S-STEM VERTICAL MENTORING LEARNING COMMUNITY -THIS PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE NATIONAL NEED FOR WELL-EDUCATED SCIENTISTS, MATHEMATICIANS, ENGINEERS, AND TECHNICIANS BY SUPPORTING THE RETENTION AND GRADUATION OF HIGH-ACHIEVING, LOW-INCOME STUDENT WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SAN MARCOS. A TOTAL OF 21 SCHOLARS PURSUING A BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN CHEMISTRY OR BIOCHEMISTRY WILL RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS AVERAGING $15,000 PER YEAR FOR UP TO FIVE YEARS. SCHOLARS WILL RECEIVE FACULTY AND PEER MENTORING, AND THE PROJECT WILL BUILD STRONG SCHOLAR COHORTS THROUGH A VERTICAL MENTORING LEARNING COMMUNITY (VMLC) THAT INTEGRATES BLOCK-ENROLLED COURSES, HIGH-IMPACT PRACTICES, AND MATCHED PROFESSIONAL MENTORING. ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR SCHOLARS WILL INCLUDE STRUCTURED ACADEMIC SUPPORT, UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH ENGAGEMENT, AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS TRACK 2 SCHOLARSHIPS IN STEM PROJECT IS TO INCREASE STEM DEGREE COMPLETION OF ACADEMICALLY TALENTED, LOW-INCOME UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED. THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT NATIONAL NEED TO GROW THE STEM WORKFORCE AND NURTURE KEY TALENT THAT WILL ENSURE ECONOMIC COMPETITIVENESS AND PROVIDE DOMESTIC LEADERSHIP ACROSS CRITICAL SECTORS. THIS PROJECT DIRECTLY SPEAKS TO THIS NEED BY SUPPORTING STEM STUDENT SUCCESS, WHICH WILL STRENGTHEN THE WORKFORCE IN CHEMISTRY, BIOCHEMISTRY, BIOTECHNOLOGY, AND OTHER KEY AREAS OF NEED. THE PROJECT WILL BE ASSESSED BY AN EXPERIENCED EVALUATOR THAT WILL CONDUCT ANNUAL FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE EVALUATIONS, INCLUDING STUDENT AND MENTOR INTERVIEWS AND FOCUS GROUPS TO ASSESS PROGRAM IMPACT, RETENTION, AND ACADEMIC PROGRESS. THE DATA GENERATED WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE KNOWLEDGE BASE REGARDING EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT TALENTED, LOW-INCOME STUDENTS IN STEM. THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY NSF'S SCHOLARSHIPS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS PROGRAM, WHICH SEEKS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF ACADEMICALLY TALENTED, LOW-INCOME STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED WHO EARN DEGREES IN STEM FIELDS. IT ALSO AIMS TO IMPROVE THE EDUCATION OF FUTURE STEM WORKERS, AND TO GENERATE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ACADEMIC SUCCESS, RETENTION, TRANSFER, GRADUATION, AND ACADEMIC/CAREER PATHWAYS OF LOW-INCOME STUDENTS. BRIDGES TO THE DOCTORATE RESEARCH TRAINING PROGRAM AT CSU SAN MARCOS WITH UCSD AND TSRI - PROJECT SUMMARY AS A YOUNG, RAPIDLY GROWING CAMPUS IN NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SAN MARCOS (CSUSM) IS WELL-POSITIONED TO PREPARE MOTIVATED STUDENTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED (UR) GROUPS FOR GRADUATE STUDIES AND RESEARCH CAREERS. A LARGE PROPORTION OF CSUSM STUDENTS IS HISPANIC (47%), WHICH EXCEEDS THE NON-HISPANIC WHITE POPULATION (27%). THE CAMPUS IS A HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTION (HSI). IN ADDITION, 54% ARE FROM FAMILIES IN WHICH THEY WILL BE THE FIRST TO COMPLETE A COLLEGE DEGREE AND 52% ARE PELL GRANT RECIPIENTS. THUS, CSUSM IS HOME TO A RAPIDLY GROWING DIVERSE STUDENT BODY, MANY OF WHOM ARE LOW INCOME AND/OR THE FIRST IN THEIR FAMILY TO ATTEND COLLEGE. THE BRIDGES TO THE DOCTORATE RESEARCH TRAINING PROGRAM AT CSU SAN MARCOS WITH UCSD AND TSRI (B2PHD) HAS BEEN SPECIFICALLY DEVELOPED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENT POPULATION AT CSUSM. THE PROGRAM WILL USE EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES TO ACHIEVE THE FOLLOWING 8 OBJECTIVES: 1) PREPARE, RECRUIT AND SELECT SCHOLARS WHO SHOW SIGNIFICANT PROMISE FOR SUCCESS, 2) ENHANCE QUANTITATIVE AND METHODOLOGICAL SKILLS, 3) ENHANCE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION SKILLS, 4) ENGAGE STUDENTS IN MEANINGFUL BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH THAT RESULTS IN THESIS AND PUBLICATION(S), 5) DEVELOP KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PERSISTENCE NECESSARY TO SUCCEEDIN A DOCTORAL PROGRAM AND BEYOND, 6) EXPOSE STUDENTS TO A CULTURALLY VALIDATED PEDAGOGY TO INCREASE BELONGING AND PERSISTENCE, 7) TO PREPARE COMPETITIVE APPLICATIONS FOR GRADUATE SCHOOL, AND 8) REDUCE TIME TO DEGREE IN BOTH MASTER’S AND PHD SETTINGS. THE PROGRAM IS TWO YEARS IN LENGTH. WE PROPOSE TO ENGAGE 8 MASTER’S STUDENTS IN YEAR 1 OF THE PROGRAM, AND 16 IN YEARS 2-5. OUR MAJOR GOALS, INFORMED BY PAST SUCCESS RATES, ARE FOR 90% OF CSUSM B2PHD SCHOLARS TO GRADUATE WITH THEIR MASTER’S DEGREE AND 70% TO ENTER PHD PROGRAMS. TAKEN AS A WHOLE, THE B2PHD PROGRAM, IN CONCERT WITH A HIGHLY SUPPORTIVE CAMPUS ENVIRONMENT, WILL PREPARE STUDENTS FROM UR GROUPS TO BE THOUGHTFUL SCIENTISTS WHO HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, RESEARCH EXPERIENCE AND CHARACTER THAT PREPARE THEM FOR DOCTORAL STUDIES IN THE BIOMEDICAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES AND THAT ALLOW THEM TO BECOME FUTURE LEADERS IN SCIENCE AND ACADEMIA. BY DOING THIS WE WILL HELP ADVANCE THE GOALS OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH TO DIVERSIFY THE RESEARCH WORKFORCE. A MORE DIVERSE RESEARCH WORKFORCE WILL BETTER ADDRESS THE RESEARCH NEEDS OF A DIVERSE NATION AND THEREBY CONTRIBUTE TO BETTER HEALTH FOR ALL.

THE EXPANSION OF A MOBILE MAKING PROJECT THAT ENGAGES UNDERSERVED YOUTH ACROSS CALIFORNIA IN STEM -THIS PROJECT IS EXPANDING AN EFFECTIVE MOBILE MAKING PROGRAM TO ACHIEVE SUSTAINABLE, WIDESPREAD IMPACT AMONG UNDERSERVED YOUTH. MAKING IS A DESIGN-BASED, PARTICIPANT-DRIVEN ENDEAVOR THAT IS BASED ON A LEARNING BY DOING PEDAGOGY. FOR NEARLY A DECADE, CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SAN MARCOS HAS OPERATED OUT-OF-SCHOOL MAKING PROGRAMS FOR BRINGING BOTH EQUIPMENT AND UNIVERSITY STUDENT FACILITATORS TO THE SITES IN UNDER-SERVED COMMUNITIES. IN COLLABORATION WITH FOUR OTHER CSU CAMPUSES, THIS PROJECT WILL EXPAND ALONG FOUR DIMENSIONS: (A) ADDING COMMUNITY SITES IN ADDITION TO SCHOOL SITES (B) ADDING RURAL CONTEXTS IN ADDITION TO URBAN/SUBURBAN, (C) ADDING HYBRID AND ONLINE OPTIONS IN ADDITION TO IN-PERSON), AND (D) INCLUDING FUTURE TEACHERS AS FACILITATORS IN ADDITION TO STEM UNDERGRADUATES. THE PROGRAM USES DESIGN THINKING AS A FRAMEWORK TO ENGAGE PARTICIPANTS IN ADDRESSING REAL-WORLD PROBLEMS THAT ARE PERSONALLY AND SOCIALLY MEANINGFUL. PARTICIPANTS WILL USE LOW- AND HIGH-TECH TOOLS, SUCH AS CIRCUITY, CODING, AND ROBOTICS TO ENGAGE IN ACTIVITIES THAT RESPOND TO DESIGN CHALLENGES. A DIVERSE GROUP OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WILL LEAD WEEKLY, 90-MINUTE ACTIVITIES AND SERVE AS NEAR-PEER MENTORS, PROVIDING A CONNECTION TO THE UNIVERSITY FOR THE YOUTH PARTICIPANTS, MANY OF WHOM WILL BE FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS. THE PROJECT WILL SIGNIFICANTLY EXPAND THE MOBILE MAKING PROGRAM FROM 12 SITES IN NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY TO 48 SITES ACROSS CALIFORNIA, WITH NEARLY 2,000 UNIVERSITY FACILITATORS PROVIDING 12 HOURS OF PROGRAMMING EACH YEAR TO OVER 10,000 UNDERSERVED YOUTH (GRADES 4TH THROUGH 8TH) DURING THE FIVE-YEAR TIMELINE. THE PROJECT RESEARCH WILL EXAMINE WHETHER THE ADDITIONAL SITES AND PROGRAM VARIATIONS RESULT IN POSITIVE YOUTH AND UNIVERSITY STUDENT OUTCOMES. FOR YOUTH IN GRADES 4 THROUGH 8, THE PROJECT WILL EVALUATE IMPACTS INCLUDING SUSTAINED INTEREST IN MAKING AND STEM, INCREASED SELF-EFFICACY IN MAKING AND STEM, AND A GREATER SENSE THAT MAKING AND STEM ARE RELEVANT TO THEIR