GRADUATE PSYCHOLOGY EDUCATION PROGRAMS - AUGSBURG UNIVERSITY, LOCATED IN MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA (MN), THE ONLY CLINICAL PSYD PROGRAM IN THE STATE AND A MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTION AS DEFINED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS $1,017,582 FUNDING FROM THE HEALTH RESOURCES AND SERVICES ADMINISTRATION (HRSA) GRADUATE PSYCHOLOGY EDUCATION (GPE) PROGRAM TO IMPLEMENT THE ENHANCING PATHWAYS FOR PSYCHOLOGISTS IN INTEGRATED CARE (EPPIC) FELLOWSHIP PROJECT. THE EPPIC FELLOWSHIP IS AUGSBURG’S INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO ADVANCE THE HRSA GPE’S PROGRAM GOAL OF INCREASING THE NUMBER OF WELL-TRAINED, CULTURALLY COMPETENT HEALTH SERVICE PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS, INTERNS, AND POST-DOCTORAL RESIDENTS, WHO ARE BOTH PREPARED TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITIES THEY SERVE AND COMMITTED TO WORKING IN HIGH NEED AND HIGH DEMAND AREAS AFTER GRADUATION. THROUGH THE EPPIC PROJECT, AUGSBURG WILL CENTER AN EQUITY APPROACH TO (1) RECRUIT, TRAIN, AND PREPARE 18 TRAINEES FOR THE COMMUNITY-BASED PRIMARY CARE SETTINGS THEY WILL SERVE IN AFTER GRADUATION; (2) PROVIDE TRAINEES WITH ENHANCED, LEARNER-CENTERED DIDACTIC AND EXPERIENTIAL TRAINING CURRICULA, INCLUDING TRAUMA-INFORMED CARE AND SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER (SUD)/OPIOID USE DISORDER (OUD) PREVENTION AND TREATMENT SERVICES, ALONG WITH HIGH-QUALITY INTERDISCIPLINARY TRAINING; (3) LEVERAGE STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH INTEGRATED CARE IN THE TWIN CITIES TO DEVELOP ACADEMIC AND CLINICAL PARTNERSHIPS; AND (4) PROVIDE ONGOING FACULTY DEVELOPMENT AND STAFF TRAINING TO PROMOTE TEACHING AND LEARNING AND TO ADDRESS BEHAVIORAL HEALTH NEEDS IN THE REGION. THIS PROJECT ADDRESSES SIGNIFICANT MENTAL HEALTHCARE SHORTAGES FACING MINNESOTA. THERE ARE CURRENTLY 140 MENTAL HEALTH HPSAS IN MINNESOTA’S FACILITIES (122), GEOGRAPHIC AREAS (8), AND IN POPULATION (10) GROUPS, WITH THE MORE RURAL PARTS OF THE STATE FACING A SEVERE SHORTAGE OF ALL PROVIDER TYPES, ESPECIALLY IN PRIMARY CARE AND MENTAL HEALTH. FURTHERMORE, THE MINNESOTA WORKFORCE DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THE POPULATION IT SERVES: MINNESOTA HAS SIGNIFICANT RACIAL DIVERSITY, WITH SOME OF THE LARGEST IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE COMMUNITIES IN THE NATION, YET 88% OF ITS MENTAL HEALTH WORKFORCE IS WHITE. THE PROJECT ALSO ADDRESSES GAPS IN SUD/OUD TREATMENT AND THE AVAILABILITY OF INTEGRATED CARE. RATES OF SUD/OUD ARE OF PRIME CONCERN IN MINNESOTAN COMMUNITIES AND HEALTH DISPARITIES EXIST BETWEEN RACIAL AND ETHNIC GROUPS. OPIOID-INVOLVED OVERDOSE DEATHS AMONG PEOPLE IN MINNESOTA INCREASED 43% FROM 2020 TO 2021, AND THE NUMBER OF DEATHS HAS MORE THAN DOUBLED SINCE 2019. TRAUMA AND SUDS ARE SOME OF THE MOST PROMINENT AND DISTRESSING PRESENTATIONS IN INTEGRATED PRIMARY CARE SETTINGS, AND EFFECTIVE TREATMENT NECESSITATES AN INTEGRATED APPROACH (BAGLEY, ET AL., 2021). HOWEVER, OF THOSE REFERRED OUT OF A PRIMARY CARE SETTING TO SPECIALIZED