| Department of Health and Human Services | ACETASTAT VALIDATION AND COMMERCIALIZATION - JAMES, LAURA P PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT ACETAMINOPHEN (APAP) IS THE MOST COMMON DRUG USED FOR THE TREATMENT OF PAIN AND FEVER AROUND THE WORLD. IT IS ALSO THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF LIFE THREATENING DRUG-INDUCED LIVER DAMAGE. UNFORTUNATELY, PHYSICIANS HAVE NO SPECIFIC TEST AVAILABLE TO THEM TO CONFIRM THE DIAGNOSIS OF APAP LIVER INJURY. CURRENTLY, PHYSICIANS RELY ON PATIENT HISTORY AND NON-SPECIFIC TESTS OF LIVER INJURY WHEN EVALUATING PATIENTS WITH LIVER INJURY DUE TO APAP. ACETAMINOPHEN TOXICITY DIAGNOSTICS, LLC HAS DEVELOPED A RAPID LATERAL FLOW IMMUNOASSAY THAT CAN DETECT APAP LIVER INJURY. OUR TEST, KNOWN AS ACETASTAT, IS FAST, EASY AND SPECIFIC TO APAP LIVER INJURY. OUR PLANS FOR THIS COMMERCIALIZATION READINESS PROGRAM PROPOSAL INCLUDE OPTIMIZING ACETASTAT IN A COLLABORATION WITH DCN DIAGNOSTICS. SECONDLY, WE WILL PRODUCE ACETASTAT ACCORDING TO CURRENT GOOD MANUFACTURING PRACTICE (CGMP). FINALLY, WE WILL COMPLETE IN VITRO VALIDATION STUDIES AND PERFORM A MULTI-SITE CLINICAL TRIAL TO EXAMINE THE CLINICAL PERFORMANCE OF ACETASTAT. IT CAN LEAD TO SERIOUS PROBLEMS, INCLUDING POOR RELATIONSHIPS, FAMILY STRESS, MISBEHAVIOR, PROBLEMS AT SCHOOL, JOB FAILURE, OBESITY, AND AN INCREASED RISK FOR ACCIDENTAL INJURIES. INFORMATION AND EDUCATION ON ADHD THAT IS BASED ON BEST EVIDENCE IS KEY TO PROPERLY MANAGING ADHD. CHADD, INC. (CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH ATTENTION-DEFICIT/HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER) IS THE NATION’S LEADING NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO IMPROVING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN, ADULTS, AND FAMILIES AFFECTED BY ADHD. SINCE 2002, CHADD’S NATIONAL RESOURCE CENTER ON ADHD (NRC) HAS SERVED AS THE CLEARINGHOUSE FOR EVIDENCE-BASED INFORMATION ON ADHD, SUPPORTING INDIVIDUALS WITH THE DISORDER, THEIR FAMILIES, AND THE HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS AND EDUCATORS INVOLVED IN THEIR LIVES. CHADD’S NRC PROPOSES TO IMPLEMENT EVIDENCE-BASED HEALTH PROMOTION PROGRAMS FOR ADHD. THE STRATEGIES AND ACTIVITIES OF THESE PROGRAMS WILL IDENTIFY THE NEEDS THAT INDIVIDUALS WITH ADHD, THEIR FAMILIES, HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS, AND EDUCATORS HAVE FOR MANAGING ADHD. CHADD’S NRC WILL MEET THESE NEEDS BY CREATING COMMUNICATION AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS, PRODUCTS, TOOLS AND SUPPORTS THAT ARE BASED ON RELIABLE EVIDENCE AND ARE APPROPRIATE FOR EACH OF THE AUDIENCES. SINCE ADHD EXISTS FOR ALL RACES, ETHNICITIES, AND IN ALL GEOGRAPHIC AREAS, THE PROGRAMS WILL REACH OUT TO A DIVERSE AUDIENCE, ESPECIALLY TO THE COMMUNITIES AFFECTED BY HEALTH AND EDUCATIONAL