DESCRIPTION:THE TOLEDO ZOO WILL CONSTRUCT A PARKING LOT BIORETENTION PROJECT TO MANAGE STORMWATER RUNOFF, SEQUESTER CARBON, AND PROVIDE HABITAT FOR LOCAL POLLINATORS. THE NEW PARKING LOT WILL HAVE TWO BIORETENTION BASINS AND TWO BIOSWALES WITH NATIVE PLANTINGS THAT WILL FILTER 7.2 MILLION GALLONS OF STORMWATER RUNOFF ANNUALLY. THIS STORMWATER WOULD OTHERWISE FLOW DIRECTLY INTO THE STORM SEWER SYSTEM AND ULTIMATELY TO LAKE ERIE. THE PROJECT IS DESIGNED AS AN EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR GUESTS TO LEARN ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION ISSUES. ACTIVITIES:THIS PROJECT WILL CONVERT A BROWNFIELD INTO A PARKING LOT THAT WILL MANAGE STORMWATER RUNOFF, SEQUESTER CARBON, AND PROVIDE HABITAT FOR POLLINATORS.

THE NORTHERN POPULATION SEGMENT OF COPPERBELLY WATERSNAKES IS FEDERALLY THREATENED AND BLANDING S TURTLES ARE THREATENED IN THE STATE OF OHIO AND ARE CURRENTLY UNDER CONSIDERATION FOR LISTING UNDER THE U S ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT RECENT SURVEYS FOR THESE SPECIES HAVE HIGHLIGHTED DECLINING POPULATIONS AND IDENTIFIED AREAS WHERE MANAGEMENT AND RECOVERY EFFORTS WOULD BE BENEFICIAL FURTHERMORE, CONSERVATION AND RECOVERY PLANS FOR THESE SPECIES HAVE RECOMMENDED REPATRIATION AS A POTENTIAL MEANS OF STABILIZING DECLINING POPULATIONS USING A DECISION MAKING FRAMEWORK, WE IDENTIFIED SITES WITHIN THE TARGET SPECIES HISTORIC RANGE THAT HAD UNDERGONE RECENT HABITAT RESTORATION, MESOPREDATOR CONTROL, AND COULD BENEFIT FROM AUGMENTATION AND HEAD STARTING THIS WORK WOULD CONTINUE AUGMENTATION OF BLANDING S TURTLES AT UP TO THREE SITES AND BE THE FIRST INSTANCE OF A CAPTIVE PROPAGATION AND RELEASE PROGRAM FOR COPPERBELLY WATERSNAKES AT THE ONLY KNOWN, EXTANT POPULATION IN OHIO THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF HEAD STARTING THESE SPECIES IS TO AID IN RECOVERY EFFORTS BY AUGMENTING DECLINING POPULATIONS, SUCH THAT THEY BECOME SELF SUSTAINING THE GOALS OF THIS PROPOSAL ARE 1 ESTABLISH SNAKES AND REFINE TURTLES HUSBANDRY METHODS, AND 2 DETERMINE THE SHORT TERM SUCCESS OF CAPTIVE PROPAGATION AND HEAD STARTING EFFORTS BY MONITORING POST RELEASE MOVEMENTS, HABITAT USE, GROWTH, AND SURVIVAL DATA COLLECTED FROM THIS PROPOSAL WILL BE USED TO INFORM CONSERVATION PLANNING, CAPTIVE REARING EFFORTS, POPULATION VIABILITY ANALYSES, AND STOCKING NUMBERS LONG TERM, THE ANIMALS RELEASED FROM THIS PROPOSAL WILL HELP STABILIZE LOCAL POPULATIONS AND PREVENT EXTIRPATIONS WE ANTICIPATE THIS RESEARCH YIELDING RESULTS THAT WILL INFLUENCE CAPTIVE REARING AND RELEASE EFFORTS OF THREATENED REPTILES

HUSBRANDY AND BREEDING PROTOCOLS WERE DEVELOPED THROUGH WORKING WITH THE EYED-BROWN, SATYRODES EURYDICE, AND IMPLEMENTED WITH THE MSB. IN A BIO-SECURE REARING FACILITY, THE TOLEDO ZOO MAINTAINS A CAPTIVE BREEDING POPULATION OF MSBS AS WELL AS REARS MSBS FROM EGG TO ADULT FOR AUGMENTATION AND REINTRODUCTIONS.THESE FUNDS WILL ALLOW TOLEDO ZOO TO MAINTAIN THE CAPTIVE BREEDING POPULATION OF MITCHELL'S SATYRS AS WELL AS S UPPORT THEIR EFFORTS TO BREED AND REAR BUTTERFLIES FROM EGG TO ADULT FOR RELEASE FOR THE 2022 FIELD SEASON. THE GOAL IS TO AUGMENT MITCHELL'S SATYR POPULATIONS AS WELL AS REINTRODUCE MITCHELL'S SATYRS TO NEW SITES TO REDUCE THE RISK OF EXTINCTION OF THIS ENDANGERED ANIMAL.