LIVES. FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENT FACILITATORS, THE PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE IMPACTS INCLUDING BROADENED TECHNICAL SKILLS, INCREASED LEADERSHIP AND 21ST CENTURY SKILLS, AND INCREASED LIFELONG INTEREST IN STEM OUTREACH/INFORMAL SCIENCE EDUCATION. MULTIPLE SOURCES OF DATA WILL BE USED TO RESEARCH THE EXPANDED MOBILE MAKING PROGRAM'S IMPACT ON YOUTH AND UNDERGRADUATE PARTICIPANTS, COMPARE IMPLEMENTATION SITES, AND UNDERSTAND THE PROGRAM'S EFFICACY WHEN ACROSS DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES WITH DIVERSE LEARNER POPULATIONS. A MIXED METHODS APPROACH THAT LEVERAGES EXTANT DATA (ATTENDANCE NUMBERS, STUDENT ARTIFACTS), SURVEYS, FOCUS GROUPS, MAKING SESSION FEEDBACK FORMS, OBSERVATIONS, AND FIELD NOTES WILL TOGETHER BE USED TO ASSESS YOUTH AND UNIVERSITY STUDENT PARTICIPANT OUTCOMES. THE PROJECT WILL DISAGGREGATE DATA BASED ON GENDER, RACE/ETHNICITY, GRADE LEVEL, AND SITE TO UNDERSTAND THE MOBILE MAKING PROGRAM'S IMPACT ON YOUTH PARTICIPANTS AT MULTIPLE LEVELS ACROSS CONTEXTS. THE PROJECT WILL FURTHER COMPARE FINDINGS FROM DIFFERENT TYPES OF IMPLEMENTATION SITES (E.G., SCHOOL VS. LIBRARY), LEARNER GROUPS, (E.G., MIDDLE VS. UPPER ELEMENTARY STUDENTS), AND FACILITATOR GROUPS (E.G., STEM MAJORS VS. FUTURE TEACHERS). THIS WILL ENABLE THE PROJECT TO CONDUCT CROSS-CASE COMPARISONS BETWEEN CSU CAMPUSES. PROJECT RESEARCH WILL ALSO COMPARE FINDINGS FROM URBAN AND RURAL SCHOOL SITES AS WELL AS BASED ON THE MODALITY OF TEACHING AND LEARNING (E.G., IN-PERSON VS. ONLINE). THE MOBILE MAKING PROGRAM ACTIVITIES, PROJECT RESEARCH, AND A TOOLKIT FOR IMPLEMENTING A MOBILE MAKER PROGRAM WILL BE WIDELY DISSEMINATED TO RESEARCHERS, EDUCATORS, AND OUT-OF-SCHOOL PROGRAMS. THE BUILDING EARLY AWARENESS AND RESEARCH IN SCIENCE (BEARS) AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SAN MARCOS, A NIBIB ESTEEMED PROGRAM, WILL SUPPORT 15 TALENTED UR UNDERGRADUATES INTERESTED IN BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES FROM MATRICULATION THROUGH ACCEPTANCE INTO AN ADVANCED HONORS PROGRAM; THE ULTIMATE GOAL IS FOR THEM TO COMPLETE THEIR B.S. DEGREES, OBTAIN ADMISSION TO PH.D. OR M.D./PH.D. PROGRAMS, AND INCREASE THE NUMBER OF UNDERREPRESENTED BIOMEDICAL SCIENTISTS IN THE NATION’S WORKFORCE. THE THREE PRIMARY GOALS OF THE PROGRAM ARE TO 1) EMPOWER BEARS SCHOLARS TO ACCUMULATE PERSONAL, ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH SKILLS NECESSARY TO PERSIST AND COMPLETE THEIR B.S. DEGREE PROGRAM, ENTER AN ADVANCED HONORS PROGRAM IN THEIR JUNIOR YEAR, AND APPLY TO GRADUATE SCHOOL IN THE BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES; 2) PROVIDE A COMPREHENSIVE MENTORING TEAM THAT SUPPORTS THE ACADEMIC, RESEARCH, CAREER, AND PERSONAL/SOCIAL/PEER NEEDS OF THE SCHOLARS DURING THEIR CRITICAL FIRST FEW YEARS; AND 3) TRAIN BEARS SCHOLARS TO BE STEM AMBASSADORS TO AID IN DIVERSITY RECRUITMENT, PROMOTE LOCAL AWARENESS OF BIOMEDICAL AND BIOENGINEERING CAREERS, AND DEVELOP LEADERSHIP SKILLS. OVER THREE SUMMERS AND TWO ACADEMIC YEARS, THE BEARS PROGRAM COMBINES A VARIETY OF NEW WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS WITH LEVERAGED CAMPUS OPPORTUNITIES TO ADDRESS SEVERAL SPECIFIC AIMS INCLUDING: A) STRENGTHEN THEIR COLLEGE SURVIVAL SKILLS, AND QUANTITATIVE AND COMPUTATIONAL COMPETENCE (Q&C) IN CORE SCIENCES BY PARTICIPATING IN AN EARLY SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM AND A SERIES OF INCREASINGLY CHALLENGING Q&C WORKSHOPS; B) BUILD THEIR CONFIDENCE, IDENTITY, AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS AS SCIENTISTS BY PARTICIPATING IN INCLUSIVITY WORKSHOPS, PRESENTING THEIR RESEARCH FINDINGS, AND MAKING PRESENTATIONS TO HIGH SCHOOLS AND THE PUBLIC; C) FOSTER THEIR PASSION AND INTEREST IN BIOMEDICAL AND BIOENGINEERING CAREERS BY PARTICIPATING IN RESEARCH TRAININGS, ACTIVITIES, AND CONDUCTING INDEPENDENT RESEARCH AT CSUSM AND WITH PARTNER FACULTY AT UCSD IN THE ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY AND BIOENGINEERING DEPARTMENTS. BEARS SCHOLARS WILL THEN ENTER ONE OF OUR MANY EXISTING AND HIGH SUCCESSFUL ADVANCED HONORS PROGRAMS (U- RISE, MCNAIR, LSAMP) IN WHICH THEY WILL RECEIVE COMPREHENSIVE LONGITUDINAL FACULTY, GRANTSMANSHIP TRAINING, RESEARCH AND PEER MENTORSHIP WHICH WILL HELP THEM CONTINUE THEIR CAREERS INTO GRADUATE SCHOOLS AND THE BIOMEDICAL WORKFORCE. ULTIMATELY, THE BEARS PROGRAM WILL HELP DECREASE THE NATIONWIDE DIVERSITY GAP IN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH AND HELP TALENTED UR STUDENTS BECOME THOUGHTFUL SCHOLARS OF SCIENCE.

THE NCSD B2B PROGRAM CONTINUES A 20-YEAR SUCCESSFUL B2B CONSORTIUM OF THE PARTNER INSTITUTIONS OF CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SAN MARCOS (CSUSM), PALOMAR COLLEGE AND MIRACOSTA COLLEGE. THIS NEW B2B PROGRAM WILL FOCUS ON THE ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT AND SEAMLESS TRANSFER OF PALOMAR AND MIRACOSTA UR COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS TO CSUSM OR OTHER 4-YEAR INSTITUTIONS. THE NCSD B2B PROGRAM TARGETS UR STUDENTS EARLY IN THEIR COMMUNITY COLLEGE ATTENDANCE TO ENROLL THEM IN AN UP TO TWO-YEAR STRUCTURED ACADEMIC, RESEARCH, AND CAREER AWARENESS AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. BY TARGETING UR STUDENTS EARLY IN THEIR SCHOOLING, A KNOWN HIGH DROPOUT PERIOD, THE PROGRAM HELPS PREPARE THEM ACADEMICALLY, CREATES INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT PLANS FOR SUCCESSFUL TRANSFERRING, HELPS FOSTER THEIR SCIENCE IDENTITIES THROUGH PEER-MENTORING AND TRAINING IN RIGOROUS AND REPRODUCIBLE RESEARCH PRACTICES. THE SPECIFIC AIMS OF THE NCSD B2B PROGRAM ARE TO: 1) ATTRACT A LARGE POOL OF PROMISING UNDERREPRESENTED SCIENCE MAJORS FOR THE BRIDGES PROGRAM THROUGH BROAD AND PROACTIVE DIVERSITY RECRUITMENT ACTIVITIES; 2) EMPOWER BRIDGES SCHOLARS TO ACCUMULATE ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS AND PROFESSIONAL SKILLS NECESSARY TO PURSUE BACHELOR’S DEGREES AND CAREERS IN THE BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES THROUGH NEWLY DESIGNED CURRICULUM, SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION, ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND SKILL WORKSHOPS; 3) ENGAGE BRIDGES SCHOLARS IN MEANINGFUL BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH AND CAREER EXPERIENCES INCLUDING EXPOSURE TO THE DIVERSITY OF BIOMEDICAL FIELDS, PLACEMENT IN FACULTY RESEARCH LABS (OFTEN WITH UR PEERS OR BRIDGES ALUMNI), ATTENDANCE OF RESEARCH SEMINARS, AND CONFERENCES; 4) EXPOSE STUDENTS TO A CULTURALLY VALIDATED PEDAGOGY TO INCREASE BELONGING AND PERSISTENCE THROUGH SEMINARS, WORKSHOPS AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES; 5) PARTICIPATE IN SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAM TO ENHANCE RESEARCH AND QUANTITATIVE SKILLS DURING A SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCE AND WORKSHOPS; AND 6) ENSURE EFFICIENT TRANSFER OF BRIDGES SCHOLARS TO 4-YEAR INSTITUTIONS AND ULTIMATELY COMPLETION OF A BACHELOR’S DEGREE THROUGH FREQUENT AND LONG-TERM MENTORING, AND CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES. OVER THE LAST 15 YEARS, OF THE 226 STUDENTS WHO COMPLETED THE CSUSM BRIDGES PROGRAM, 211 HAVE TRANSFERRED TO 4-YEAR INSTITUTIONS (93%), AND 204 (90%) HAVE OR ARE ON TRACK TO OBTAIN THEIR BACHELOR’S DEGREE (145 COMPLETED, 59 IN PROGRESS). IN ADDITION, 49 (22%) ARE IN PROGRESS OR HAVE COMPLETED A PH.D., M.D. OR D.O. PROGRAM (16 COMPLETE, 33 IN PROGRESS). THE NCSD B2B PROGRAM WILL CONTINUE THIS SUCCESSFUL HISTORY OF PREPARING HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED PERSONS WITH THE NECESSARY EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND MINDSET TO PURSUE BIOMEDICAL HIGHER DEGREE PROGRAMS AND RESEARCH CAREERS.

