THREE RED CONSORTIUM MEETINGS THAT WILL PROVIDE A FORUM FOR REVOLUTIONIZING ENGINEERING DEPARTMENTS (RED) TEAMS TO LEARN, EXPLORE, AND SHARE IDEAS THAT PROMOTE TRANSFORMATION IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION RESEARCH AND PRACTICE. ? ENGINEERING THE INCLUSIVE MINDSET FOR THE FUTURE: A BLUEPRINT FOR SYSTEMIC CHANGE IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION -THIS PROJECT IS EXAMINING THE CURRENT STATE OF THE ENGINEERING CURRICULUM AND MAKING RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING ITS FUTURE DIRECTION TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE SOCIETY OF TOMORROW. MANY REPORTS HAVE EMERGED IN THE RECENT PAST REGARDING NEEDED CHANGES IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION FOR THE FUTURE; HOWEVER, THIS PROJECT WILL GO ONE STEP FURTHER AND ACTUALLY DEVELOP A BLUEPRINT FOR A PLAN OF ACTION IN HOW WE CAN ACHIEVE THAT VISION. THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING AND THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR ENGINEERING EDUCATION, THE PROJECT IS LAYING THE GROUNDWORK FOR A SEA CHANGE IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION THAT WILL TRANSFORM OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM FAR INTO THE FUTURE. THE WORLD IS RAPIDLY CHANGING. WE ARE ENTERING AN AGE OF EXPONENTIAL CHANGE. WHO KNOWS WHAT IS IN STORE FOR US IN THE NEXT FEW DECADES? WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR THE ENGINEERING PROFESSION? HOW WILL OUR CURRICULUM GET US THERE? THROUGH THIS PROJECT, WE WILL CONDUCT THE PLANNING ACTIVITIES AND WRITE REPORTS NECESSARY TO MOVE US FORWARD IN UNDERSTANDING THE REQUIRED CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ENGINEER OF THE FUTURE AS WELL AS DEFINING THE TYPE OF CURRICULAR CHANGES WE WILL NEED TO REALIZE THIS VISION. TWO PRIMARY DOCUMENTS WILL BE THE OUTCOMES FROM THIS PROJECT. ENGINEERING THE INCLUSIVE MINDSET FOR THE FUTURE REPORT WILL BE THE CULMINATION OF MORE THAN A TWO-YEAR OF EFFORT ON BEHALF OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR ENGINEERING EDUCATION AND WILL OUTLINE A VISION OF THE CHANGES NEEDED FOR THE ENGINEERING CURRICULUM OF THE FUTURE. THE SECOND DOCUMENT WILL OUTLINE THE DETAILS OF A BLUEPRINT (TACTICAL PLAN) FOR A LARGER PROJECT TO TRANSFORM ENGINEERING EDUCATION. THE BLUEPRINT WILL INFORM A PLANNED NAE ENGINEERING 2050 REPORT AND WILL INCLUDE A MULTI-YEAR ACTION PLAN TO IMPLEMENT THE ASEE/NAE RECOMMENDATIONS. IN SHORT, THE NAE ENGINEERING OF 2050 REPORT WILL DESCRIBE WHERE WE NEED TO BE AND THE ASEE MINDSET REPORT WILL DESCRIBE HOW TO GET THERE. THE BLUEPRINT FOR CHANGE (ACTION PLAN) WE DEVELOP WILL ENSURE THAT THESE TWO REPORTS ARE NOT MERELY READ, PUT ON A BOOKSHELF, AND FORGOTTEN BUT WILL BE ACTED UPON TO PRODUCE REAL AND LASTING CHANGE. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.

