RISE: RESEARCH ECOSYSTEM INTEGRATION AND SIOUXLAND PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM--A PLAN FOR GROWING RESEARCH CAPACITY AT MORNINGSIDE UNIVERSITY AND BEYOND -MORNINGSIDE UNIVERSITY?S RISE PROGRAM (RESEARCH ECOSYSTEM INTEGRATION AND SIOUXLAND PARTNERSHIP EXPANSION) WILL ESTABLISH AN OFFICE OF SPONSORED PROGRAMS (OSP) AT MORNINGSIDE THAT WILL SERVE TO INCREASE THE RESEARCH CAPACITY OF NOT ONLY MORNINGSIDE, BUT ALSO INCREASE THE RESEARCH CAPACITIES OF OTHER REGIONAL INSTITUTIONS THROUGH THE ESTABLISHMENT OF TARGETED RESEARCH PARTNERSHIPS. THE OSP WILL UTILIZE THEIR EXPERTISE IN RESEARCH ADMINISTRATION TO CREATE PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN MORNINGSIDE FACULTY MEMBERS AND POTENTIAL RESEARCH PARTNERS AT OTHER INSTITUTIONS WITH SIMILAR INTERESTS THAT DO NOT HAVE THE RESOURCES TO PURSUE RESEARCH INDIVIDUALLY. ADDITIONALLY, THE OSP WILL PROVIDE TRAINING FOR ALL MORNINGSIDE RESEARCHERS AND PARTNERS IN GRANT-SEEKING AND AWARD MANAGEMENT. THERE WILL BE A PARTICULAR FOCUS ON CREATING PARTNERSHIPS OTHER EMERGING RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS (ERI) SUCH AS SMALL 4-YEARS INSTITUTIONS AND COMMUNITY COLLEGES, AS WELL AS K-12 SCHOOLS. THERE WILL BE A PARTICULAR FOCUS IN INCREASING THE RESEARCH CAPACITY OF THOSE INSTITUTIONS LOCATED IN RURAL AREAS. RISE WILL SERVE TO TRANSFORM THE RESEARCH ENTERPRISE IN THE SIOUXLAND REGION BY INCREASING RESEARCH CAPACITY AT MORNINGSIDE AND ITS PARTNER INSTITUTIONS, AND WILL ALSO SERVE AS A MODEL FOR HOW SIMILAR ERIS NATIONWIDE MAY INCREASE THEIR RESEARCH CAPACITIES. THE OSP CREATED THROUGH THE RISE PROGRAM WILL PROVIDE THE GUIDANCE, EXPERTISE, AND TRAINING NECESSARY TO SUPPORT FACULTY ACROSS ALL DISCIPLINES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF RESEARCH IDEAS, IDENTIFICATION OF OPPORTUNITIES, CREATION OF PROPOSALS, AND MANAGEMENT OF AWARDS. TRAINING OF MORNINGSIDE FACULTY AND PROSPECTIVE PARTNERS WILL FOCUS ON KEY AREAS SUCH AS (1) IDEA DEVELOPMENT; (2) GOAL SETTING AND PROGRAM DESIGN; (3) FINDING SUITABLE FUNDING SOURCES; (4) HOW TO BUILD A SUCCESSFUL GRANT APPLICATION; AND (5) HOW TO MANAGE GRANT AWARDS FROM THE INVESTIGATOR?S PERSPECTIVE. WE BELIEVE THAT THESE ACTIVITIES, CONDUCTED BY THE OSP, WILL INCREASE THE RESEARCH CAPACITY AT MORNINGSIDE AND IN THE REGION, AND WE WILL EVALUATE THIS MODEL THROUGH A MIXED METHODS APPROACH INTEGRATING QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE DATA FROM EXTANT DATA ANALYSIS OF GRANT SUBMISSION/AWARD DATA, FACULTY/STAFF INTERVIEWS, AND DOCUMENT REVIEW. IF SUCCESSFUL, RISE CREATES A MODEL THAT WILL BE APPLICABLE TO MULTIPLE INSTITUTIONAL CONTEXTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY SUCH AS: (A) TEACHING-FOCUSED INSTITUTIONS THAT DESIRE TO USE RESEARCH TO BEST ENHANCE THE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT EXPERIENCE, (B) INSTITUTIONS THAT WISH TO INCREASE THEIR OWN RESEARCH CAPACITY AND THAT OF THE REGION AROUND THEM, (C) INSTITUTIONS THAT DESIRE TO INCREASE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES