SWIC SEEKS TO CONTINUE SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY IT SERVES BY APPLYING FOR THE RENEWAL GRANT (YEAR 1 OF 3) FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 2019-2020 FOR THE SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM (SCP) GRANT PROVIDED BY THE CORPORATION FOR NATIONAL AND COMMUNITY SERVICE (CNCS). IF GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE AWARDED THIS RENEWAL GRANT, SWIC SCP WILL EXCEED THE REQUESTED 82 VOLUNTEER SERVICE YEARS (VSY), AND PLACE 110 VOLUNTEERS IN SERVICE ACTIVITIES THAT WILL ASSIST OLDER ADULTS, THOSE WITH DISABILITIES AND VETERANS NEEDING SUPPORTIVE SERVICES, TO CONTINUE LIVING INDEPENDENTLY. CAREGIVERS WILL ALSO RECEIVE RESPITE FROM THE COMPANIONS' SUPPORT, IMPROVING THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE WITH VALUABLE SOCIAL RESOURCES AND EDUCATION. IN ALIGNMENT WITH THE CNCS STRATEGIC PLAN, SWIC SCP HAS PRIORITIZED THE HEALTHY FUTURES FOCUS AREA BECAUSE OF THE DEMONSTRATED COMMUNITY NEED FROM THE IL DEPARTMENT ON AGING (IDOA) AND LOCAL AREA AGENCY ON AGING, AGESMART COMMUNITY RESOURCES, FOR SUPPORT OF INDEPENDENT LIVING AND RESPITE IN THE COUNTIES IT SERVES: MADISON, MONROE, RANDOLPH AND ST. CLAIR. THROUGH A SUPPORTIVE PARTNERSHIP OF 9 VOLUNTEER STATIONS, SENIOR COMPANIONS WILL CARRY OUT SERVICE ACTIVITIES SUCH AS SOCIALIZATION AND IN HOME SUPPORTS BY PROVIDING TRANSPORTATION TO APPOINTMENTS, MAKING A MEAL AND REMINDING THE CLIENT TO TAKE THEIR MEDICATIONS. FOR THE FIRST YEAR OF THIS THREE-YEAR GRANT, THE TARGET OUTCOME IS TO SUPPORT 230 OR MORE AT RISK HOME-BOUND AND ISOLATED SENIORS, DISABLED PERSONS, VETERANS AND CAREGIVERS. SWIC IS REQUESTING THE FEDERAL INVESTMENT OF $393,160.00 WHICH WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY $137,925.00 OF LOCAL FUNDING AND $92,299.00 FROM THE STATE OF IL. THERE ARE THREE PRIMARY GOALS FOR THIS PROJECT: (1) CREATE A BEHAVIORAL HEALTH COALITION (BHC) THAT WILL PROVIDE ADDITIONAL MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT FOR YOUNG ADULTS AND TRAINING AND ADVOCACY FOR LOCAL AGENCIES, (2) INCREASE OUTREACH AND EDUCATIONAL AND SCREENING PROGRAMS FOR SUICIDE AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION, AND (3) ASSESS THE MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE CLIMATE ON CAMPUS AND INFORM PRACTICE ACCORDINGLY. EMPOWER HAS NINE OBJECTIVES, THE BROAD ACTIVITIES OF WHICH ARE AS FOLLOWS: CONVENE A GROUP OF STAKEHOLDERS AND CREATE A BHC; CONDUCT VOLUNTARY SCREENINGS AND ASSESSMENTS; PROVIDE AND ATTEND TRAININGS; CONDUCT WELLNESS ACTIVITIES VIA EMPOWER AND THE TRUE BLUE TOOLKIT (A CO-CURRICULAR CAMPUS WELLNESS PROGRAM); CONDUCT OUTREACH TO STUDENT ATHLETES AND COACHES AS WELL AS LGBTQ+, BIPOC, INTERNATIONAL, AND/OR LOW-INCOME/FIRST GENERATION STUDENTS; DEVELOP OR IDENTIFY AND DISTRIBUTE WRITTEN AND ELECTRONIC MATERIALS; PROVIDE COUNSELING AND TREATMENT SERVICES INCLUDING SUPPORT GROUPS; AND IMPLEMENT ANNUAL SURVEYS TO ASSESS MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE DISORDERS IN STUDENTS. EMPOWER WILL SERVE ALL 886 STUDENTS AT IC—51.7% OF