DISPARITIES. FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH ADHD, THEIR FAMILIES, AND COMMUNITIES, THE PROGRAMS WILL IMPROVE THEIR ACCESS TO RELIABLE INFORMATION, SUPPORT, AND SERVICES THAT WILL IMPROVE THEIR LIVES. THE PROGRAMS WILL PROVIDE EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND SUPPORT TO HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS SO THAT THEY CAN PROPERLY DIAGNOSE AND TREAT PEOPLE WITH ADHD. EDUCATORS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH EDUCATION AND TRAINING SO THAT THEY WILL USE EVIDENCE-BASED TEACHING STRATEGIES TO HELP THEIR STUDENTS WITH ADHD SUCCEED IN SCHOOL. CHADD’S RESIDENT EXPERT AND PROFESSIONAL ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS WILL REVIEW THE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE FOR ALL THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES THAT ARE DEVELOPED. THE WAIT TIMES FOR ECHOCARDIOGRAMS CAN BE UPWARDS OF 12 WEEKS WITH APPROXIMATELY 7 MILLION PERFORMED ANNUALLY IN THE U.S. THIS ISSUE IS COMPOUNDED BY A NATIONWIDE SHORTAGE OF SONOGRAPHERS, DISPARITIES IN THE DISTRIBUTION OF THESE PROFESSIONALS, AND HIGH BURNOUT RATES LINKED TO WORKPLACE INJURIES FROM REPETITIVE TASKS. AN ECHOCARDIOGRAM IS THE FIRST LINE OF CARE FOR PATIENTS PRESENTING WITH ACUTE SYMPTOMS SUGGESTIVE OF SOME LIFE THREATENING CONDITIONS. THESE INCLUDE MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION, ACUTE VALVULAR REGURGITATION, STENOSIS, CARDIAC TAMPONADE, CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE, CEREBROVASCULAR ACCIDENT (?STROKE?), ENDOCARDITIS, PERICARDITIS, LIFE THREATENING ARRHYTHMIAS, AND MYOCARDITIS. 1. INCREASES THE THROUGHPUT PER SONOGRAPHER BY ENABLING SIMULTANEOUS SUPERVISION OF DATA ACQUISITION, 2.REDUCES WORKPLACE INJURIES THAT SHORTEN CARDIAC SONOGRAPHERS? CAREERS, AND 3. REDUCES THE NEED FOR A COLLOCATED WORKFORCE OF SPECIALIZED SKILL SETS AND THEREBY INCREASING ACCESS TO CARE. IN THE UNITED STATES, HEART DISEASE IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH KILLING ONE PERSON EVERY 33 SECONDS. THE FIRST STEP TO HELP SOLVE THIS PROBLEM IS FAST ACCESS TO DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING SUCH AS ECHOCARDIOGRAMS. THIS SMALL BUSINESS INNOVATION RESEARCH (SBIR) PHASE II PROJECT BUILDING UPON PHASE I RESULTS THAT SHOWED THE CAPABILITY OF THE ROBOTIC SYSTEM TO CAPTURE HIGH-QUALITY IMAGES FROM A SINGLE TRANSTHORACIC ECHOCARDIOGRAM (TTE) VIEW USING MACHINE VISION TO IDENTIFY PROPER PROBE DEPLOYMENT ON THE BODY AND USING ROBOTIC CONTROLS TO SAFELY MOVE THE PROBE WITHOUT SURPASSING SAFE PRESSURE THRESHOLDS NOR LOSING CONTACT WITH THE SKIN. PHASE II WILL BUILD UPON THIS ROBUST FOUNDATION, AIMING TO VALIDATE AND BROADEN THE TECHNOLOGY'S CAPABILITIES TO MEET THE EXACTING STANDARDS OF OUR CUSTOMERS. THE PROJECT WILL FURTHER DEVELOP