SERVICES THAT ARE NOT COLLOCATED, ONLY A SMALL NUMBER (10%) FOLLOW THROUGH. BY TRAINING HEALTH SERVICE PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS TO SERVE IN INTEGRATED CARE SETTINGS AND PROVIDE SUD/OUD TREATMENT IN CULTURALLY COMPETENT WAYS, THIS PROJECT WILL MAKE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE MENTAL HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE IN MINNESOTA. AUGSBURG IS APPLYING FOR FUNDING PRIORITY 1: PROGRAMS THAT HAVE DEMONSTRATED THE ABILITY TO TRAIN PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSIONALS TO WORK IN INTEGRATED CARE SETTINGS. WE ARE ALSO APPLYING FOR THE FUNDING PREFERENCE FOR PROGRAMS THAT PLACE PROGRAM GRADUATES IN MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES AND HAVE SUBMITTED DATA FOR QUALIFICATION 1: HIGH RATE.

ATMOSPHERIC PARTICLE FORMATION IN TWO SYSTEMS: SULFURIC ACID (H2SO4)/WATER (H2O) PLUS AMMONIA (NH3) AND/OR AMINES, AND OXIDATION PRODUCTS FROM ORGANIC COMPOUNDS -THIS PROJECT INVOLVES THE CONDUCT OF NEW LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS TO STUDY FUNDAMENTAL PROCESSES UNDERLYING NEW PARTICLE FORMATION IN THE ATMOSPHERE WITH A PARTICULAR FOCUS ON THE FORMATION AND GROWTH OF NANOPARTICLES. THERE STILL EXIST UNCERTAINTIES AND KNOWLEDGE GAPS RELATED TO NEW PARTICLE FORMATION, AND THIS WORK WILL PROVIDE INSIGHTS INTO NEW PARTICLE FORMATION AND ENHANCE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE FORMATION OF CLOUDS, AS WELL AS THE IMPACTS ON A CHANGING CLIMATE AND HUMAN HEALTH. THE EXPERIMENTS WILL BE PERFORMED IN TWO REACTORS DEVELOPED IN PREVIOUS NSF-FUNDED WORK. UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, INCLUDING THOSE FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS, WILL BE TRAINED AND TAUGHT LABORATORY TECHNIQUES OVER THE COURSE OF THIS PROJECT. TWO FLOW REACTORS, DEVELOPED IN PREVIOUS NSF-FUNDED WORK, WILL BE USED IN THIS PROJECT: A PHOTOLYTIC FLOW REACTOR (PHOFR) AND A GROWTH FLOW REACTOR (GROFR). THE EXPERIMENTS WILL PROVIDE FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE PERTAINING TO GIBBS ENERGY, VAN DER WAALS EFFECTS, AND THE IMPACT OF PARTICLE PHASE COMPOSITION OF A H2SO4/NH3 SYSTEM, AS WELL AS FOCUS ON ORGANIC PARTICLE FORMATION FROM BIOGENIC VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUND OXIDATION. THE EXPERIMENTS WITH THE PHOFR INCLUDE: (1) STUDY THE NUCLEATION RATES AND CLUSTER GIBBS ENERGIES IN H2SO4/H2O AND TERNARY (WITH NH3) SYSTEMS UNDER VARIOUS TEMPERATURES; AND (2) STUDY THE GROWTH OF SEED PARTICLES BY H2SO4 UPTAKE AS A FUNCTION OF SEED PARTICLE SIZE AND COMPOSITION, AS WELL AS DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF VAN DER WALLS FORCES AND THE HYGROSCOPICITY OF NANOPARTICLES. THE EXPERIMENTS WITH THE GROFR INCLUDE: (1) STUDY THE EFFECT OF SEED PARTICLE SIZE AND GROWTH DURING THE PHOTOOXIDATION OF MONOTERPENES; (2) STUDY THE SYNTHESIS OF FIRST-GENERATION OXIDATION PRODUCTS OF MONOTERPENES AND RELATED COMPOUNDS; AND (3) THE DEPLOYMENT OF A MASS SPECTROMETER. AUGGIE WELL-BEING - AUGSBURG UNIVERSITY, A MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTION IN URBAN