVEL PHYSICAL REHABILITATION TELEHEALTH SOLUTION THROUGH THE CONTINUED RESEARCH OF AN INSTRUMENTED AND GAMIFIED IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL REALITY PLATFORM FOR PHYSICAL THERAPY AND HEALTHCARE MONITORING. THIS TECHNOLOGY ADDRESSES THE SHORTCOMINGS OF WIDELY USED TELEHEALTH PLATFORMS (OFTEN VIDEOCONFERENCING) WHERE THERAPISTS FIND IT DIFFICULT TO PERFORM COMMON EVALUATIONS SUCH AS MOVEMENT ABILITIES AND BALANCE COORDINATION TESTS. THE SOLUTION WILL EXPAND UPON AN EMBODIED TELEHEALTH PLATFORM WITH 3D VIRTUAL AVATARS AND PREDICTIVE AI TOOLS TO ASSESS USER BIOMECHANICS IN REAL-TIME EXTENDING TO FULL-BODY ASSESSMENT WHILE PROVIDING NORMATIVE ASSESSMENT METRICS, CREATING A GOAL STANDARD FOR REMOTE PHYSICAL THERAPY CARE. THE DEVELOPMENT METHOD WILL CONTINUE TO UTILIZE USER-CENTERED DESIGN WITH A PANEL OF THERAPISTS TO ENSURE ACCESSIBILITY AND USABILITY OF THE PROTOTYPE SYSTEMS BY THEIR RELEVANT STAKEHOLDERS. SUCH RESEARCH WILL INCORPORATE PREDICTIVE BIOMECHANICAL ANALYSIS TO INCREASE THE RELIABILITY AND REPEATABILITY OF PHYSICAL THERAPY MEASURES AND EXERCISE PROGRAMS FOR REMOTE MONITORING AT THE CLINIC OR THE PATIENT?S HOME. ITERATIVE PROTOTYPING WITH USER EXPERIENCE WILL BE CONDUCTED TO ESTABLISH IN-PATIENT SUCCESS METRICS AND FULL-BODY VIRTUAL ASSESSMENT. THIS INNOVATION WILL ENABLE GREATER AFFORDABILITY, USABILITY, AND EFFECTIVENESS OF PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR PATIENTS AND THERAPISTS. THE COMPLETE AUTOMATION OF THE SYSTEM?S OPERATION COULD FURTHER BENEFIT THE ~$3.3B GLOBAL PRECLINICAL PAIN RESEARCH MARKET WHILE IMPROVING THE TRANSLATIONAL VIABILITY BY GENERATING CLEANER DATA, MEASURING PAIN, AND NOT JUST STIMULUS SENSITIVITY. BY YEAR 3 OF PRODUCTION POST-AWARD, $1.85 MILLION IN REVENUE IS EXPECTED FROM HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE PRODUCTS. IN ADDITION, THIS SYSTEM LOWERS THE IMPEDIMENTS AND REDUCES INJURY POTENTIAL FOR RESEARCHERS WHO TRADITIONALLY COULD NOT PERFORM PAIN BEHAVIOR ASSAYS DUE TO THEIR HIGH TRAINING REQUIREMENTS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING NATURE. THIS IS EXPECTED TO BENEFIT TRAINEES, SPUR INNOVATION BY ALLOWING NEW LABS TO EASILY ACCESS THESE ASSAYS. THE PROPOSED PROJECT AIMS TO ASSESS THE COMMERCIAL FEASIBILITY OF A NEW BEHAVIOR TESTING AND ANALYSIS SYSTEM FOR USE IN PRECLINICAL PAIN RESEARCH. PRECLINICAL RODENT PAIN RESEARCH IS A KEY PART OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW PAIN-RELIEVING THERAPIES FOR THE 20% OF US