NEH FUNDS WILL PROVIDE FACULTY WITH TIME TO ENVISION AND IMPLEMENT STRATEGIC INITIATIVES TO REENERGIZE THE HUMANITIES ACROSS CAMPUS IN THREE AREAS: 1) COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE (COP) TO DEVELOP SCHOLARSHIP FRAMEWORKS, SCHOLARLY PRODUCTS, AND CONNECT LEARNING TO AREAS OF STRATEGIC AND LONG-TERM SIGNIFICANCE; 2) ENGAGING NEW LEARNING COMMUNITIES TO REACH NEW LEARNERS THROUGH PROGRAMS AT OR PATHWAYS TO CALVIN; AND 3) COMMUNITY AND COMMITMENTS, A FOUNDATIONAL HUMANITIES COURSE IN CALVIN?S NEW CORE CURRICULUM THAT INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO A LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION AND TO THREE AREAS WE CONSIDER ESSENTIAL TO FOSTER ENGAGED CITIZENSHIP: DIVERSITY AND DIFFERENCE, ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY, AND GLOBAL REGIONS AND CULTURES. THE PROPOSED INVESTMENT WILL RETAIN TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITIONS IN THE HUMANITIES (3.2 FTE) AND STAFF WHO SUPPORT HUMANITIES PROGRAMMING (.5 FTE), REGAINING MOMENTUM FOR RENEWAL.] [PURPOSE: TO COMPLEMENT CALVIN UNIVERSITY?S STRATEGIC PLAN, VISION 2030, WITH NEW CURRICULAR PROGRAMS IN ORDER TO BUILD CAMPUS COHESION AND INCREASE CAMPUS MORALE, WHICH HAS SUFFERED DURING THE CURRENT PANDEMIC. ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: FACULTY AND STAFF WILL DEDICATE TIME TO TWO GENERAL AREAS OF INQUIRY AND PROGRAM INVESTMENT: ?COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE,? WHICH COMPRISE GROUPS OF FACULTY AND STAFF DEVELOPING SCHOLARSHIP FRAMEWORKS, SCHOLARLY PRODUCTS, AND CONNECTIONS TO LEARNING IN AREAS OF STRATEGIC AND LONG-TERM SIGNIFICANCE; AND ?ENGAGING NEW LEARNING COMMUNITIES,? WHICH WILL BRING TOGETHER GROUPS OF FACULTY AND STAFF FOCUSED ON REACHING NEW LEARNERS (NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENTS SUCH AS WORKING ADULTS AND INCARCERATED CITIZENS) THROUGH PROGRAMS AT OR PATHWAYS TO THE UNIVERSITY. THE UNIVERSITY WILL ALSO USE THE GRANT TO LAUNCH A NEW FOUNDATIONAL HUMANITIES COURSE THAT WILL BE PART OF ITS REVISED CORE CURRICULUM. EXPECTED OUTCOMES: THE RECIPIENT HAS IDENTIFIED SIX NEW COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE THAT WILL BE DEVELOPED THROUGH THE FUNDED PROGRAM. THESE COURSE CLUSTERS WILL COVER TOPICS RANGING FROM THE HUMANITIES AND ARTS TO PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. A NEW CORE COURSE, COMMUNITY AND COMMITMENTS (CORE 100), WILL ALSO BE DEVELOPED. ALL INCOMING AND TRANSFER STUDENTS WILL TAKE THIS NEW COURSE DURING THEIR FIRST SEMESTER AT CALVIN UNIVERSITY. THE FUNCTIONALITY OF DYNAMIC ASSEMBLIES IN MANY PROCESSES (SUCH AS CATALYSIS AND SEPARATION) DEPENDS ON MULTIPLE CHEMICAL SPECIES OPERATING IN CONCERT WITH EACH OTHER. HOWEVER, ANALYZING MULTIPART MIXTURES WITHOUT SEPARATING THEM IS ESPECIALLY CHALLENGING. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO ADDRESS THIS CHALLENGE BY DEVELOPING ANALYTICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL TOOLS THAT WILL BE MADE ACCESSIBLE TO OTHER SCIENTISTS VIA A WEBSITE MAINTAINED BY PROF. VANDER GRIEND. THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE RESEARCH TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES TO UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE PREPARATION OF STEM WORKFORCE. FOR THIS PROJECT, PROF. VANDER GRIEND WILL RELY ON TWO MAIN APPROACHES. THE FIRST APPROACH WILL EXPLORE THE APPLICATION OF THE NANOREACTOR PROGRAM, WHICH IS A CUTTING-EDGE COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY TOOL DEVELOPED BY PROF. MARTINEZ AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY, TO SUPRAMOLECULAR SOLUTION MIXTURES. IN THE SECOND APPROACH, PROF. VANDER GRIEND WILL LEVERAGE THE CHEMOMETRIC MODELING OF SPECTROSCOPIC TITRATION DATA TO SIMULTANEOUSLY CHARACTERIZE THE ENTIRE ENSEMBLE OF CHEMICAL SPECIES THAT PARTICIPATE IN THE DYNAMIC EQUILIBRIUM PROCESSES. THIS PROGRAM WILL PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO AN INSTITUTION TO INVESTIGATE AND MONITOR THE EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINANTS ON THE BREEDING POPULATION NUMBERS, REPRODUCTION, AND IMMUNOLOGICAL HEALTH OF FISH EATING BIRDS FOUND IN THE GREAT LAKES AREAS OF CONCERN IN SAGINAW BAY AND RIVER RAISIN, BUILDING ON PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS GOAL, THE RECIPIENT INSTITUTION MUST HAVE A PROVEN RECORD OF EXPERIENCE IN WORKING WITH THESE TYPES OF BIRD COLONIES IN THE GREAT LAKES AND MEASURING SPECIFIC IMMUNOLOGICAL ENDPOINTS IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN SCIENTIFIC INTEGRITY AND COMPARABILITY OF DATA. IN ADDITION TO THE CONTINUING WORK ON COLONIAL WATERBIRD POPULATIONS, REPRODUCTION, AND IMMUNE FUNCTION THE RECIPIENT INSTITUTION WILL ENSURE THE SAME ENDPOINTS AT BELLOWS ISLAND, AND EVALUATE POTENTIAL INFLUENCES CONTAMINANTS OF EMERGING CONCERN TO THOSE ENDPOINTS. RESULTING DATA WILL BE USED TO INFORM THE WILDLIFE POPULATIONS AND REPRODUCTIVE/DEFORMITIES BENEFICIAL USE IMPAIRMENT S IN MICHIGAN'S AOCS. ADDRESSING THESE BUIS SUPPORTS THE OBJECTIVES OF THE ''FOCUS AREA- TOXIC SUBSTANCES AND AREAS OF CONCERN'' OF THE GREAT LAKES RESTORATION INITIATIVE (GLRI) (15.662) ACTION PLAN II (2015 - 2019).

THIS STUDY HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT WITH CONTINUED INPUT AND SUPPORT FOR ANNUAL MONITORING FROM STATE PARTNERS IN THE MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT GREAT LAKES AND ENERGY (EGLE) OFFICE OF THE GREAT LAKES. FURTHER, THE PI AND THEIR LAB WILL COORDINATE STATEWIDE HERRING GULL CONTAMINANTS ASSESSMENTS WHICH SUPPORT LONG TERM BI-NATIONAL (US AND CANADA) EFFORT TO MONITOR HERRING GULL EGG CONTAMINANTS TRENDS VITAL TO ASSESSING BASINWIDE HEALTH. THIS YEAR, THE PI WILL PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT IN CONTAMINANTS OF MUTUAL CONCERN LAKE AREA MANAGEMENT PLANS MONITORING BY COLLECTING, PROCESSING, AND ARCHIVING HERRING GULL EGGS IN TARGETED SUPERIOR AND HURON COLONIES.

CHICK HEALTH WILL BE EVALUATED BY GROWTH, WEIGHT PARAMETERS AS WELL AS IMMUNE RESPONSE ASSAYS DEVELOPED BY DR. GRASMAN. DR. GRASMAN WILL COORDINATE AND OVERSEE CONTAMINANT PREPARATION OF EGGS NOT ONLY FROM STUDY AND REFERENCE SITES BUT OTHER MONITORING LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT MICHIGAN REQUESTED BY STATE AND FEDERAL PARTNERS. PLASMA SAMPLES MAY ALSO BE USED FOR CONTAMINANT CORRELATIONS. USFWS WILL CONSULT ON ALL ASPECTS OF THE STUDY, ASSIST IN SAMPLE SHIPMENT, LABORATORY CONTRACTING, SITE PERMISSIONS, REPORT AND PRESENTATION DEVELOPMENT, AND DISSEMINATION OF RESULTING DATA TO MANAGEMENT AGENCIES.