THE ROBOT'S IMAGING PROFICIENCY TO COVER THE COMPLETE ECHOCARDIOGRAM PROTOCOL INCLUDING THE PARASTERNAL LONG AXIS (PLAX), PARASTERNAL SHORT AXIS (PSAX), APICAL VIEWS, SUBCOSTAL VIEW, AND SUPRASTERNAL NOTCH VIEW. ULTIMATELY, THIS ALLOWS THE OPERATOR TO FOCUS ON THE OBJECTIVE INSTEAD OF OPERATING THE ROBOT. THIS PROJECT WILL ALLOW TELE-ROBOTICS TO BECOME A VIABLE SOLUTION IN UNCERTAIN ENVIRONMENTS WHERE TRADITIONAL CONTROL SCHEMES, WITH INHERENT LATENCY AND PRECISION ISSUES, CURRENTLY PREVENT ADOPTION OF ROBOTIC SOLUTIONS. THIS BENEFITS APPLICATIONS IN WHICH A HIGHER DEGREE OF EXPERTISE AND DECISION-MAKING IS REQUIRED TO PERFORM TASKS IN A DANGEROUS OR INACCESSIBLE LOCATION. INSTEAD OF DELAYING CARE TO DON AND DOFF PERSONAL-PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT, NURSES CAN INSTANTLY WORK THROUGH THE EYES, EARS, AND ARMS OF THESE ROBOTS. THE KEY INNOVATION IN THIS PHASE I PROJECT IS NOVEL AI WHICH WILL INTUIT THE INTENT OF THE OPERATOR TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE TASKS. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL DEVELOP A ROBOT CONTROL POLICY WHICH OBSERVES THE ROBOT?S CURRENT ENVIRONMENT AS WELL AS THE USERS CONTROL INPUTS, AND ACTUATES A ROBOT TO ACHIEVE THE DESIRED TASK. EFFECTIVE STROKE RISK PREDICTION IS FLAWED IN CKD PATIENTS, BECAUSE 1) COMORBIDITIES OFTEN REMAIN UNDIAGNOSED, 2) STROKE RISK STRATIFICATION SCHEMES DO NOT CONSIDER STAGES OF CKD, AND 3) THE DETECTION OF STROKE RISK VARIATIONS DUE TO DIALYSIS REQUIRES REAL-TIME RISK MONITORING, WHICH IS UNAVAILABLE TO DATE. THE REAL-TIME MONITORING OF THE STROKE RISK IN CKD PATIENTS, AND IN PARTICULAR FOR THOSE UNDERGOING DIALYSIS, IS LIKELY TO INFLUENCE ADOPTED THERAPEUTIC STRATEGIES AND PROMOTE A MORE PERSONALIZED THERAPEUTIC APPROACH. BETTER CARE AND PREVENTION THROUGH MONITORING OF THESE HIGH-RISK PATIENTS WILL REDUCE MORTALITY RATES AND THEIR HIGH PER CAPITA COST, WHICH IS FIVE TIMES HIGHER THAN THE AVERAGE HEALTHCARE SPENDING. BIOTRICITY IS DEVELOPING BIOFLUX-AI, AN INNOVATIVE SYSTEM FOR REAL-TIME MONITORING AND PREDICTION OF STROKE EPISODES IN CKD PATIENTS. BIOFLUX-AI COMBINES AN FDA-APPROVED, HIGH-PRECISION, SMALL MOBILE CARDIAC TELEMETRY (MCT) DEVICE WITH AI-DRIVEN ALGORITHMS SPECIFICALLY TRAINED FOR THE PREDICTION OF STROKE IN STAGE 4 AND 5 CKD PATIENTS. BIOTRICITY HAS PREVIOUSLY GENERATED AND VALIDATED ALGORITHMS FOR THE AUTOMATED DETECTION OF ECG ABNORMALITIES, INCLUDING ATRIAL FIBRILLATION (AF). GIVEN THE STRONG ASSOCIATION OF AF WITH INCREASED RISK OF BLOOD CLOT FORMATION AND HENCE, ISCHEMIC STROKE IN CKD PATIENTS, BIOTRICITY PROPOSES TO COMBINE THE DETECTION OF THIS ARRHYTHMIA WITH OTHER STROKE RISK FACTORS OF CKD PATIENTS (AGE, WEIGHT, HEIGHT, BMI, CKD STATUS, DIABETES, HEART DISEASE) AND ECG PARAMETERS TO PREDICT STROKE RISK IN REAL-TIME. TO THIS AIM, IN