BENEDICTINE UNIVERSITY STEM SCHOLARS -THIS PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE NATIONAL NEED FOR WELL-EDUCATED SCIENTISTS, MATHEMATICIANS, ENGINEERS, AND TECHNICIANS BY SUPPORTING THE RETENTION AND GRADUATION OF HIGH-ACHIEVING, LOW-INCOME STUDENTS WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED AT BENEDICTINE UNIVERSITY. A TOTAL OF 50 SCHOLARS PURSUING BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREES IN CHEMISTRY, COMPUTER AND INFORMATION SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES, AND PHYSICS WILL RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS AVERAGING $7,637 ANNUALLY FOR UP TO FIVE YEARS. SCHOLARS WILL RECEIVE FACULTY AND PEER MENTORING AND THE PROJECT WILL BUILD STRONG SCHOLAR CONNECTIONS THROUGH A TAILORED SCHEDULE THAT INTENDS TO FORM THEM INTO A COHORT THROUGH ENROLLMENT IN DESIGNATED, EXCLUSIVE SECTIONS OF A FRESHMAN SEMINAR COURSE FOCUSED ON NAVIGATING THE NEW CHALLENGES OF BEING A COLLEGE STUDENT. COHORTS WILL BE MAINTAINED AND STRENGTHENED THROUGH ENROLLMENT OF THESE STUDENTS IN DESIGNATED SECTIONS OF CHALLENGING FIRST YEAR SCIENCE AND MATH COURSES. STUDENTS WILL CONTINUE TO BUILD CONNECTIONS WHILE TAKING ON LEADERSHIP ROLES, ACTING AS PEER MENTORS, AS LEARNING ASSISTANTS IN CHALLENGING STEM COURSES, AND AS LEADERS IN EXTRACURRICULAR CLUBS. ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR SCHOLARS WILL INCLUDE A SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE PROGRAM AND THE UNIVERSITY. THE OVERALL GOAL OF THIS TRACK 1 SCHOLARSHIPS IN STEM PROJECT IS TO INCREASE STEM DEGREE COMPLETION OF ACADEMICALLY TALENTED, LOW-INCOME UNDERGRADUATES WITH DEMONSTRATED FINANCIAL NEED. THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT NATIONAL NEED TO GROW THE STEM WORKFORCE AND NURTURE KEY TALENT THAT WILL ENSURE ECONOMIC COMPETITIVENESS AND PROVIDE DOMESTIC LEADERSHIP ACROSS CRITICAL SECTORS. THIS PROJECT DIRECTLY SPEAKS TO THIS NEED BY SUPPORTING STEM STUDENT SUCCESS, WHICH WILL STRENGTHEN THE WORKFORCE IN KEY AREAS OF NEED. THE PROJECT WILL BE ASSESSED BY AN EXPERIENCED EVALUATOR THAT WILL MONITOR STUDENT SUCCESS OUTCOMES AND ANALYZE STUDENT EXPERIENCES, AND THE DATA GENERATED WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE KNOWLEDGE BASE REGARDING EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT TALENTED, LOW-INCOME STUDENTS IN STEM. THE EFFECTS OF LIFE-LONG EXPOSURE TO LOW DOSES OF BISPHENOL A ON THE DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF VOCAL PATHWAYS IN X. LAEVIS - PROJECT SUMMARY ENDOCRINE DISRUPTING CHEMICALS (EDCS) ARE KNOWN HAZARDS WHICH ARE STILL PREVALENT IN THE ENVIRONMENT AND IN THE HUMAN HOME. BISPHENOL A (BPA) IS A KNOWN EDC FOUND IN COMMON ITEMS FROM PLASTIC TO PAPER RECEIPTS. RECENT EVIDENCE SUGGESTS THAT BPA IS PRESENT IN AMERICANS AT LEVELS HIGH ENOUGH TO CAUSE DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS ON LANGUAGE ACQUISITION IN MALE, HUMAN CHILDREN. THOUGH SUCH LEVELS ARE CONSIDERED SAFE FOR ACUTE, ADULT EXPOSURE, THE IMPACT OF LONG-TERM, LOW-DOSE EXPOSURE TO EDCS DURING DEVELOPMENT IS AN UNDERSTUDIED PHENOMENON WITH POTENTIALLY SERIOUS IMPACTS ON HUMAN HEALTH. THE AIMS OF THIS STUDY ARE TO: 1) TO TRACK THE IMPACT OF LOW-DOSE BPA EXPOSURE ACROSS DEVELOPMENT INTO ADULTHOOD, AND 2) TO IDENTIFY THE MECHANISMS UNDERLYING VOCAL DEFICITS CAUSED BY ENDOCRINE DISRUPTION. THE PROPOSED STUDIES INCLUDE IN VIVO ANALYSES OF JUVENILE DEVELOPMENT AND BEHAVIOR AS THEY TRANSITION INTO ADULT VOCAL BEHAVIOR