ADULTS CURRENTLY LIVING WITH UNDERTREATED CHRONIC PAIN. UNFORTUNATELY, THE CURRENT GOLD STANDARD OF VON FREY TESTING HAS SIGNIFICANT CONFOUNDS DUE TO MANUAL AIMING AND STIMULUS DELIVERY AND SUFFERS FROM LIMITED BEHAVIORAL READOUTS, HURTING TRANSLATABILITY. THE NEW SYSTEM ELIMINATES THESE CONFOUNDS BY AUTOMATING DELIVERY AND USING MACHINE LEARNING TO MEASURE BOTH HIGH-SPEED REFLEXIVE AND AFFECTIVE PAIN BEHAVIORS. THIS SYSTEM HAS ONLY BEEN VALIDATED IN INFLAMMATORY MODELS, BUT NEW TOOLS MUST DEMONSTRATE ROBUST VALIDATION ACROSS VARIOUS ESTABLISHED MODELS TO BE VIABLE, AS VALIDATION OFTEN MAKES OR BREAKS NEW RESEARCH TOOLS. THIS PROJECT WILL ADDRESS THIS CHALLENGE BY TESTING IT ACROSS THREE DIVERSE RODENT PAIN MODELS FOR NEUROPATHY, CHEMOTHERAPY, AND OSTEOARTHRITIS, COMPARING IT TO VON FREY. THIS PROJECT WILL THEN USE THE RESULTING DATA TO DETERMINE IF A NEW VERSION OF THIS AUTOMATED ANALYSIS STRATEGY, COMBINING 3D TRACKING WITH MACHINE LEARNING BEHAVIOR IDENTIFICATION, CAN OVERCOME PREVIOUS ACCURACY LIMITATIONS TO CREATE THE GROUNDWORK FOR A COMMERCIALLY VIABLE ANALYSIS SOFTWARE PRODUCT. DYING ASH TREES AND OTHER INVASIVE SPECIES DOMINATE THE ENTIRE LANDSCAPE. IN WETLAND SECTIONS, REED CANARY GRASS HAS OUTCOMPETED NATIVE SEDGES, AND IN UPLAND SECTIONS, SHADE FROM BUCKTHORN HAS PREVENTED GROWTH IN THE UNDERSTORY.EXPANDING THE HARDWOOD SWAMP PROJECT AREA WILL INCREASE HABITATS AT THE CENTER THAT SUPPORT MANY POLLINATOR SPECIES, INCLUDING RUSTY PATCHED BUMBLE BEE AND MONARCH BUTTERFLY. COASTAL PROJECT SURROGATE SPECIES, INCLUDING PINE WARBLER, WOOD THRUSH, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, AND NORTHERN FLICKER, WILL ALSO BENEFIT THROUGH THE EXPANSION OF KEY FOOD SOURCES, COVER, AND A BREEDING HABITATS. IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT TO THE PHASE 2 PROJECT AREA IS A POND PROVIDING ESSENTIAL SPRING STOPOVER HABITAT FOR BLUEWINGED TEAL, WOOD DUCK, AND MALLARD, SPECIES THAT WILL ALSO BENEFIT FROM THESE HABITAT IMPROVEMENTS.AN ADDITIONAL FOCUS OF THE PHASE 2 PROJECT IS CREATION OF HABITAT FOR NORTHERN LONG-EARED BAT, A SPECIES PREVIOUSLY IDENTIFIED AT SCHLITZ AUDUBON NATURE CENTER VIA ACOUSTIC MONITORING. LONG-TERM, BOTH PHASE 1 AND PHASE 2 OF THE HARDWOOD SWAMP RESTORATION WILL PROVIDE MATURE TREE SPECIES THAT CREATE IDEAL SITES FOR SUMMER ROOSTING. OPEN SEDGE MEADOW WILL SUPPLY PRIME FORAGING HABITAT FOR BATS, AS NATIVE INSECTS BREED IN THE SEASONALLY WET GROUND. TO PROVIDE SHORT-TERM ROOSTING HABITAT AS NEWLY PLANTED TREES