OPTIMIZING THE STEM TEACHER RECRUITMENT, DEVELOPMENT AND RETENTION PATHWAY: ALIGNING STEM AND TEACHING IDENTITIES -THE PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL NEED OF RECRUITING, PREPARING, AND RETAINING HIGH-QUALITY TEACHERS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) AREAS. THE SHORTAGE OF STEM TEACHERS IS A NATIONAL CONCERN. WITH A GROWING NEED FOR A SPECIALIZED STEM-FOCUSED WORKFORCE, HIGH-QUALITY STEM TEACHERS CAN PREPARE STUDENTS FOR STEM CAREERS, EXPAND ACCESS TO STEM EDUCATION, AND CREATE A MORE INCLUSIVE AND EQUITABLE WORKFORCE. TO HELP ADDRESS THE SHORTFALL OF STEM TEACHERS, THE PROJECT WILL ENCOURAGE QUALIFIED MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AND GRADUATES TO PURSUE TEACHING CAREERS AT HIGH SCHOOLS AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS. THE PROJECT WILL SUPPORT 30 PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS THROUGH SCHOLARSHIPS, EARLY TEACHING EXPERIENCES, MENTORING, AND TEACHER PREPARATION. ONCE THEY HAVE OBTAINED A TEACHING CREDENTIAL AND START TEACHING AS NOVICE TEACHERS, THE PROJECT CONTINUES TO PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN THEIR FIRST TWO YEARS OF TEACHING. DURING THIS TIME, STEM AND EDUCATION PROFESSORS AND EXPERIENCED TEACHERS WILL MENTOR THESE NEW TEACHERS AND HELP THEM REFINE TEACHING SKILLS AND STAY IN THE TEACHING PROFESSION. THE PROJECT AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SAN MARCOS INCLUDES PARTNERSHIPS WITH THREE COMMUNITY COLLEGES (MIRACOSTA, PALOMAR, AND SAN DIEGO MESA) AND TWO HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS (ESCONDIDO UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT AND SAN MARCOS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT). PROJECT GOALS ARE TO (1) RECRUIT AND RETAIN 30 HIGH-QUALITY STEM MAJORS AND PROFESSIONALS TO TEACHING CAREERS OVER FIVE YEARS; (2) RECRUIT AT LEAST 50% UNDERREPRESENTED RACIAL MINORITIES AND WOMEN IN STEM; (3) EXPAND AND SUSTAIN RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION MECHANISMS FROM FRESHMAN TO TEACHER INDUCTION; AND (4) EXPAND AND SUSTAIN THE STEM EDUCATION COMMUNITY IN THE REGION. THE THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK IS BASED ON WENGER?S (1998) THEORY OF SOCIAL PARTICIPATION AND IDENTITY IN A COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE. A KEY FEATURE OF THE PROJECT IS TO SUPPORT PARTICIPANTS AS THEY DEVELOP THEIR IDENTITIES TO INCLUDE CHARACTERISTICS OF BOTH SCIENTISTS AND STEM TEACHERS. THE PROJECT?S INTELLECTUAL MERIT INCLUDES A REFINED MODEL FOR ENHANCING CROSS-DISCIPLINARY AND CROSS-COLLEGE FACULTY?S ABILITY TO RECRUIT AND PRODUCE HIGH-QUALITY STEM TEACHERS AND A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW STUDENTS FIND BALANCE BETWEEN THEIR STEM AND TEACHING IDENTITIES. THE BROADER IMPACTS OF THIS PROJECT WILL AID THE TEACHER SHORTAGE AND INCREASE ROLE MODELS FOR CALIFORNIA?S DIVERSE K-12 STUDENTS. THE MODELS FOR FACULTY TEAMWORK AND COLLABORATION WITH COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO SUPPORT STEM TEACHER RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION CAN PROVIDE INSIGHTS FOR OTHER INSTITUTIONS AS RESULTS ARE DISSEMINATED. THIS TRACK 1: SCHOLARSHIPS AND STIPENDS PROJECT IS SUPPORTED THROUGH THE ROBERT NOYCE TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (NOYCE). THE NOYCE PROGRAM SUPPORTS TALENTED STEM UNDERGRADUATE MAJORS AND PROFESSIONALS TO BECOME EFFECTIVE K-12 STEM TEACHERS AND EXPERIENCED, EXEMPLARY K-12 TEACHERS TO BECOME STEM MASTER TEACHERS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS. THE MISSION OF THIS SEPA GRANT AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SAN MARCOS (CSUSM) IS TO FOSTER THOUGHTFUL AMERICAN INDIAN SCHOLARS OF SCIENCE BY ENGAGING MOTIVATED AMERICAN INDIAN YOUTH AND THEIR FAMILIES IN A CULTURALLY VALIDATED, COMPREHENSIVE AND LAYERED SCIENCE EDUCATION, MENTORING, AND RESEARCH PROGRAM THAT WILL BUILD THE SKILLS AND CONFIDENCE NECESSARY FOR STUDENTS TO MATRICULATE INTO AND SUCCEED IN THE BIOMEDICAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES. AMERICAN INDIAN COMMUNITIES HAVE A RICH HISTORY OF SCIENCE SPANNING THOUSANDS OF YEARS THAT HAS BEEN OVERLOOKED AND UNDERVALUED BY WESTERN SCIENCE, LEADING TO DISPARITIES IN EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT. DESPITE THEIR LONG-STANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE, AMERICAN INDIAN POPULATIONS HAVE THE LOWEST HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION RATES AND ONLY 47% OF AMERICAN INDIAN STUDENTS ARE ENROLLED IN K-12 PUBLIC SCHOOLS WITH A FULL RANGE OF STEM CURRICULUM. THUS, THE PROPOSED GRANT SEEKS TO DEVELOP AND DELIVER EDUCATIONAL AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES FOR AMERICAN INDIAN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THE BIOMEDICAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES TO INCREASE THEIR INTEREST IN PURSUING STUDIES AND CAREERS IN STEM BY ADDRESSING THE FOLLOWING AIMS: 1) ENGAGE 6-12TH GRADE STUDENTS IN STEM BASED WORKSHOPS AND ACTIVITIES TO INCREASE INTEREST IN STEM FIELDS AND CAREERS; 2) DEVELOP AND RUN A MENTORED SUMMER PROGRAM AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SAN MARCOS TO ENGAGE AMERICAN INDIAN STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES IN STEM ACTIVITIES AND COLLEGE READINESS; 3) CREATE A NEAR-PEER MENTORING PROGRAM BETWEEN STUDENTS IN CURRENT NIH SUPPORTED TRAINING PROGRAMS AND 6-12TH GRADE AMERICAN INDIAN STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES; 4) PROVIDE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR AMERICAN INDIAN STUDENTS TO GAIN EXPERIENCE IN STEM, INCLUDING IN THE AREA OF SUBSTANCE USE AND OPIOID OVERDOSE WITHIN NATIVE NATIONS. YOUTH WILL BE PROVIDED MENTORING FROM BOTH PROGRAM FACULTY AND FROM NEAR-PEER MENTORS, WILL ENGAGE IN INTERACTIVE SCIENCE ACTIVITIES, AND WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BOTH SHADOW IN RESEARCH LABS AND DEVELOP THEIR OWN RESEARCH PROJECTS TO ADDRESS SUBSTANCE USE AND OPIOID OVERDOSE IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. HERE WE PROPOSE A JOINT STUDY OF OCEAN COLOR SATELLITE DATA AND THE LATEST GENERATION OF EARTH SYSTEM MODELS (WHICH ARE PART OF THE 6TH COUPLED MODEL INTERCOMPARISON CMIP6) TO: (1) IMPROVE THE KSM09 ALGORITHM COMPARE IT WITH AN ABSORPTION-BASED PFT ALGORITHM AND PRODUCE A MULTI-PLATFORM MERGED DATA SET AND (2) ESTABLISH BIOLOGY-PHYSICS CONNECTIONS AND CHARACTERIZE BIOLOGICAL EL NI O-SOUTHERN OSCILLATION (ENSO) VARIABILITY IN THIS SATELLITE RECORD AND IN CLIMATE MODELS. (2006). IF REASONABLE CLOSURE OF BACKSCATTERING VALUES AND SPECTRAL SHAPE CANNOT BE OBTAINED MIE CODE FOR COATED SPHERES WILL BE USED INSTEAD (ZHANG ET AL. 2017). TASK A2. COMPARISON WITH ABSORPTIONBASED ALGORITHM OF ROY ET AL. (2013): SATELLITE IMAGERY OF PSD/PFT GENERATED USING THE KSM/TK16 ALGORITHMS WILL BE COMPARED TO THE OUTPUT OF THE ROY ET AL. FAST-TRACK TO SUCCESS: BRIDGING THE CTE AND HIGHER EDUCATION TO EMPOWER STUDENTS FOR IMMEDIATE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE & HE) -ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY IS ESSENTIAL TO THE NATIONAL INDUSTRY. YET, THERE IS A LACK OF COLLABORATION OR KNOWN PARTNERSHIPS AMONG SECONDARY AND HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS TO CREATE CAREER PATHWAYS THAT OFFER DUAL ENROLLMENT AND ARTICULATE THESE TYPES OF WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT IN THE ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY FIELDS. THIS PROJECT PROPOSES ASSEMBLING A COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY CONSISTING OF CANYON CREST ACADEMY, MIRACOSTA COLLEGE AND PALOMAR COLLEGE, AND CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SAN MARCOS TO CREATE A PATHWAY FOR STUDENTS INTO THE ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY. BY DEVELOPING A THREE-COURSE SERIES TO EDUCATE HIGH SCHOOL, COMMUNITY COLLEGE, AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, THIS INITIATIVE WILL PROVIDE A FAST-TRACK PATHWAY FOR WORKFORCE-READY PREPARATION AT EACH EDUCATIONAL LEVEL. THE FOUR INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERS WILL SEEK TO ADDRESS THE LOCAL DEMAND FOR SKILLED ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING TECHNICIANS IN NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY BY TEACHING HANDS-ON LABORATORY EXPERIENCES AND ALIGNING CURRICULA ACROSS EDUCATIONAL LEVELS TO OPTIMIZE RESOURCE USE AND INSTRUCTOR MENTORING. THIS APPROACH NOT ONLY INCREASES INTERNSHIP AND JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS BUT ALSO FOSTERS A SENSE OF BELONGING AND COMMUNITY AMONG PARTICIPANTS. THE PROJECT'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT LIES IN ITS ADAPTIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND FOCUS ON FAST-TRACK EDUCATION IN CRITICAL AREAS SUCH AS DIGITAL ELECTRONICS, LABVIEW, AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN LOWER DIVISION COURSES OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING. AT THE SAME TIME, ITS BROADER IMPACTS INCLUDE THE DEVELOPMENT OF A REGIONAL TECHNICAL EDUCATION COMMUNITY BETWEEN TWO-YEAR AND FOUR-YEAR EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, IMPROVED PEER MENTORING, AND ENHANCED STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN THEIR CHOSEN FIELDS. THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY THE ADVANCED TECHNOLOGICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM THAT FOCUSES ON THE EDUCATION OF TECHNICIANS FOR THE ADVANCED-TECHNOLOGY FIELDS THAT DRIVE THE NATION'S ECONOMY. BEHAVIORAL ECONOMIC DEMAND FOR CANNABIS AND TOBACCO AMONG YOUNG ADULT DUAL USERS - PROJECT SUMMARY AN ESTIMATED 1.5 MILLION U.S. YOUNG ADULTS ARE DUAL USERS OF CANNABIS AND TOBACCO. DUAL USERS EXPERIENCE HIGHER RATES OF DEPENDENCE AND DIFFICULTY QUITTING, COMPOUNDING THEIR RISK OF LONG- TERM HEALTH PROBLEMS AND POSING A UNIQUE PUBLIC HEALTH CHALLENGE. DRIVE TO OBTAIN AND USE SUBSTANCES DESPITE COST IS A CENTERPIECE OF ADDICTION. OVERVALUATION OF SUBSTANCES IS CAPTURED BY THE CONCEPT BEHAVIORAL ECONOMIC DEMAND (REFERRED TO HEREAFTER AS DEMAND). PROGRESS IN PREVENTING AND TREATING DUAL USE AMONG YOUNG ADULTS REQUIRES STUDYING DEMAND FOR CANNABIS AND TOBACCO IN THREE KEY AREAS. FIRST, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO CHARACTERIZE DEMAND FOR CANNABIS AND TOBACCO AMONG USERS OF BOTH SUBSTANCES AND UNDERSTAND HOW DEMAND FOR EACH SUBSTANCE CHANGES OVER TIME (AIM 1). SECOND, CRITICAL GAPS IN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF DUAL USE INCLUDE NOT KNOWING HOW THE LINK BETWEEN DEMAND AND SUBSTANCE-SPECIFIC OUTCOMES, SUCH AS DEPENDENCE AND QUIT ATTEMPTS OPERATES AMONG DUAL USERS, AND WHETHER DEMAND FOR ONE SUBSTANCE IMPACTS OUTCOMES FOR THE CO-USED SUBSTANCE (AIM 2). THIRD, THE LACK OF A THEORY-BASED, EXPLANATORY MODEL CONNECTING DEMAND TO DUAL USE IS A BARRIER TO PROGRESS IN PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF DUAL USE. SOCIAL COGNITIVE THEORY (SCT) IS A WIDELY USED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH MODEL FOR UNDERSTANDING SUBSTANCE USE, CONTAINING MODIFIABLE FACTORS SUCH AS EXPECTANCIES, PERCEPTIONS OF RISK AND SOCIAL ACCEPTABILITY, AND IDENTITY, WHICH HAS YET TO BE APPLIED TO DUAL USE OF CANNABIS AND TOBACCO. THIS STUDY WILL IDENTIFY SCT FACTORS LINKED WITH DEMAND AND DUAL USE (AIM 3), PROVIDING ACTIONABLE TARGETS OF INTERVENTION. ADDRESSING THESE AIMS WILL CREATE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS IN PREVENTING AND TREATING A UNIQUE PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM AMONG A HIGH-RISK GROUP, CONSISTENT WITH NIDA’S MISSION. A PROSPECTIVE, COHORT DESIGN WILL BE USED TO MEASURE BEHAVIORAL ECONOMIC DEMAND FOR TOBACCO AND CANNABIS, CURRENT USE OF TOBACCO AND CANNABIS AND RELATED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH EFFECTS, AND SCT FACTORS AMONG 250 YOUNG ADULTS (AGE 18-25) CURRENT TOBACCO AND CANNABIS USERS IN SAN DIEGO, CA AT THREE, 75-MINUTE VISITS: BASELINE, MONTH 6, AND MONTH 12. THE STUDY WILL BE CONDUCTED BY AN EXPERIENCED UNIVERSITY RESEARCH LAB IN SAN DIEGO, CA WITH A TRACK RECORD OF RECRUITING AND RETAINING TOBACCO AND CANNABIS USERS, IN COLLABORATION WITH AN EXPERT IN BEHAVIORAL ECONOMIC DEMAND MEASUREMENT AND A LEADING BIOSTATISTICIAN. THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS A HIGH-QUALITY RESEARCH EXPERIENCE IN THE EXECUTION, ANALYSIS, AND REPORTING OF THE STUDY, CONSISTENT WITH THE R16 AIM.