WHICH ARE WOMEN, 67.5% CAUCASIAN, 39.6% PELL-ELIGIBLE, 88.3% ON-CAMPUS RESIDENTS, AND 45.6% ATHLETES. ACCORDING TO THE CORE SURVEY IMPLEMENTED ON CAMPUS, JUST UNDER 30% OF STUDENTS REPORTED HEAVY EPISODIC DRINKING IN THE PREVIOUS TWO WEEKS. FOR STUDENTS UNDER AGE 21, 42.7% HAD CONSUMED ALCOHOL IN THE PREVIOUS 30 DAYS. STUDENTS ARE BOTH ARRIVING ON CAMPUS WITH MENTAL HEALTH PRESCRIPTIONS AND EXPERIENCE WITH MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING. A TOTAL OF 35.4% HAD AT SOME POINT BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH ANXIETY, 31% WITH DEPRESSION, 13.1% WITH PTSD, AND 9% WITH EATING DISORDERS. ALL IC STUDENTS (886 IN 2023-2024) WILL BE REACHED VIA EMPOWER THROUGH MESSAGING ANNUALLY, WITH A TOTAL OF APPROXIMATELY 2,658 OVER THREE YEARS. A DUPLICATED COUNT OF AT LEAST 1,000 STUDENTS WILL BE REACHED ANNUALLY THROUGH SPECIFIC TRAINING, OUTREACH, AND ASSESSMENTS, FOR A TOTAL OF 3,000 STUDENTS THROUGH THE THREE-YEAR PROJECT.

WE ARE ALSO REQUESTING FUNDING FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF EXAM LANES, WHICH INCLUDES STANDARD CLINIC CHAIR AND TRAY, SLIT LAMP, TONOMETER, TACHOMETER, AND ULTRASOUND BIO MICROSCOPE. THE MAJORITY OF EQUIPMENT PURCHASES HAVE A LIFE SPAN OF 10-15 YEARS, WHILE THE SOFTWARE COMPONENTS MAY HAVE A RENEWAL CYCLE OF APPROXIMATELY 3-5 YEARS. THE MISSION OF SOUTHWESTERN ILLINOIS COLLEGE (SWIC), THE GRANT APPLICANT, IS TO UPHOLD THE DIGNITY AND WORTH OF ALL PEOPLE AND HOLDS THE BELIEF THAT LEARNING IS A LIFE-LONG PROCESS WHICH ENHANCES THE QUALITY OF LIFE. THE COLLEGE PROVIDES FOR INDIVIDUAL GROWTH THROUGH EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AND ACTIVE PARTNERSHIPS WITH STUDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY. SWIC SEEKS TO CONTINUE SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY IT SERVES BY APPLYING FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 2019 RENEWAL (YEAR 1 OF 3) OF THE RSVP GRANT PROVIDED BY THE CORPORATION FOR NATIONAL AND COMMUNITY SERVICE (CNCS). IN ALIGNMENT WITH THE CNCS STRATEGIC PLAN, SWIC RSVP HAS PRIORITIZED HEALTHY FUTURES AS ITS PRIMARY FOCUS AREA. IF GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE AWARDED THIS RENEWAL GRANT, SWIC RSVP WILL PLACE 707 UNDUPLICATED VOLUNTEERS IN SERVICE ACTIVITIES THAT WILL HELP BUILD CAPACITY, INCREASE FOOD SECURITY, ASSIST IN TRANSPORTATION FOR VETERANS AND OTHER OLDER AND DISABLED ADULTS TO MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS, MENTOR AND TUTOR STUDENTS, ASSIST WITH FINANCIAL LITERACY AND RAISE OPIOID AWARENESS AND OTHER COMMUNITY PRIORITIES. SWIC RSVP WILL CONTINUE TO STRIVE TO MEET THE COMMUNITY NEEDS IN ST. CLAIR COUNTY AND SWIC'S COLLEGE DISTRICT IN MADISON COUNTY THROUGH SUPPORTIVE PARTNERSHIPS OF 111 VOLUNTEER STATIONS. OVER THE NEXT 3 YEARS SWIC RSVP HEALTHY FUTURES FOCUS AREA HAS 3 OBJECTIVES: AGING IN PLACE, OBESITY AND FOOD, AND ACCESS TO CARE. SWIC IS REQUESTING THE FEDERAL INVESTMENT OF $91,060.00 WHICH WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY $43,047 OF LOCAL FUNDING AND IN-KIND SUPPORT, AS WELL AS $52,766 FROM THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT ON AGING. SWIC RSVP PROVES TO BE A GREAT INVESTMENT AS IT WILL PROVIDE THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES 707 UNDUPLICATED VOLUNTEERS, WHICH IS A FEDERAL INVESTMENT OF ONLY $129 PER VOLUNTEER. THIS GRANT APPLICATION WILL SHOW EVIDENCE THAT SUPPORTS WHY SWIC HAS BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL AS A SPONSOR FOR ALL 3 SENIOR CORPS PROGRAMS, AS WELL AS AMERICORPS FOR OVER THE PAST 45 YEARS AND WILL CONTINUE TO SO IN THE FUTURE. IT SHOULD ALSO BE NOTED THAT WITH 45 YEARS OF SUCCESSFUL GRANT MANAGEMENT, SWIC HAS CHOSEN TO APPLY FOR THE GRANT OPPORTUNITY NUMBER IL1X WHICH COVERS THE EAST ST. LOUIS, CENTERVILLE, ALORTON, BROOKLYN, WASHINGTON PARK, FAIRMONT CITY, AND ST. CLAIR COUNTY. WE BELIEVE THAT BLENDING THESE 2 GRANT OPPORTUNITIES UNDER ONE SPONSOR AND UNIFYING THE EFFORTS ACROSS THE ENTIRE ST. CLAIR COUNTY WILL ONLY STRENGTHEN THE COMMUNITY IT SERVES.

BUILDING CAPACITY TO ENHANCE RURAL ILLINOIS STEM TEACHER EDUCATION PATHWAYS -THE PROJECT AIMS TO MEET THE NATIONAL NEED FOR MORE SECONDARY STEM TEACHERS IN RURAL AREAS. SPECIFICALLY, THE EFFORT RESPONDS TO NEW ILLINOIS STATE LEGISLATION THAT ADDS A YEAR OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND TWO YEARS OF LABORATORY SCIENCE TO THE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS. TO ADDRESS THE RESULTING TEACHER WORKFORCE DEMANDS, ILLINOIS COLLEGE WILL REVISE AND STREAMLINE PATHWAYS TO STEM TEACHER LICENSURE FOR STEM MAJORS. THESE EFFORTS WILL BE GUIDED BY DATA COLLECTION TO REVEAL BARRIERS FOR STEM MAJOR RECRUITMENT TO SECONDARY STEM TEACHING CAREERS. ADDITIONALLY, THE LEADERSHIP TEAM WILL APPLY INSIGHTS FROM DATA COLLECTED, ALONG WITH INPUT FROM A STEM ADVISORY COMMITTEE, TO STREAMLINE AND REVISE THE CURRENT STEM MAJOR CURRICULA, SO THAT STUDENTS COULD DOUBLE MAJOR IN EDUCATION AND FINISH THEIR UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES WITHIN 4 YEARS. THE 10-PERSON STEM ADVISORY COMMITTEE WILL BE MAJORITY SCHOOL DISTRICT STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING AN ILLINOIS COLLEGE STEM ALUMNUS NOW TEACHING SECONDARY SCIENCE, ALONG WITH MULTIPLE ILLINOIS COLLEGE STEM AND EDUCATION FACULTY. THESE CHANGES COULD MAKE PREPARATION FOR STEM TEACHING CAREERS MORE AFFORDABLE AND ACCESSIBLE, THEREBY INCREASING AND DIVERSIFYING THE REGIONAL STEM TEACHER WORKFORCE. THIS PROJECT AT ILLINOIS COLLEGE INCLUDES PARTNERSHIPS WITH FOUR HIGH-NEED LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS ? A-C CENTRAL, BEARDSTOWN, JACKSONVILLE, AND VIRGINIA ? AS WELL AS AMONG STEM AND EDUCATION FACULTY. THE PROJECT HAS MULTIPLE GOALS, ALL OF WHICH AIM TO CREATE A PIPELINE OF HIGH-QUALITY STEM TEACHERS TO SERVE RURAL SCHOOLS IN WEST-CENTRAL ILLINOIS. THE PROJECT WILL SURVEY STEM MAJORS TO UNDERSTAND DRIVERS AND BARRIERS TO PURSUING SECONDARY STEM TEACHER LICENSURE. ADDITIONALLY, THE PROJECT WILL STREAMLINE STEM AND EDUCATION MAJOR PROGRAMS TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO COMPLETE BOTH MAJORS AND TEACHING LICENSURE IN FOUR YEARS. FURTHER, THE