INCREDIBLE LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY. FACULTY WILL RE-ENVISION EXPERIENTIAL HUMANITIES EDUCATION THAT CAN SUCCEED WITHIN THE PUBLIC HEALTH GUIDELINES AND TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS UNDER WHICH WE CURRENTLY OPERATE.] [PURPOSE: TO REORIENT KNOX COLLEGE?S STUDY ABROAD AND CROSS-CULTURAL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS BY EXPANDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS THROUGH HUMANITIES-BASED IMMERSIVE STUDY PROGRAMS THAT CAPITALIZE ON THE UNITED STATES? LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY, THEREBY RE-ENVISIONING EXPERIENTIAL HUMANITIES EDUCATION IN A MANNER THAT CAN SUCCEED WITHIN THE PUBLIC HEALTH GUIDELINES AND TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED BY THE NOVEL CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC. ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: TWELVE KNOX COLLEGE?S FACULTY MEMBERS WILL CREATE 10 HUMANITIES-BASED IMMERSIVE COURSES THAT WILL TAKE PLACE IN 2022. THESE PROJECTS WILL SERVE APPROXIMATELY THE SAME NUMBER OF STUDENTS, USUALLY BETWEEN 110 AND 150, WHO WOULD PURSUE INTERNATIONAL STUDY IN A TYPICAL ACADEMIC YEAR. EXPECTED OUTCOMES: ONE SET OF PROJECTS WILL ENGAGE DIRECTLY WITH IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES IN THE RECIPIENT?S AREA, SOME OF WHOM ARE LONG STANDING MEMBERS OF LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND OTHERS WHO ARE MORE RECENT. THESE INCLUDE MEXICAN MIGRANT CHILDREN, RECENT IMMIGRANTS AND ESTABLISHED RESIDENTS WHO ARE NATIVE SPANISH SPEAKERS, AND FRANCOPHONE IMMIGRANTS FROM WEST AFRICA. ANOTHER SET OF PROJECTS WILL HELP STUDENTS EXPLORE THE COMPLEX EXPERIENCES OF DIFFERENT GROUPS, INCLUDING THE MESKWAKI NATIVE AMERICAN COMMUNITY ON WHOSE TRIBAL LANDS THE RECIPIENT?S CAMPUS IS SITED; REGIONAL BILINGUAL AND NON-ENGLISH MONOLINGUAL POPULATIONS; COLLEGE STUDENTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS WHO ARE PURSUING MEDICAL TRAINING; AND ASYLUM SEEKERS ON THE U.S.-MEXICAN BORDER. A THIRD SET OF PROJECTS WILL EXPLORE THE PRODUCTION AND PRESENTATION OF KNOWLEDGE BY FOCUSING ON THE PREPARATION OF EXHIBITIONS OF FEMINIST ARTISTS; EXAMINING ONLINE NEWS LITERACY TRAINING COURSES, ONLINE FACT CHECKING COMMUNITIES, AND MEDIA LITERACY CURRICULA; AND A STUDY AND TRAVEL COURSE FOCUSED ON ANGEL ISLAND IN SAN FRANCISCO, WHICH AS THE ?ELLIS ISLAND OF THE WEST? WAS THE CONDUIT FOR HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF CHINESE IMMIGRANTS ENTERING AMERICA FROM 1910 TO 1940. INTENDED BENEFICIARIES: THE PRIMARY BENEFICIARIES OF THE PROJECT WILL BE THE 110-150 STUDENTS PER CYCLE WHO, DENIED THE POSSIBILITY OF STUDY ABROAD EXPERIENCES, WILL ENROLL IN THE COURSES DEVELOPED THROUGH THIS GRANT. EMPLOYER STAKEHOLDERS REPORTED THAT NEW GRADUATES ARE ILL-PREPARED FOR WORKING WITH MODERN SYSTEMS SO THAT IT CAN TAKE UP TO TWO YEARS OF ADDITIONAL TRAINING BEFORE THEY BECOME PRODUCTIVE EMPLOYEES. A KEY IMPEDIMENT TO MODERNIZATION THAT ACADEMIC STAKEHOLDERS IDENTIFIED WAS THE LACK OF EXAMPLE INTRODUCTORY COURSE SEQUENCES TO ADOPT. THIS PROJECT WILL BEGIN TO REMEDY THAT SITUATION BY PIONEERING A NEW SET OF INTRODUCTORY COMPUTING COURSES, BUILT AROUND A MODERN CONCEPTUAL MODEL OF COMPUTATION THAT INCLUDES PARALLEL AND DISTRIBUTED PROCESSING, WITH RIGOROUS EVALUATION OF THEIR EFFECTIVENESS AND THEIR ADOPTABILITY ACROSS A DIVERSE GROUP OF COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. IN ADDITION, THE PROJECT