CONTINUE TO GROW, 20 OF THE DYING ASH WILL BE LEFT STANDING AS SNAGS. BARK SPLITS AND CAVITIES IN THE DEAD AND DYING TREES WILL ENSURE THE AREA REMAINS SUITABLE TO BATS THROUGHOUT THE SUCCESSION PERIOD.WITH THIS HABITAT ESTABLISHED AS AN IDEAL LOCATION FOR NORTHERN LONG-EARED BATS, THE CENTER WILL CENTRALIZE ACOUSTIC BAT MONITORING EFFORTS IN THE HARDWOOD SWAMP TO PROVIDE IMPORTANT DATA ON THE PROGRESS OF THIS FOCUS SPECIES.THE SECOND PHASE OF THE SCHLITZ AUDUBON NATURE CENTER HARDWOOD SWAMP RESTORATION PROJECT WILL SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE THE CENTERS CAPABILITY TO SUPPORT WILDLIFE BY FURTHER INCREASING ECOSYSTEM DIVERSITY, FUNCTION, AND PRODUCTIVITY. RESTORING A HARDWOOD SWAMP HABITAT WILL ENCOURAGE NATURAL, SELF-SUSTAINING POPULATIONS OF ENDANGERED AND FOCAL SPECIES, AND PROVIDE FOOD, COVER, AND BREEDING HABITAT FOR MIGRATORY BIRDS. THE PRODUCT TO BE COMMERCIALIZED WILL CONTRIBUTE TO DEVELOPING INNOVATION AROUND IMMERSIVE TELEHEALTH EXPERIENCES, EXPLORING THE FUTURE OF WORK FOR PHYSICAL REHABILITATION IN THE METAVERSE, ESTABLISHING STANDARDS IN EMBODIED TELEHEALTH, AND GROUNDING NOVEL SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH METHODS WITHIN VR FOR HEALTHCARE FROM A CALIFORNIA-BASED STARTUP WITH THE GOAL OF INCREASING ACCESS TO CARE. ESTABLISHING A REMOTE IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL PLATFORM WILL PROVIDE A MEANS FOR IN-PATIENT SUCCESS METRICS AND FULL-BODY VIRTUAL GUIDANCE. PATIENT THROUGHPUT POTENTIALLY COULD BE DOUBLED THROUGH REMOTE VISITS IN VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS AND AUTOMATED PHYSICAL HEALTH DOCUMENTATION. THE PLATFORM WILL BE DESIGNED WITH ACCESSIBILITY IN MIND WITH PATIENTS FROM MEDICAL DESERTS, WHERE PATIENT CARE IS SIGNIFICANTLY LIMITED BY HOSPITAL CAPACITY, PHYSICAL DISTANCE, DOCTORS PER POPULATION, AND COST. REMOTE PHYSICAL REHABILITATION TOOLS AND PREDICTIVE PHYSICAL THERAPY ANALYTICS WILL BENEFIT PATIENTS WITHOUT ADEQUATE INSURANCE COVERAGE. THIS TECHNOLOGY COULD LOWER HOSPITAL VISITS, ENABLE CLINICS TO REMAIN OPEN DURING FUTURE PANDEMIC PERIODS, DECREASE COSTS FOR PATIENTS AND CLINICS ALIKE, AND BEGIN DETECTING PHYSICAL HEALTH NEEDS EARLIER TO HELP MANAGE THE PACE OF RECOVERY. THE PROPOSED PROJECT AIMS TO EXPAND A NOVEL PHYSICAL REHABILITATION TELEHEALTH SOLUTION THROUGH THE CONTINUED RESEARCH OF AN INSTRUMENTED AND GAMIFIED IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL REALITY PLATFORM FOR PHYSICAL THERAPY AND HEALTHCARE