PROJECT WILL DESIGN A NEW COMPUTER SCIENCE ENDORSEMENT FOR STEM TEACHERS TO ADDRESS NEW STATE LEGISLATION THAT ADDS COMPUTER SCIENCE TO HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS. THE PROJECT WILL BE GUIDED BY INPUT FROM A STEM ADVISORY COMMITTEE WITH MEMBERS REPRESENTING HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS, CURRENT STEM STUDENTS, AND ALUMNI WHO ARE NOW STEM TEACHERS, AS WELL AS STEM AND EDUCATION FACULTY. THROUGH THESE ACTIVITIES, ILLINOIS COLLEGE WILL STRENGTHEN ITS PARTNERSHIPS AND RECRUITMENT EFFORTS WITH LOCAL HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS. OUTCOMES OF THE EFFORT COULD PRODUCE INSIGHTS ABOUT MAKING STEM TEACHING CAREERS MORE ACCESSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE FOR STEM MAJORS AT OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND IN RURAL CONTEXTS. THIS CAPACITY BUILDING PROJECT IS SUPPORTED THROUGH THE ROBERT NOYCE TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (NOYCE). THE NOYCE PROGRAM SUPPORTS TALENTED STEM UNDERGRADUATE MAJORS AND PROFESSIONALS TO BECOME EFFECTIVE K-12 STEM TEACHERS AND EXPERIENCED, EXEMPLARY K-12 TEACHERS TO BECOME STEM MASTER TEACHERS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS. IT ALSO SUPPORTS RESEARCH ON THE PERSISTENCE, RETENTION, AND EFFECTIVENESS OF K-12 STEM TEACHERS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.

INCREASING SCIENCE LITERACY IN MICROBIOLOGY THROUGH THE USE OF OPEN EDUCATION RESOURCES -THIS PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY ENGAGING STUDENTS IN A NOVEL WAY TO IMPROVE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF MICROBIOLOGY CONCEPTS. UNDERSTANDING THE SCIENTIFIC PROCESS AND DEVELOPING CRITICAL THINKING ARE IMPORTANT SKILLS FOR EVERYONE, BUT ESPECIALLY FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS PURSUING CAREERS IN STEM FIELDS. HOWEVER, STUDENTS FREQUENTLY STRUGGLE WITH LEARNING HOW TO EFFECTIVELY READ, ANALYZE, AND WRITE ABOUT SCIENCE. MOREOVER, MANY STUDENTS LEAVE SCIENCE BECAUSE THEY FEEL UNCONNECTED AND UNINSPIRED BY TRADITIONAL TEACHING METHODS. AT THE SAME TIME, TEACHERS STRUGGLE TO FIND TEACHING RESOURCES THAT ARE EFFECTIVE AND INNOVATIVE TO ENGAGE THEIR STUDENTS IN THE SCIENTIFIC PROCESS. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO ADDRESS THESE ISSUES USING SUCCESSFUL INNOVATIVE METHODS SUCH AS HAVING STUDENTS PRACTICE SCIENCE WHILE WORKING IN TEAMS ON REAL PROBLEMS AND GENERATING READILY AVAILABLE TEACHING MATERIALS. TEAMS OF TEACHERS AND STUDENTS WILL CREATE ACCESSIBLE AND FREE LEARNING MATERIALS BASED ON POPULAR SCIENCE PODCASTS. THE PROJECT IS NOVEL BECAUSE IT WILL USE MODERN COMMUNICATION TOOLS TO ENGAGE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS. THE IMPACT OF THESE TRAINING AND LEARNING MATERIALS ON STUDENT SCIENCE LITERACY, IDENTITY, AND MOTIVATION WILL BE INVESTIGATED. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO BE EVALUATED TO DETERMINE BEST PRACTICES FOR TRAINING FACULTY TO IMPLEMENT THESE MATERIALS IN THE CLASSROOM. A GUIDING IMPERATIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO SUPPORT THE TRAINING OF A DIVERSE STEM WORKFORCE USING ACTIVE METHODS AND ACCESSIBLE MATERIALS THAT BUILD SCIENCE LITERACY AND CRITICAL THINKING. THROUGH THE CREATION OF OPEN EDUCATION RESOURCES, WHICH ARE FREE, ADAPTABLE, OF HIGH QUALITY, AND ACCESSIBLE, THIS PROJECT IS FOCUSED ON ENHANCING SCIENCE LITERACY AND CRITICAL THINKING. MOREOVER, THIS PROJECT STRIVES TO INCREASE INCLUSIVITY IN STEM EDUCATION GIVEN THAT PUBLICLY AND WIDELY AVAILABLE RESOURCES USUALLY ENGAGE LARGER, MORE DIVERSE POPULATIONS BY REMOVING ACCESSIBILITY BARRIERS. WITH THESE GOALS IN MIND, THIS PROJECT AIMS TO EXPAND A SUCCESSFUL DIGITAL INITIATIVE THAT USES THIS WEEK IN MICROBIOLOGY (TWIM), A PODCAST THAT I) FEATURES PROFESSIONAL SCIENTISTS DISCUSSING CURRENT PAPERS, II) IS LICENSED UNDER CREATIVE COMMONS, AND III) IS SUPPORTED BY THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR MICROBIOLOGY. UNDER THIS INITIATIVE STUDENTS ANNOTATE THE TWIM PODCASTS WITH MATERIALS THEY THINK OTHER UNDERGRADUATES WOULD CONNECT WITH (CULTURAL RELEVANCY, CURRENT EVENTS, ETC.) AND TIE THESE BACK TO A COURSE?S LEARNING OBJECTIVES. CRITICALLY, THE PROJECT USES METHODS KNOWN TO INCREASE LONG TERM RETENTION IN STEM, INCLUDING BUILDING A COLLABORATIVE FACULTY LEARNING COMMUNITY, STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN THE PRACTICE OF SCIENCE, BUILDING STUDENT SCIENCE IDENTITY, AND WORKING ON RELEVANT, REAL-WORLD SCIENTIFIC PROBLEMS. THERE ARE THREE MAIN COMPONENTS TO THIS PROJECT. FIRST, IT AIMS TO TRAIN TEACHERS AND STUDENTS USING AN ESTABLISHED COLLABORATIVE WORKFLOW. KEY FEATURES OF THIS WORKFLOW ARE THE USE OF LEARNING METHODS AND MATERIALS THAT ARE ACCESSIBLE, INCLUSIVE OF UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS, AND KNOWN TO INCREASE SCIENCE LITERACY AND PROMOTE THE FORMATION OF SCIENCE IDENTITY. SECOND, THE PROJECT AIMS TO PRODUCE A FREE ELECTRONIC BOOK CALLED PODCAST ANNOTATION RESOURCES: MICROBIOLOGY. THIRD, THE PROJECT AIMS TO USE VALIDATED METHODS TO ASSESS THE EFFECT OF THESE ACTIVE LEARNING MATERIALS ON METRICS KNOWN TO PROMOTE LONG-TERM STEM SUCCESS: STUDENT CONTENT UNDERSTANDING, STEM MOTIVATION, SCIENCE LITERACY, AND SCIENCE IDENTITY. BY IDENTIFYING BENEFITS AND BARRIERS TO ADOPTION OF THIS TYPE OF ACTIVE LEARNING AND COLLABORATION, THE PROJECT WILL ENHANCE THE LEARNING EXPERIENCES OF ALL PARTICIPANTS AS THEY WORK ON COMPLEX AND RELEVANT TOPICS IN DIVERSE COLLABORATIVE TEAMS. BY TRAINING ADDITIONAL FACULTY, USING A PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY?S PODCAST WITH A GLOBAL REACH, AND DISSEMINATING RESEARCH FINDINGS THROUGH MEETING ATTENDANCE AND PUBLICATION, THE AVAILABILITY OF LEARNING MATERIALS AND METHODS WILL ENABLE TEACHERS ACROSS THE NATION TO EASILY FIND AND ADOPT ACTIVE LEARNING MATERIALS. THE NSF IUSE: EDU PROGRAM SUPPORTS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS TO IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STEM EDUCATION FOR ALL STUDENTS. THROUGH ITS ENGAGED STUDENT LEARNING TRACK, THE PROGRAM SUPPORTS THE CREATION, EXPLORATION, AND IMPLEMENTATION OF PROMISING PRACTICES AND TOOLS.
