COMMUNITY PROJECT FUNDING/CONGRESSIONALLY DIRECTED SPENDING - CONSTRUCTION - PROJECT ABSTRACT MCLAREN OAKLAND 50 N. PERRY ST. PONTIAC, MI 48342 PROJECT DIRECTOR: THERESA ATKINSON CONTACT PHONE NUMBERS: EMAIL ADDRESS: THERESA.ATKINSON1@MCLAREN.ORG WEBSITE ADDRESS: WWW.MCLAREN.ORG/OAKLAND GRANT PROGRAM FUNDS REQUESTED IN THE APPLICATION: $500,000 $500,000 FOR EQUIPMENT: 3DIMENSION HOLOGIC MAMMOGRAPHY SYSTEM INTRODUCTION MCLAREN OAKLAND IS A 318-BED HOSPITAL IN PONTIAC THAT PROVIDES PRIMARY AND SPECIALTY HEALTHCARE SERVICES TO THE GREATER PONTIAC AND OAKLAND COUNTY, MICHIGAN COMMUNITIES. PONTIAC HAS A POVERTY RATE THAT IS TWICE THAT OF THE STATE AT 34.1% AND IS THE ONLY MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED AREA (MUA) IN NORTHERN OAKLAND COUNTY. THE TOTAL POPULATION OF PONTIAC IS APPROXIMATELY 61,000 WITH MORE THAN HALF OF THE POPULATION BEING AFRICAN AMERICAN OR HISPANIC. ACCORDING TO THE STATE OF MICHIGAN, FEMALE BREAST CANCER INCIDENCE IN OAKLAND COUNTY (PER 100,000) ARE HIGHER AT 135.8 THAN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN WHICH HAS A RATE OF 124.0 AND COMPARABLY IN THE UNITED STATES WITH 125.2. PONTIAC HAD AN ESTIMATED 29 BREAST CANCER DEATHS PER 100,000 FEMALES IN 2020, COMPARED TO AN AVERAGE OF 23.6 PER 100,000 FEMALES, PER CITY HEALTH DASHBOARD. THE OVERARCHING GOAL OF THIS GRANT IS TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO DIAGNOSTIC TESTING TOOLS AND TREATMENT OPTIONS TO A COMMUNITY THAT FACES SERIOUS CANCER RISKS WITH LIMITED RESOURCES. BY PLACING A 3D MAMMOGRAPHY MACHINE IN AN UNDERSERVED AREA, HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS CAN ENSURE THAT ALL WOMEN, REGARDLESS OF THEIR SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS, HAVE ACCESS TO STATE-OF-THE-ART BREAST CANCER SCREENING. THIS PROMOTES HEALTH EQUITY AND REDUCES DISPARITIES IN CANCER CARE. WORK PLAN TO SOLVE THE IMBALANCED IMPACT OF BREAST CANCER IN DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES, ACCESS TO CARE MUST BE THE FIRST STEP. WE PLAN TO IDENTIFY UNDERSERVED COMMUNITY MEMBERS THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH PHYSICIANS, LOCAL COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT ORGANIZATIONS, CHURCHES AS WE LL AS LOCAL AND COUNTY MUNICIPALITIES. WITH THESE PARTNERSHIPS, WE WILL DEVELOP A MAMMOGRAPHY OUTREACH PROGRAM IN PONTIAC AND SURROUNDING AREAS TO APPROPRIATELY EDUCATE AND POTENTIALLY DIAGNOSE AND TREAT BREAST CANCER. ACCESS POINTS WILL BE ESTABLISHED FOR PATIENTS WHO CAN’T REACH OR AFFORD TRADITIONAL MODELS OF CARE OR HAVE BEEN NEGLECTED BY FEE-FOR-SERVICE CARE THAT PRIORITIZES PATIENT VOLUME. MCLAREN OAKLAND WOULD THEN WORK TO CREATE A SUSTAINABLE BREAST SCREENING PROGRAM MITIGATED THROUGH ABUNDANT ACCESS, EDUCATION, AND AFFORDABILITY, TO CONTINUE TO SERVE A DISPARATE POPULATION, WHICH WOULD ULTIMATELY IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND LONGEVITY OF LIFE IN OUR COMMUNITY. EQUIPMENT THIS GRANT WOULD ASSIST IN PURCHASING THE APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY: A MAMMOGRAPHY UNIT THAT CAN PERFORM 3D AND 2D MAMMOGRAPHY IMAGING. THE GRANT WOULD CREATE A SUSTAINABLE BREAST SCREENING PROGRAM ALLOWING FOR A PATIENT CENTERED, TECHNOLOGY DRIVEN SOLUTION TO A MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED AREA.