ADVANCE PARTNERSHIP: ENGINEERING DEANS? GENDER EQUITY INITIATIVE: ALIGNING SYSTEMS TO ENSURE INCLUSION AND EQUITY IN ADVANCEMENT OF FACULTY -SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) DISCIPLINES ARE BETTER ABLE TO SOLVE COMPLICATED GLOBAL PROBLEMS WHEN DIVERSE EXPERTISE IS WELCOMED, SUPPORTED, AND RETAINED. STEM CULTURES, HOWEVER, RESULT FROM SYSTEMS THAT WERE, AND ARE, PREDOMINATELY MALE, WHITE, HETEROSEXUAL, AND ABLE-BODIED, WHICH RESULTS IN EXPLICIT AND IMPLICIT PRACTICES THAT KEEP STEM SPACES LARGELY HOMOGENOUS DESPITE CHANGES IN THE WORKFORCE AND NATIONAL NORMS. THE LOSS OF DIVERSE TALENT RESULTS IN THE NARROWING OF DISCIPLINARY EXCELLENCE AND CAPACITY FOR PROBLEM SOLVING, INNOVATION, AND RESILIENCE IN TIMES OF STRESS. HEIGHTENED DEMANDS FOR INNOVATION, COUPLED WITH DEMOGRAPHIC SHIFTS, AND, MOST RECENTLY, THE IMPACTS OF THE COVID 19 PANDEMIC AND THE RACIAL VIOLENCE, RESULTED IN GENDERED AND RACIALIZED WORKFORCE OUTCOMES. THESE IMPACTS CREATE AN URGENT NEED TO ENSURE THAT ACADEMIC ENGINEERING ENVIRONMENTS ARE INCLUSIVE AND EQUITABLE FOR DIVERSE WOMEN FACULTY SO THAT ALL TALENT IS AVAILABLE TO ADDRESS CURRENT AND FUTURE COMPLEX GLOBAL PROBLEMS REQUIRING ENGINEERING EXPERTISE. THIS NEED WILL NOT BE MET UNLESS ENGINEERING SYSTEMS, (E.G., ACADEMIC COLLEGES, ENGINEERING ACCREDITING BODIES, PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES) IDENTIFY AND ADDRESS STRUCTURES, POLICIES, AND PRACTICES THAT KEEP SEXISM AND RACISM IN PLACE. CURRENTLY, ACADEMIC ENGINEERING SYSTEMS ARE LOOSELY ALIGNED AND SOMETIMES DISCONNECTED. ALIGNING THESE ENGINEERING SYSTEMS AND INTEGRATING EVIDENCE-BASED POLICIES AND PRACTICES THAT SUPPORT INCLUSIVE ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE WILL ENABLE THE AVAILABILITY OF MORE ABUNDANT AND DIVERSE ENGINEERING TALENT AS WELL AS STEM SYSTEM REFORM. THIS INITIATIVE WILL EXTEND THE WORK OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF ENGINEERING EDUCATION?S (ASEE?S) ADVANCE ADAPTATION ENGINEERING DEANS GENDER EQUITY (EDGE) INITIATIVE, WHICH PROVIDED RESOURCES, AND EXEMPLARS, FOR SUCCESSFUL ADAPTATION OF SOCIAL SCIENCE-BASED EVIDENCE TO ACADEMIC ENGINEERING PRACTICE. THE GOALS OF THE KNOWLEDGE INITIATIVE ARE 1) TO ALIGN SYSTEMS OF ACADEMIC ENGINEERING COLLEGES AND DEPARTMENTS FOCUSED ON PROMOTION AND TENURE TO INCREASE THE SUCCESS OF DIVERSE WOMEN ENGINEERING FACULTY; 2) TO ALIGN AND MAKE TRANSPARENT THE SYSTEMS OF ACCREDITATION GOVERNANCE WITHIN PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES AND ABET, AND TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF DIVERSE WOMEN ABET PROGRAM EVALUATORS AND COMMISSIONERS TO DIVERSIFY THE ACCREDITATION DECISION-MAKING BODIES AND INCREASE LEADERSHIP ACCOUNTABILITY; AND 3) ULTIMATELY, TO SUPPORT DIVERSE TALENT AND EQUITABLE SUCCESS OF DIVERSE WOMEN FUTURE ENGINEERS. THE KNOWLEDGE CHANGE MODEL WILL BE PILOTED AND DEPLOYED ON EIGHT CAMPUSES WITHIN A DIVERSE COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE. OUTCOMES WILL BE DISSEMINATED THROUGH PARTNER NETWORKS, ASEE?S ENGINEERING DEANS COUNCIL, SOCIAL MEDIA, AND SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS. THIS WORK IS ALIGNED WITH THE NSF ADVANCE PROGRAM, WHICH IS DESIGNED TO FOSTER GENDER EQUITY THROUGH A FOCUS ON THE IDENTIFICATION