THIS SBIR PHASE I PROJECT A CONVOLUTIONAL NEURAL NETWORK ALGORITHM, WHICH WILL INCORPORATE ALL THESE RISK FACTORS, WILL BE DEVELOPED, TRAINED AND VALIDATED. ACETASTAT VALIDATION AND COMMERCIALIZATION - JAMES, LAURA P PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT ACETAMINOPHEN (APAP) IS THE MOST COMMON DRUG USED FOR THE TREATMENT OF PAIN AND FEVER AROUND THE WORLD. IT IS ALSO THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF LIFE THREATENING DRUG-INDUCED LIVER DAMAGE. UNFORTUNATELY, PHYSICIANS HAVE NO SPECIFIC TEST AVAILABLE TO THEM TO CONFIRM THE DIAGNOSIS OF APAP LIVER INJURY. CURRENTLY, PHYSICIANS RELY ON PATIENT HISTORY AND NON-SPECIFIC TESTS OF LIVER INJURY WHEN EVALUATING PATIENTS WITH LIVER INJURY DUE TO APAP. ACETAMINOPHEN TOXICITY DIAGNOSTICS, LLC HAS DEVELOPED A RAPID LATERAL FLOW IMMUNOASSAY THAT CAN DETECT APAP LIVER INJURY. OUR TEST, KNOWN AS ACETASTAT, IS FAST, EASY AND SPECIFIC TO APAP LIVER INJURY. OUR PLANS FOR THIS COMMERCIALIZATION READINESS PROGRAM PROPOSAL INCLUDE OPTIMIZING ACETASTAT IN A COLLABORATION WITH DCN DIAGNOSTICS. EDUCATORS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH EDUCATION AND TRAINING SO THAT THEY WILL USE EVIDENCE-BASED TEACHING STRATEGIES TO HELP THEIR STUDENTS WITH ADHD SUCCEED IN SCHOOL. CHADD’S RESIDENT EXPERT AND PROFESSIONAL ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS WILL REVIEW THE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE FOR ALL THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES THAT ARE DEVELOPED. CHADD WILL COLLABORATE WITH THE CDC TO MEET PROGRAM GOALS AND SUPPORT CDC’S INTERESTS. CHADD WILL ALSO COLLABORATE WITH VARIOUS ADHD EXPERTS AND PROFESSIONAL GROUPS, INCLUDING THE ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADHD ORGANIZING COMMITTEE, TO DEVELOP EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS AND EDUCATORS. CHADD’S ADHD COMMUNITIES TOGETHER (ACT) PROGRAM WILL CONTINUE TO REACH RACIAL, ETHNIC, AND RURAL COMMUNITIES THROUGH NEW AND EXISTING COLLABORATIONS. TO INCREASE DISSEMINATION OF PROGRAM MATERIALS, CHADD WILL COLLABORATE WITH OTHER MENTAL HEALTH AND EDUCATOR ASSOCIATIONS. THE WAIT TIMES FOR ECHOCARDIOGRAMS CAN BE UPWARDS OF 12 WEEKS WITH APPROXIMATELY 7 MILLION PERFORMED ANNUALLY IN THE U.S. THIS ISSUE IS COMPOUNDED BY A NATIONWIDE SHORTAGE OF SONOGRAPHERS, DISPARITIES IN THE DISTRIBUTION OF THESE PROFESSIONALS, AND HIGH BURNOUT RATES LINKED TO WORKPLACE INJURIES FROM REPETITIVE TASKS. AN ECHOCARDIOGRAM IS THE FIRST LINE OF CARE FOR PATIENTS PRESENTING WITH ACUTE SYMPTOMS SUGGESTIVE OF SOME LIFE THREATENING CONDITIONS. THESE INCLUDE MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION, ACUTE VALVULAR REGURGITATION, STENOSIS, CARDIAC TAMPONADE, CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE, CEREBROVASCULAR ACCIDENT (?STROKE?), ENDOCARDITIS, PERICARDITIS, LIFE THREATENING ARRHYTHMIAS, AND MYOCARDITIS. 