MINNEAPOLIS, MN, PROPOSES THE AUGGIE WELL-BEING PROJECT TO ENHANCE OUTREACH, REDUCE STIGMA, AND IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE USE SERVICES FOR UNDERREPRESENTED AND UNDER-RESOURCED STUDENTS. CULTURALLY RELEVANT ACTIVITIES TO ENCOURAGE HELP-SEEKING, AND MANDATORY EVIDENCE-BASED TRAINING FOR CAMPUS LEADERS WILL MOVE AUGSBURG TOWARD BECOMING A TRAUMA-INFORMED CAMPUS. AUGSBURG STUDENTS ARE PRIMARILY FIRST-GENERATION, LOW-INCOME, AND/OR STUDENTS OF COLOR. MANY STUDENTS COME FROM IMMIGRANT/DIASPORIC BACKGROUNDS, MOST COMMONLY HMONG, SOMALI, AND LATINO POPULATIONS, WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED MULTIPLE FORMS OF OPPRESSION AND TRAUMA. ADDITIONALLY, AUGSBURG IS A FEW MILES FROM THE INTERSECTION WHERE GEORGE FLOYD WAS MURDERED IN 2020. THUS, OUR STUDENTS EXPERIENCE A COMPLEX COMBINATION OF MENTAL HEALTH AND BASIC LIVING NEEDS, COMPOUNDED BY INTERGENERATIONAL TRAUMA, ACUTE RACIAL VIOLENCE, AND SYSTEMIC OPPRESSION. THEY REPORT HIGH LIFETIME DIAGNOSES OF DEPRESSION, PTSD, SEXUAL ASSAULT, AND SUBSTANCE USE. DESPITE THIS GREAT NEED, ON-CAMPUS COUNSELING SERVICES ARE UNDERUTILIZED. THEREFORE, AUGGIE WELL-BEING WILL PRIORITIZE CULTURALLY RELEVANT STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ AWARENESS OF AND ACCESS TO SERVICES. WE ANTICIPATE THAT ALL FACULTY, STAFF, 3,152 AUGSBURG STUDENTS (CALLED AUGGIES), AND THEIR FAMILIES WILL BENEFIT FROM THE PROPOSED PROJECT. GOAL 1. WE WILL IMPROVE UNDERSERVED AND UNDER-RESOURCED STUDENTS’ AWARENESS OF MENTAL HEALTH CONCEPTS AND SERVICES BY OBJ 1.1) DEVELOPING, TRANSLATING, AND DISSEMINATING PROMOTIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS IN YEAR 1; OBJ 1.2) PROVIDING ANNUAL TOURS OF THE COUNSELING CENTER (CWC); OBJ 1.3) AND EXPANDING ACCESS TO VOLUNTARY SCREENINGS. GOAL 2. HNDS-R: ADVANCING MOTIVATIONAL SCIENCE THROUGH UNDERGRADUATE LABOR FORCE CAPACITY BUILDING AND COMMUNITY DATA SCIENCE INFRASTRUCTURE -INSIGHTS FROM MOTIVATION SCIENCE SHOW THAT UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS WHO ATTEND UNIVERSITY PROXIMATE TO FAMILY AND OTHER SUPPORT STRUCTURES ARE MORE LIKELY TO REMAIN IN THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITIES POST-GRADUATION. THIS PROJECT STRENGTHENS COMPETITIVENESS FOR FUTURE EMPLOYMENT WITHIN THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES THROUGH ANALYSES OF MOTIVATIONAL PLACE-BASED DATASETS, HUMAN-CENTERED CASE STUDIES, AND DIRECT NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES WITH LOCAL DATA SCIENCE PROFESSIONALS. THIS PROJECT IMPROVES UNDERGRADUATE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES WITH DATASETS SUITABLE FOR ANALYSES USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND MACHINE LEARNING ALGORITHMS. USING A COHORT-BASED APPROACH, 120 STUDENTS (60 DATA SCIENCE STUDENTS AND 60 SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS) WILL PARTICIPATE IN DATA SCIENCE PROJECTS DEVELOPED WITH A COMMUNITY PARTNER. IN ADDITION, THE PROJECT DEVELOPS TRANSLATIONAL MODELS FOR CURRICULA AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT THAT ARE TRANSFERABLE TO OTHER LOCAL