COMMUNITY PROJECT FUNDING/CONGRESSIONALLY DIRECTED SPENDING - CONSTRUCTION - SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY (SXU) PLANS TO IMPROVE ITS NEW HEALTH AND WELLNESS CORRIDOR ON WEST 103RD STREET IN CHICAGO, RENOVATING OFFICE SPACE TO EXPAND OFFERINGS TO INCLUDE COMMUNITY HEALTH AND WELLNESS FOR CHICAGO’S SOUTHWEST SIDE AND SURROUNDING SUBURBS-- INCLUDING PERSONAL TRAINING, GROUP CLASSES, WORKSHOPS ON PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH TOPICS, TESTING, EVALUATIONS, AND NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING. THE WELLNESS CENTER WILL BE LOCATED IN RENOVATED OFFICE SPACE LOCATED BETWEEN THE UNIVERSITY’S EXISTING HEALTH AND COUNSELING CENTERS. THE UNIVERSITY LAUNCHED THE WELLNESS CENTER IN EARLY MAY 2023. THIS PROJECT WILL INCLUDE ENHANCEMENTS TO THE SPACE, INCLUDING THE ADDITION OF INTERIOR, ADA ACCESSIBLE DOORWAYS TO THE INTERIOR OF THE SPACE, CONNECTING THE HEALTH CENTER, WELLNESS CENTER AND COUNSELING CENTER THROUGH AN INTERIOR CORRIDOR. ADDITIONALLY, FUNDS WILL BE USED TO PURCHASE MOVABLE EQUIPMENT FOR THE WELLNESS CENTER TO ENHANCE THE WELLNESS CENTER’S CAPACITY TO FURNISH COMMUNITY HEALTH SERVICES, INCLUDING PERSONAL TRAINING AND NUTRITION AND WELLNESS COUNSELING. SXU IS A COMMUNITY ANCHOR, AND THIS PROJECT BUILDS ON ITS STRATEGIC PLANNING GOAL OF CONNECTING EVEN MORE WITH CHICAGO'S SOUTHWEST SIDE AND SURROUNDING SUBURBS TO PROVIDE SERVICES AND IMPROVE INDIVIDUAL WELL-BEING FOR THE COMMUNITY HEALTH AND WELLNESS NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE OF IL-03 AND SURROUNDING AREAS. THE SPACE WILL ALSO PROVIDE HANDS-ON LEARNING AND CLINICAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR SXU'S NURSING AND EXERCISE SCIENCE STUDENTS.