AND ELIMINATION OF ORGANIZATIONAL BARRIERS THAT IMPEDE THE FULL PARTICIPATION AND ADVANCEMENT OF DIVERSE FACULTY IN ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS. THE MEETING PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PARTICIPANTS TO SHARE ONGOING/FORMATIVE EXPERIENCES ABOUT THEIR PROJECT, WITH A FOCUS ON CREATING OPPORTUNITIES TO DISSEMINATE PROMISING PRACTICES AND ENGAGE IN COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING AROUND SHARED CHALLENGES. THIS PROJECT ALIGNS WITH THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION'S MISSION TO INVEST IN TRANSFORMATIVE RESEARCH AND ADDRESSES THE PRESSING NEED FOR PERSONALIZED LEARNING IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION. TODAY'S LEARNING SYSTEMS OFTEN ASSUME A ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL APPROACH, DISREGARDING INDIVIDUAL LEARNING DIFFERENCES. PERSONALIZED LEARNING, A CONCEPT DATING BACK TO THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY, PRESENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO TAILOR EDUCATIONAL CURRICULA TO MEET THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF EACH LEARNER. THE INTEGRATION OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES SUCH AS MACHINE LEARNING, DATA MINING, AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE HOLDS IMMENSE POTENTIAL TO CREATE TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS. THIS PROJECT WILL HOST A WORKSHOP THAT BRINGS RESEARCHERS TOGETHER TO CREATE NEW APPROACHES TO PERSONALIZING LEARNING. THE PERSONALIZED LEARNING IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION IDEAS LAB, HOSTED BY THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR ENGINEERING EDUCATION (ASEE) IN PARTNERSHIP WITH KNOWINNOVATION, INC. (KI), SEEKS TO GENERATE NOVEL INTERDISCIPLINARY PROPOSALS FOR ADVANCED ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIES ADDRESSING PERSONALIZED LEARNING SYSTEMS IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION. THE WORKSHOP WILL CONVENE A DIVERSE GROUP OF ABOUT FORTY RESEARCHERS, INCLUDING ENGINEERS, SCIENTISTS, AND DOMAIN EXPERTS IN PERSONALIZED LEARNING SYSTEMS. THE IDEAS LAB FOLLOWS THE CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING (CPS) METHODOLOGY, INCORPORATING CREATIVITY, CRITICAL THINKING, AND METACOGNITIVE SKILLS TO FACILITATE PROBLEM-SOLVING AND IDEA GENERATION. PARTICIPANTS WILL WORK IN SEVERAL STAGES, INCLUDING DATA GATHERING, PROBLEM FRAMING, IDEA GENERATION, SOLUTION CREATION, AND ACTION PLANNING. THE WORKSHOP WILL FOCUS ON THREE PRIMARY AREAS: EXTENDING ENGINEERING EDUCATION RESEARCH INTO MULTIPLE LEARNING CONTEXTS, INTEGRATING MULTIMODAL SENSORS TO IMPROVE PHYSICAL TASKS IN ENGINEERING LEARNING, AND EXPLORING TEAM-BASED DESIGN AND HUMAN-MACHINE CO-LEARNING. THE BROADER IMPACTS OF THIS INITIATIVE ARE FAR-REACHING. BY PROMOTING PERSONALIZED LEARNING IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION, THIS PROJECT DIRECTLY IMPACTS THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION, PREPARING FUTURE ENGINEERS FOR THE CHALLENGES OF