CONTEXTS. THIS PROJECT TESTS THE NOVEL HYPOTHESIS THAT ENGAGEMENT WITH COMMUNITY-BASED DATASETS AND CROSS-DISCIPLINARY METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES SIMULTANEOUSLY IMPROVE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES, PERSISTENCE TO DEGREE COMPLETION, AND INITIAL CAREER TRAJECTORY. THE PROJECT ADVANCES KNOWLEDGE TO INVESTIGATE SPECIFIC EXPERIENCES OF PERSONAL AND COMMUNAL UTILITY AND THE ASSOCIATION WITH STUDENT MOTIVATION. MCA PILOT PUI: DATA INTENSIVE RESEARCH TRAINING (DIRT) IN FORECASTING SOIL RESPIRATION AT CORE TERRESTRIAL NEON SITES -IN THIS NSF MID-CAREER ADVANCEMENT (MCA) AWARD, THE PI WILL EXPAND HIS KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS IN ADVANCED ECOSYSTEM INFORMATICS TO A ?BIG DATA? ENVIRONMENTAL DATA SCIENCE PROBLEM. THE SCIENCE OF ECOLOGICAL FORECASTING MAKES PREDICTIONS ABOUT ECOSYSTEMS IN RESPONSE TO ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE. ECOLOGICAL FORECASTS IN TURN, AID IN DEVELOPMENT OF NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS FOR EARTH'S CHANGING CLIMATE. SOME FORECASTS HAVE A LARGE DEGREE OF UNCERTAINTY, SUCH AS THOSE FOR TERRESTRIAL CARBON CYCLING. GAINS AND LOSSES OF CO2 FROM THE SOIL, KNOWN AS SOIL EFFLUX, ARE AN IMPORTANT SOURCE OF THIS UNCERTAINTY BECAUSE THEY DEPEND ON CLIMATE INPUTS WITH A HIGH DEGREE OF VARIABILITY, SUCH AS TEMPERATURE AND PRECIPITATION. THIS RESEARCH WILL DEVELOP OPEN-ACCESS REAL-TIME FORECASTS OF SOIL CO2 EFFLUXES USING MATHEMATICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL APPROACHES. FORECASTS WILL BE DEVELOPED ACROSS 47 LONG-TERM RESEARCH SITES IN THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES THAT ARE PART OF THE NSF-SUPPORTED NATIONAL ECOLOGICAL OBSERVATORY NETWORK (NEON). THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR (PI), IN PARTNERSHIP WITH A MENTOR FROM THE NSF-SUPPORTED ECOLOGICAL FORECASTING INITIATIVE, WILL FURTHER DEVELOP A TOOL TO ADDRESS A COMMUNITY FORECASTING CHALLENGE FOR SOIL EFFLUXES, LEADING TO ITS BROADER ADOPTION IN THE ECOLOGICAL COMMUNITY. THE SKILLS GAINED THROUGH THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE A LONG-TERM AND SUSTAINABLE RESEARCH TRAJECTORY FOR THE PI, AND WILL HELP HIM DEVELOP NEW UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AND TRAINING EXPERIENCES. REAL-TIME FORECASTS OF COMPONENTS OF THE TERRESTRIAL CARBON CYCLE (I.E. GROSS PRIMARY PRODUCTIVITY AND NET ECOSYSTEM CARBON EXCHANGE) ARE IMPORTANT FOR UNDERSTANDING AND DEVELOPING NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS IN A CHANGING CLIMATE. DESPITE THE IMPORTANCE OF SOIL CARBON STORAGE TO CLIMATE MITIGATION, STANDARDIZED PREDICTION OF TERRESTRIAL SOIL CARBON EFFLUX ACROSS SEASONAL AND INTERANNUAL TIMESCALES LAGS BEHIND OTHER TERRESTRIAL CARBON FORECASTS WITH INCREASED MODEL FORECAST UNCERTAINTY FROM A (CURRENT) LACK OF STRUCTURAL REPRESENTATION OF SOIL PROCESSES. THIS PROJECT WILL DEVELOP FORECASTS FOR SOIL CARBON EFFLUX ACROSS SEASONAL AND INTERANNUAL TIMESCALES AT ALL NEON TERRESTRIAL SITES. PROJECT DELIVERABLES INCLUDE INCORPORATION OF A SUITE OF SOIL CARBON MODELS (SPANNING A RANGE OF MODEL COMPLEXITY) INTO AN INTEGRATED INFORMATICS TOOLBOX FOR ECOSYSTEM MODELING (THE PREDICTIVE ECOSYSTEM ANALYZER OR PECAN) TO GENERATE SOIL EFFLUX FORECASTS. MODELED EFFLUXES WILL BE VALIDATED AGAINST EXISTING MEASUREMENTS OR DATABASES (E.G. SOIL RESPIRATION DATABASE OR THE CONTINUOUS SOIL RESPIRATION DATABASE) WHERE APPROPRIATE. THIS PROJECT WILL DIRECTLY CONNECT NEON DATA AND ECOLOGICAL FORECASTING TECHNIQUES WITH THE BROADER ECOLOGICAL COMMUNITY. DEVELOPED METHODS AND TOOLS WILL BE OPEN-ACCESS FOR THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY, NOTABLY THROUGH AN OPEN-SOURCE R PACKAGE AND BY INCORPORATION OF MODELS INTO THE PECAN ECOLOGICAL INFORMATICS WORKFLOW. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: GEM: PROPAGATION AND DISSIPATION OF ELECTROMAGNETIC ION CYCLOTRON WAVES IN THE MAGNETOSPHERE AND IONOSPHERE -THERE ARE MANY TYPES OF PLASMA WAVES IN THE EARTH'S MAGNETOSPHERE. FOR DECADES IT HAS BEEN OBSERVED THAT ULTRA-LOW FREQUENCY ELECTROMAGNETIC ION CYCLOTRON (EMIC) WAVES IN THE PC 1-2 FREQUENCY RANGE (0.1-5 HZ) NEAR THE ION CYCLOTRON FREQUENCY ARE A PROMINENT FEATURE OF THE MAGNETOSPHERE-IONOSPHERE SYSTEM. THESE WAVES PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN HEATING IONOSPHERIC IONS TO MAGNETOSPHERIC ENERGIES, REGULATING PRESSURE ANISOTROPY IN THE MAGNETOSPHERE, POPULATING THE MAGNETOSPHERE WITH ENERGETIC HEAVY IONS DURING SUBSTORMS, AND INDUCING ENHANCED PROTONS. EMIC WAVES ARE KNOWN TO BE EXCITED AS LEFT-HAND POLARIZED WAVES NEAR THE MAGNETIC EQUATOR IN THE INNER MAGNETOSPHERE AND REACH THE GROUND PROPAGATING ALONG THE MAGNETIC FIELD LINE. HIGHER-FREQUENCY EMIC WAVES ARE OFTEN FILTERED DURING WAVE PROPAGATION TO THE GROUND, WHILE LOWER-FREQUENCY EMIC WAVES CAN EFFECTIVELY REACH THE GROUND. UNDERSTANDING THIS PHENOMENON IS COMPLICATED BECAUSE EMIC WAVES CAN BE AFFECTED BY VARIOUS PHYSICAL PROCESSES, THE PLASMA ENVIRONMENT ALONG THE PROPAGATION PATH IN THE MAGNETOSPHERE/IONOSPHERE, AND WAVE PROPERTIES. THE TEAM PROPOSED TO UNDERSTAND BETTER THE PROPAGATION AND DISSIPATION OF EMIC WAVES USING MODELS AND BOTH SPACE AND GROUND-BASED OBSERVATIONS. THIS COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH PROJECT CONSISTS OF SCIENTISTS FROM FOUR INSTITUTES, INCLUDING TWO NON-R1 COLLEGES. THIS PROJECT AIMS TO INVESTIGATE THE PROPAGATION AND DISSIPATION OF EMIC WAVES IN THE MAGNETOSPHERE AND IONOSPHERE BY ANSWERING THESE FOUR SCIENTIFIC QUESTIONS: 1. HOW DO EMIC WAVES REACH THE GROUND? 2. HOW IS EMIC WAVE PROPAGATION AFFECTED BY GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY? 3. HOW DOES GEOMAGNETIC FIELD TOPOLOGY, SUCH AS COMPRESSED AND STRETCHED MAGNETIC FIELD, AFFECT WAVE PROPAGATION? 4. WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF EMIC WAVE POLARIZATION IN THE CONTEXT OF THE ABOVE PARAMETERS AND HOW ARE WAVE POLARIZATIONS RELATED WITH PROPAGATION? THE TEAM WILL EMPLOY A STATE-OF-ART FULL-WAVE SIMULATION CODE, PETRA-M, WHICH USES THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD (FEM). ONE ADVANTAGE OF USING THE FEM IS THAT VARIOUS MAGNETIC FIELD TOPOLOGIES AND BACKGROUND PLASMA PARAMETERS ARE EASILY ADOPTED IN THE SIMULATION CODE. THE PETRA-M CODE WILL UTILIZE REALISTIC TERRESTRIAL MAGNETIC FIELD TOPOLOGIES (DIPOLE AND COMPRESSED MAGNETIC FIELD) AND DENSITY CONFIGURATIONS FROM EMPIRICAL DENSITY MODELS. WAVE SIMULATIONS WILL BE PERFORMED TO EXAMINE WAVE GENERATION AND PROPAGATION. THE TEAM WILL ALSO ANALYZE RECENT OBSERVATIONS OF THESE WAVES BY MULTIPLE SATELLITES AND COMPARE THEM WITH THE GROUND MAGNETOMETER NETWORK OBSERVATIONS. TO CONSIDER THE EMIC WAVE PROPAGATION IN THE INNER MAGNETOSPHERE, THE PROPOSERS WILL INVESTIGATE THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EMIC WAVE EVENTS BETWEEN SPACE (GOES SATELLITE) AND GROUND, SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION (L AND MLT), RELATIONSHIP WITH SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY, THE DISTANCE BETWEEN GOES SATELLITES AND PLASMAPAUSE LOCATIONS, AND WAVE PROPERTIES SUCH AS POLARIZATION, FREQUENCY, AND NORMAL ANGLE. FOR THE EMIC WAVES IN THE OUTER MAGNETOSPHERE, THE TEAM WILL ALSO INVESTIGATE SPACE (MMS, THEMIS, AND CLUSTER)-GROUND CONJUGATE OBSERVATIONS USING HIGH-LATITUDE GROUND STATIONS. THIS PROJECT AT AUGSBURG UNIVERSITY INCLUDES PARTNERSHIPS WITH MINNEAPOLIS COMMUNITY AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE, NORMANDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND HENRY, WASHBURN, AND SOUTH HIGH SCHOOLS IN MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA. THE LONG-TERM PROJECT GOALS ARE TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF STEM MAJORS (BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, MATHEMATICS, STATISTICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE, AND PHYSICS) AT AUGSBURG WHO SEEK GRADES 5-12 STEM TEACHING LICENSURE, TO OFFER CLINICAL TEACHING EXPERIENCES THAT PREPARE STUDENTS TO TEACH AT HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS, AND TO MAINTAIN A VIABLE, SUSTAINABLE PROGRAM IN SECONDARY EDUCATION FOR STEM MAJORS. EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES SHOW THAT A COMMITMENT TO CULTURALLY RELEVANT AND RESPONSIVE CURRICULUM AND PEDAGOGY DESIGNED FOR THE DIVERSITY OF TODAY?S LEARNERS IS ONE WAY TO ADVANCE SUCH EQUITY. THROUGH THIS PROJECT POST-SECONDARY MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS FACULTY WILL CONVENE FOR AN INTENSIVE THREE-DAY SEMINAR THAT WILL EQUIP PARTICIPANTS WITH SKILLS AND EXPERTISE TO MEANINGFULLY INCORPORATE SOCIAL JUSTICE THEMES SUCH AS ELECTORAL ISSUES AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE, INTO THEIR CURRICULA AND TEACHING PRACTICES. POST-SEMINAR ACTIVITIES INCLUDE SESSIONS OR WORKSHOPS AT TWO REGIONAL CONFERENCES HOSTED BY THE NORTH CENTRAL SECTION OF THE MATHEMATICAL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA (MAA-NCS), AND VIRTUAL ENGAGEMENT OF FACULTY FROM THE SECTION TO PROVIDE ONGOING COLLABORATION AND PEER-TO-PEER SUPPORT AS FACULTY MAKE CHANGES TO THEIR TEACHING. BY ENGAGING FACULTY ACROSS DIVERSE INSTITUTIONS, THIS SEMINAR WILL SERVE AS A REGIONAL MODEL FOR SUSTAINED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AIMED AT ADVANCING EQUITY IN STEM FIELDS.
