IN ADDITION TO THE PREVIOUSLY OUTLINED SPECIES, AN INFESTATION OF SQUARROSE KNAPWEED (CENTAUREA VIRGATA VAR. SQUARROSA) HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED IN THE GOSHUTE RANGE THAT IS ADJACENT TO THE ELY BLM DISTRICT BOUNDARY. ENLC WILL ASSIST THE BLM IN INVENTORYING, TREATING AND MONITORING (IF NECESSARY) THE SQUARROSE KNAPWEED INFESTATIONS IF THEY MOVE INTO THE DISTRICT BOUNDARIES, AS WELL AS OTHER NOXIOUS AND NON-NATIVE NUISANCE SPECIES AS NEEDED.

AWARD PURPOSE: THIS PROJECT RESTORES AND PROTECTS NATURAL HABITATS IN EASTERN NEVADA BY REDUCING INVASIVE PLANTS, IMPROVING NATIVE VEGETATION, AND STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS. ITS PURPOSE IS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF SAGEBRUSH, RIPARIAN, AND POSTFIRE LANDSCAPES ACROSS SNAKE AND SPRING VALLEYS BY COMPLETING COORDINATED INVASIVE PLANT CONTROL, ANNUAL GRASS TREATMENTS, AND REVEGETATION. THE PROJECT ALSO SUPPORTS LONGTERM COOPERATION AMONG LANDOWNERS, TRIBES, CONSERVATION GROUPS, AND FEDERAL AND STATE LAND MANAGERS WHO WORK TOGETHER TO CARE FOR PUBLIC AND PRIVATE LANDS.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE PROJECT COMPLETES SURVEYS, TREATMENTS, AND MONITORING ON THOUSANDS OF ACRES EACH YEAR TO CONTROL HARMFUL WEEDS AND INVASIVE ANNUAL GRASSES THAT THREATEN WILDLIFE HABITAT, WATER RESOURCES, AND WORKING LANDS. IT RESTORES VEGETATION THROUGH SEEDING AND PLANTING, MAINTAINS BIOLOGICAL CONTROL SITES, AND SUPPORTS RESEARCH THAT TESTS WAYS TO IMPROVE RESTORATION RESULTS. IT ALSO DELIVERS COMMUNITY-FOCUSED ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING PUBLIC EDUCATION, VOLUNTEER EVENTS, TRAINING FOR PARTNERS, AND COORDINATION ACROSS LOCAL WEED MANAGEMENT GROUPS. THESE ACTIONS TAKE PLACE ON BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE LANDS AND EMPHASIZE SHARED RESPONSIBILITY FOR LONGTERM LAND STEWARDSHIP.EXPECTED DELIVERABLES OR OUTCOMES: THE PROJECT PRODUCES MEASURABLE ECOLOGICAL AND COMMUNITY OUTCOMES. IT REDUCES INFESTATIONS OF INVASIVE PLANTS, LOWERS FIRE RISK BY LIMITING FINE FUELS, AND IMPROVES HABITAT NEEDED BY WILDLIFE. IT RESTORES NATIVE VEGETATION ON LANDS THAT HAVE BURNED, BEEN DISTURBED, OR ARE VULNERABLE TO FUTURE DEGRADATION. THE PROJECT PRODUCES OUTREACH MATERIALS, EDUCATIONAL EVENTS, VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS, AND LOCAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES. IT ALSO DEVELOPS NEW REPORTING TOOLS FOR LOCAL PARTNERS, INSTALLS INTERPRETIVE SIGNS AND TRAIL FEATURES, AND SUPPORTS SCIENTIFIC STUDIES THAT STRENGTHEN FUTURE RESTORATION WORK. THESE OUTCOMES COLLECTIVELY INCREASE THE RESILIENCE OF THE REGIONS LANDSCAPES AND HELP ENSURE THAT RESTORATION INVESTMENTS CONTINUE TO SUCCEED OVER TIME.INTENDED BENEFICIARIES: THE PROJECT BENEFITS A WIDE RANGE OF PEOPLE AND COMMUNITIES. LOCAL LANDOWNERS GAIN SUPPORT TO MANAGE INVASIVE SPECIES AND IMPROVE THEIR LANDS. RESIDENTS AND VISITORS BENEFIT FROM HEALTHIER LANDSCAPES, SAFER CONDITIONS, AND IMPROVED OPPORTUNITIES FOR RECREATION AND WILDLIFE VIEWING. TRIBAL COMMUNITIES, LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS, AND VOLUNTEERS GAIN TRAINING, EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES, AND OPPORTUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN RESTORATION. BASIN AND RANGE NATIONAL MONUMENT BARNM IS AN AREA THAT SPANS THE TRANSITION BETWEEN THE MOJAVE DESERT AND THE SAGEBRUSH STEPPE OF THE GREAT BASIN REGION IT IS ONE OF THE LARGEST, MOST ECOLOGICALLY DIVERSE LANDSCAPES IN THE GREAT BASIN REGION, ENCOMPASSING APPROXIMATELY 704,000 ACRES AND PROVIDING HABITAT CONNECTIVITY AND MIGRATION CORRIDORS FOR A WIDE VARIETY OF ANIMAL SPECIES AND AFFORDING RESEARCHERS THE ABILITY TO CONDUCT STUDIES OVER BROAD SPATIAL SCALES THE 2015 PRESIDENTIAL PROCLAMATION FOR BARNM STATES THAT MANY BAT SPECIES RESIDE IN THE BASIN AND RANGE AREA S CAVES AND USE ITS LOWLANDS FOR FORAGING HOWEVER, THERE HAVE BEEN NO BAT STUDIES CONDUCTED IN THIS AREA TO DATE UTILIZING A ROBUST SAMPLING DESIGN, THIS PROJECT PROPOSES TO NOT ONLY IDENTIFY ALL BAT SPECIES USING BARNM LANDS, DURING THE 5 YEAR EFFORT, BUT ALSO OFFER SUBSTANTIAL INSIGHT INTO HABITATS USED BY BAT SPECIES AND POTENTIALLY INSIGHT INTO RECREATION IMPACTS ON BATS USING BARNM ONCE THE DATA HAS BEEN COLLECTED AND ANALYZED, PUBLIC OUTREACH EFFORTS WILL FOLLOW, INCLUDING CREATING PRINTED EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS FOR THE CALIENTE FIELD OFFICE OUTLINING BAT SPECIES PRESENT IN BARNM, AS WELL AS HOSTING BOOTHS AT VARIOUS PUBLIC EVENTS IN ALAMO, NV AND CALIENTE, NV SHOWCASING BARNM BAT SPECIES, THEIR NATURAL HISTORIES AND PROVIDING EFFORTS TO DISPEL MYTHS ASSOCIATED WITH BATS THE PROPOSED PROJECT IS INTENDED TO BENEFIT THE ELY DISTRICT BLM OFFICE AND NDOW, AS WELL AS THE PUBLIC DUE TO THE FACT THAT THIS PROJECT WILL ENRICH THE CURRENT DATA WE HAVE ON BAT SPECIES AND ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE STATE AND WILL ASSIST IN DISPELLING NEGATIVE MYTHS AND STEREOTYPES ABOUT BATS PROPOSED SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES INCLUDE ANALYSIS OF STATIONARY ACOUSTIC DATA COLLECTED WITHIN BARNM AS PART OF PROPOSED ACTIVITIES, AS WELL AS OUTREACH EFFORTS ON BEHALF OF ENLC