PATTERNS. THE IN VIVO WORK IS COMPLEMENTED WITH IN VITRO ANALYSIS OF THE LARYNX AND THE NEURAL STRUCTURES WITHIN THE BRAIN THAT DRIVE VOCALIZATION. THESE STUDIES UTILIZE THE SOUTH AFRICAN CLAWED FROG, XENOPUS LAEVIS, AS A MODEL ORGANISM. THE MECHANISMS DRIVING X. LAEVIS VOCALIZATION PATTERNS ARE WELL-STUDIED, AND THEIR VOCAL BEHAVIORS ARE VARIED BUT NOT COMPLEX. X. LAEVIS PRODUCE AT LEAST SEVEN DIFFERENT TYPES OF VOCALIZATION; SOME ARE MALE-SPECIFIC, SOME ARE FEMALE-SPECIFIC, AND ALL ARE USED IN SPECIFIC SOCIAL CONTEXTS. THE VARIATION IS VOCAL PATTERNS IS BALANCED BY THE FACT THAT THE CALLS ARE INNATE AND DO NOT NEED TO BE LEARNED. XENOPUS VOCAL BEHAVIOR IS EASILY QUANTIFIED. CALLS HAVE DISTINCT FEATURES WHICH MAKE THEM EASILY COUNTED AS DISTINCT UNITS. EACH CALL IS ALSO COMPOSED OF SOUNDS THAT HAVE DISTINCT TEMPORAL AND SPECTRAL FEATURES WHICH CAN ALSO BE QUANTIFIED FOR COMPARISONS. THE TEMPORAL AND SPECTRAL COMPONENTS OF VOCALIZATIONS ARE GENERATED BY THE VOCAL PATTERN GENERATOR IN THE BRAIN AND THE RESONANCE STRUCTURES WITHIN THE LARYNX (RESPECTIVELY,) AND BOTH STRUCTURES HAVE ROBUST IN VITRO PREPARATIONS THAT ALLOW FOR MECHANISTIC STUDY. THUS, THE X. LAEVIS VOCAL SYSTEM IS WELL SUITED FOR STUDIES OF LANGUAGE DISRUPTION BY EDCS LIKE BPA, BECAUSE ABERRATIONS ARE EASILY IDENTIFIED AND PROXIMAL CAUSES CAN BE DIRECTLY INVESTIGATED. THIS INVESTIGATION WILL PROVIDE INSIGHT HOW BPA IMPACTS LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT, ALLOWING US TO IDENTIFY POTENTIAL TARGETS FOR SPEECH THERAPY AS WELL AS HIGHLIGHTING THE POTENTIAL HAZARDS OF LONG-TERM, LOW-DOSE EXPOSURE TO EDCS.

BENU RECOGNIZES THAT HIRING AND RETAINING DIVERSE FACULTY IS IMPORTANT IN EDUCATION AND MENTORSHIP OF THE GROWING DIVERSE STUDENT POPULATION AND THEIR SUCCESS IN STEM; HOWEVER, A LOW NUMBER OF DIVERSE STEM FACULTY, ESPECIALLY AT SMALL, PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTIONS, CARRY ADDITIONAL ?UNWRITTEN? SERVICE RESULTING IN AN IMBALANCE SKEWED TOWARDS SERVICE RATHER THAN SCHOLARSHIP. EAGLES AIMS TO EVALUATE THE PROCESSES BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER BENU STEM FACULTY ARE HIRED THROUGH COLLECTION OF FACULTY PERCEPTIONS REGARDING CURRENT HIRING, PROMOTION PROCESS, AND CAREER FLEXIBILITY POLICIES TO IDENTIFY SIGNIFICANT FACTORS THAT CAN DETER SUCCESSFUL HIRING AND ADVANCEMENT. IN COLLABORATION WITH ADVANCE NETWORKS AND LEADERSHIP, THIS PROJECT AIMS TO DEVELOP STRATEGIES AND GUIDELINES ON CAREER FLEXIBILITY, HIRING, AND RETENTION THAT CAN BETTER ACCOUNT FOR THE EQUITABLE DISTRIBUTION OF SERVICE EXPECTED OF THE LOW PERCENTAGE OF DIVERSE FACULTY AT SMALL, PRIMARILY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTIONS. THE GOAL OF THIS ADVANCE CATALYST PROJECT IS TO ADDRESS THESE INEQUITIES WITHIN BENU STEM BY UNDERTAKING AN EXTENSIVE INSTITUTIONAL ASSESSMENT THAT WILL GUIDE A DATA-DRIVEN STRATEGIC PLAN TO 1) INCREASE INCLUSIVE HIRING POLICIES AND PRACTICES, 2) INCREASE AND IMPROVE FACULTY CAREER FLEXIBILITY, AND 3) PROMOTE LEADERSHIP ADVANCEMENT FOR MARGINALIZED GROUPS IN STEM (FEMALE, PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES, PERSONS WHO IDENTIFY AS LGBTQ+, AND PEERS). OUR GOAL IS TO RECRUIT, RETAIN, MENTOR AND TRAINTEN ACADEMICALLY QUALIFIED JUNIORS FROM GROUPS HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN USDA MISSION AREAS, AND SEE THEM TO COMPLETION OF THE B.S. IN NUTRITION AND DIETETICS AT BENU. FIVE SCHOLARS WILL BE SELECTED FROM BENU;FIVE SCHOLARS WILL BE RECRUITED