THIS EDA INVESTMENT SUPPORTS GOSHEN COLLEGE WITH EXPANDING ITS NURSING SCHOOL'S ADULT WORKFORCE TRAINING PROGRAM AND FILLING A CRITICAL SHORTAGE IN THE REGION'S SKILLED NURSING WORKFORCE IN ELKHART COUTY, INDIANA. THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC DEMONSTRATED THE IMPORTANCE OF SKILLED NURSES AND HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS IN AN EMERGENCY. AS A REGIONAL WORKFORCE TRAINING PROVIDER FOR THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY, GOSHEN COLLEGE IS POSITIONED TO HELP MAKE THE REGION'S WORKFORCE READY FOR FUTURE HEALTHCARE EMERGENCIES, WHICH WILL INCREASE THE REGION'S RESILIENCY IN THE FACE OF FUTURE HEALTH-RELATED CRISES. THE IMPROVEMENTS TO WESTLAWN HALL WILL INCLUDE 18,000 SQUARE FEET OF CLASSROOMS, SIMULATION ROOMS AND EXAM ROOMS FOR HIGH-FIDELITY SIMULATION TRAINING AS WELL AS A LARGE SKILLS LAB AND TEACHING AREA. THE INCREASED ENROLLMENT IN THE SCHOOL'S NURSING PROGRAM IS EXPECTED TO HELP CREATE IN-DEMAND JOBS IN THE REGION, WHICH WILL ASSIST LOCAL BUSINESS EXPANSIONS AND RECRUITMENT OF NEW BUSINESSES TO THE COMMUNITY.

A GROWING NUMBER OF STEM COURSES REQUIRE CLOUD COMPUTING RESOURCES OR HOSTED APPLICATIONS, CREATING A CRITICAL NEED FOR FASTER CONNECTIVITY. THE PRIOR CAMPUS NETWORK ALSO LACKED REDUNDANCY AND SUFFICIENT TOOLS TO PRIORITIZE ACADEMIC DATA TRAFFIC. WITH THE NETWORK UPGRADE, FACULTY AND STUDENTS CAN ADOPT DATA-DRIVEN STEM APPLICATIONS AND COLLECT AND TRANSFER LARGE DATA SETS. OTHER BENEFITS INCLUDE NETWORK REDUNDANCY TO ELIMINATE SINGLE POINTS OF FAILURE, THE ABILITY TO PRIORITIZE STEM NETWORK TRAFFIC, AND A FASTER CONNECTION TO INDIANA?S EXTERNAL RESEARCH NETWORK. THE IMPROVED STEM RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES PROVIDED TO STUDENTS WILL INCREASE THEIR PARTICIPATION IN STEM AND THEIR PREPARATION FOR THE FUTURE STEM WORKFORCE. THE NETWORK UPGRADES DIRECTLY ENABLE GOSHEN?S STEM RESEARCH AND TEACHING PROGRAMS, INCLUDING COMPUTER SCIENCE, BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND BIOCHEMISTRY, PHYSICS, ENGINEERING PHYSICS, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, MATHEMATICS, AND ENVIRONMENTAL AND MARINE SCIENCE. THE PROJECT OBJECTIVES ARE TO (1) ESTABLISH A GEO-REDUNDANT NETWORK IMPLEMENTATION TO ELIMINATE SINGLE POINTS OF FAILURE; (2) IMPLEMENT A DATA TRANSFER NODE TO ISOLATE STEM DATA TRANSFERS, INCREASE THE DATA TRANSFER SPEED FROM 2 TO 8 GIGABITS PER SECOND (GBPS), AND ADD 144 TERABYTES STORAGE; AND (3) INCREASE CONNECTION SPEED TO THE INDIANA I-LIGHT RESEARCH NETWORK FROM 2 TO 10 GBPS. COLLEGE STAFF, ADMINISTRATION, AND STEM FACULTY COLLABORATIVELY DESIGNED THE CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADE PLAN, ENSURING THAT THE NETWORKING UPGRADES ARE FEASIBLE, SUSTAINABLE, AND ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF COLLEGE STEM FACULTY AND STUDENTS. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE NOT PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.

THE GRANTS TO REDUCE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, DATING VIOLENCE, SEXUAL ASSAULT, AND STALKING ON CAMPUS PROGRAM (CAMPUS PROGRAM) IS AUTHORIZED BY 34 U.S.C. § 20125. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION TO ESTABLISH MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES TO COMBAT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, DATING VIOLENCE, SEXUAL ASSAULT, AND STALKING ON CAMPUSES. THESE COMPREHENSIVE EFFORTS ARE DESIGNED TO ENHANCE VICTIM SERVICES, IMPLEMENT PREVENTION AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS, AND DEVELOP AND STRENGTHEN SECURITY AND INVESTIGATION STRATEGIES IN ORDER TO PREVENT, PROSECUTE, AND RESPOND TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, DATING VIOLENCE, SEXUAL ASSAULT, AND STALKING. THE CAMPUS PROGRAM SUPPORTS ACTIVITIES THAT DEVELOP CAMPUS-BASED COORDINATED RESPONSES THAT INCLUDE CAMPUS VICTIM SERVICES, LAW ENFORCEMENT, HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS, HOUSING OFFICIALS, ADMINISTRATORS, STUDENT LEADERS, FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS, STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS, AND DISCIPLINARY BOARDS, AND THAT ENHANCE VICTIM SAFETY AND ASSISTANCE AND HOLD OFFENDERS ACCOUNTABLE. TO BE EFFECTIVE, THESE RESPONSES MUST BE LINKED TO LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, PROSECUTORS’ OFFICES, COURTS, AND NONPROFIT, NONGOVERNMENTAL VICTIM ADVOCACY AND VICTIM SERVICES ORGANIZATIONS. THE FUNDED INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PROJECT’S CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND VICTIM SERVICE PARTNERS, WILL IMPLEMENT A COMPREHENSIVE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN PROJECT ON CAMPUS. THROUGH THIS INITIAL AWARD, THE COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIP WILL: 1) CREATE A COORDINATED COMMUNITY RESPONSE TEAM TO OVERSEE ALL PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION ACTIVITIES; 2) PROVIDE PREVENTION PROGRAMMING, INCLUDING BYSTANDER INTERVENTION TO ALL STUDENTS ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, DATING VIOLENCE, SEXUAL ASSAULT AND STALKING; 3) PROVIDE ONGOING TRAINING TO ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT ON HOW TO EFFECTIVELY RESPOND TO THESE CRIMES; 4) PROVIDE ACCESS TO 24-HOUR CONFIDENTIAL VICTIM SERVICES AND ADVOCACY; AND 5) CONDUCT ONGOING TRAINING TO ALL PERSONNEL IN THE CAMPUS DISCIPLINARY PROCESS.