THESE PROBLEMS MEAN THAT MANY ORGANIZATIONS NOW LIMIT THE USE OF GENERATIVE TECHNOLOGY IN CONTENT THAT THEY PUBLISH. THIS PROJECT EXPLORES HOW COMPUTER SYSTEMS CAN HELP WRITERS STRUCTURE THEIR DOCUMENTS. THE SYSTEM WOULD NOT GENERATE WORDS FOR WRITERS. THE RESEARCH TEAM IS A DIVERSE GROUP OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN VARIOUS MAJORS. THEY WILL IMPROVE THEIR SKILLS IN BUILDING TOOLS THAT USE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI). THESE TOOLS WILL HELP PEOPLE IMPROVE THEIR WRITING AND COMMUNICATION. THE PROJECT SEEKS TO STUDY HOW HUMAN WRITERS CAN INTERACT WITH INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS DURING THE REVISION STAGE. THIS STAGE OCCURS BETWEEN THE INITIAL COMPOSITION AND THE FINAL EDITING FOR MECHANICS. THE RESEARCHERS HAVE ALREADY PROTOTYPED SEVERAL POSSIBLE INTERACTIONS. THE TEAM WILL BEGIN BY COMPLETING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THESE INTERACTIONS. THE TEAM WILL THEN REFINE AND TEST THOSE IMPLEMENTATIONS. TESTING WILL INCLUDE SIMULATED AND AUTHENTIC REVISION CONTEXTS. PARTICIPANTS FOR THESE EVALUATIONS WILL BE MAINLY UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND FACULTY. PARTICIPANTS WILL PERFORM TYPICAL WRITING TASKS EXPECTED FOR CLASSES AND PUBLICATIONS. R42 MCH SECONDARY DATA ANALYSIS RESEARCH - PROBLEM: ALTHOUGH THE UNITED STATES (U.S) INFANT MORTALITY HIT HISTORIC LOW IN 2020, IT IS WORSE THAN OTHER COMPARABLE NATIONS (AMERICA’S HEALTH RANKINGS, 2022). RACIAL DISPARITIES REMAIN IN INFANT MORTALITY AND BIRTH OUTCOMES, ESPECIALLY FOR NON-HISPANIC BLACK WOMEN (ELY & DRISCOLL, 2022). POOR BIRTH OUTCOMES HAVE BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH PRENATAL BEHAVIORS SUCH AS SMOKING, ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION, AND LATE OR NO PRENATAL CARE (LIU ET AL., 2022). HEALTHY PEOPLE 2030’S GOAL IS FOR 80.5% OF WOMEN TO INITIATE PRENATAL CARE (PNC) WITHIN THE FIRST TRIMESTER. A MAJOR OBSTACLE TO TIMELY PNC IS THAT IT CANNOT BE INITIATED UNTIL A WOMAN RECOGNIZES THAT SHE IS PREGNANT (AYOOLA ET AL., 2010). THE TIME OF PREGNANCY RECOGNITION IS CRUCIAL TO FETAL DEVELOPMENT, INITIATION OF PNC, AND BIRTH OUTCOMES. THIS PROJECT IS IN LINE WITH MCHB PROGRAM’S GOAL TO PROMOTE ACCESS TO HIGH QUALITY AND EQUITABLE HEALTH SERVICES (ADEQUATE PNC) TO OPTIMIZE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF MOTHERS AND THEIR CHILDREN. GOAL(S) AND OBJECTIVES: THIS STUDY EXAMINES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TIME OF PREGNANCY RECOGNITION, TIME OF PNC INITIATION, AND NUMBER OF PNC VISITS IN THE U.S. THE FOCUS OF THIS STUDY IS: 1) TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT TO WHICH EARLY RECOGNITION OF A PREGNANCY (CONFIRMED PREGNANCY WITHIN 6 WEEKS OF CONCEPTION) PREDICTS EARLY INITIATION OF PNC (START PNC WITHIN 12 WEEKS OF CONCEPTION) AND THE NUMBER OF PNC VISITS. 2) TO EXPLORE HOW EARLY PREGNANCY RECOGNITION AFFECTS BIRTH OUTCOMES SUCH AS GESTATIONAL AGE AT BIRTH, BIRTH WEIGHT, RATES OF ADMISSION TO NICUS AND INFANT MORTALITY IN THE GENERAL POPULATION AND AMONG RACIAL MINORITY GROUPS SUCH AS NON-HISPANIC BLACK, NATIVE AMERICAN/ALASKAN NATIVE AND OTHER MINORITY GROUPS. PROPOSED DATA SETS AND TARGET POPULATION(S): THE PROPOSED STUDY IS A SECONDARY ANALYSIS OF PHASE 8 (2016 TO 2020) MULTI-STATE DATA FROM THE PREGNANCY RISK ASSESSMENT AND MONITORING SYSTEM (PRAMS) PROGRAM. PRAMS IS A POPULATION-BASED SURVEY THAT IS PART OF THE CENT ERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION (CDC) INITIATIVE TO REDUCE INFANT MORTALITY AND LOW BIRTH WEIGHT AND PROMOTE SAFE MOTHERHOOD. PRAMS IS AN ON-GOING STATE-BASED SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM OF MATERNAL BEHAVIORS, ATTITUDES, AND EXPERIENCES BEFORE, DURING, AND SHORTLY AFTER PREGNANCY (CDC (C), 2022). THE PRAMS SAMPLE IS DRAWN FROM THE JURISDICTION’S BIRTH CERTIFICATE FILE. EACH PARTICIPATING SITE SAMPLES BETWEEN 1,000 AND 3,000 WOMEN PER YEAR (CDC (C), 2022). STATES STRATIFY THEIR SAMPLE BY CHARACTERISTICS OF PUBLIC HEALTH INTEREST SUCH AS MATERNAL AGE, RACE/ETHNICITY, GEOGRAPHIC AREA OF RESIDENCE, AND INFANT BIRTH WEIGHT (SHULMAN ET AL., 2018). PRODUCTS: THIS RESEARCH WILL PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY TO MENTOR TWO JUNIOR INVESTIGATORS IN SECONDARY DATA ANALYSIS. AT LEAST TWO MANUSCRIPTS WILL BE PUBLISHED BASED ON THE FINDINGS OF THIS SECONDARY ANALYSIS IN PEER REVIEWED JOURNALS WITH RELATIVELY HIGH IMPACT FACTORS.