AND TRAINING FOR RURAL FACULTY AND STUDENTS, OR (D) SOME COMBINATION OF THE ABOVE. AID DCL: INTEGRATING PROJECT-AND-PLACE-BASED RESEARCH EXPERIENCES TO INCREASE PERSISTENCE IN STEM UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS -THIS LEVEL 2 ENGAGED STUDENT LEARNING PROJECT, INTEGRATING PROJECT-AND-PLACE BASED RESEARCH EXPERIENCES INTO GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES TO INCREASE PERSISTENCE (PERSIST) 2, AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY IMPROVING THE DEVELOPMENT OF RESEARCH SKILLS AND POSITIVE ATTITUDES TOWARD SCIENCE IN UNDERGRADUATE BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY MAJORS THROUGH ACTIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCES. THROUGH PRIOR RESEARCH CONDUCTED AT MORNINGSIDE UNIVERSITY AS PART OF THE PERSIST PROGRAM, INVESTIGATORS DEMONSTRATED THAT PROJECT-BASED LEARNING (PBL) POSITIVELY IMPACTED THE DEVELOPMENT OF INCOMING BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY MAJORS. IN PARTICULAR, THESE STUDENTS DEMONSTRATED MORE POSITIVE ATTITUDES TOWARD SCIENCE, BETTER RESEARCH SKILLS, AND A HIGHER LEVEL OF RETENTION WHEN COMPARED TO A CONTROL GROUP. AS A RESULT, MORNINGSIDE PLANS TO OFFER ANOTHER ITERATION OF THIS PROJECT--PERSIST 2--TO AN EXPANDED PARTICIPANT POOL, MAKING IT AVAILABLE TO ALL INCOMING BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY MAJORS. THE INVESTIGATORS HYPOTHESIZE THAT THE ?LEARNING BY DOING? CORE OF PERSIST 2 MAY BENEFIT ALL STUDENTS AT THIS EARLY STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT. PERSIST 2 WILL BE A MODIFIED, ENHANCED VERSION OF THE ORIGINAL PERSIST PROGRAM, BASED ON LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE FIRST ITERATION. SPECIFICALLY, A MORE COMPACT PBL-INTENSIVE COURSE SEQUENCE WILL BE IMPLEMENTED (TWO SEMESTERS INSTEAD OF THREE), ALLOWING FOR MULTIPLE STUDENT COHORTS, AND WE WILL OFFER AN ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE COMBINING PBL WITH SERVICE AND PLACE-BASED LEARNING. BUILDING ON THE SUCCESS OF THE NSF-FUNDED PERSIST PROJECT (2021?2023), WHICH IMPROVED STEM PERSISTENCE AND STUDENT DEVELOPMENT AMONG BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY MAJORS, MORNINGSIDE UNIVERSITY PROPOSES A REVISED VERSION, PERSIST 2. THIS NEW PROJECT WILL: (1) EXPAND PARTICIPATION TO ALL UNDERGRADUATE BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY MAJORS, INCREASING STUDENT IMPACT AND ENABLING MORE ROBUST EVALUATION OF PEDAGOGICAL INTERVENTIONS; (2) INTRODUCE A NEW SERVICE-LEARNING SHORT COURSE; (3) ENGAGE A BROADER GROUP OF STEM FACULTY; (4) TRAIN AND MENTOR A POSTDOCTORAL TEACHING FELLOW; AND (5) DISSEMINATE PROJECT INNOVATIONS THROUGH PUBLICATIONS, PRESENTATIONS, AND WORKSHOPS. THESE EXPANSIONS BUILD A MORE WIDELY APPLICABLE MODEL OF STEM UNDERGRADUATE ENGAGEMENT IN PROJECT-BASED AND SERVICE LEARNING TO IMPROVE SUCCESS FOR ALL STUDENTS. RESEARCHERS PLAN TO USE MIXED METHODOLOGY TO ASSESS THE OVERALL EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PERSIST 