LOUIS, MISSOURI AREA. WE WILL FOCUS ON APPROACHES AND PROVIDERS WHO WORK WITH CHILDREN, ADOLESCENTS, AND YOUTH (CAY) WHO ARE CURRENTLY UNDERSERVED BY OUR SYSTEM, INCLUDING THOSE WHO ARE MARGINALIZED DUE TO RACE AND/OR ETHNICITY, INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED HIGH LEVELS OF INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIAL TRAUMAS, AND THOSE WITH HIGHER RISK OF DEVELOPING SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS. WEBSTER WILL BUILD ON EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE TO FURTHER ADDRESS THE ONGOING GAPS FOR CAY IN MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES AND POPULATIONS OF ST. LOUIS. WICS WILL PROMOTE INCREASED REPRESENTATION FROM HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED POPULATIONS BY SUPPORTING THESE STUDENTS IN ACCESSING LEARNING, WHILE ALSO CREATING A PROGRAM AND SYSTEM THAT IS SUPPORTIVE OF THE NEEDS OF UNDERSERVED CAY. KEY ELEMENTS OF THIS FRAMEWORK INCLUDE (1) INCREASED STIPENDS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS FROM DISADVANTAGED AND MARGINALIZED BACKGROUNDS AND THOSE WITH EXPRESSED INTENT TO WORK IN COMMUNITIES SERVING THIS POPULATION; (2) ENHANCED CURRICULUM FOCUSED ON ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES (ACES) AND ECOLOGICAL COUNSELING; (3) ADDITIONAL INTERPROFESSIONAL LEARNING BETWEEN CLINICAL MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING (CMHC) AND STUDENTS FROM OTHER HELPING PROFESSIONS; (4) INCREASED INVESTMENTS IN TRAINING CLINICAL SUPERVISORS; AND (5) AN EXPANDED REACH THROUGH ADDITIONAL EXPERIENTIAL SITES SERVING THE TARGETED YOUTH POPULATIONS. WEBSTER WILL ESTABLISH A CLINICAL SUPERVISION ACADEMY (CSA) TO ADVANCE CULTURALLY COMPETENT AND TRAUMA-INFORMED CLINICAL SUPERVISOR TRAINING. WE WILL DEVELOP A COMPREHENSIVE CURRICULUM THAT WILL INCLUDE CULTURAL COMPETENCY, ECOLOGICAL COUNSELING, AND ACES-INFORMED COUNSELING TO BETTER EQUIP CLINICAL SUPERVISORS IN SUPPORTING DIVERSE TRAINEES AND CLIENTS. THE CSA WILL ALSO INCLUDE TRAININGS ON RESILIENCY, MINDFULNESS, AND OTHER SELF-CARE TOPICS TO PROMOTE RETENTION, DECREASE BURNOUT, AND HELP THE CLINICAL SUPERVISOR FELLOWS ADDRESS EMOTIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL STRAIN. THE WICS TEAM WILL ALSO WORK WITH LICENSING AGENCIES TO INCORPORATE CULTURAL COMPETENCY INTO CLINICAL SUPERVISION TRAINING, CERTIFICATION, AND RENEWAL. THE CSA WILL CREATE A PIPELINE OF CULTURALLY COMPETENT CLINICAL SUPERVISORS AND MENTORS FOR NEWLY GRADUATED CMHCS AND BUILD CAPACITY OF OUR INTERNSHIP SITE WORKFORCE. WEBSTER WILL TRAIN STUDENTS IN THE CMHC PROGRAM TO ADDRESS CRITICAL UNMET MENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH NEEDS IN ST. LOUIS. WE WILL PROVIDE DIDACTIC TRAINING IN COUNSELING AND TRAUMA AND CULTURALLY INFORMED CARE. WICS SCHOLARS WILL BE CMHC STUDENTS ENTERING THEIR FINAL TWO-SEMESTER INTERNSHIP WHO HAVE AN INTEREST IN PURSUING A COUNSELING CAREER SERVING HIGH-NEEDS CAY POPULATIONS IN HIGH-DEMAND AREAS. BEGINNINGS: BIOTECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY OPPORTUNITIES, PROFESSIONAL READINESS, AND EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM -THE BIOTECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY OPPORTUNITIES, PROFESSIONAL READINESS, AND EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM (BIO-PREP) WILL SERVE UNDERGRADUATE BIOLOGY, BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES, AND CHEMISTRY MAJORS BY INCREASING