1. INCREASES THE THROUGHPUT PER SONOGRAPHER BY ENABLING SIMULTANEOUS SUPERVISION OF DATA ACQUISITION, 2.REDUCES WORKPLACE INJURIES THAT SHORTEN CARDIAC SONOGRAPHERS? CAREERS, AND 3. REDUCES THE NEED FOR A COLLOCATED WORKFORCE OF SPECIALIZED SKILL SETS AND THEREBY INCREASING ACCESS TO CARE. IN THE UNITED STATES, HEART DISEASE IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH KILLING ONE PERSON EVERY 33 SECONDS. THE FIRST STEP TO HELP SOLVE THIS PROBLEM IS FAST ACCESS TO DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING SUCH AS ECHOCARDIOGRAMS. THIS SMALL BUSINESS INNOVATION RESEARCH (SBIR) PHASE II PROJECT BUILDING UPON PHASE I RESULTS THAT SHOWED THE CAPABILITY OF THE ROBOTIC SYSTEM TO CAPTURE HIGH-QUALITY IMAGES FROM A SINGLE TRANSTHORACIC ECHOCARDIOGRAM (TTE) VIEW USING MACHINE VISION TO IDENTIFY PROPER PROBE DEPLOYMENT ON THE BODY AND USING ROBOTIC CONTROLS TO SAFELY MOVE THE PROBE WITHOUT SURPASSING SAFE PRESSURE THRESHOLDS NOR LOSING CONTACT WITH THE SKIN. PHASE II WILL BUILD UPON THIS ROBUST FOUNDATION, AIMING TO VALIDATE AND BROADEN THE TECHNOLOGY'S CAPABILITIES TO MEET THE EXACTING STANDARDS OF OUR CUSTOMERS. THE PROJECT WILL FURTHER DEVELOP THE ROBOT'S IMAGING PROFICIENCY TO COVER THE COMPLETE ECHOCARDIOGRAM PROTOCOL INCLUDING THE PARASTERNAL LONG AXIS (PLAX), PARASTERNAL SHORT AXIS (PSAX), APICAL VIEWS, SUBCOSTAL VIEW, AND SUPRASTERNAL NOTCH VIEW. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO IMPROVE USABILITY ACROSS DIVERSE PATIENT DEMOGRAPHICS AND VALIDATE ITS PERFORMANCE AND USABILITY IN REAL-WORLD CLINICAL SETTINGS. ADDITIONALLY, WE PLAN TO EXPLORE THE TECHNOLOGY'S APPLICATION TO OTHER ULTRASOUND PROCEDURES PERFORMED ON THE ABDOMEN, ESTABLISHING THE TRANSFORMATIONAL AND PLATFORM POTENTIAL OF THE TECHNOLOGY. ULTIMATELY, THIS ALLOWS THE OPERATOR TO FOCUS ON THE OBJECTIVE INSTEAD OF OPERATING THE ROBOT. THIS PROJECT WILL ALLOW TELE-ROBOTICS TO BECOME A VIABLE SOLUTION IN UNCERTAIN ENVIRONMENTS WHERE TRADITIONAL CONTROL SCHEMES, WITH INHERENT LATENCY AND PRECISION ISSUES, CURRENTLY PREVENT ADOPTION OF ROBOTIC SOLUTIONS. THIS BENEFITS APPLICATIONS IN WHICH A HIGHER DEGREE OF EXPERTISE AND DECISION-MAKING IS REQUIRED TO PERFORM TASKS IN A DANGEROUS OR INACCESSIBLE LOCATION. INSTEAD OF DELAYING CARE TO DON AND DOFF PERSONAL-PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT, NURSES CAN INSTANTLY WORK THROUGH THE EYES, EARS, AND ARMS OF THESE ROBOTS. THE KEY INNOVATION IN THIS PHASE I PROJECT IS NOVEL AI WHICH WILL INTUIT THE INTENT OF THE OPERATOR TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE TASKS. EFFECTIVE STROKE RISK PREDICTION IS FLAWED IN CKD PATIENTS, BECAUSE 1) COMORBIDITIES OFTEN REMAIN UNDIAGNOSED, 2) STROKE RISK STRATIFICATION SCHEMES DO NOT