THE 21ST CENTURY. A NATIONAL FRAMEWORK FOR RECOGNITION OF ENGINEERING AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY FACULTY INSTRUCTIONAL EXCELLENCE: PILOTING A REGISTERED ENGINEERING EDUCATOR DESIGNATION -THIS PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY IMPLEMENTING A FRAMEWORK FOR CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF ENGINEERING AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY FACULTY THAT BUILDS AND MAINTAINS THEIR EFFECTIVENESS AS COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY TEACHERS. THE NATION?S FUTURE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IS DRIVEN BY INNOVATIONS CREATED BY WELL-TRAINED ENGINEERS. THE TRAINING THAT ASPIRING ENGINEERS RECEIVE IS DEPENDENT UPON THE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE OF ENGINEERING AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY FACULTY AT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES ACROSS AMERICA. A SIGNIFICANT BODY OF RESEARCH SHOWS THAT HIGH QUALITY TEACHING DOES MATTER AND IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT FOR GROUPS THAT HAVE HISTORICALLY HAD LESS ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION. THIS IUSE INSTITUTIONAL AND COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION PROJECT INITIATES A NATIONAL CERTIFICATION PROGRAM TO RECOGNIZE ENGINEERING AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY FACULTY TRAINING AND TEACHING EXCELLENCE THAT SUPPORTS AND STIMULATES THEIR ONGOING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. MANAGED THROUGH THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR ENGINEERING EDUCATION, THIS PROGRAM WILL CREATE TRAINING RESOURCES TO SERVE FACULTY AT OVER 30 INSTITUTIONS ACROSS THE USA. FOUR RESEARCH QUESTIONS GUIDE THE EFFORT TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT OF THE INTERVENTIONAL FRAMEWORK ON INSTITUTIONAL CULTURES OF TEACHING. PERCEPTIONS AND EXPERIENCES DIFFER ACROSS INSTITUTIONAL CONTEXTS. IMPROVING SENSING AND COMMUNICATION CAPABILITIES IN MARINE, FRESHWATER, AS WELL AS POLAR ENVIRONMENTS IS CRITICAL FOR MAKING SIGNIFICANT DISCOVERY-BASED AND USE-INSPIRED RESEARCH ADVANCES THAT CAN LEAD TO MORE ACCURATE PREDICTIONS OF GEOHAZARDS AND HARMFUL ALGAE BLOOMS, IMPROVED COASTAL RESILIENCE, BETTER MITIGATION OF CLIMATE CHANGE, AND MORE RESILIENT COASTAL INFRASTRUCTURE. TYPICAL TERRESTRIAL SENSING AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES CANNOT BE READILY DEPLOYED IN MARINE AND FRESHWATER ENVIRONMENTS AND ESPECIALLY IN HARSH POLAR ENVIRONMENTS. THIS CHALLENGE SIGNIFICANTLY LIMITS THE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND ENGINEERING DEVELOPMENTS IN THESE ENVIRONMENTS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS IDEAS LAB WORKSHOP IS TO FOSTER THE CREATION OF TRANSFORMATIVE IDEAS AND INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAMS THAT WILL ADVANCE ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIES TO ADDRESS THE MOST PRESSING SENSING, COMMUNICATION, AND DATA TRANSMISSION CHALLENGES IN DIVERSE UNDERWATER