THEIR AWARENESS OF AND PREPAREDNESS FOR CAREERS IN BIOTECHNOLOGY. STUDENTS IN THESE MAJORS OFTEN ENTER UNIVERSITY WITH THE INTENTION OF ENTERING HEALTHCARE FIELDS DUE TO FAMILIARITY WITH THOSE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES. THIS LACK OF AWARENESS OF THE BREADTH OF POSSIBLE CAREERS LEADS TO A SHORTAGE OF SCIENTIFIC WORKERS IN BIOSCIENCE FIELDS. EVEN WHEN STUDENTS DO KNOW OF BIOTECHNOLOGY, MANY ARE UNABLE TO LEAVE PAID JOBS FOR UNPAID SUMMER INTERNSHIPS. BIO-PREP WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND THEIR POSTGRADUATE CAREER OPTIONS AND BUILD THE SKILLS AND CONFIDENCE NECESSARY FOR SUCCESS; A BENEFIT BOTH TO STUDENTS AND TO THE BIOTECHNOLOGY SECTOR SEEKING TO HIRE QUALIFIED SCIENTIFIC WORKERS. BIO-PREP WILL IMPLEMENT A BIOTECHNOLOGY CAREER EXPLORATIONS COURSE PAIRED WITH LABORATORY SKILLS TRAINING AND MICRO-CREDENTIALING. THESE ACTIVITIES WILL ENABLE PARTICIPANTS TO BUILD TECHNICAL SKILLSETS, TO BUILD CONFIDENCE AROUND BEING PREPARED TO WORK IN INDUSTRY AND WILL INCREASE CONNECTIONS WITH EMPLOYERS. PREPARING SUCCESSFUL STEM TEACHERS TO SERVE STUDENTS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS THROUGH PATHWAYS, PIPELINES, AND PARTNERSHIPS -THIS PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL NEED FOR HIGH-QUALITY STEM TEACHERS PREPARED TO EQUIP MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO BE THE NEXT GENERATION OF STEM PROFESSIONALS. OVER ITS FIVE-YEAR DURATION, THE PROJECT WILL PROVIDE SCHOLARSHIPS TO TWENTY-TWO (22) ASPIRING STEM TEACHERS MAJORING IN BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, COMPUTER SCIENCE, OR MATHEMATICS WITH A DOUBLE MAJOR IN EDUCATION. THIS PROJECT AT WEBSTER UNIVERSITY (WU) INCLUDES PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE RITENOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, RITENOUR HIGH SCHOOL, AND ST. LOUIS COMMUNITY COLLEGE (STLCC). TO SUPPORT STUDENT PROFESSIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES TO LEAD TO WELL-PREPARED STEM EDUCATORS, THE PROJECT ALSO INCLUDES COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE ACADEMY OF SCIENCE ST. LOUIS, THE URBAN LEAGUE OF ST. LOUIS, AND THE DONALD DANFORTH PLANT SCIENCE CENTER. A FUNDAMENTAL IMPETUS OF THE PROJECT IS TO STRENGTHEN THE PATHWAYS AND PIPELINES FOR THE COMBINATION OF STEM AND STEM TEACHER PREPARATION PROGRAMS THROUGH SPECIALIZED CURRICULA AND SPECIALLY DESIGNED PROJECT ACTIVITIES. THIS WILL ENABLE HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS IN THE ST. LOUIS AREA AND BEYOND TO PROVIDE THEIR STUDENTS A STRONG AND INCLUSIVE STEM EDUCATION, WHICH, IN TURN, WILL HELP PREPARE MANY OF THESE STUDENTS FOR SUCCESS IN A FUTURE STEM EDUCATION AND THE STEM WORKFORCE. THIS PROJECT AT WEBSTER UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS WILL BE GUIDED BY FOUR MAIN GOALS. FIRST IS TO RECRUIT MORE STUDENTS BEYOND CURRENT NUMBERS TO PURSUE BOTH A STEM DEGREE AND TEACHING CERTIFICATION THROUGH PURPOSEFUL PATHWAYS. THE PROJECT WILL FOLLOW A GROW YOUR OWN APPROACH BY RECRUITING PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS AND, LATER, PLACING THEM AS CERTIFIED TEACHERS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS IN THEIR HOME COMMUNITY. SECOND, PROJECT INITIATIVES WILL STRENGTHEN THE PATHWAYS AND PIPELINES TO STEM TEACHING THROUGH SPECIALIZED CURRICULA, CULTURALLY RELEVANT PEDAGOGICAL METHODOLOGIES THAT PROMOTE DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION, ENHANCED