DESIGNING TECHNOLOGY TO FACILITATE PARTICIPATION IN HEALTH BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS AMONG UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS: A CBPR APPROACH TO REDUCE HEALTH DISPARITIES AND ADDRESS CHANGING NORMS SINCE COVID-19 - PROJECT SUMMARY LIFE, AS WE KNOW IT, HAS CHANGED DUE TO COVID-19. EXISTING HEALTH DISPARITIES AMONG UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES WERE EXACERBATED. LATINOS AND NATIVE HAWAIIANS AND PACIFIC ISLANDERS (NHPI) DISPROPORTIONATELY EXPERIENCE DISPARITIES IN HEALTH, EVEN WHEN COMPARED TO OTHER MINORITY POPULATIONS. BOTH POPULATIONS HAVE HEART DISEASE, CANCER, AND DIABETES AS LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH; AND BOTH LATINOS AND NHPIS HAVE HIGH RATES OF OBESITY. AS WE BEGIN TO RECOVER FROM THE PANDEMIC, WE MUST CONSIDER THE INTERSECTION OF CONTINUED HEALTH DISPARITIES, NEW SOCIAL NORMS AND ATTITUDES, AND NEW PATTERNS OF HEALTH BEHAVIOR. THE OVERARCHING GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO REDUCE HEALTH DISPARITIES AMONG LATINOS AND NATIVE NHPIS, CONSIDERING NEW HEALTH BEHAVIOR PATTERNS, SOCIAL NORMS, AND INCREASED TECHNOLOGY USE RELATED TO COVID-19. THE RESEARCH PROJECT SPECIFIC AIMS ARE TO: (1) CONDUCT KEY INFORMANT INTERVIEWS AND FOCUS GROUPS AMONG LATINOS AND NHPIS, (2) DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A COMMUNITY HEALTH AND HEALTH BEHAVIOR SURVEY, AND (3) BASED ON COMMUNITY FEEDBACK [FROM AIMS 1 AND 2], CO-DESIGN, DEVELOP AND TEST NEW TECHNOLOGY, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CSUSM INNOVATION HUB, THAT IS MEANINGFUL AND RESPONSIVE TO COMMUNITY NEEDS AND PREFERENCES. ADDITIONALLY, WITH COMMITMENT TO TRAINING STUDENTS UNDERREPRESENTED IN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH, WE WERE PURPOSEFUL IN OUTLINING RESEARCH CAPACITY SPECIFIC AIMS. THEY ARE, TO: (1) ENHANCE THE RESEARCH CAPACITY OF STUDENTS UNDERREPRESENTED IN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH, ESPECIALLY TOWARDS TRAINING FUTURE INDEPENDENT HEALTH DISPARITY RESEARCHERS AND SCHOLARS, AND (2) ENHANCE THE RESEARCH CAPACITY, SUSTAINABILITY, AND EXCELLENCE OF CSUSM THROUGH MEANINGFUL COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN THE PRINCIPLE INVESTIGATOR AND THE CSUSM INNOVATION HUB, OTRES (FOR RECRUITMENT OF UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS), AND OTHER COLLABORATORS AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS. CAREER: MORPHOLOGY, PERFORMANCE, AND ECOLOGY OF THE ENDANGERED SALT MARSH HARVEST MOUSE AND CO-OCCURRING WETLAND RODENTS -UNDERSTANDING WHY A SPECIES IS ENDANGERED IS CRITICAL TO PLANNING FOR ITS RECOVERY. COMBINING WORK IN THE FIELD AND IN THE LABORATORY, THIS STUDY INVESTIGATES THE ENDANGERED SALT MARSH HARVEST MOUSE, ENDEMIC TO THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY ESTUARY, AND HOW IT IS PHYSICALLY ADAPTED TO ITS WETLAND ENVIRONMENT. OCCUPYING HABITATS THAT EXPERIENCE NATURAL AND CONTROLLED FLOODING ON DAILY AND SEASONAL BASES, INDIVIDUALS OF THIS SPECIES ARE SUBJECTED TO CONTINUAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES THAT IMPACT THEIR BEHAVIOR. YET LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT HOW THEY MANAGE TO FORAGE, SURVIVE, AND REPRODUCE. FURTHERMORE, THESE ENDANGERED MICE OFTEN SHARE THESE HABITATS WITH OTHER RODENTS, AND IT IS NOT CLEAR HOW OR WHETHER THEY AVOID COMPETING WITH THEM. TO ADVANCE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE ECOLOGICAL AND EVOLUTIONARY CHALLENGES OF THIS ENDANGERED SPECIES, AND OTHER RELATED SPECIES, THIS PROJECT INVESTIGATES HOW INDIVIDUALS PERFORM BASIC FUNCTIONS OF BITING, CLIMBING, AND SWIMMING AS THEY RELATE TO FORAGING AND MOVING THROUGH THEIR HABITATS. BECAUSE THESE FUNCTIONS ARE INFLUENCED BY ANATOMY, DIFFERENCES IN IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF THEIR BODY FORM ARE ANALYZED, SUCH AS TAIL AND LIMB LENGTHS, FOOT PAD SIZE AND SHAPE, AND HEAD WIDTH AND DEPTH. THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PERFORMANCE AND BODY FORM PROVIDE INSIGHTS INTO HOW AND WHY PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES AMONG SPECIES HAVE EVOLVED. UNDERSTANDING VARIATION IN FORM AND FUNCTION IS IMPERATIVE FOR PREDICTING LONG-TERM SUCCESS OF SALT MARSH HARVEST MOUSE IN RESPONSE TO HABITAT MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND SEA LEVEL RISE ASSOCIATED WITH CLIMATE CHANGE. A NEW FIELD COURSE CENTERED ON THE ECOLOGY OF THE SUISUN MARSH, CALIFORNIA, WILL BE IMPLEMENTED TO TEACH STUDENTS MARKETABLE FIELD AND QUANTITATIVE SKILLS, TO CONTRIBUTE DATA TO THE RESEARCH PROJECT, AND TO INSTILL AN UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION FOR THE ECOLOGICAL ROLES OF RARE AND ENDANGERED SPECIES. THIS STUDY INTEGRATES MORPHOLOGY, BIOMECHANICS, ECOLOGY, AND GENETICS TO EXAMINE THE ECOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS OF DIFFERENCES IN MORPHOLOGY AND PERFORMANCE AMONG THE ENDANGERED SALT MARSH HARVEST MOUSE AND OTHER CO-OCCURRING WETLAND RODENTS. THE PROPOSED MORPHOLOGICAL AND KINEMATIC ANALYSES OF FEEDING- AND LOCOMOTOR-RELATED BEHAVIOR, PERFORMED IN THE LABORATORY, WILL PROVIDE INSIGHTS INTO HOW SALT MARSH HARVEST MICE AND OTHER WETLAND RODENTS NAVIGATE POTENTIALLY CONFLICTING DEMANDS OF THEIR DIVERSE SUBSTRATES AND HOW THEY PARTITION RESOURCES. THE LAB-BASED PERFORMANCE STUDIES ARE COMPLEMENTED BY WORK IN THE FIELD THAT ADDRESS THE ADAPTIVE VALUE OF THE TRAITS: LONG-TERM MARK-RECAPTURE STUDIES, QUANTIFICATION OF MICROHABITAT CHARACTERISTICS, AND GENETIC ANALYSES. INTEGRATING BASIC SCIENCE AND WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT OBJECTIVES, THIS WORK HAS THE POTENTIAL TO INFORM WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT POLICIES BY (1) IDENTIFYING LIMITATIONS TO THE SALT MARSH HARVEST MOUSE?S PHYSICAL ABILITIES TO USE MICROHABITAT AND FOOD RESOURCES AND (2) ILLUMINATING THE ADAPTIVE CONSEQUENCES OF DIFFERENT WETLAND MANAGEMENT REGIMES. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SAN MARCOS (CSUSM) IS A HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTION WITH A STRONG TRADITION OF INVOLVING UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS IN ALL LEVELS OF ACADEMIC RESEARCH. THE PROJECT TEAM EXPECTS THAT INVOLVING FAMILIES IN STUDENTS? RESEARCH EXPERIENCES WILL INCREASE SUPPORT ACADEMIC AND CAREER ASPIRATIONS AND LEAD TO BETTER OUTCOMES. SURVEYS, INTERVIEWS, AND INSTITUTIONAL DATA WILL BE USED TO EVALUATE HOW ENROLLING IN RESEARCH-BASED COURSES AFFECTS STUDENTS? ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE, INTEREST IN SCIENCE CAREERS, AND MOTIVATION TO CONTINUE DOING RESEARCH. FINDINGS WILL BE DISSEMINATED AT REGIONAL AND NATIONAL CONFERENCES WITH AN EMPHASIS ON SHARING INSTRUCTOR RESOURCES AND COURSE MATERIALS THAT CAN BE IMPLEMENTED EFFECTIVELY. THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY THE HSI PROGRAM, WHICH AIMS TO ENHANCE UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION AND INCREASE CAPACITY TO ENGAGE IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF INNOVATIONS TO IMPROVE STEM TEACHING AND LEARNING AT HSIS. THIS PROJECT WILL BE ONE OF THE LARGEST MIXED-METHODS STUDIES VOLUNTEERING AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AMONG LATINO ELDERS. WE WILL EXAMINE IMPACTS DERIVED THROUGH PARTICIPATION IN AN 10-WEEK CIVIC ENGAGEMENT CLASS THAT WAS SPECIFICALLY CREATED FOR LOW-INCOME, AND SPANISH-SPEAKING LATINO ELDERS. THE COURSE IS CALLED, CULTIVANDO SABIDURIA (CULTIVATING WISDOM) AND IS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE UNIVERSITY, COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, AND ELDERS. THE PROPOSED STUDY ADDRESSES FUNDING PRIORITY 2: HOW DOES AN INDIVIDUAL'S CIVIC ENGAGEMENT CHANGE OVER THE COURSE OF A LIFETIME AND FUNDING PRIORITY 3: UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACTS ASSOCIATED WITH CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, VOLUNTEERING, AND NATIONAL SERVICE. OUR GOAL IS TO DEVELOP METHODOLOGICAL AND THEORETICAL INNOVATIONS TO HELP US RECOGNIZE STRENGTHS ALONG WITH UNDERSTANDING THE ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND HEALTH BENEFITS TO VOLUNTEERING AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT FOR LATINO ELDERS. WE WILL USE PRE- AND POST-TESTS, AND OTHER METRICS TO STUDY 150 LATINO PARTICIPANTS, AGES 55+ YEARS OLD WHO ARE PRIMARILY LOW INCOME AND HAVE LOW (FORMAL) EDUCATIONAL LEVELS. DISSEMINATION OF STUDY RESULTS IS IMPORTANT TO REGIONAL AND NATIONAL STAKEHOLDERS, WHO ARE COMMITTED TO FACILITATING GREATER OPPORTUNITIES FOR LIFELONG VOLUNTEERING AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT. THE NATIONAL LATINO RESEARCH CENTER IS AN APPLIED RESEARCH CENTER AT CSUSM. THE RESEARCHERS AT NLRC HAVE OVER 17 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE SUCCESSFULLY CONDUCTING RESEARCH IN THE AREAS OF EDUCATION, CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, YOUTH JUSTICE, HEALTH, DISASTER PREPAREDNESS WITH AN EXCELLENT TRACK RECORD FOR OUTREACH AND CREDIBILITY IN THE COMMUNITY. DRS. MARISOL CLARK-IBA?EZ, ARCELA NU?EZ-ALVAREZ, MICHELLE RAMOS-PELLICIA, AND ALICIA GONZALES HAVE EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN PROMOTING EDUCATION AND CIVIC LITERACY. DR. CHARACTERIZING BREAST CANCER INVASION AND PROLIFERATION WHEN CO-AGGREGATED WITH ADIPOCYTES IN MULTICELLULAR SPHEROIDS CREATED WITH A CUSTOM BIOREACTOR TO AUGMENT CELL-CELL CONNECTIVITY. - PROJECT SUMMARY BREAST CANCER IS THE MOST COMMON