ENVIRONMENTS. THE TEAM HAS ALSO SHOWN THAT WOMEN AND MEN HAVE SIMILAR GRADUATION RATES IN ENGINEERING, LIKELY A RESULT OF EFFORTS TO MAKE ENGINEERING EDUCATION A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT FOR WOMEN AND THE HIGH ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS OF THE WOMEN WHO DO STUDY ENGINEERING. AS WITH THE OVERALL GRADUATION RATE, INDIVIDUAL INSTITUTIONS AND PROGRAMS CAN AND DO HAVE WORSE OUTCOMES. A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF STUDENT PATHWAYS IN VARIOUS ENGINEERING DISCIPLINES PROVIDED PRACTITIONERS WITH RICH INFORMATION SPECIFIC TO THEIR DISCIPLINARY CONTEXT. THE TEAM HAS ALSO DESIGNED A VARIETY OF METRICS THAT HAVE PROVIDED RESEARCHERS AND PRACTITIONERS WITH AN IMPROVED UNDERSTANDING OF STUDENT PATHWAYS. THE QUALITY OF THE DATA SOURCE AND THE RESEARCH TEAM IS ATTESTED BY THESE SUBSTANTIAL FINDINGS, MULTIPLE BEST PAPER AWARDS, AND OTHER RECOGNITIONS. ASEE DOES NOT COMPETE WITH ALTERNATIVE DATA PROVIDERS BECAUSE ASEE IS NOT AN ACADEMIC INSTITUTION, WHICH WILL MAKE IT EASIER TO SOLICIT NEW DATA TO EXPAND THIS RESOURCE. THE PROJECT WILL SUPPORT ASEE IN BUILDING A NEW DATA SCHEMA TO COLLECT AND STORE THIS RICHER DATASET AS WELL AS BUILD A RANGE OF TOOLS TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR PRACTITIONERS AND RESEARCHERS TO VIEW ASPECTS OF THE DATA THROUGH DASHBOARDS. DURING THE TERM OF THE PROJECT, ASEE WILL ALSO TRANSFER ALL LEGAL AGREEMENTS WITH THE INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERS. THE CURRENT TEAM OF RESEARCHERS USING THE DATABASE WILL SUPPORT THIS EFFORT AS A LIAISON TO PROVIDE AN INTERFACE WITH INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERS. TO SUPPORT A GROWING COMMUNITY OF RESEARCHERS IN USING THE DATABASE, THE RESEARCH TEAM WILL ALSO DELIVER WORKSHOPS TO HELP EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT THE DATABASE AND HOW TO USE IT EFFECTIVELY. THE RESEARCH TEAM WILL ALSO CONTINUE TO DEVELOP SOFTWARE TOOLS THAT CAN BE USED BY OTHER RESEARCHERS AND PRACTITIONERS TO WORK WITH THE DATABASE. ARCHIVING AND MAINTAINING THE DATA COLLECTION AT ASEE ENSURES THAT THE CURRENT DATASET WILL BE PRESERVED, THAT IT WILL GROW TO INCLUDE A LARGER AND MORE DIVERSE SET OF INSTITUTIONS, AND THAT THE DATASET WILL BE MORE ACCESSIBLE, WHICH WILL ENSURE THAT THESE INSIGHTS ARE ABLE TO CONTINUE AND, THROUGH ASEE?S NATIONAL PLATFORM, INFLUENCE MULTIPLE NATIONAL STAKEHOLDERS. THIS PROJECT WILL SUPPORT THE NSF BPE PROGRAM BY BUILDING THE CAPACITY OF THE US ENGINEERING WORKFORCE THROUGH FOSTERING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF DIVERSE COMMUNITIES OF ENGINEERING STUDENTS. THIS PROJECT WILL WORK TO HELP INSTITUTIONS ATTRACT AND RETAIN MORE DIVERSE COHORTS OF STUDENTS INTO ENGINEERING MAJORS BY ADVANCING KNOWLEDGE IN STUDENT ONBOARDING, FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE, AND STUDENT SUCCESS. AS THE U.S. GOES THROUGH A CYCLE OF DECLINING NATIONAL BIRTHRATES, IT MUST FIND WAYS TO ENGAGE ALL OF ITS POPULATION IN ADVANCING SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL WORK. IT WILL BUILD UPON THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN OVERVIEW, RATIONALE, OBJECTIVES, AND VISION DEVELOPED IN FOUR NATIONAL BRAINSTORMING SESSIONS. THE PROGRAM WILL CONSIDER: 1) INSTITUTIONAL CULTURAL RESISTANCE TO WIDENING ADMISSIONS AND CREATING MULTIPLE EDUCATIONAL PATHWAYS FOR ENGINEERING MAJORS, 2) OTHER BARRIERS (FUNDING, STAFF, TIME) TO ADAPTATION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF EXISTING RESEARCH-BASED STRATEGIES, 3) DIFFERING CHALLENGES ACROSS INSTITUTION TYPES, AND 4) POTENTIAL USE OF TECHNOLOGIES (AI, ETC.) TO SUPPORT IMPLEMENTATION OF SPECIFIC RESEARCH-BASED STRATEGIES. THE PROGRAM WILL COMPRISE 1) ASYNCHRONOUS PRE-CONFERENCE KNOWLEDGE BUILDING EXERCISES TO INFORM THE CONFERENCE, TO INCLUDE A LISTENING SESSION HOSTED BY THE ENGINEERING RESEARCH VISIONING ALLIANCE (ERVA) THAT ENGAGES STUDENTS, 2) A TWO-DAY IN-PERSON CONFERENCE HOSTED AT NATIONAL ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING (NAE), AND 3) POST CONFERENCE VIRTUAL WORKING GROUP MEETINGS TO INCLUDE ADDITIONAL SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS TO ADDRESS ISSUES THAT SURFACED DURING THE CONFERENCE. ACROSS THESE EFFORTS, A FRAMEWORK WILL BE DEVELOPED TO ORGANIZE BEST PRACTICES FOR VARIOUS STUDENT AUDIENCES, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT INTERSECTIONALITIES ACROSS MULTIPLE STUDENT IDENTITIES, THAT COULD BE RECONFIGURED BY DIFFERENT INSTITUTIONS TO FIT THEIR MISSION, EXISTING PROGRAMS, STUDENT AUDIENCES. IN ADDITION, THE OUTCOMES FROM THE PROPOSED MEETING WILL HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO RESULT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW STRATEGIES AND TECHNOLOGIES. DISSEMINATION OF ASEE INDUSTRY 4.0 WEBINARS AND SUMMIT FINDINGS -THE INDUSTRIAL AND PROFESSIONAL WORLD IS UNDERGOING RAPID TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES. THESE ADVANCES COMPRISE INDUSTRY 4.0, THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION, DEFINED AS THE CONVERGENCE OF DIGITAL, BIOLOGICAL, AND PHYSICAL TECHNOLOGIES SO AS TO DISRUPT MANUFACTURING, AGRICULTURE, HEALTHCARE, AND ALL INDUSTRIES AROUND THE GLOBE. CURRENTLY, EDUCATORS AND TRAINING PROVIDERS VIEW INDUSTRY 4.0 TECHNOLOGIES IN SEGREGATED SILOS. TO SUCCEED IN INDUSTRY 4.0, EDUCATORS WILL BE REQUIRED TO RADICALLY RETHINK THEIR MODELS, METHODS, AND OFFERINGS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF INDUSTRY AND A RAPIDLY CHANGING SOCIETY. THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR ENGINEERING EDUCATION (ASEE) LAUNCHED A MULTI-YEAR DIALOG AMONG INDUSTRY, ACADEMIA, POLICYMAKERS, PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES AND ACCREDITORS ON THE DESIRED CONTENT KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICES NEEDED TO PREPARE GRADUATES OF ENGINEERING, ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY, AND ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN PROGRAMS FOR INDUSTRY 4.0 AND BEYOND. THESE EFFORTS CULMINATED IN A SERIES OF WEBINARS AND AN IN-PERSON SUMMIT. TO CAPITALIZE ON THE MOMENTUM