MONITORING. THIS TECHNOLOGY ADDRESSES THE SHORTCOMINGS OF WIDELY USED TELEHEALTH PLATFORMS (OFTEN VIDEOCONFERENCING) WHERE THERAPISTS FIND IT DIFFICULT TO PERFORM COMMON EVALUATIONS SUCH AS MOVEMENT ABILITIES AND BALANCE COORDINATION TESTS. THE SOLUTION WILL EXPAND UPON AN EMBODIED TELEHEALTH PLATFORM WITH 3D VIRTUAL AVATARS AND PREDICTIVE AI TOOLS TO ASSESS USER BIOMECHANICS IN REAL-TIME EXTENDING TO FULL-BODY ASSESSMENT WHILE PROVIDING NORMATIVE ASSESSMENT METRICS, CREATING A GOAL STANDARD FOR REMOTE PHYSICAL THERAPY CARE. THE DEVELOPMENT METHOD WILL CONTINUE TO UTILIZE USER-CENTERED DESIGN WITH A PANEL OF THERAPISTS TO ENSURE ACCESSIBILITY AND USABILITY OF THE PROTOTYPE SYSTEMS BY THEIR RELEVANT STAKEHOLDERS. SUCH RESEARCH WILL INCORPORATE PREDICTIVE BIOMECHANICAL ANALYSIS TO INCREASE THE RELIABILITY AND REPEATABILITY OF PHYSICAL THERAPY MEASURES AND EXERCISE PROGRAMS FOR REMOTE MONITORING AT THE CLINIC OR THE PATIENT?S HOME. ITERATIVE PROTOTYPING WITH USER EXPERIENCE WILL BE CONDUCTED TO ESTABLISH IN-PATIENT SUCCESS METRICS AND FULL-BODY VIRTUAL ASSESSMENT. THIS INNOVATION WILL ENABLE GREATER AFFORDABILITY, USABILITY, AND EFFECTIVENESS OF PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR PATIENTS AND THERAPISTS. THE SYSTEM THAT RESULTS FROM THIS PROJECT MAY REDUCE THE TIME NECESSARY FOR EXPERIMENT COMPLETION BY 50% AND TRAINING OF RESEARCHERS FROM 5-6 MONTHS TO 1 HOUR, AND REDUCE WASTE BY PRODUCING CLEANER DATA FASTER, SAVING MONEY, AND ASSISTING IN RESEARCH ANIMAL USE REDUCTION EFFORTS. THE COMPLETE AUTOMATION OF THE SYSTEM?S OPERATION COULD FURTHER BENEFIT THE ~$3.3B GLOBAL PRECLINICAL PAIN RESEARCH MARKET WHILE IMPROVING THE TRANSLATIONAL VIABILITY BY GENERATING CLEANER DATA, MEASURING PAIN, AND NOT JUST STIMULUS SENSITIVITY. BY YEAR 3 OF PRODUCTION POST-AWARD, $1.85 MILLION IN REVENUE IS EXPECTED FROM HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE PRODUCTS. IN ADDITION, THIS SYSTEM LOWERS THE IMPEDIMENTS AND REDUCES INJURY POTENTIAL FOR RESEARCHERS WHO TRADITIONALLY COULD NOT PERFORM PAIN BEHAVIOR ASSAYS DUE TO THEIR HIGH TRAINING REQUIREMENTS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING NATURE. THIS IS EXPECTED TO BENEFIT TRAINEES, SPUR INNOVATION BY ALLOWING NEW LABS TO EASILY ACCESS THESE ASSAYS. THE PROPOSED PROJECT AIMS TO ASSESS THE COMMERCIAL FEASIBILITY OF A NEW BEHAVIOR TESTING AND ANALYSIS SYSTEM FOR USE IN PRECLINICAL PAIN RESEARCH. PRECLINICAL RODENT PAIN RESEARCH IS A KEY PART OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW PAIN-RELIEVING THERAPIES FOR THE 20% OF US ADULTS CURRENTLY LIVING WITH UNDERTREATED CHRONIC PAIN. UNFORTUNATELY, THE CURRENT GOLD STANDARD OF VON FREY TESTING HAS SIGNIFICANT CONFOUNDS DUE TO MANUAL AIMING AND STIMULUS DELIVERY AND SUFFERS FROM LIMITED BEHAVIORAL READOUTS, HURTING TRANSLATABILITY. THE NEW SYSTEM ELIMINATES THESE CONFOUNDS BY AUTOMATING DELIVERY AND USING MACHINE LEARNING TO MEASURE BOTH HIGH-SPEED REFLEXIVE AND AFFECTIVE PAIN BEHAVIORS. THIS SYSTEM HAS ONLY BEEN VALIDATED IN INFLAMMATORY MODELS, BUT NEW TOOLS MUST DEMONSTRATE ROBUST VALIDATION ACROSS VARIOUS ESTABLISHED MODELS TO BE VIABLE, AS VALIDATION OFTEN MAKES OR BREAKS NEW RESEARCH TOOLS. THIS PROJECT WILL ADDRESS THIS CHALLENGE BY TESTING IT ACROSS THREE DIVERSE RODENT PAIN MODELS FOR NEUROPATHY, CHEMOTHERAPY, AND OSTEOARTHRITIS, COMPARING IT TO VON FREY. THIS PROJECT WILL THEN USE THE RESULTING DATA TO DETERMINE IF A NEW VERSION OF THIS AUTOMATED ANALYSIS STRATEGY, COMBINING 3D TRACKING WITH MACHINE LEARNING BEHAVIOR IDENTIFICATION, CAN OVERCOME PREVIOUS ACCURACY LIMITATIONS TO CREATE THE GROUNDWORK FOR A COMMERCIALLY VIABLE ANALYSIS SOFTWARE PRODUCT. DURING PHASE 1, CENTER STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS RESTORED A FORMERLY DEGRADED AREA TO AN ECOLOGICALLY SIGNIFICANT HARDWOOD SWAMP AND ASSOCIATED SOUTHERN WET HARDWOOD FOREST HABITAT, THROUGH INVASIVE SPECIES CONTROL AND SITE PREPARATION WORK FOLLOWED BY PLANTING OF 725 TREES, 250 SHRUBS, AND 24,000 HERBACEOUS PLUGS.EXPANSION OF THE HARDWOOD SWAMP RESTORATION EFFORT IS A KEY PART OF THE SCHLITZ AUDUBON CONSERVATION PLAN, AND WILL BE ACHIEVED BY: PLANTING 350 TREES THAT ARE WELL ADAPTED TO THE SITE AND TRADITIONALLY FOUND IN HARDWOOD SWAMPS, SUCH AS SWAMP WHITE OAK, BUR OAK, HACKBERRY, AND AMERICAN SYCAMORE PLANTING 125 SHRUBS, INCLUDING SILKY DOGWOOD, WINTERBERRY, ELDERBERRY, AND NANNYBERRY, THAT WILL GIVE THE DESIRED 10 SHRUB COVER THAT IS TYPICAL OF HARDWOOD SWAMPS PLANTING 15,000 HERBACEOUS PLUGS, INCLUDING A WIDE VARIETY OF SPECIES THAT WILL PROVIDE CONTINUOUS FLOWERING THROUGHOUT THE GROWING SEASON, AND SPREADING TWO POUNDS OF SEDGE MEADOW SEED MIX THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT AREA TO SUPPLEMENT THE HERBACEOUS PLUGS AND ADD TO THE OVERALL DIVERSITY.ADJACENT TO AND IMMEDIATELY WEST OF THE ORIGINAL PHASE 1 RESTORATION SITE, THE PHASE 2 PROJECT SITE IS ALSO A SEVERELY DEGRADED AREA THAT DOES NOT REACH ITS SIGNIFICANT ECOLOGICAL OR EDUCATIONAL POTENTIAL. DYING ASH