FORM OF CANCER IN WOMEN AND IS CONSIDERED A MODERN-DAY EPIDEMIC, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE OF THE HIGH DEGREE OF HETEROGENEITY. MULTIPLE STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT THE TUMOR MICROENVIRONMENT CONTRIBUTES TO CANCER GROWTH AND CHEMORESISTANCE. CANCER-ADIPOCYTE INTERACTIONS HAVE GAINED INCREASED ATTENTION AS THE CROSSTALK BETWEEN THEM HAS BEEN SHOWN TO PROMOTE TUMOR PROLIFERATION AND INCREASED CANCER MIGRATION. HOWEVER, THE PHYSIOLOGICAL RELEVANCE OF PREVIOUS CO-CULTURE METHODS IS QUESTIONABLE. SEVERAL PAST STUDIES DID NOT USE HUMAN CELLS, OR DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN WHITE AND BROWN ADIPOCYTES, WHICH HAVE DIFFERENT PHENOTYPES. IN THIS PROPOSAL WE WILL ANALYZE TUMOR INVASIVENESS OF HUMAN TRIPLE NEGATIVE AND LUMINAL A BREAST CANCER CELLS WHEN CO-CULTURED WITH HUMAN BROWN AND WHITE ADIPOCYTES. TO DO THIS, WE PROPOSE TO USE A 3D MULTICELLULAR TUMOR SPHEROID SYSTEM. TUMOR SPHEROIDS PROVIDE A PHYSIOLOGICAL RELEVANT ENVIRONMENT TO STUDY CANCER BIOLOGY AND DRUG DISCOVERY. COMPARED TO 2D PARADIGMS, RESEARCH SHOWS 3D MODELS BETTER RECAPITULATE CHEMORESISTANCE AND TUMOR GROWTH FOUND IN HUMAN IN VIVO TUMORS. IN THE LAB, WE HAVE DEVELOPED A BIOREACTOR THAT USES SURFACE VIBRATIONS TO PRODUCE FARADAY WAVES THAT AGGREGATE CELLS INSIDE A LIQUID CHAMBER. DEVICES WITH SIMILAR TECHNOLOGY HAVE BEEN USED TO ASSEMBLE SCAFFOLD-FREE 3D CELL CONSTRUCTS AND SPHEROIDS IN A RAPID AND SCALABLE WAY, WITHOUT THE NEED FOR ADDITIONAL CHEMICALS OR INTRUSIVE PROCEDURES. IN THIS GRANT, WE ALSO SEEK TO DETERMINE IF THIS TECHNOLOGY GENERATES MULTICELLULAR SPHEROIDS WITH GREATER CELL-CELL ADHESION, COMPARED TO STANDARD SELF-ASSEMBLY. TO ACHIEVE THE SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL GOALS OF THIS GRANT, TWO SPECIFIC AIMS ARE PROPOSED: THE FIRST AIM WILL COMPARE THE VIABILITY AND CONNECTIVITY OF MULTICELLULAR SPHEROIDS FORMED WITH OUR SURFACE VIBRATION BIOREACTOR VERSUS STANDARD SELF-ASSEMBLY SPHEROIDS. THE SECOND AIM WILL MEASURE CHANGES IN TUMOR INVASIVENESS AND PROLIFERATION IN TUMOR SPHEROIDS MADE WITH HUMAN CANCER CELLS AND HUMAN ADIPOCYTES. WE WILL COMPARE TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF BREAST CANCER CELLS: TRIPLE NEGATIVE AND LUMINAL A AND TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF ADIPOCYTES: WHITE AND BROWN ADIPOCYTES. THESE COMBINATIONS WILL ALLOW US TO INVESTIGATE THE INTERACTIONS OF DIFFERENT CANCER PHENOTYPES WITH SPECIFIC ADIPOCYTE CELL TYPES. OVERALL, THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL HAVE A MAJOR SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL IMPACT BY EXPANDING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF BREAST CANCER-ADIPOCYTE INTERACTIONS AND TESTING A TECHNOLOGY THAT COULD DELIVER MULTICELLULAR SPHEROIDS WITH IMPROVED INTRACELLULAR CONNECTIVITY IN A SCALABLE MANNER. EMPLOYING METAGENOMIC AND CHROMATIN CAPTURE TECHNIQUES TO MAP THE EVOLUTION OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE IN COASTAL MICROBIOMES - PROJECT SUMMARY THE SPREAD OF MICROBIAL ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE (AR) IS A GLOBAL HEALTHCARE PROBLEM DRIVEN BY THE EXTENSIVE CLINICAL AND AGRICULTURAL USE OF ANTIBIOTICS. NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS SERVE AS MASSIVE HARBORS OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE RESERVOIRS, KNOWN AS THE “RESISTOME”. GENES THAT ENCODE AR EXIST ON MOBILE GENETIC ELEMENTS AND ARE TRANSFERRED BETWEEN MICROBES THROUGH HORIZONTAL GENE TRANSFER (HGT); THIS TRANSFER CAN BE TRIGGERED IN RESPONSE TO ANTIBIOTIC EXPOSURE. COASTAL ENVIRONMENTS HAVE INCREASED EXPOSURE TO ANTIBIOTIC WASTE FROM ANTHROPOGENIC INPUTS SUCH AS WASTE- AND STORMWATER RUNOFF, WHICH INFLUENCE THE SPREAD OF AR GENES FROM NON-PATHOGENIC MICROBES TO HUMAN PATHOGENS. HUMANS EXPOSED TO COASTAL WATERS ARE AT INCREASED RISK OF DRUG-RESISTANT INFECTIONS AFTER STORMS OR NEAR WASTEWATER OUTLETS, AS WELL AS WHEN EATING SEAFOOD WITH ANTIBIOTIC-RESISTANT MICROBIOMES. ELUCIDATING THE SOURCES AND PATTERNS OF AR GENE TRANSFER IN ENVIRONMENTAL RESERVOIRS IN RESPONSE TO THESE RUNOFFS IS THEREFORE OF GREAT IMPORTANCE. WHILE INCREASES IN AR IN RESPONSE TO RUNOFFS HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED, MAPPING THE TRANSFER OF AR GENES TO PARTICULAR COMMUNITY MEMBERS HAS YET TO BE ESTABLISHED IN COASTAL MICROBIOMES. IN THIS PROPOSAL, WE SEEK TO EXPLORE THE CHANGES IN RESISTOME DISTRIBUTION IN COASTAL MICROBIAL POPULATIONS, SPECIFICALLY IN RESPONSE TO ANTIBIOTICS AND STORM RUNOFF, THROUGH A COMBINATION OF METAGENOMIC APPROACHES. 1) WE WILL EMPLOY A METAGENOMIC CHROMATIN CONFORMATION CAPTURE (METAHIC) TO TRACE THE MOVEMENT OF MOBILE GENETIC ELEMENTS AND AR GENES BETWEEN MICROBIAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN RESPONSE TO TREATMENT WITH TETRACYCLINE, AN ANTIBIOTIC COMMONLY IN RUNOFF AND KNOWN TO INDUCE HGT. METAHIC CAN MAP MOBILE ELEMENTS TO PARTICULAR MICROBIAL HOSTS, PROVIDING A DETAILED LOOK AT HOW ANTIBIOTIC CONTAMINATION AFFECTS RESISTOME DISTRIBUTION IN COMPLEX MICROBIAL COMMUNITIES. 2) WE WILL COMBINE METAHIC DATA WITH LONG- READ METAGENOMIC SEQUENCING TO DEFINE THE RATIO IN WHICH INTEGRATIVE CONJUGATIVE ELEMENTS (ICES, ONE OF THE MAIN MOBILE GENETIC ELEMENTS THAT CARRY AR GENES) ARE EXCISED OR INTEGRATED IN MICROBIAL GENOMES IN RESPONSE TO TETRACYCLINE TREATMENT. 3) USING METAHIC ON COASTAL MICROBIOMES THROUGHOUT RAINSTORMS, WE WILL BUILD ON PRELIMINARY DATA (WHICH REVEALED TAXONOMIC AND RESISTOME COMPOSITION CHANGES IN RESPONSE TO STORM RUNOFF) TO DEVELOP A PROFILE OF COASTAL MICROBES CONTAINING AR GENES FOLLOWING RAINSTORMS. WE ANTICIPATE THAT A) TETRACYCLINE WILL INDUCE EXCISION AND TRANSFER OF ICES IN COASTAL MICROBIOMES IN A NON-AR GENE-SPECIFIC MANNER, B) INCREASES IN THE ABUNDANCE OF KNOWN PATHOGENS THAT ARE ANTIBIOTIC-RESISTANT WILL APPEAR WITHIN 24-72 HOURS OF STORM RUNOFF, C) INCREASES IN THE ABUNDANCE OF ANTIBIOTIC-RESISTANT COMMENSAL BACTERIA WILL BE OBSERVED AFTER RAINSTORMS, CREATING A RESISTOME RESERVOIR FOR CLINICALLY RELEVANT HUMAN PATHOGENS TO USE AS A GENETIC SOURCE OF AR. THIS RESEARCH WILL BE PERFORMED BY UNDERGRADUATES AND WILL ELUCIDATE THE SPREAD OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE IN COASTAL MICROBIOMES.

THE EFFECT OF LOW VOLUME SPRINT INTERVAL TRAINING ON CARDIORESPIRATORY FITNESS; A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL - PROJECT SUMMARY LOW LEVELS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY (PA) AND CARDIORESPIRATORY FITNESS (CRF) ARE SIGNIFICANT ISSUES FOR SOCIETAL HEALTH. PUBLIC HEALTH GUIDELINES FOR ADULTS RECOMMEND > 150 MIN OF MODERATE-INTENSITY CONTINUOUS TRAINING (MICT) OR 75 MIN OF VIGOROUS EXERCISE PER WEEK, AND STRENGTH TRAINING ON > 2 DAYS PER WEEK (U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES, 2018). HOWEVER, IN 2020, 75% OF ADULT AMERICANS DID NOT MEET THESE PA RECOMMENDATIONS (ELGADDAL ET AL., 2022). PHYSICAL INACTIVITY IS THE FOURTH LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH WORLDWIDE (KOHL ET AL., 2012) AS IT INCREASES THE RISK OF 40 CHRONIC CONDITIONS (RUEGSEGGER AND BOOTH, 2018). LOW MAXIMAL OXYGEN UPTAKE (V̇O2MAX; THE GOLD STANDARD INDEX OF CRF) IS STRONGLY ASSOCIATED WITH INCREASED RISK OF FUTURE MORBIDITY AND ALL-CAUSE MORTALITY (ROSS ET AL., 2016, LANG ET AL., 2024). IN FACT, MANY LARGE-SCALE STUDIES HAVE REPORTED V̇O2MAX TO BE A MORE POWERFUL PREDICTOR OF RISK FOR FUTURE MORBIDITY AND ALL-CAUSE MORTALITY THAN MORE TRADITIONAL RISK FACTORS SUCH AS SMOKING, HYPERTENSION, OBESITY, HIGH CHOLESTEROL, AND INSULIN RESISTANCE (MYERS ET AL., 2002, KODAMA ET AL., 2009, FOGELHOLM, 2010, KOKKINOS AND MYERS, 2010). FOR POPULATION-LEVEL HEALTH, THE LARGEST BENEFITS FROM IMPROVED PA AND CRF ARE GAINED BY THE LEAST FIT INDIVIDUALS, WITH EVEN SMALL INCREASES IN FITNESS SHOWN TO IMPROVE HEALTH (KODAMA ET AL., 2009). DESPITE EXERCISE BEING THE ONLY VIABLE MEANS TO IMPROVE V̇O2MAX, IT REMAINS UNDERUTILIZED FOR PRIMARY DISEASE PREVENTION (EKKEKAKIS, 2021, HANSSEN ET AL., 2022). NEVERTHELESS, ADULTS DO NOT ENGAGE IN PA DUE TO A PERCEIVED LACK OF TIME. HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING (HIIT) IS A TIME-EFFICIENT FORM OF PA REQUIRING BRIEF INTENSE BURSTS OF ACTIVITY SEPARATED BY REST PERIODS. EMPIRICAL DATA SHOW THAT HIIT ELICITS SIMILAR AND IN SOME CASES SUPERIOR BENEFITS VERSUS MICT, OFTEN WITH LESS TIME. A SPECIAL TYPE OF HIIT IS REDUCED EXERTION HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING (REHIT) REQUIRING ONLY TWO 20 SECOND SPRINTS WITHIN A 10 MINUTE SESSION. A FEW STUDIES SHOW THAT REHIT INCREASES CRF AND OTHER HEALTH-RELATED OUTCOMES, YET THESE STUDIES HAVE BEEN CRITICIZED DUE TO THEIR SMALL SAMPLE SIZE, WHICH SERVES TO QUESTION THE BROAD APPLICATION OF REHIT IN ADULTS. THE PROPOSED RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL WILL RECRUIT 60 INACTIVE ADULTS TO COMPLETE 24 SESSIONS OF REHIT AND COMPARE RESULTANT CHANGES IN CRF, SUBSTRATE METABOLISM, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL RESPONSES TO A NON-EXERCISING CONTROL GROUP. THIS SAMPLE SIZE IS THREEFOLD HIGHER THAN USED IN PRIOR WORK AND PROVIDES ADEQUATE STATISTICAL POWER TO DETECT MEANINGFUL INCREASES IN V̇O2MAX. THE PROPOSED STUDY WILL ADVANCE FURTHER RESEARCH IN THE AREA OF HIIT AND IF SUCCESSFUL, MAY PROMOTE INCLUSION OF REHIT IN PA RECOMMENDATIONS AS A FEASIBLE ALTERNATIVE OR ADJUNCT TO MODERATE OR VIGOROUS-INTENSITY EXERCISE AS PROMOTED IN CURRENT PA RECOMMENDATIONS.