OF THE NEW IDEAS AND RELATIONSHIPS THE WEBINARS AND SUMMIT HELPED SPARK, THE NEXT STEP WILL BE TO DISTILL AND COMMUNICATE THE KEY OBSERVATIONS AND FINDINGS FROM THE EVENTS. THIS PROJECT WILL BROADLY DISSEMINATE THE FINDINGS OF THESE WEBINARS AND THE SUMMIT AMONG THE NATION?S COMMUNITY AND TECHNICAL COLLEGES AND ENGINEERING AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENTS. POLICYMAKER BRIEFINGS WILL SUMMARIZE THE KEY FINDINGS REGARDING THE CHALLENGE OF, AND OPPORTUNITY FOR, MEETING US ENGINEERING AND SKILLED TECHNICAL WORKFORCE NEEDS, AND A PRACTITIONER WHITE PAPER WILL PROVIDE A MORE DETAILED PDF-FORMAT SUMMARY OF THE WORK PRESENTED AT THE WEBINARS AND SUMMIT. THESE MATERIALS WILL INCLUDE OBSERVATIONS, SUGGESTIONS, AND THE EXAMPLES OF BEST PRACTICES ON THE FOLLOWING: POLICIES FOR BUILDING SKILLED TECHNICAL WORKFORCE FOR HIGH-VALUE MANUFACTURING; COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND ATE PROGRAM ADDRESSING WORKFORCE FOR INDUSTRY 4.0; ALTERNATE PATHWAYS, PLATFORMS, AND POLICIES: EDUCATING ENGINEERS AND SKILLED TECHNICAL WORKFORCE; SCALING UP INDUSTRY-EDUCATION COLLABORATION; INDUSTRY 4.0 EDUCATION, POLICIES, PERSPECTIVES, AND PANDEMICS; A CALL FOR ACTION FOR EDUCATION 4.0 PATHWAYS; LEVERAGING NEW PARTNERSHIPS AND WORK/LEARN OPPORTUNITIES FOR WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT; EXPANDING EQUITABLE ACCESS TO ENGINEERING AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION; ROLE OF FUNDING AGENCIES AND INFLUENCERS IN IMPROVING AND ENHANCING EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAMS; AND PREPARING THE WORKFORCE TO MEET SOCIETAL & CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITIES. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: THE ORGANIZATIONAL CLIMATE CHALLENGE: PROMOTING THE RETENTION OF STUDENTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS IN DOCTORAL ENGINEERING PROGRAMS -THE ONGOING LACK OF DIVERSITY IN THE ENGINEERING DOCTORAL WORKFORCE REMAINS A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM WITH FAR-REACHING IMPLICATIONS FOR THE US ECONOMY. THE LONG-TERM VITALITY OF THE US WORKFORCE RELIES ON THE FULL RANGE OF ENGINEERING CAREER PATHWAYS BEING AVAILABLE TO ALL AMERICANS. A DIVERSE STEM WORKFORCE IS MORE CREATIVE AND INNOVATIVE. WHILE THE NUMBER OF WOMEN COMPLETING STEM DOCTORATES HAS RISEN, THE PROPORTION OF WOMEN EARNING ENGINEERING DOCTORATES REMAINS LOW. AND, IN 2019, WHILE 24.1% OF ENGINEERING DOCTORATES WERE EARNED BY WOMEN, ONLY 1.4% WERE EARNED BY HISPANIC, BLACK, AND NATIVE AMERICAN WOMEN (NO NATIVE HAWAIIAN/ PACIFIC ISLANDER WOMEN). DOCTORAL ENGINEERING ATTRITION RATES REVEAL A DISPROPORTIONATELY HIGH LOSS OF STUDENTS FROM GROUPS HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN STEM. THE PROBLEM IS NOT STUDENTS? INABILITY TO COMPLETE THE PH.D. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS, BUT RATHER THAT TALENTED STUDENTS LEAVE ENGINEERING DOCTORAL PROGRAMS BEFORE COMPLETING THEIR DOCTORATES. STUDENT ATTRITION RESULTS IN A LOSS OF HUMAN TALENT TO THE NATIONAL ENDEAVOR OF RESEARCH AND DISCOVERY AT UNIVERSITIES FUELING US ECONOMIC GROWTH. UNWELCOMING ORGANIZATIONAL CLIMATES IN ENGINEERING DOCTORAL PROGRAMS LIKELY CONTRIBUTE TO THIS ATTRITION. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO EXAMINE THE ORGANIZATIONAL CLIMATES OF ENGINEERING DOCTORAL PROGRAMS TO GUIDE EFFORTS THAT PROMOTE THE PERSISTENCE AND RETENTION OF DOCTORAL STUDENTS IN ENGINEERING. THE GOAL OF THIS MIXED-METHODS PROJECT IS TO EXAMINE DOCTORAL STUDENTS? PERCEPTIONS OF THE FACTORS THAT IMPACT THEIR PERSISTENCE IN DEGREE COMPLETION AND THE DIFFERENCES IN EXPERIENCING THOSE FACTORS BASED ON INTERSECTING SOCIAL CATEGORIES. THIS PROJECT ADOPTS AN EXPLICITLY INTERSECTIONAL APPROACH TO THE MEANING AND RELEVANCE OF STUDENTS? BELONGING TO MULTIPLE SOCIAL CATEGORIES, INCLUDING GENDER, RACE/ETHNICITY, AND SEXUAL ORIENTATION, CONSIDERED WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF ENGINEERING DOCTORAL EDUCATION. DRAWING ON ORGANIZATIONAL CLIMATE RESEARCH AND INTERSECTIONALITY THEORY, THE PROJECT?S MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM AIMS TO USE A STUDENT-CENTERED APPROACH TO SHED LIGHT ON MULTIPLE CLIMATE FACTORS (E.G., CLIMATE FOR DIVERSITY, CLIMATE FOR INCLUSION, STUDENT SENSE OF BELONGING, ETC.) BY ENGAGING WITH STUDENTS FROM DIVERSE GROUPS. TO ACHIEVE A COMPREHENSIVE PICTURE OF DEPARTMENTAL CLIMATE AND PERSISTENCE, WHICH MAY DIFFER BY INTERSECTIONAL GROUP, MAJOR, AND INSTITUTION TYPE, ITERATIVE AND COMPLEMENTARY CYCLES OF PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION ARE PLANNED OVER THE FOUR-YEAR PROJECT PERIOD. IN YEAR 1, THE RESEARCHERS AIM TO USE FINDINGS FROM THE QUANTITATIVE PILOT CLIMATE SURVEY APPROACH TO INFORM THE QUALITATIVE DESIGN. THE TEAM AIMS TO REPEAT THIS PROCESS IN YEAR 2 TO DEVELOP, REFINE, AND VALIDATE THE FINAL SURVEY INSTRUMENT, INCLUDING A CLIMATE SCALE WHICH WILL BE SENSITIVE ENOUGH TO ASSESS INTERSECTIONAL PHENOMENA UNIQUE TO STUDENTS FROM DIVERSE GROUPS. THE SCALE WILL BE GROUNDED IN MEASUREMENT INVARIANCE, IN THAT FACTORS WILL BE MEASURED IN THE SAME WAY ACROSS DIFFERENT GROUPS TO REVEAL SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ENGINEERING DOCTORAL STUDENT POPULATIONS. IN YEARS 3 AND 4, THE RESEARCHERS PLAN TO ADMINISTER THE FINAL SURVEY NATIONALLY AND INCORPORATE FOLLOW-UP INTERVIEWS WITH A SUBSAMPLE OF SURVEY RESPONDENTS, USING A MIXED-METHODS APPROACH. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR ENGINEERING EDUCATION, THE TEAM PLANS TO DEPLOY THE CLIMATE SURVEY NATIONALLY TO ENGINEERING DOCTORAL STUDENTS AND TO SHARE SURVEY FINDINGS WITH ENGINEERING DEANS. THIS PROJECT IS SUPPORTED BY NSF'S EHR CORE RESEARCH (ECR) PROGRAM. THE ECR PROGRAM EMPHASIZES FUNDAMENTAL STEM EDUCATION RESEARCH THAT GENERATES FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD. INVESTMENTS ARE MADE IN CRITICAL AREAS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL, BROAD AND ENDURING: STEM LEARNING AND STEM LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS, BROADENING PARTICIPATION IN STEM, AND STEM WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT.