TREES AND OTHER INVASIVE SPECIES DOMINATE THE ENTIRE LANDSCAPE. IN WETLAND SECTIONS, REED CANARY GRASS HAS OUTCOMPETED NATIVE SEDGES, AND IN UPLAND SECTIONS, SHADE FROM BUCKTHORN HAS PREVENTED GROWTH IN THE UNDERSTORY.EXPANDING THE HARDWOOD SWAMP PROJECT AREA WILL INCREASE HABITATS AT THE CENTER THAT SUPPORT MANY POLLINATOR SPECIES, INCLUDING RUSTY PATCHED BUMBLE BEE AND MONARCH BUTTERFLY. COASTAL PROJECT SURROGATE SPECIES, INCLUDING PINE WARBLER, WOOD THRUSH, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, AND NORTHERN FLICKER, WILL ALSO BENEFIT THROUGH THE EXPANSION OF KEY FOOD SOURCES, COVER, AND A BREEDING HABITATS. IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT TO THE PHASE 2 PROJECT AREA IS A POND PROVIDING ESSENTIAL SPRING STOPOVER HABITAT FOR BLUEWINGED TEAL, WOOD DUCK, AND MALLARD, SPECIES THAT WILL ALSO BENEFIT FROM THESE HABITAT IMPROVEMENTS.AN ADDITIONAL FOCUS OF THE PHASE 2 PROJECT IS CREATION OF HABITAT FOR NORTHERN LONG-EARED BAT, A SPECIES PREVIOUSLY IDENTIFIED AT SCHLITZ AUDUBON NATURE CENTER VIA ACOUSTIC MONITORING. LONG-TERM, BOTH PHASE 1 AND PHASE 2 OF THE HARDWOOD SWAMP RESTORATION WILL PROVIDE MATURE TREE SPECIES THAT CREATE IDEAL SITES FOR SUMMER ROOSTING. OPEN SEDGE MEADOW WILL SUPPLY PRIME FORAGING HABITAT FOR BATS, AS NATIVE INSECTS BREED IN THE SEASONALLY WET GROUND. TO PROVIDE SHORT-TERM ROOSTING HABITAT AS NEWLY PLANTED TREES CONTINUE TO GROW, 20 OF THE DYING ASH WILL BE LEFT STANDING AS SNAGS. BARK SPLITS AND CAVITIES IN THE DEAD AND DYING TREES WILL ENSURE THE AREA REMAINS SUITABLE TO BATS THROUGHOUT THE SUCCESSION PERIOD.WITH THIS HABITAT ESTABLISHED AS AN IDEAL LOCATION FOR NORTHERN LONG-EARED BATS, THE CENTER WILL CENTRALIZE ACOUSTIC BAT MONITORING EFFORTS IN THE HARDWOOD SWAMP TO PROVIDE IMPORTANT DATA ON THE PROGRESS OF THIS FOCUS SPECIES.THE SECOND PHASE OF THE SCHLITZ AUDUBON NATURE CENTER HARDWOOD SWAMP RESTORATION PROJECT WILL SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE THE CENTERS CAPABILITY TO SUPPORT WILDLIFE BY FURTHER INCREASING ECOSYSTEM DIVERSITY, FUNCTION, AND PRODUCTIVITY. RESTORING A HARDWOOD SWAMP HABITAT WILL ENCOURAGE NATURAL, SELF-SUSTAINING POPULATIONS OF ENDANGERED AND FOCAL SPECIES, AND PROVIDE FOOD, COVER, AND BREEDING HABITAT FOR MIGRATORY BIRDS. THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO ACT AS AN EASILY ACCESSIBLE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUTH AND VISITORS OF ALL AGES WITHIN THE MIDWEST REGION COASTAL PROGRAM URBAN OPPORTUNITY AREA.