ADVISING, COLLABORATIVE FACULTY-STUDENT RESEARCH PROJECTS IN STEM, FIELD EXPERIENCES IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS, AND STEM OUTREACH PROGRAMS WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS. A THIRD GOAL IS TO ENACT COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS WITH ACADEMIC AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THAT PROVIDE RELEVANT PROFESSIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES LEADING TO BETTER-PREPARED STEM EDUCATORS. A FOURTH GOAL IS TO PROMOTE SUCCESS FOR STEM TEACHERS WORKING IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS THROUGH SUPPORTIVE MENTORSHIP AND INTENTIONAL INDUCTION OPPORTUNITIES TO STRENGTHEN STUDENTS? MASTERY OF STEM CONCEPTS AND SKILLS AND IMPROVE TEACHER RETENTION. QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE PROJECT EVALUATION WILL PROVIDE FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE FEEDBACK AND ASSESSMENT. PROJECT DATA COLLECTED REGARDING HOW DEMAND IS MET FOR HIGH-QUALITY STEM TEACHERS IN ST. LOUIS WILL BE COMPARED TO RESULTS IN THE LITERATURE TO ADD TO THE KNOWLEDGE BASE ON FILLING GAPS IN TEACHER SHORTAGES, ESPECIALLY IN URBAN AREAS. THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO ADD TO THE GROW YOUR OWN LITERATURE ON MEETING TEACHER CAPACITY NEEDS THROUGH THE THREE PS (PATHWAYS, PIPELINES, AND PARTNERSHIPS). THE PROJECT WILL DISTINGUISH ITSELF IN THAT THE THREE PS LEVERAGE NOT ONLY A HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICT, BUT ALSO LOCAL COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS ENGAGED IN STEM ACTIVITIES. THROUGH PUBLICATIONS AND PRESENTATIONS AT SEVERAL DIFFERENT VENUES, INVESTIGATORS WILL PROACTIVELY DISSEMINATE PROJECT FINDINGS AND OUTCOMES TO OTHER INSTITUTIONS REGIONALLY AND NATIONWIDE. THIS TRACK 1 SCHOLARSHIPS AND STIPENDS PROJECT IS SUPPORTED THROUGH THE ROBERT NOYCE TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (NOYCE). PARTICIPANTS WILL ENGAGE IN INTENSIVE SUMMER BOOTCAMPS FOLLOWED BY ACADEMIC YEAR MENTORING AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES USING THE HELLBENDER HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING CLUSTER. TRAINING INCLUDES LINUX, PYTHON, JUPYTER NOTEBOOKS, JOB SCHEDULING SYSTEMS, PARALLEL COMPUTING CONCEPTS, AND REPRODUCIBLE COMPUTATIONAL WORKFLOWS. STUDENTS WILL SELECT PROJECT PATHWAYS ALIGNED WITH THEIR INTERESTS, INCLUDING INDEPENDENT PROJECTS, FACULTY SUPERVISED RESEARCH, OR DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC SMALL PROJECTS IN AREAS SUCH AS COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY, BIOLOGY, ASTROPHYSICS, IMAGE ANALYSIS, AND DATA SCIENCE. PEER MENTORS WILL PROVIDE TECHNICAL GUIDANCE, TROUBLESHOOTING SUPPORT, AND ONGOING ENGAGEMENT THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT. THE PROJECT WILL CREATE AND ITERATIVELY REFINE OPEN ACCESS INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS, ASSESSMENT TOOLS, AND IMPLEMENTATION GUIDES THAT SUPPORT ADOPTION BY OTHER INSTITUTIONS. EVALUATION ACTIVITIES WILL EXAMINE STUDENT LEARNING, MENTORING OUTCOMES, WORKFORCE READINESS, AND BARRIERS TO PARTICIPATION, GENERATING EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES FOR BROADENING ACCESS TO CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE AND STRENGTHENING UNDERGRADUATE PATHWAYS INTO RESEARCH, GRADUATE STUDY, AND COMPUTATIONALLY INTENSIVE CAREERS. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.