WILL BETTER PREPARE AND MOTIVATE THE FUTURE RESEARCH WORKFORCE TO LEVERAGE ADVANCED CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE BY STRENGTHENING THEIR FOUNDATIONAL UNDERSTANDING OF MODERN COMPUTING SYSTEMS AND COMPUTATIONAL PROBLEM SOLVING METHODS. MODERN SYSTEMS THAT ARE GEARED TOWARD SUPPORTING BIG DATA, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, LARGE SCALE SIMULATIONS, CLOUD COMPUTING, ETC., ARE THE FOUNDATION OF CURRENT RESEARCH PARADIGMS. THE PROJECT SERVES THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY TRAINING A WELL-PREPARED AND DIVERSE WORKFORCE THAT IS BETTER ABLE TO COMPETE GLOBALLY, EXPLOIT, AND MEET THE CHALLENGES PRESENTED BY ALL OF THESE ASPECTS OF THE PERVASIVE, MODERN, CYBER-TECHNOLOGY ENVIRONMENT. THE IMMEDIATE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO OVERCOME A KEY IMPEDIMENT THAT HAS PREVENTED EDUCATORS FROM UPDATING INTRODUCTORY COMPUTER SCIENCE CURRICULA TO ADDRESS CURRENT SYSTEMS: A LACK OF EXAMPLES OF MODERNIZED COURSES. SINCE PARALLEL AND DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING IS A CORE COMPONENT OF MODERN COMPUTING INFRASTRUCTURE, THE PROJECT WILL RESULT IN AN OVERALL MODERNIZATION OF THE FUTURE RESEARCH WORKFORCE, AND ENABLE MORE EFFECTIVE USE OF ADVANCED CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE RESOURCES BY A LARGER SET OF RESEARCHERS THAN IS NOW POSSIBLE. THE PROJECT WILL DESIGN A MODERN FIRST YEAR INTRODUCTORY COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSE SEQUENCE, BASED ON A CONCEPTUAL MODEL THAT INCLUDES THE FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENTS OF PARALLEL AND DISTRIBUTED COMPUTATION AS FOUND IN CURRENT SYSTEMS. THE SEQUENCE WILL BE IMPLEMENTED AT TWO COLLEGES, USING TWO DIFFERENT PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES, TO DEMONSTRATE THE GENERALITY OF THE MODEL. THE PROJECT WILL DEVELOP A SET OF PRE-TREATMENT AND POST-TREATMENT INSTRUMENTS, BASED ON EDUCATION SCIENCE, TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE APPROACH. EVALUATION WILL FIRST BE DONE FOR UNMODIFIED COURSES, AS AN EXPERIMENTAL CONTROL GROUP. THEN THE MODIFIED COURSES WILL BE EVALUATED TO GATHER DATA DOCUMENTING THE OUTCOME OF THE INTERVENTION. SIX ADDITIONAL INSTITUTIONS, SELECTED FOR DIVERSITY (SIZE, SCHEDULE, STUDENT POPULATION, CONNECTIONS TO OTHER INSTITUTIONS SUCH AS COMMUNITY COLLEGES, ETC.), WILL BE RECRUITED TO SUBSEQUENTLY ADOPT AND EVALUATE THE NEW COURSE SEQUENCE, AND THUS DISCOVER ENHANCEMENTS THAT EXPAND ITS POTENTIAL FOR WIDESPREAD USE, AS WELL AS PROVIDING EVIDENCE OF EFFECTIVENESS. INSTRUCTORS AT THE ADDITIONAL INSTITUTIONS WILL GO THROUGH INTENSIVE SUMMER TRAINING WORKSHOPS TO LEARN HOW TO USE THE EVALUATION INSTRUMENTS AND HOW TO ADOPT THE NEW COURSE DESIGNS. IN ADDITION TO PUBLIC DISSEMINATION OF THE NEW COURSE SEQUENCES WITH THEIR SUPPORTING MATERIALS THROUGH AN ACTIVE OUTREACH EFFORT, INCLUDING THE NSF-SPONSORED ACCESS PROGRAM, THE PROJECT WILL RESULT IN BOOK CHAPTERS AND PUBLICATIONS DESCRIBING THE COURSES AND THE EVALUATION RESULTS. THIS AWARD BY THE OFFICE OF ADVANCED CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE IS JOINTLY SUPPORTED BY THE DIVISION OF COMPUTING AND COMMUNICATION FOUNDATIONS WITHIN THE DIRECTORATE FOR COMPUTER AND INFORMATION SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: CYBERTRAINING: IMPLEMENTATION: MEDIUM: ACAI-TRAIN: SCALABLE INSTRUCTOR TRAINING FOR INFUSING AI AND ADVANCED CI CONCEPTS INTO EARLY CORE COMPUTING COURSES -ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI), LARGE-SCALE DATA, CONNECTED DEVICES, CLOUD AND HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING SYSTEMS, THAT TOGETHER FORM THE NATION'S CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE, ARE CENTRAL TO NATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS, YET MOST COMPUTING STUDENTS ENCOUNTER THEM ONLY IN ADVANCED ELECTIVE COURSES. THIS PROJECT INFUSES ASPECTS OF AI, BIG DATA, AND PARALLEL AND DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING CONCEPTS AND PRACTICES INTO THREE FOUNDATIONAL COMPUTING COURSES. THE FIRST TWO FORM THE USUAL INTRODUCTORY PROGRAMMING SEQUENCE, AND THIRD IS THE COMPUTER SYSTEMS COURSE THAT IS OFTEN TAKEN SHORTLY AFTER THEM. THUS, ALL COMPUTING MAJORS, NOT ONLY THOSE PURSUING UPPER-LEVEL ELECTIVE COURSES, WILL DEVELOP CRITICAL SKILLS FOR UNDERSTANDING AND CONTRIBUTING TO THE MODERN COMPUTATIONAL ECOSYSTEM. THE PROJECT ADDRESSES A PERSISTENT BARRIER TO SUCH CURRICULUM MODERNIZATION: MANY INSTRUCTORS NEED FOCUSED PREPARATION, CLASSROOM-TESTED EXAMPLES, AND ADAPTABLE TEACHING MATERIALS BEFORE THEY CAN CONFIDENTLY INTRODUCE THESE TOPICS IN EARLY COURSES. TO OVERCOME THIS BOTTLENECK, THE PROJECT DEVELOPS COURSES AND MATERIALS TO TRAIN ABOUT 200 CURRENT AND FUTURE INSTRUCTORS THROUGH THREE INTENSIVE IN-PERSON SUMMER WORKSHOPS, AN ADDITIONAL SIX HYBRID TUTORIALS AT MAJOR CONFERENCES, AND COMPLEMENTARY ONLINE WORKSHOPS. SUMMER TRAINEES ADAPT AND IMPLEMENT THE COURSE EXEMPLARS AT THEIR OWN INSTITUTIONS AND CONTRIBUTE EVALUATION DATA, CLASSROOM-TESTED REFINEMENT AND LOCAL ADAPTATION, ENABLING BROADER ADOPTION. WITH THE POTENTIAL TO IMPACT ABOUT 250,000 STUDENTS OVER 5-10 YEARS, THE PROJECT SERVES NSF'S MISSION BY STRENGTHENING COMPUTING EDUCATION, EXPANDING ACCESS TO AI AND ADVANCED CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE SKILLS, AND BUILDING THE NATION'S LONG-TERM TECHNOLOGICAL AND RESEARCH WORKFORCE CAPACITY. THE PROJECT ADVANCES KNOWLEDGE IN COMPUTING EDUCATION BY PRODUCING RIGOROUSLY CLASSROOM-TESTED EXEMPLARS INFUSED WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI), BIG DATA (BD), AND PARALLEL & DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING (PDC) FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE 1 (CS1), COMPUTER SCIENCE 2 (CS2), AND COMPUTER SYSTEMS COURSES. IMPLEMENTATION ACROSS 60 DIVERSE INSTITUTIONS WILL GENERATE EVIDENCE-BASED MODELS THAT CAN BE WIDELY ADOPTED, THEREBY TRANSFORMING EARLY COMPUTING EDUCATION AT SCALE. THE PROJECT INVESTIGATES HOW AI-ENABLED LEARNING TOOLS AND PEDAGOGY CAN MODERNIZE CORE CURRICULA BY ENABLING STUDENTS TO CONSTRUCT, EXPLORE, AND REASON ABOUT MODERN COMPUTING SYSTEMS EARLIER AND IN MORE DEPTH THAN WAS PREVIOUSLY POSSIBLE. EVALUATION DATA FROM TRAINEES' IMPLEMENTATIONS - INCLUDING STUDENT LEARNING, RETENTION, AND INSTITUTIONAL ADOPTABILITY - WILL CONTRIBUTE TO GENERALIZABLE KNOWLEDGE ON THE DESIGN AND SCALING OF CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE-CENTRIC CURRICULUM INNOVATIONS. THE PROJECT INCORPORATES ASPECTS OF AI, BD, AND PDC CONCEPTS AND PRACTICES INTO THE FOUNDATIONAL COMPUTING COURSES ENSURING THAT ALL COMPUTING MAJORS, NOT ONLY THOSE PURSUING UPPER-LEVEL ELECTIVES, DEVELOP CRITICAL CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE-READY SKILLS. THE PROJECT'S THREE CORE COURSE EXEMPLARS WILL BE NATIONALLY ADOPTABLE, WITH TRAINEES PROVIDING LOCAL ADAPTATIONS TO BUILD A COMMUNITY-DRIVEN ECOSYSTEM OF SHARED MATERIALS.