2 MODEL AND ADVANCE THE OVERALL UNDERSTANDING OF THE EFFECTS OF DEDICATED ACTIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF STEM COLLEGE STUDENTS. THE NSF IUSE:EDU PROGRAM SUPPORTS RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS TO IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STEM EDUCATION FOR ALL STUDENTS. THROUGH THE ENGAGED STUDENT LEARNING TRACK, THE PROGRAM SUPPORTS THE CREATION, EXPLORATION, AND IMPLEMENTATION OF PROMISING PRACTICES AND TOOLS. NEW INFORMATION AND DATA CAN CHANGE THEORIES, PREDICTIONS OFTEN COME UP SHORT, AND MEASUREMENTS CAN BE IMPRECISE. INTRODUCING STUDENTS TO SCIENTIFIC UNCERTAINTY IN SCIENCE CLASSES IS EXPECTED TO ENHANCE STUDENTS? SCIENTIFIC LITERACY AND ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE UNCERTAINTIES ASSOCIATED WITH SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE. THE PROJECT WILL BE AN IMPORTANT OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP INSIGHTS ABOUT HOW TO TEACH SCIENTIFIC UNCERTAINTY AT THE UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL?FOR WHICH THERE IS NOT YET ANY ESTABLISHED RESEARCH. THE PROJECT WILL CULMINATE IN A GUIDE DESIGNED TO HELP FACULTY MEMBERS AT INSTITUTIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY IMPLEMENT SIMILAR CONCEPTS IN THEIR OWN COURSES. THERE ARE TWO RESEARCH GOALS OF THE PROJECT: EXPLORING HOW THE INTEGRATION OF SCIENTIFIC UNCERTAINTY WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF EXISTING STEM COURSES IMPACTS (1) UNDERSTANDING OF SCIENTIFIC UNCERTAINTY AND (2) STUDENTS? ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE ABOUT SCIENTIFIC UNCERTAINTY. IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE INTEGRATION OF SCIENTIFIC UNCERTAINTY IN STEM COURSES WILL POSITIVELY IMPACT BOTH MEASURES. THE PROJECT WILL BEGIN WITH A WORKSHOP OFFERED TO CURRENT FACULTY MEMBERS AT MORNINGSIDE UNIVERSITY WHICH TRAINS THEM IN METHODS IN TEACHING SCIENTIFIC UNCERTAINTY. PARTICIPATING FACULTY MEMBERS WILL DESIGN AN UNCERTAINTY MODULE TO INTEGRATE INTO THEIR COURSES WHICH HIGHLIGHTS SCIENTIFIC UNCERTAINTY IN THE CONTEXT OF THE COURSE MATERIAL. THE PROJECT TEAM WILL CONDUCT PRE- AND POST-MODULE IMPLEMENTATION SURVEYS AND INTERVIEWS (BASED ON ESTABLISHED MEASURES OF SCIENTIFIC LITERACY AND UNCERTAINTY) TO ASSESS THE CHANGES IN STUDENT PERCEPTION AND UNDERSTANDING OF UNCERTAINTY AS WELL AS THEIR ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE WHAT THEY HAVE LEARNED. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE MODULES WILL BE EVALUATED BY COMPARING THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP TO CONTROL CLASSES, WHERE THERE IS NO ADDED MODULE ABOUT SCIENTIFIC UNCERTAINTY. BOTH WITHIN-GROUP AND BETWEEN-GROUP EFFECTS WILL BE CONSIDERED WHILE CONTROLLING FOR OUTSIDE FACTORS, INCLUDING INSTRUCTOR, MAJOR, RURALITY, AND STUDENT GENDER. THE NSF IUSE:EDU PROGRAM SUPPORTS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS TO IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STEM EDUCATION FOR ALL STUDENTS.