TO INCREASE WOUND HEALING EFFICIENCY AND AVOID NEGATIVE OUTCOMES, IT IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT TO INVESTIGATE THE NORMAL CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS REQUIRED FOR WOUND REPAIR. EPIDERMAL T CELLS PLAY KEY ROLES IN THE INFLAMMATION AND PROLIFERATION STAGES OF WOUND REPAIR IN MICE AND HUMANS. DURING HOMEOSTASIS AND UPON TCR ENGAGEMENT EPIDERMAL T CELLS REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SIGNALS VIA CHEMOKINE/ CYTOKINES TO REGULATE FUNCTIONAL OUTCOMES DURING WOUND REPAIR. KERATINOCYTES UPREGULATE CHEMOKINES SUCH AS CCL20 DURING WOUND HEALING. CCR6, THE RECEPTOR FOR CCL20, IS EXPRESSED BY T CELLS INFILTRATING THE EPIDERMIS, BUT LESS IS KNOWN ABOUT OTHER CCR6 FUNCTIONS AND THE ROLE OF CCR6 IN EPIDERMAL T CELL FUNCTION. CHRONIC CYTOKINE/CHEMOKINE PRODUCTION IN TYPE 2 DIABETES AND OBESITY ALTERS EPIDERMAL T CELL WOUND HEALING FUNCTIONS, BUT THE MECHANISM AND ROLE OF CHEMOKINES IN THIS ALTERED FUNCTION IS NOT WELL UNDERSTOOD. HERE WE PROPOSE TO ELUCIDATE THE MECHANISMS BY WHICH INFLAMMATORY CHEMOKINES SUCH AS CCL20/CCR6 REGULATE EPIDERMAL T CELL FUNCTION IN WOUND REPAIR AND HOW DYSFUNCTION OCCURS IN TYPE 2 DIABETES AND OBESITY. THE FOLLOWING SPECIFIC AIMS ARE PROPOSED: AIM 1: DETERMINE HOW EPIDERMAL T CELL CCR6 EXPRESSION IS MODULATED BY WOUND REPAIR IN NONDIABETIC LEAN VERSUS DIABETIC OBESE MICE. AIM 2: ELUCIDATE THE ROLE OF CCL20/CCR6 IN STIMULATING A REGULATORY SWITCH IN EPIDERMAL T CELL FUNCTION IN WOUND REPAIR. AIM 3: IDENTIFY HOW CHRONIC CCL20 EXPOSURE MODULATES EPIDERMAL T CELLS IN WOUND REPAIR AND WHETHER THERAPEUTIC CCL20 BLOCKADE RESTORES FUNCTION IN DIABETIC OBESE MICE. THESE SPECIFIC AIMS WILL BE TESTED IN MURINE MODELS COMBINING CELL BIOLOGY, HISTOLOGY, AND IN VIVO TECHNIQUES. THIS RESEARCH IS SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE IDENTIFYING THE MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE FOR NORMAL EPIDERMAL T CELL FUNCTION IN WOUND REPAIR MAY DEFINE NEW TARGETS FOR THERAPEUTICS. IN ADDITION, THE STUDIES PROPOSED HEREIN WILL DELINEATE HOW INFLAMMATORY CHEMOKINES IN DIABETES AND OBESITY MEDIATE DEFECTS IN EPIDERMAL T CELL FUNCTION IN TISSUE HOMEOSTASIS AND REPAIR. CAREFULLY DELINEATING THESE MECHANISMS IS REQUIRED FOR A FULL UNDERSTANDING OF HOW EPIDERMAL T CELLS ARE REGULATED TO IMPROVE WOUND CLOSURE. THE PROJECTS DESCRIBED HEREIN WILL PROVIDE HANDS-ON RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AT CSUSM. PARTICIPATING IN THIS RESEARCH PROJECT WILL IMPACT THEIR ABILITY TO COMPETITIVELY APPLY FOR GRADUATE LEVEL EDUCATION OR BIOTECHNOLOGY POSITIONS. TOGETHER THIS EXPERIMENTAL PLAN WILL CULMINATE WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL MECHANISMS OF EPIDERMAL T CELL REGULATION THAT CAN BE EVALUATED TO IMPROVE WOUND REPAIR IN OBESITY AND PROVIDE UNIQUE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS.

INDIVIDUALS CAN HAVE UP TO 11,000 CCTG REPEATS WITHIN THE CNBP GENE RESPONSIBLE FOR DISEASE. THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL ELUCIDATE THE MOLECULAR MECHANISMS OF CCTG REPEAT INSTABILITY WITH A SPECIFIC FOCUS ON LARGE-SCALE CONTRACTIONS AND DNA BREAKAGE USING BUDDING YEAST S. CEREVISIAE AS A MODEL ORGANISM. UNDERSTANDING THE MOLECULAR MECHANISMS OF CONTRACTIONS IS IMPORTANT TO EVALUATE WHETHER MANIPULATING THIS PROCESS WOULD BE A VIABLE APPROACH TO TREAT REPEAT EXPANSION DISEASE. WE WILL EVALUATE THE ROLE OF GENES INVOLVED IN THE MISMATCH REPAIR PATHWAY ON LARGE-SCALE CONTRACTIONS. WE WILL CARRY OUT GENETIC ANALYSIS OF DOUBLE MUTANTS AND SPECIFIC POINT MUTANTS THAT ARE CANDIDATES FOR STUDY BECAUSE OF THEIR ROLE IN PROTEIN BINDING DOMAINS OR IMPLICATIONS FROM HUMAN GENOME WIDE ASSOCIATION STUDIES. RECENTLY, MY LAB SHOWED THAT DISEASE-ASSOCIATED LENGTHS OF CCTG REPEATS CAUSE CHROMOSOMAL FRAGILITY IN VIVO. THIS PROJECT WILL ELUCIDATE HOW VARIABLES SUCH AS GENOMIC LOCATION AND DNA REPLICATION DYNAMICS AFFECT CCTG DNA FRAGILITY, WHICH HAS IMPORTANT IMPLICATIONS FOR UNDERSTANDING THE MECHANISMS OF EXPANSIONS AND CHROMOSOMAL TRANSLOCATIONS. FINALLY, WE WILL INVESTIGATE CCTG REPEAT-ASSOCIATED GENE EXPRESSION FROM A DISTINCT ANGLE BY CHARACTERIZING DIFFERENTIAL EFFECTS OF REPEAT LENGTH AND ORIENTATION ON STEADY-STATE TRANSCRIPT LEVELS AND RNA SPLICING. ALTOGETHER, THE PROPOSED STUDIES WILL PROVIDE FUNDAMENTAL INSIGHTS INTO THE MOLECULAR MECHANISMS OF DNA REPLICATION, REPAIR, AND TRANSCRIPTION THAT UNDERLIE THE ETIOLOGY OF THE TETRANUCLEOTIDE EXPANSION DISEASE DM2.

EFFECT OF HEAVY BACKPACK LOAD CARRIAGE ON ACUTE BLOOD FLOW, NERVE CONDUCTION, BIOMECHANICS AND DEXTERITY OF THE UPPER LIMBS - PROJECT SUMMARY FIRST RESPONDER, MILITARY, AND LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL REGULARLY CARRY BACKPACK LOADS OF UP TO 60% BODY WEIGHT. USE OF THE HANDS AND FINGERS IS OFTEN NEEDED DURING OR IMMEDIATELY AFTER LOAD CARRIAGE, BUT LOADS APPLIED VIA BACKPACK STRAPS CAN CONSTRICT BLOOD FLOW AND COMPRESS THE BRACHIAL PLEXUS NERVES OF THE UPPER LIMB. THESE FACTORS CAN POTENTIALLY LEAD TO PAIN, INJURY AND IMPAIRED USE OF THE UPPER LIMBS. UNDERSTANDING THE ACUTE EFFECTS OF HEAVY LOAD CARRIAGE ON UPPER LIMB PHYSIOLOGY WILL AID DEVELOPMENT OF FIELD-BASED FUNCTIONAL MEASURES TO REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY AND PREVENT LONG-TERM LOSS OF HAND FUNCTION. PERSONS WHO REGULARLY CARRY HEAVY BACKPACK LOADS FOR OCCUPATIONAL PURPOSES REPORT INCIDENCES OF PACK PALSY, A DISABILITY CAUSING LACK OF SENSATION AND WEAKNESS IN THE HANDS. THE PROPOSED WORK AIMS TO INVESTIGATE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG PHYSIOLOGICAL CHANGES, MANUAL FUNCTIONAL DEFICITS DURING PACK CARRIAGE, AND PACK PALSY. IT IS UNCLEAR HOW THE MAGNITUDE AND DURATION OF BACKPACK CARRIAGE AFFECTS ACUTE CHANGES IN GRIP STRENGTH, PINCH STRENGTH, MANUAL DEXTERITY AND LIGHT TOUCH SENSORY THRESHOLD. THE OVERALL HYPOTHESIS IS THAT WALKING WITH BACKPACK LOAD WILL CAUSE CHANGES IN UPPER LIMB BLOOD FLOW, EDEMA, AND NERVE CONDUCTION. FURTHER, WE EXPECT THESE PHYSIOLOGICAL CHANGES WILL RESULT IN MEASURABLE DIFFERENCES IN MANUAL DEXTERITY, STRENGTH, AND LIGHT TOUCH SENSORY THRESHOLD THAT WILL CHANGE WITH INCREASING LOAD IN THE BACKPACK AND DURATION OF TIME WALKING WITH LOAD. TO ADDRESS THE HYPOTHESES, I WILL DETERMINE THE RELATIVE ACUTE CHANGES IN UPPER LIMB BLOOD FLOW, EDEMA AND NERVE CONDUCTION BEFORE AND AFTER WALKING WITH HEAVY BACKPACK LOAD. I WILL ALSO IDENTIFY QUANTITATIVE CHANGES IN BLOOD FLOW, GRIP STRENGTH, PINCH STRENGTH AND MANUAL DEXTERITY AT LOAD LEVELS OF 15% AND 30% BODY WEIGHT AS COMPARED TO A CONTROL CONDITION. I WILL EXPLORE THE EFFECTS OF WALKING TIME WITH BACKPACK LOAD ON UPPER LIMB BLOOD FLOW AND LIGHT TOUCH SENSORY THRESHOLD OF THE FINGERS WHICH MAY BE AFFECTED BY NERVE COMPRESSION FROM BACKPACK STRAPS. THIS MUCH NEEDED RESEARCH WILL IMPROVE UNDERSTANDING OF UPPER LIMB PHYSIOLOGICAL AND NEUROMUSCULAR CHANGES WITH BACKPACK CARRIAGE. THE INNOVATIVE METHODOLOGY WILL ALLOW STUDY OF MULTIPLE UPPER LIMB PHYSIOLOGICAL CHANGES SIMULTANEOUSLY. INCREASED UNDERSTANDING OF BACKPACK CARRIAGE COULD IMPROVE PREVENTION OF BRACHIAL PLEXUS INJURY AND THEREFORE REDUCE INCIDENCES OF WEAKNESS OR LOSS OF HAND FUNCTION. APPLICATION OF THIS WORK COULD LEAD TO EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF BRACHIAL PLEXUS COMPRESSION BY MEANS OF FUNCTIONAL MEASURES. RESULTS OF THIS WORK MAY IMPROVE HAND FUNCTION, INJURY PREVENTION, AND TREATMENT OF THE UPPER EXTREMITY FOR THOSE WHO CARRY HEAVY BACKPACKS IN AN OCCUPATIONAL OR RECREATIONAL SETTING.

STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNIQUES CONVERT POWER MEASUREMENT TO WAVEFORM IMAGES FOR ANALYSIS WHICH HAS A CONSIDERABLE OVERHEAD FOR REAL-TIME ANALYSIS. THIS PROJECT WILL INSTEAD FOCUS ON DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE AI/ML MODELS THAT CAN DIRECTLY ANALYZE RAW DATA FOR ACCURATE FAULT PREDICTION AND DETECTION TO ACHIEVE IMPROVED RESPONSE DURING FAULTS OR OTHER EMERGENCY CONDITIONS. THIS IS ESSENTIAL FOR MAINTAINING GRID STABILITY. ADDITIONALLY, THE PROJECT WILL ESTABLISH NEW CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE TO PROVIDE MULTI-DISCIPLINARY RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN AI AND POWER SYSTEMS. WHILE OSCILLATION PREDICTION AND MITIGATION IN WIND FARMS IS THE TARGET PROBLEM, THE SAME CONCEPT CAN BE APPLIED MORE GENERALLY TO GRID ANOMALY DETECTION AND CYBERSECURITY CHALLENGES. IN ADDITION, THE AI/ML MODELS DEVELOPED COULD POTENTIALLY PAVE THE WAY FOR OTHER ASSET MONITORING APPLICATIONS, SUCH AS ELECTRIFIED TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS AND HEALTHCARE MONITORING. GIVEN THE PLETHORA OF APPLICATIONS WHERE THE APPROACH CAN BE APPLIED, THE PROJECT IS LIKELY TO HAVE SIGNIFICANT BROADER IMPACTS. NATIONWIDE COMMUNITY SCHOOLS ARE ANTICIPATED TO TRANSFORM EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES FOR VULNERABLE STUDENTS THROUGH ITS DISTINCTIVE MODEL OF “WHOLE CHILD, WHOLE FAMILY AND WHOLE COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS.” LOCATING CMS SERVICE PROVIDERS DIRECTLY IN LOCAL COMMUNITY SCHOOLS PROVIDES THE OPPORTUNITY TO DIRECTLY IMPACT SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH AT THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM LEVEL AND ULTIMATELY CONTRIBUTING TO THE REDUCTION OF HEALTH DISPARITIES FOR MINORITY COMMUNITIES. THE PROPOSED PROJECT IS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE NLRC, VISTA COMMUNITY CLINIC, AND VISTA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. THE NATIONAL LATINO RESEARCH CENTER (NLRC) IS AN ACADEMIC UNIT WITHIN THE OFFICE OF GRADUATE STUDIES AND RESEARCH. CSUSM IS A REGIONAL, FORWARD-FOCUSED UNIVERSITY IN SAN MARCOS, NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, SERVING MORE THAN 16,000 STUDENTS. CSUSM IS A HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTION (HSI) WITH LATINOS COMPRISING 47% OF THE STUDENT BODY. VISTA COMMUNITY CLINIC (VCC) IS A FEDERALLY QUALIFIED HEALTH CARE CENTER (FQHC) WITH A 50-YEAR HISTORY SERVING THE NORTH COUNTY REGION OF SAN DIEGO INCLUDING THE CITY OF VISTA. VISTA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT VUSD WAS AWARDED 5 COMMUNITY SCHOOL GRANTS FROM THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IN 2022 AND WAS RECENTLY AWARDED 9 MORE IN 2023. ALL SCHOOLS WHO WERE AWARDED COMMUNITY SCHOOL GRANTS MEET THE THRESHOLD OF AT LEAST 66% OF THE STUDENTS MEETING ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR THE NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM.

WHILE THERE HAVE BEEN SOME STUDIES THAT EXAMINE HOW SED INDIVIDUALS ENGAGE IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP TO OVERCOME DISCRIMINATION, WE HAVE LESS UNDERSTANDING ABOUT HOW MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES ARE WORKING TOGETHER IN COLLECTIVES TO CHANGE THE ENTREPRENEURIAL ECOSYSTEM AND CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR SED ENTREPRENEURS AT A LARGER SCALE. UNDERSTANDING HOW COLLECTIVES OF INDIVIDUALS, ENTREPRENEURS, AND ORGANIZATIONS ARE ENGAGING IN COLLECTIVE ACTION AND LEVERAGING COLLECTIVE IDENTITIES IS CRITICAL TO CREATING MORE INCLUSIVE ENTREPRENEURIAL ECOSYSTEMS AND BUILDING PATHWAYS TOWARDS SOCIAL MOBILITY FOR SED ENTREPRENEURS. WITH THE RAPID DEVELOPMENT OF AI TECHNIQUES, THE AI-ASSISTED UAV PARADIGM BECOMES PROMISING TO ENHANCE VARIOUS UAV OPERATIONS IN TERMS OF INTELLIGENCE, EFFECTIVENESS, AND EFFICIENCY. AT THE SAME TIME, THE INTEGRATION OF AI AND UAVS ALSO RAISES NEW SECURITY AND SAFETY CONCERNS. THIS PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE AND DEVELOP A NOVEL INTEGRATED AND EXTENSIBLE PLATFORM TO PROMOTE SECURITY RESEARCH THAT UNCOVERS VULNERABILITIES AND DESIGNS COUNTERMEASURES TOWARD THE AI-ASSISTED UAV PARADIGM. SPECIFICALLY, THIS PROJECT WILL SECURE TWO TYPES OF INSTRUMENTS: (1) QUANTUM OPTIC SINGLE-PHOTON SETUPS, AND (2) ELECTRONIC MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT, WHICH WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO CONDUCT CUTTING EDGE EXPERIMENTS IN ADVANCED UNDERGRADUATE PHYSICS COURSES AND LABORATORY SECTIONS. AN ESTIMATED 80 STUDENTS WILL UTILIZE THE PROJECT-FUNDED EQUIPMENT EACH YEAR. IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING IMPROVED EXPERIENCES IN COURSES INCLUDING MODERN PHYSICS, QUANTUM PHYSICS, AND QUANTUM MECHANICS, THE NEW EQUIPMENT WILL ALSO BE USED BY STUDENT RESEARCHERS IN CSUSM?S SUMMER SCHOLARS PROGRAM AND ENGAGED IN INDEPENDENT RESEARCH PROJECTS WITH FACULTY MENTORS. THE GOALS OF THIS PROJECT ARE TO ENRICH THE LEARNING AND EXPERIENCES OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS BY PROVIDING STATE-OF-THE-ART INSTRUMENTATION TO CONDUCT EXPERIMENTS AND SUPPORT STUDENT LEARNING IN QIST. SPECIFICALLY, FACULTY WILL BE ABLE TO FACILITATE BOTH SINGLE-PHOTON EXPERIMENTS, WHICH WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO ENGAGE WITH AND BETTER UNDERSTAND COMPLEX QUANTUM PROPERTIES AND CONCEPTS. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO SECURE LOW-NOISE ELECTRONICS THAT, TOGETHER WITH AVAILABLE NANOFABRICATED DEVICES AND EXISTING CRYOGENIC SYSTEMS AT CSUSM, WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO TAKE MULTIPLE SILICON QUBIT MEASUREMENTS IN PHYSICS LABORATORY COURSES. THE PROJECT WILL ASSESS THE IMPACT OF THE PROJECT FUNDED EQUIPMENT THROUGH USAGE DATA AND MODIFIED COURSE EVALUATIONS DESIGNED TO EXPLORE STUDENTS? ATTITUDES AND AWARENESS OF QIST. THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY THE HSI PROGRAM, WHICH AIMS TO ENHANCE UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION, BROADEN PARTICIPATION IN STEM, AND INCREASE CAPACITY TO ENGAGE IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF INNOVATIONS TO IMPROVE STEM TEACHING AND LEARNING AT HSIS. THE ARCHITECTURE OF MISSING AND ARCHAIC VARIATION IN HUMAN POPULATION GENOMIC DATA - PROJECT SUMMARY MODERN HUMAN GENOMES ARE MOSAICS OF VARIATION FROM NUMEROUS ARCHAIC NON-HUMAN HOMININS, OFTEN TERMED “GHOST” POPULATIONS. HOWEVER, OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE EVOLUTIONARY HISTORY OF “GHOST” VARIATION IS STILL DEVELOPING. IMPORTANTLY, COMPUTATIONAL METHODS TO ADDRESS MISSING “GHOST” VARIATION ARE STILL NASCENT, AND NOT ACCOUNTING FOR THE PRESENCE OF “GHOSTS” OFTEN LEADS TO ERRONEOUS INFERENCE. HERE I PROPOSE A SERIES OF PROGRAMMATIC DEVELOPMENTS TO ADDRESS INFERENCE OF EVOLUTIONARY HISTORY FROM MODERN HUMAN GENOMES, WHILE ACCOUNTING FOR GENE FLOW FROM ARCHAIC “GHOSTS”. IN AIM 1, I PROPOSE TO DEVELOP A PARALLELIZED STATISTICAL FRAMEWORK FOR ESTIMATING POPULATION GENETIC STRUCTURE FROM MULTI-ALLELIC, MULTI-LOCUS GENOMIC DATA THAT INCORPORATES SEQUENCING AND IMPUTATION ERRORS OF DATA CONSIDERED MISSING DUE TO GENE FLOW FROM ARCHAIC “GHOST” POPULATIONS INTO A MAXIMUM LIKELIHOOD BASED STATISTICAL FRAMEWORK. THIS METHOD WILL BE INCORPORATED INTO A COMPUTATIONALLY EFFICIENT PROGRAM CALLED P-MULTICLUST, A MULTI-THREADED, PARALLELIZED TOOL WHICH EXTENDS THE POPULAR “ADMIXTURE” MODEL INCORPORATED IN TOOLS LIKE STRUCTURE AND ADMIXTURE TO ACCOUNT FOR MISSING MULTI- ALLELIC HUMAN GENOMIC DATA. AIM 2 WILL INVOLVE A TWO-PRONGED APPROACH TO ESTIMATE EVOLUTIONARY HISTORY AND POPULATION STRUCTURE IN THE PRESENCE OF GENE FLOW FROM AN ARCHAIC “GHOST” UNDER THE ISOLATION WITH MIGRATION (IM) MODEL. WE WILL (A) DEVELOP EXTENSIONS TO THE IMA3/IMA2P SUITE OF TOOLS TO INCORPORATE JOINT ESTIMATION OF POPULATION STRUCTURE AND DEMOGRAPHIC HISTORY FROM GENOMIC DATA, AND (B) TRAIN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN DEVELOPING SIMULATION MODELS FOR THE STDPOPSIM CONSORTIUM UNDER TWO IMPORTANT MODELS OF HUMAN HISTORY – (1) ARCHAIC “GHOST” GENE FLOW IN NATIVE AFRICANS, AND (2) MULTIPLE-EPOCHS OF ADMIXTURE INTO ASIANS/OCEANIANS. IN AIM 3, I PROPOSE TO QUANTIFY THE SELECTION LANDSCAPE OF “GHOST” VARIATION ACROSS DIVERSE HUMAN GENOMES DUE TO ANCESTRAL GENE FLOW FROM NOW EXTINCT “GHOST” POPULATIONS. IN THIS AIM, WE WILL FOCUS ON (A) IMPROVEMENTS TO THE MIGSELECT PROGRAM TO QUANTIFY LINKED SELECTION EFFECTS DUE TO GENE FLOW FROM “GHOST” POPULATIONS UNDER THE IM MODEL, AND (B) A LARGER, MORE ENCOMPASSING STUDY OF FUNCTIONAL GENOMIC VARIATION ACROSS DIVERSE HUMAN POPULATIONS INCLUDING HIGH-QUALITY GENOMES FROM AFRICA, SUPPLEMENTED WITH MORE COMPLETE NEANDERTHAL, AND OTHER NON-HUMAN HOMININ GENOMES WHICH WILL HELP US DELINEATE PATTERNS OF HUMAN EVOLUTIONARY HISTORY, AND UNDERSTAND THE FUNCTIONAL CONSEQUENCES OF ARCHAIC GENE FLOW. THESE DISCOVERIES ALSO HAVE DIRECT CONSEQUENCES FOR UNDERSTANDING MODERN HUMAN ANCESTRY, AND DISEASE ALLELE EVOLUTION. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: ELEVATING THE CALCULUS STANDARD OF CARE THROUGH AN INNOVATIVE COLLABORATIVE TESTBED -THIS LEVEL 3 IUSE PROJECT, A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT BETWEEN FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY (FIU), CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SAN MARCOS (CSUSM), CLARK COLLEGE (CC), AND THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA (UVA), AIMS TO IMPROVE TEACHING AND LEARNING IN INTRODUCTORY CALCULUS COURSES. SPECIFICALLY, THE PROJECT ADAPTS AND IMPLEMENTS THE MODELING PRACTICES IN CALCULUS (MPC) APPROACH, WHICH HAS BEEN SHOWN TO SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE LEARNING AND SUCCESS FOR A BROAD COLLECTION OF CALCULUS I STUDENTS AT FIU. AT THE CORE OF MPC IS THE OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO WORK COOPERATIVELY AND DISCUSS KEY MATHEMATICAL IDEAS IN A FACE-TO-FACE, SMALL GROUP SETTING. THE CURRICULUM ENGAGES STUDENTS IN THE PRACTICES OF MATHEMATICIANS, SUPPORTS STUDENTS ARGUMENTATION, AND BUILDS IMPORTANT MATHEMATICAL REASONING AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS. THIS PROJECT IMPLEMENTS MPC AT MULTIPLE SITES ACROSS TWO OVERLAPPING PHASES, FIRST FACILITATING ADOPTION AND IMPLEMENTATION AT CSUSM, CC, AND UVA, AND THEN IDENTIFYING THREE ADDITIONAL PARTNER SITES THAT WILL JOIN THE PROJECT IN ITS SECOND YEAR. CALCULUS REMAINS A KEY COURSE FOR MANY STEM DEGREE PROGRAMS AND CAN REPRESENT A BOTTLENECK FOR MANY STUDENTS. HOW ARE NEW SITES SUCCESSFULLY RECRUITED AND ONBOARDED INTO PROJECT? DATA SOURCES INCLUDE INTERVIEWS, SURVEYS, WEEKLY FACULTY REFLECTIONS, AND SHARED EXAM QUESTIONS ACROSS PROJECT AND NON-PROJECT COURSES. MEETING THE DEMAND FOR QUALIFIED CYBERSECURITY PROFESSIONALS REQUIRES TEACHING BOTH TECHNICAL CYBERSECURITY SKILLS AND DEVELOPING A CYBERSECURITY MINDSET. THE PERIOD PRIOR TO 1996, BEFORE EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS FOR HIV, WAS MARKED BY A WIDE ARRAY OF SCHOLARSHIP ON THE PANDEMIC. HOWEVER, PUBLIC ATTENTION TO HIV/AIDS EXPERIENCED A DECLINE AND FRAGMENTATION AFTER MORE EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS BECAME AVAILABLE ? SOMETIMES WITH THE MISTAKEN RATIONALE THAT THE PANDEMIC WAS OVER (OR AT LEAST WELL-MANAGED) AND COUPLED TO A ?SECOND SILENCE? IN PUBLIC ATTENTION TO AIDS. BIOMEDICAL INNOVATION HAS RESULTED IN TREATMENTS THAT CAN ENABLE A PERSON LIVING WITH HIV TO LIVE A LIFESPAN COMPARABLE TO THAT OF AN HIV-NEGATIVE PERSON. HOWEVER, ANTIRETROVIRAL THERAPIES ARE NOT CURES, THEY COME WITH SIDE EFFECTS, REQUIRE ACCESS TO RESOURCES AND STABILITY TO REMAIN IN CARE (FROM HEALTH INSURANCE TO HOUSING), ARE DEPENDENT ON THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY, AND OVERALL, HAVE NOT ENDED THE PANDEMIC LOCALLY OR GLOBALLY. FOUR DECADES INTO THE PANDEMIC, EVEN AS MANY COUNTRIES PROCLAIM THAT THEY WILL END THEIR HIV/AIDS EPIDEMICS BY 2030, THERE IS NO ACTUAL END IN SIGHT. HIV HAS BECOME A LONG PANDEMIC, ONE THAT IS BOTH EXCEPTIONAL WHILE ALSO OVERLAPPING WITH MANY ONGOING HUMAN RIGHTS, ECONOMIC AND PUBLIC HEALTH CRISES. THIS RCD PROJECT AIMS TO OVERCOME THE INTELLECTUAL FRAGMENTATION THAT ACCOMPANIED THE SECOND SILENCE ON HIV/AIDS IN STS AND ITS CONSTITUENT DISCIPLINES BY CREATING INFRASTRUCTURE TO SUPPORT A SCHOLARLY COMMUNITY AROUND THESE TOPICS. THIS PROJECT WILL ASSEMBLE A PRODUCTIVE RESEARCH COMMUNITY VIA A SERIES OF THREE ANNUAL WORKSHOPS; BY DEVELOPING AN ONLINE FORUM FOR COORDINATION; BY SUPPORTING NEW RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS WITH SMALL GRANTS; AND BY CREATING A ROBUST MENTORSHIP PROGRAM THAT WILL PAIR EARLY CAREER SCHOLARS WITH MORE ESTABLISHED SCHOLARS. THIS PROJECT INVESTIGATES HOW HUMAN CIVILIZATIONS RESPOND, BOTH SUCCESSFULLY AND UNSUCCESSFULLY, TO PRONOUNCED ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES. SPECIFICALLY, THIS RESEARCH ILLUMINATES THE OFTEN-PRECARIOUS RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN AGRARIAN SOCIETIES, AND THEIR ECOLOGICAL SETTINGS OVER THE LONG TERM. PROFOUND ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS ABOUT FOUR THOUSAND YEARS AGO HAS BEEN LINKED WITH MAJOR SOCIETAL DISRUPTIONS ACROSS THE ANCIENT WORLD. TODAY, SOME ECOSYSTEMS ARE WARMING ALMOST TWICE AS FAST AS THE GLOBAL AVERAGE, AND WATER DEMAND IS EXPECTED TO DOUBLE OR TRIPLE IN THE NEXT FEW DECADES, WHICH WILL CONTINUE TO STRESS ALREADY-VULNERABLE ECOSYSTEMS, ECONOMIES, AND SOCIETIES. WITH THE DYNAMIC SENSITIVITY UNDER CONSIDERATION THIS INVESTIGATION OF SOCIAL DECISION MAKING AND AGRARIAN RESPONSES TO ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS IN THE DEEP PAST POTENTIALLY REVEALS FUNDAMENTAL IMPLICATIONS FOR HUMAN RESILIENCE AND SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE IN THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE. THIS PROJECT IS AN INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDY INTEGRATING SOCIAL AND NATURAL SCIENTISTS. SUCH STUDIES ARE PARTICULARLY WELL-SUITED TO APPLYING DEEP TIME PERSPECTIVES TO ELUCIDATE LONG-TERM ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES AND ASSESS HOW AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITIES COPE WITH ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS. COMMUNICATION OF PROJECT RESULTS WILL BE FACILITATED BY ARCHAEOLOGICALLY INFORMED ARTISTIC DEPICTIONS OF ANCIENT LANDSCAPES AND AGRARIAN COMMUNITIES. OUTREACH TO POPULAR AND UNIVERSITY AUDIENCES IN THE UNITED STATES AND BEYOND WILL FOSTER A SENSE OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL STEWARDSHIP, AN APPRECIATION OF DEEP HUMAN HERITAGE, AND AN AWARENESS OF THE VARIED RESPONSES TO ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE IMPLEMENTED BY AGRARIAN SOCIETIES. PROJECT DATA WILL BE ACCESSIONED INTO THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA?S DIGITAL LIBRARY MERRITT REPOSITORY, WHERE IT WILL BE MANAGED BY OPEN CONTEXT, AND AVAILABLE FOR BROAD AUDIENCES TO INVESTIGATE AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES DURING THE RISE AND COLLAPSE OF ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS. PROJECT RESULTS CONTRIBUTE A NEW COMPARATIVE APPROACH FOR THE STUDY OF ANCIENT SOCIAL FLUX ACROSS BROAD GEOGRAPHIC AND TEMPORAL SCALES, WHILE OFFERING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENT AND POPULAR ENGAGEMENT IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH. SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS AND WORKLOADS, ESPECIALLY WITHIN THE DOMAINS OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING (HPC), CLOUD COMPUTING, AND LARGE-SCALE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) MODEL TRAINING, EXERT CONSIDERABLE DEMAND ON COMPUTING RESOURCES, THUS CONTRIBUTING SIGNIFICANTLY TO THE OVERALL CARBON FOOTPRINT. CURRENTLY, THE CARBON EMISSIONS ATTRIBUTED TO THE SOFTWARE INDUSTRY RIVAL THOSE OF THE AVIATION SECTOR, AND THIS TREND IS PROJECTED TO ESCALATE FURTHER BY 2030. THIS PROJECT TARGETS THE CREATION OF SUSTAINABLE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY SOFTWARE BY IDENTIFYING AND SELECTIVELY RESTRUCTURING ENERGY-DRAINING CODE SEGMENTS (KNOWN AS CODE SMELLS) AND ADDRESSING CODING INEFFICIENCIES. THIS INNOVATIVE APPROACH HAS THE POTENTIAL TO YIELD SUBSTANTIAL SAVINGS IN ENERGY CONSUMPTION, REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS, AND MAKE A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE ENVIRONMENT. THE PROJECT ENCOMPASSES A COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAM, FEATURING SCIENCE PROJECTS FOR K-12 STUDENTS, THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE-LEVEL COURSES, MENTORING OF MINORITY AND UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS, AND THE DISSEMINATION OF THE PROJECT OUTCOMES TO THE WIDER SOCIETY. THIS PROJECT FACILITATES SUSTAINABLE AND LOW-CARBON SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH THREE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS: (1) A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF CODE SMELLS AND INVESTIGATION OF THE IMPACT OF THEIR REFACTORING ON APPLICATION ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND CARBON FOOTPRINT; (2) DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL MACHINE-LEARNING MODELS TAILORED TO INTELLIGENTLY AND JUDICIOUSLY GUIDE CODE SMELL REFACTORING WHILE PRIORITIZING ENERGY EFFICIENCY; AND (3) APPLICATION OF THE DEVELOPED MODELS ACROSS A DIVERSE SPECTRUM OF HPC, CLOUD AND AI WORKLOADS, ENABLING ROBUST VALIDATION AND COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION. THE RESEARCH OUTCOMES OF THIS PROJECT WILL REVOLUTIONIZE ENERGY OPTIMIZATION IN SOFTWARE SYSTEMS BY OFFERING A HOLISTIC FRAMEWORK THAT ADDRESSES THE COMPLEX CHALLENGES OF CODE SMELL REFACTORING AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION.