AS TRANSFERS FROM HARPER.THROUGH COLLABORATION WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND STUDY ABROAD, SCHOLARS WILL BECOME LEADERS IN UNDERSTANDING AND IMPROVING NUTRITION AS A SOCIAL DETERMINANT OF HEATH. SCHOLARS WILL PARTICIPATE IN A PRACTICUM BY SERVING THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY, RECEIVING LEADERSHIP TRAINING AND THEN COLLABORATIVELY DEVELOP A PAY IT FORWARD COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT TO POSITIVELY IMPACT A COMMUNITY IN NEED. TO ACCOMPLISH PROGRAM OBJECTIVES AND ENABLE SCHOLAR SUCCESS, THE PROJECT WILL INCLUDE ACADEMIC ADVISING, TUTORING, GRE AND RDN EXAM PREPARATION, PERSONAL GRADUATE STUDENT MENTORING, LEARNING COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION, LEADERSHIP SEMINAR SERIES, AND PARTICIPATION IN DIRECTOR LED FOCUS GROUPS. WE WILL ASSESS QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE OUTCOMES OF THIS PROJECT AND CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THESE SCHOLARS TO SOLICIT FEEDBACK AFTER COMPLETION OF OUR PROGRAM.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE IMPROVING THE ORGANIZATIONAL EFFICIENCY AND CAPACITY OF COLLECTIONS STORAGE SPACE BY UPGRADING SPECIMEN SHELVING AND CABINETRY; CONDUCTING AN INVENTORY OF THE RESEARCH COLLECTION; COMPLETING CONDITION REPORTS AND UPDATING INFORMATION IN THE COLLECTIONS DATABASE; PHOTOGRAPHING UP TO 4,500 RESEARCH SPECIMENS AND PROVIDING PUBLIC ACCESS BY LAUNCHING A WEBSITE WITH A SEARCHABLE DATABASE. CONFERENCE: RESEARCH, MENTORSHIP, AND COMMUNITY FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE UNDERREPRESENTED ALGEBRAISTS -THIS AWARD WILL SUPPORT THE CONFERENCE RESEARCH, MENTORSHIP, AND COMMUNITY FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE UNDER-REPRESENTED ALGEBRAISTS TO BE HELD AT BENEDICTINE UNIVERSITY ON MAY 31 AND JUNE 1, 2025. RECENT REPORTS FROM THE SCIENTIFIC AND MATHEMATICS COMMUNITIES HAVE HIGHLIGHTED A LARGE GAP BETWEEN OBTAINING A BACHELOR'S DEGREE AND A PHD FOR WOMEN AND MINORITIZED POPULATIONS, ESPECIALLY IN ALGEBRA AND RELATED FIELDS. THIS CONFERENCE AIMS TO ADDRESS THIS DISPARITY BY PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR POTENTIAL RESEARCHERS TO ENGAGE WITH CURRENT ALGEBRA RESEARCH. IT WILL GENERATE AND SHARE ACTIONABLE IDEAS FOR MEANINGFUL MENTORSHIP AND COMMUNITY-BUILDING, HELPING TO BUILD BRIDGES TO ADVANCED STUDY. PARTICIPANTS WILL STRENGTHEN THEIR PROFESSIONAL NETWORKS, ENHANCE THEIR SCHOLARSHIP, AND BUILD MENTORING RELATIONSHIPS ACROSS ALL LEVELS: UNDERGRADUATE, GRADUATE, JUNIOR FACULTY, AND SENIOR FACULTY. THE CONFERENCE WILL SERVE AS A CATALYST FOR ACTION, INSPIRING PARTICIPANTS TO BECOME INNOVATORS, CONTRIBUTORS, AND IMPACTFUL PARTIES FOR OTHERS. THIS CONFERENCE HAS THREE MAJOR THEMES: MENTORING AND TRANSITIONING ACROSS THE PROFESSION; BELONGINGNESS IN ALGEBRA, OPENING THE COMMUNITY, AND SUPPORTING NEW RESEARCHERS; AND INNOVATION AND IMPACT FOR FUTURE RESEARCHER. TO ADDRESS THESE TOPICS, THE CONFERENCE WILL FEATURE CURRENT AND FUTURE RESEARCHERS IN ALGEBRA AND RELATED FIELDS FROM TYPICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS BY SHARING RESEARCH, PROVIDING NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES, AND HIGHLIGHTING MENTORING ACROSS ALL LEVELS THROUGH STRUCTURED TALKS, ROUND TABLES, AND PANELS. IN ADDITION, THE CONFERENCE WILL CREATE A MODEL WITH TOOLS AND MATERIALS FOR SIMILARLY SIZED CONFERENCES TO BE HOSTED AT OTHER INSTITUTIONS TO BROADEN IMPACT AND PARTICIPATION.
