THIS PROJECT FURTHERS THE MISSION OF THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE AND EFFORTS IN NATURAL AND CULTURALRESOURCE CONSERVATION, PROTECTION, AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY BY PROVIDING FERRY SERVICEBETWEEN STONINGTON AND ISLE AU HAUT IN MID-COAST MAINE TO SERVE AREA RESIDENTS ANDAPPROXIMATELY 10,000 ANNUAL VISITORS TO ACADIA NATIONAL PARK. THE GOAL OF THE PROJECT IS TOPROVIDE A HIGH-QUALITY VISITOR EXPERIENCE AND ENHANCED VISITOR ACCESS TO ACADIA NATIONAL PARK ONISLE AU HAUT, AND TO SUPPORT THE ISLANDS YEAR-ROUND COMMUNITY THROUGH THE OPERATION OF A PUBLICFERRY SERVICE. THE PROJECT WILL SUPPORT THE MANAGEMENT AND USE OF PARKLANDS ON ISLE AU HAUT SOAS NOT TO INTERFERE WITH THE MAINTENANCE OF A VIABLE LOCAL COMMUNITY WITH A TRADITIONAL RESOURCE BASED ECONOMY. IT WILL ALSO PROVIDE THE NPS WITH THE MEANS TO STRICTLY LIMIT VISITATION TO ASSURENEGLIGIBLE ADVERSE IMPACTS ON NATURAL RESOURCES, CONSERVE THE CHARACTER OF THE COMMUNITY, ANDPROTECT THE QUALITY OF THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE.