CONSIDER STAGES OF CKD, AND 3) THE DETECTION OF STROKE RISK VARIATIONS DUE TO DIALYSIS REQUIRES REAL-TIME RISK MONITORING, WHICH IS UNAVAILABLE TO DATE. THE REAL-TIME MONITORING OF THE STROKE RISK IN CKD PATIENTS, AND IN PARTICULAR FOR THOSE UNDERGOING DIALYSIS, IS LIKELY TO INFLUENCE ADOPTED THERAPEUTIC STRATEGIES AND PROMOTE A MORE PERSONALIZED THERAPEUTIC APPROACH. BETTER CARE AND PREVENTION THROUGH MONITORING OF THESE HIGH-RISK PATIENTS WILL REDUCE MORTALITY RATES AND THEIR HIGH PER CAPITA COST, WHICH IS FIVE TIMES HIGHER THAN THE AVERAGE HEALTHCARE SPENDING. BIOTRICITY IS DEVELOPING BIOFLUX-AI, AN INNOVATIVE SYSTEM FOR REAL-TIME MONITORING AND PREDICTION OF STROKE EPISODES IN CKD PATIENTS. BIOFLUX-AI COMBINES AN FDA-APPROVED, HIGH-PRECISION, SMALL MOBILE CARDIAC TELEMETRY (MCT) DEVICE WITH AI-DRIVEN ALGORITHMS SPECIFICALLY TRAINED FOR THE PREDICTION OF STROKE IN STAGE 4 AND 5 CKD PATIENTS. BIOTRICITY HAS PREVIOUSLY GENERATED AND VALIDATED ALGORITHMS FOR THE AUTOMATED DETECTION OF ECG ABNORMALITIES, INCLUDING ATRIAL FIBRILLATION (AF). GIVEN THE STRONG ASSOCIATION OF AF WITH INCREASED RISK OF BLOOD CLOT FORMATION AND HENCE, ISCHEMIC STROKE IN CKD PATIENTS, BIOTRICITY PROPOSES TO COMBINE THE DETECTION OF THIS ARRHYTHMIA WITH OTHER STROKE RISK FACTORS OF CKD PATIENTS (AGE, WEIGHT, HEIGHT, BMI, CKD STATUS, DIABETES, HEART DISEASE) AND ECG PARAMETERS TO PREDICT STROKE RISK IN REAL-TIME. SINCE SPECIES DIFFERENCES IN THE SUBSTRATE AND INHIBITOR SELECTIVITY OF TRANSPORTERS ARE LIKELY TO OCCUR, THE LACK OF CELL LINES EXPRESSING SPECIES ORTHOLOGS OF TRANSPORTERS REPRESENTS AN ENORMOUS GAP FOR VETERINARY DRUG DEVELOPMENT. THE GOALS OF THIS PHASE I SBIR RESEARCH ARE TO CREATE AND CHARACTERIZE CELL LINES AND YEAST STRAINS STABLY EXPRESSING VETERINARY ANIMAL BCRP FROM DOG, CAT, SHEEP AND PIG. THE CELL LINES AND YEAST STRAINS WILL SERVE AS RESOURCES FOR DRUG DEVELOPERS, AND WILL REPRESENT INNOVATIVE “ALTERNATIVE METHODS, IN SUPPORT OF REPLACEMENT/REDUCTION/REFINEMENT FOR ACTIVITIES INVOLVING ANIMAL RESEARCH.” IN STUDIES UNDER AIM 1, WE WILL CREATE STABLE CELL LINES AND YEAST STRAINS EXPRESSING THE SPECIES ORTHOLOGS OF BCRP. IN AIM 2, WE WILL CREATE ROBUST ASSAYS AND USE MODEL SUBSTRATES AND INHIBITORS OF BCRP TO CHARACTERIZE SPECIES DIFFERENCES IN THE SUBSTRATE AND INHIBITOR SPECIFICITY OF THE TRANSPORTER. METHODS USED IN THE PROPOSED STUDIES INCLUDE TECHNOLOGIES FOR CREATION OF CELL LINES STABLY EXPRESSING THE TRANSPORTER ORTHOLOGS, AND ISOTOPIC UPTAKE AND FLUX ASSAYS IN CELLS. YEAST TRANSFORMATION PROCEDURES AND CYTOTOXICITY ASSAYS WILL ALSO BE APPLIED. COLLECTIVELY THESE STUDIES WILL ENABLE VETERINARY DRUG DEVELOPMENT BY PROVIDING MUCH NEEDED CELL LINES FOR PREDICTING DRUG ABSORPTION. THE CELL LINES WILL REDUCE THE RELIANCE ON TRIAL-AND-ERROR EXPERIMENTAL APPROACHES IN ANIMALS.
